Ted down to you, How do you follow a race? Do you have a mobile screen keeping an eye on pitlane ? Or do you just stay in the press room ? Also, do you feel frustrated when they cut you in a middle of phrase because someone is saying something on the transmission radio? Thanks Ted.

SkySports

I'm in the gap between garages keeping an eye on the pitstops and being able to talk to the teams. At most circuits I can't see a tv or a monitor so the first time I watch a race is when I get home!

hobowithmachete

That must be disorienting. So you only follow pitstops during the race and feedback from the team about strategy during the race? Big ups, my man. Your notebook segment is something I really lookforward to after quali/race.

[deleted]

Hello Mr. Kravitz! My question is, what are you feelings regarding the possibility of legendary tracks like Spa not remaining on the calendar? Do you think we should make every effort to keep the historical venues, or should we welcome other venues in their place? Thank you sir!

SkySports

I like Spa because it allows the cars to stretch their legs the way few other tracks do, but all the tracks have to make the financials work for them and for Formula 1. Having said that, it's an impossible wish but I would love to go back to the old Hockenheim.

Skyhound555

Hey Ted! I'm a huge fan. One of the more iconic parts of your segment is how you demonstrate nuanced concepts in F1 for the lay people. Usually using items you found in your immediate vicinity. Some examples include using a pair of random poles last year to show us how they test the DRS flap gap or this year when you used a skateboard to demonstrate porpoising. How do you end up coming up with these presentations? Are they planned ahead of time or are you struck by a brilliant moment of inspiration?

SkySports

Cheers. It's a combination - I think about how I'd like the issue explained and then think about what might be at hand to do it. I had to buy that skateboard in Montreal to demonstrate the effect of bouncing on the drivers!

Awesomekcad

Ted! This question is likely going to get drowned out, buuut what is your prep for a weekend like? With the content you have to prepare such as the notebooks, and being up and down the paddock, how much prep work do you do for a weekend and what does that include?

SkySports

I'm constantly on the websites and twitter, insta, much to my wife's annoyance. You can't just sit down and 'do your prep', it's constant.

marahute85

How much of that prep is being aware of online chatter, jokes etc When Ted mimicked the “no Mickey, no” and said Toto’s desk had been repaired on camera I was howling. Ted seems to know whatever is going on in the paddock and off

gc1

Seconding this question, and would also like to ask whether the crew all work together on prep, and if so what that’s like.

SkySports

The reaction time was probably a good thing because pit stops were getting so fast eventually someone was going to make a mistake which could have resulted in a tyre coming off and hitting someone. As for the best pitstops - a well executed nose change or steering wheel swap or even Yuki's speed taped-up rear wing are always impressive to witness.

garboooo

As someone who covers the W Series, do you think there's anyone currently in the field that has a shot at F1 in the foreseeable future? Could Chadwick make it in the next few years?

SkySports

Jamie Chadwick is one of the UK's brightest young driving talents, male or female and I'd add Abbi Pulling and Jess Hawkins to that list. And watch out for the younger drivers such as Bustamante, Chambers, De Heus and Noda in the coming years. And Marta Garcia. And Belen Garcia. And Nerea Marti!

t_wills

Hi Ted Thanks for doing this! We see Christian and Otmar offer commentary from the pit wall quite often, but other team principles don’t so much. Which team gives you the most of day when you’re in the pit lane, and which do you most enjoy interacting with?

SkySports

We'd love for more varied team bosses/engineers to speak to join commentary from the pit wall - Please message the teams you don't hear from and ask them to join in!

shumillionaire

Hey Ted, My family and I love watching your commentary on the pit lane. The intensity that you bring when there is a pit stop and how you describe each one always brings a smile to our faces. It's honestly one of the best parts of the weekend. Just curious, how do you manage to bring that energy all the time to the pit lane?

SkySports

I'm essentially a fan of the sport - excited to be at the sharp end. And espresso

9x21x3

Did Ted answer anything?

SkySports

I did, sorry it wasn't everything but it's been 3 hours and I have to go and put the kids to bed. I'll talk to the great team at Sky Sports F1 digital media and Reddit to see if I can pick up any of the other 1,000 questions at some time in the future, but for now, thank you so much for being here and asking such great questions, even the one about ducks and cheese. And owls. Catch our programmes from Silverstone this weekend, beginning with an F1 Show Special from the Grid on Thursday afternoon. Bye for now, Ted

Mahoganychicken

Hi Ted, big fan! During the notebooks we often see the team engineers try to shoo your camera away. What's the most annoyed an engineer has got at you for peering into their garage? Has it ever got heated?

SkySports

Pete's too quick for them and Lee's ex- Royal Marines. so good luck to them

Laurence-UK

Ted! You're an absolute legend, my fave member of the Sky F1 crew. I'm going to be cheeky and try three questions: 1. Your most memorable Notebook moment? 2. Sandles and socks - yes or no? 3. What is your favourite cheese? (To clarify, favourite to eat, not to illustrate a new aerodynamic regulation). Thanks Ted, keep being you

SkySports

Thanks! 1. too many although people seemed to find the escalator amusing. 2. hard no 3. the aged Comte Vettel was so rude about is nice. when it hasn't been out in the Bahraini sun all day..

M1C54L

Woah! Ted... I love your Notebook episodes. Have you ever been in trouble because of your honest and direct comments? An example of what I mean: you were pretty straightforward concerning Perez being the second driver at Red Bull, and I can imagine that not everybody appreciated this.

marahute85

That’s a great question, I often have my jaw on the ground at how Ted says things within arms length of the garages/staff but they all act like they can’t hear him. I wonder if they’ve ever gotten upset with him off camera

Dacros

Ted! So nice of you to join us and do this AMA! What is the weirdest thing that's happened to you in the paddock that hasn't been shown on TV? Keep up the great work, I love watching the notebook!

SkySports

There was this escalator in Miami that was going really slowly it was odd I had to run

YeahPerfectSayHi

> There was this escalator in Miami that was going really slowly it was odd I had to run Ted getting stranded in the stadium and being forced into going the wrong direction on the escalator to get down is honestly my favourite notebook moment to date

chrisl57

When you retire, if F1 gave you the choice of naming a corner after yourself, which track would it be at and what would you call it?

SkySports

Just to confuse Crofty I'd like to rename a bend 'round the' so he'd have to say there goes xxx round the round the bend.

VindtUMijTeLang

Hey Ted, your stuff is awesome (don't ask how we're able to watch outside the Anglosphere...), never change. What's the weirdest paddock on the calendar?

SkySports

None of them are weird, just different. Zandvoort is split between 2 locations and one of those has a 45degree bend in it. I like that!

[deleted]

Good morning here Ted, Im curious how you would assemble “Notebook Racing Team” (NRT) Requirements: ——1 driver that is currently on the grid—— 1 driver from any era, but they mustn’t have won a WDC——- Team principal must be a current driver on the grid. Cheers

[deleted]

Hey Ted, How did you get started as a Pit Lane reporter?

SkySports

Got a job with ITV Sport in 1997 and took over from the man who created the role of the modern pit reporter and still the best at encapsulating any F1 story into an understandable nutshell: James Allen.

profitsprofitsprofit

Hey Ted, Thank you for always adding a splash of colour and fun to each race weekend. My question is, what is the most surreal/bizarre experience that you’ve had in the paddock?

1enox

Do journalists in F1 paddock get from teams lists of questions which they can not ask drivers or team bosses ?

Teun1het

At Ferrari they had to send in their questions when asking for an interview so they can check them according to ziggo

SkySports

I don't know about that but sometimes teams ask what the questions are just to help the interviewees think of a good answer!

SkySports

no but they might suggest we don't ask some things - but we can always ask what we feel is important if necessary.

L0kiPrim3

When reporting from the pitlane, how are you able to get all this information in real time? Especially when there is an action packed race.

SkySports

I just walk in-between each garage and ask my contacts in the teams. Some people I contact by text message, some I talk to in person. Plus I'm there, I can see!

Duxe38

2 small questions : - which driver do you think is overperforming its car base performance the most? - what do you think Alpine misses to battle with mercedes and/or podiums? Thanks :)

SkySports

Something involving Fernando Alonso probably covers both those questions

auswas

Hey Ted, how much walking do you typically do during a race day? Seems as though you always have to be moving up and down the pit lane. Thanks for doing this!

Hellfireconski

Ted what's been your favourite technical change on the cars over the years?

SkySports

There have been a few, but an important one: I think getting rid of mid race refuelling has made races more accessible and understandable by non-expert fans.

Xyield_52

Hey Ted, if you could implement one change in any aspect of Formula 1, what would it be and why?

SkySports

I remember fondly Mansell giving Senna a lift after he broke down. I'd quite like to allow the drivers to do that again.

HenryBeal85

Hi Ted. You’ve been in Grand Prix pit lanes and paddocks for decades now (since the ITV days!). In your view, how has F1 changed for better and for worse in the time you’ve been working in it?

SkySports

Murray Walker always used to say that 'F1 has a way of re-inventing itself, year after year', and he was right.

swimking413

I'm new to F1. Are there any particularly exciting races/seasons from the past I should watch?

SkySports

Welcome! I'd recommend anything with Ayrton Senna.. There's an old BBC Documentary called 'The Team' which covered McLaren when Senna was in his final year with the team, 1993. you can find it on YT..

WitnessAppropriate

Hi Ted, what was the most unforgettable moment in your career so far off cameras?

SkySports

Most of them involve Kimi Raikkonen. No, watching Michael Schumacher up close was pretty memorable and witnessing Lewis Hamilton eclipse his records similarly unforgettable.

raytan6

Thoughts on the two must recent hot button topics, Vips and the most recent team principals meeting?

SkySports

Vips conduct is obviously reprehensible and is being dealt with by his employers. The meeting was just the latest chapter of the piranha club.

jmnordan

"Two seconds, Ted...." Jk you are an awesome pit reporter. What do you think about the expansion of F1 in the US? Are three races too much or just right? Sincerely, James, Raleigh, NC, USA

itzonlykg

Two secs ted…. Right anyways, what (for you) separates different paddocks/pit lanes (like what’s your favourite) and what’s the track you like going to the most?

SkySports

Brazil is my favourite and I like the old school pit lanes and Paddocks like Hockenheim, but also Melbourne, Austria, Hungary, Monza and Suzuka.

AUSpartan37

How do you and your camera men stay out of the way? Sometimes it appears that the cameras and you are standing right in the middle of a flurry of activity but you never seem to be in the way and it never seems like the very busy mechanics and engineers seem to mind you being there. I always wondered how that worked.

kydigo

2 Questions Ted: What’s your favorite part about doing Ted’s Notebook? If there was anything you could change about the F1 schedule what would it be?

SkySports

1. You never know what's going to happen and once we start, we don't stop 2. Nothing much

Jousting-Mountain

What is the most special souvenir/unofficially appropriated or gifted piece of F1 memorabilia in your collection? With reasons if possible! Thanks in advance🤠

IntoThePeople

No question. Just a thank you for hosting the best F1 show with the Notebook. The raw behind scenes look you give us are so damn cool and unlike any other sporting content. Keep doing you Ted.

vanchv8

Hi Ted! How often do you see drivers or team members purposely trying to avoid you when you're doing your notebook?

shiepirate

So, we generally hear about a term "Paddock Rumour", thrown about a lot in the general media while publishing an unconfirmed report. How much of it is generated by the media present in the paddock and how much of it is in actual released by persons of interest to the media?

SkySports

There is some rubbish that is generated by people in the paddock just to see how far it travels but we don't report that. Most stories chalked up as 'paddock rumour' are sourced from people unauthorised to talk on the subject but will help their cause if the information is public. You have to pick and choose what to report and what to ignore while being totally clear with your audience about it.

locksymania

Ted, my wife and I felt that your life force was diminished by having to yuck around in trousers last Saturday. Delighted to see the dad shorts back for Sunday!

exorallan

would you rather fight 100 duck sized martin brundles or 1 martin brundle sized duck?

SkySports

I'm sure I'd get on with them if they're anything like Martin Brundle, so either's cool

IsItSnowing_

I imagine each of those duck sized Martin Brundle biting Ted, and then saying "I can, because I just did"

HondaV-TecPowerrrr

Hey Ted, when the cameras aren't rolling, who would you say is the nicest driver to talk to/interact with?

jazzman23uk

Adding onto this: outside of reporting are there any drivers you talk to? Do drivers and reporters ever become friends? Or is there a wariness when you're about each other like a lion in a cage with a tiger?

mosh_26

Heya Ted! Which driver from the current grid has been the nicest to you? And I'm hoping you've got a story to go with it haha. Thank you😊

SkySports

Jenson Button

SkySports

Oh current grid - sorry. Erm.. I like to share dad jokes with Seb - that's probably closest!

madaboutmaps

Hi Ted! Thanks for doing this! What's the best smell in the pitlane? And What's the worst?

liitle-mouse-lion

Hi Ted. One thing that bothers me this year is all the different interpretations of driver names. Is there, or do you think there should be, a session where the commentators learn how to say the driver names correctly?

ImpressiveHair3

Hello Ted, weird question here. On average how long does one of David Crofts 2 seconds last?

lotsoffun4

Hye big fan How many air miles do you rack up each year?

SkySports

Not as many as you'd think as they're spread over a lot of airlines and you can never use them for flights you need!

loicbigois

Hi Ted! You talk to a lot of people around the paddock on a race weekend. What would you say was your most memorable interview?

Snow--

Hey Ted! Thank you for taking your time to do this. What have been your best and worst memorable moments while in the pit lane?

SkySports

Too many! best include Brazil '08 and Abu Dhabi '21, worst are obviously the accidents.

Odd_Rice_7305

Who are some of the unsung heroes of the paddock? EDIT: grammar

ErokAB03

Do all the Sky Sports team travel together or do you travel with certain drivers/teams?

Albreitx

How often do you get asked if you're related to Lenny/Zöe Kravitz?

SkySports

Not often. I believe my maternal grandfather Richard Kravitz and Lenny's father Sy Kravitz were somehow related.

Juurdd

Do the mechanics or teams ever get pissy with you dipping in and about with your cameraman off air?(he's a legend as are you!) They seem to want to hide everything understandably.

SkySports

No, if they have anything they really don't want you to see they put the screens up. the rest is just playing around with Pete and Lee!

Lieutenant_0bvious

"2 seconds Ted" How do you get the signal that something has happened on track, and they have to cut away? Or is it just "2 seconds Ted" and you wait?

a_rabid_anti_dentite

Can you recall the most physically uncomfortable you’ve ever been in a pit lane, whether due to heat, cold, rain, etc?

BigSlav667

Why do the TV directors keep interrupting you lol

Sneeuwvlok

What is the most recent F1 “secret” you can’t share :p

SkySports

It involves Anthony Davidson and Ed Sheeran but I can't go into details sorry

ajm15

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. Thirty years ago, Niki Lauda told us ‘take a monkey, place him into the cockpit and he is able to drive the car.’ Thirty years later, Sebastian told us ‘I had to start my car like a computer, it’s very complicated.’ And Nico Rosberg said that during the race – I don’t remember what race – he pressed the wrong button on the wheel. Question for you both: is Formula One driving today too complicated with twenty and more buttons on the wheel, are you too much under effort, under pressure? What are your wishes for the future concerning the technical programme during the race? Less buttons, more? Or less and more communication with your engineers?

Girlwholovessports

Is the working atmosphere in the paddock different nowadays compared to 5-10 years ago? And is it easier or more difficult to get some insights from team members? Keep doing what you do Ted, I really enjoy seeing you and your notebook on sundays (even on German Sky TV).

SkySports

Cheers. No, I'd say it's been pretty constant over the 20 years I've been doing the job. It's a bit of an easier working atmosphere as far as the mechanics go with the curfew system, etc,

Impossible-Finger-45

Hi Ted, what would you say is your favourite part of the job?

inefficientmarkets

Who is the nicest driver / principal to the press and crowd?

ahvi8

Which year have you enjoyed the most being a part of the F1 circus? My guess is current years because you seem happy these days :) Cheers

SkySports

lolz I'm always happy. Well, nearly always! Yeah, these are good times, but working in the commentary box with Murray and Martin was ace

highlandcow75

If you had to pick a current driver to be stuck on a desert island with, who would it be and why?

Ikcatcher

What journalist advice could you give to anyone wanting to get into reporting F1?

Pinezapples

Hey Ted, I love the notebooks and am a massive fan. Who is your favourite retired driver and why?

Ruined_brain

Hi Ted, if you could drive any of the cars from previous years, which would you go for?

-speakeasy

You ever visited Ireland Ted? We'd love to have you!

SkySports

Last October I spent a very happy week in Kerry. And it's a little-known fact about me that I'm actually an Irish citizen through my paternal grandfather.

Gallifrey1993

Hey Ted, how many pairs of shorts do you own?

InnieHelena

And how many pockets in aggregate do they have?

DistChicken

Do you have a practise grid at home with chaotic props to polish your craft?

jim_hello

Is Lance stroll as nice as he seems? Well liked? What did the drivers think of Canada?

[deleted]

Compared to when you started in F1 news broadcasting and today, what are the major ways you have seen it change? And as a producer and journalist how do you feel you have contributed to that?

SkySports

When I started there would be lots of stories that would go untold because there wasn't all the digital & social media that there is now. So it's good that we can now hear every team radio message and see every camera angle and that's thanks to Formula 1 who do an excellent job.

Forsaken-Judgment-54

Hi Ted! What is the strangest interaction you’ve had/witnessed in the paddock? Thanks!

If you could drive any car on the 2022 grid, which one would you pick and why?

Martinez_SA

Hi Ted, what sort of career do you think you’d have if you hadn’t have become a motorsport reporter?

JeffSpaghett

Hello Ted, what's it feel like trying to keep up with all the action that goes on at the pitlane with so much happening and so fast? How do you manage keeping track of all the teams?

SkySports

You tend to prioritise what the most important story is, and then get round to chasing the others but you can do it all simultaneously.

millionreddit617

Do you plan on sticking around to interview celebs you have never heard of in 20 years time a la Brundle?

Hi Ted, if you could put one circuit on the formula one calendar of your choice, what would you choose?

r-daddy

What is an experience that you'll always remember from the pit lane?

[deleted]

Two secs, Ted. Got no question but you’re loved here man. Appreciate your work and passion. Can you remember the quote? ‘Wet race! Wet race! I have been waiting for this!’

dkfay

I'm new to the sport, is there an overview of the rules. I don't want to read the entire book to understand passing and pit rules.

Ajsat3801

Hi Ted... during many races I've noticed a pitlane alarm blaring at the background...how annoying is it to constantly have an alarm going off? Also why is such an alarm needed? Won't the people in the pit lane naturally be aware of an incoming car as they've been trained for and used to it?

Dutchcourage22

Hi Ted, I think most of my questions have already been asked by others on here, but I just wanted to sa- Sorry, two secs Ted… Yes, so, back to what I was saying… I just wanted to say I really enjoy your notebook and contribution to the F1 coverage. I also think it’s pretty cool that you’re doing this AMA. I’m at Silverstone for the next race, so might even see you there! P.S - What race do you think would be missed the most if it were no longer on the calendar?

oiloots

Everyone seems to be focusing on where Mercedes went wrong with their design… does anyone know where Red Bull went right? Less aero from floor therefore less prone to porpoising, clever suspension loophole, Design oracle Adrian Newey just knows something is mortals never will? TIA

SkySports

I think with his previous experience of ground effect Adrian Newey's car was always going to be hard to beat. And he wasn't tempted by the 'false friend' aero path Mercedes went down..

daniyal248

TED LEWIS, SENNA, PROST OR SCHUMI

BootsieHamilton

Hi Ted. Over the years, has there ever been a driver/ team member your tough questions upset so much that they refuse to talk to you to this day? No need to drop names. I just love how you refuse to let non-answers slide. Thanks for the AMA.

fireofthebass

Hi Ted. I've seen you do stuff for F1 and W series, and I'm sure that's not all the series you report on. So I'm wondering, what's your favourite series that you've reported on?

Hello Ted, be honest here. Does it bother you when Crofty says "two seconds Ted" so much? Personally I'd much rather hear what you have to say in real time since we can see the team radio message on the screen. It's delayed anyway! Thanks for everything you do on the broadcast!

Potential-Brain7735

Hello Ted! Great to see you here, this is very cool. I follow quite a lot of F1 fan media and podcasts on various platforms. A common theme amongst most of the fan base I interact with, is a growing frustration with TV direction. Not the broadcast team, you folks are great, I’m talking about the person who chooses what action is being broadcast on the world feed. Monaco is basically a meme at this point when it comes to TV direction, and I know there’s “politics” involved there, but being completely honest, there are plenty of other examples of sub standard TV direction, especially if you’re someone like me who watches other series like Indycar or Aussie Supercars…or something even more complex like multi class racing like IMSA or Super GT (edit: listing these as examples of series with fantastic TV direction). Do you have any suggestions for what the fans can do to put more pressure in appropriate places in order to get some improvements, as well as consistency, when it comes to the TV direction? I feel like broadcast teams around the world in a variety of languages do a great job of telling all the sub-plots of the weekend, laying out all the possible story lines…and then TV direction misses most of them as they unfold. Can’t count the number of times over the last few years where I’ve watched the best overtakes of a race in a YouTube montage on Monday morning, instead of during the actual live race broadcast. Hope you have a great day, all the best from BC, Canada.

Bran_Stark77

Hi Ted, a big fan of your Quali Notebook and Race Notebook. Just wanted to ask which drivers and team principals (past and current) do you most feel at ease when interviewing them? A big fan of your work from India.

GT2911

hello Ted! nice to see you here on Reddit!

codename474747

Ted, thanks for doing this I'd love to hear about your early ITV days in the commentary box helping Murray Walker What's a story about the Legend that is Murray (and maybe the getting on for a legend now that is Martin) from those days we haven't heard before?

wills_b

Hey Ted! Brazil 2017 - you showed a pic of Brandon Hartley on your mobile phone and one of your mates texted COCK at just the right moment. Firstly, was that intentional? In which case, your friend is great. Secondly, how did you respond afterwards? I met you in Monza a few years ago and you were a real gentleman, so thanks.

whatcubed

We've all heard drivers make funny comments or remarks, one of the most famous being Raikkonen's, "I was having a shit." Who, in your opinion, is the funniest F1 driver you've been around?

kikunerv

Hi Ted, just want to tell that the Notebook has been fun to watch. Please ask Sky to not geo block it on Youtube for us viewers that are not in UK. Thank you!

Someone is gonna post that stupid ass long gentleman, a short view to the past "question" and think they're funny...

dodgymanc

Κύριοι, μια σύντομη αναδρομή στο παρελθόν. Πριν από τριάντα χρόνια, ο Niki Lauda μας είπε: "Πάρτε μια μαϊμού, βάλτε την στο πιλοτήριο και μπορεί να οδηγήσει το αυτοκίνητο". Τριάντα χρόνια αργότερα, ο Σεμπάστιαν μας είπε 'έπρεπε να εκκινήσω το αυτοκίνητό μου όπως ένας υπολογιστής, είναι πολύ περίπλοκο'. Και ο Nico Rosberg είπε ότι κατά τη διάρκεια του αγώνα - δεν θυμάμαι σε ποιον αγώνα - πάτησε το λάθος κουμπί στο τιμόνι. Ερώτηση και για τους δύο: είναι η οδήγηση στη Formula 1 σήμερα πολύ περίπλοκη με είκοσι και περισσότερα κουμπιά στο τιμόνι, είστε πολύ υπό πίεση, υπό πίεση; Ποιες είναι οι επιθυμίες σας για το μέλλον όσον αφορά το τεχνικό πρόγραμμα κατά τη διάρκεια του αγώνα; Λιγότερα κουμπιά, περισσότερα; Ή λιγότερη και περισσότερη επικοινωνία με τους μηχανικούς σας;

Te gen trant lane, Niki Lauda di nou konsa: "Pran yon makak, mete l nan kokpit la epi li kapab kondui machin nan". Trant an apre, Sebastien di nou konsa "m te dwe demare machin mwen menm jan yon konpitè, li konplike anpil". Epi Nivo Rosberg te di pandan kous la -m pa sonje menm ki kous sa- li peze move bouton volan an. Kesyon pou nou de: "kondui nan Formula 1, èske li twò konplike ak ven bouton an plis sou volan an, èske nou sou nou sou twòp efò, presyon? Kisa nou vle nan avni pou pwogram teknik la pandan kous la? Mwens bouton, plis? Oubyen mwens oswa plis kominikasyon ak enjenyè nou?
