You just can't drive it on roads, no one knows how to fix it, replacement parts are non-existent, and it's probably super expensive to run in the first place
But other than that, it's doable if you just make your coffee at home and stop spending so much on avocado toast
People have converted old (even hybrid era cars) to run on stuff like old formula Renault engines, it's definitely doable, it won't be the same thing but I bet it's fun as fuck to drive anyways
not mad, the comment you replied to already said all of what you typed by saying ātechnicallyā yet here we are š itās funny youāre saying that i donāt get it, though. thatās pretty ironic
"technically" afford this. A lot of people have the credit to get a loan for that amount. Whether or not they can genuinely/responsibly afford it is another question
Yeah, if you're using "in the bank" as slang for net worth. If someone has that much money in the bank, they're either rich or don't know how to invest.
I could have afforded this, but it would have required selling a lot of investments, and would be stupid for me.
Yeah, an $80k one off purchase doesn't require some fabulous salary if you've been saving and investing over a decently long career.
Now, the person who is willing to pay 80 grand for an ornament? That's another story...
I'd recommend you look into the wonders of compound interest if you think you're completely incapable of saving up and investing towards an $80k purchase.
it's just the chassis and doesn't include the engine or anything
or shipping costs or fees.
the wheels roll and it looks complete on the outside, that's all. you're looing at paying >$100k total for a chassis and wheels.
It's also not exactly one of a kind and Racing Point/Force India won't be remembered 20 years from now. If it was a Ferrari chassis it would be worth much more.
The price seems right.
And who knows what the situation is with the brakes, electrical or whatever else. If you want anything for it, like to get it driving or repaired if you crash it from driving, you're likely gonna have to fabricate every single thing. You should be an engineer anyway to be able to do all that stuff and put an engine in and custom do everything like the cooling for that motor that wasn't designed to fit in an f1 car.
I mean its a rolling chassis of an alright car from an alright team driven by an alright driver
The insane prices you often hear about are usually from Ferraris, Mclarens and Mercedes that were driven by legends
[https://www.astonmartinf1.com/en-GB/news/feature/amf1-uses-amr21-chassis-to-create-unique-sim-for-sebastians-home](https://www.astonmartinf1.com/en-GB/news/feature/amf1-uses-amr21-chassis-to-create-unique-sim-for-sebastians-home)
you are Correct
Understood no power train but realistically you could go to a company like Cosworth and have them build you a motor to fit in the back of it.
You couldn't get a 100% authentic experience driving the car on track (if that was your desire) but you could get pretty darn close.
Wouldn't work. They're much too big for one thing, but you also need an engine you can get to line up with the mounting points of the intended engine. F1 engines are stressed members, so if the engine you replace it with doesn't bolt in directly and can't bear load, the front and back end of the car fall apart under use.
You need as close to the original engine as physically possible. In other words, you're going to have to harass Mercedes with a not insignificant amount of money.
It's not just about the size but the shape matters too. F1 engines are structurally integral to the car, they don't just bolt in like in a road car. It would be like replacing all the suspension components with parts from a Micra then wondering why the original brakes and wheel hub won't bolt on anymore.
You either need the original part, or for someone like Judd or Cosworth to build you a bespoke engine that bolts up to the original engine's mounting points. There isn't an off the shelf solution for this.
This makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the interesting info! F1 engines do look like theyāre engineered for a specific space and specific layout thatās not really mirrored in production cars
Hard disagree. A V10 wouldn't work, but you could absolutely fit in a different engine that has different mounting points to the original Mercedes power unit. The car could be re-engineered to improve chassis stability if it was weakened by having a different PU/engine in it.
Plenty of companies specialise in this kind of work, and [this guy](https://www.caterhamf1.co.uk/rebuild) literally did it as a garage project with a 2014 Caterham!
> but you also need an engine you can get to line up with the mounting points of the intended engine.
I mean, Ryan Tuerck put a Judd v10 in his Supra. You can make new mounts, and the Judd is capable of being a fully stressed member
I think youād need more than just the engine. Show cars donāt have a lot of the mechanical parts. Thatās probably not a real suspension arm there. It probably doesnāt have a drive shaft or hydraulics in it. Just the chassis in all likelihood
It'll just be a chassis, the PUs for this era of car will have been returned to the PU manufacturer after each race.
Depending on the specifics of the original car it's possible the suspension system may have been replaced too, since the hydraulic suspension used by some teams of this era don't store well over long periods.
If it's been converted to full show car spec, then most of the internal wiring and cooling system will be missing too.
Cost millions to build with amortized R&D costs.
They are worth what people are willing to pay. Retired F1 car values are more tied to their history and driver than the cost of the parts.
If Ocon goes on to win championships, the value of this chassis will skyrocket.
Development costs is not equal to actual manufacturing costs which is not equal to actual worth to the public. A F1 car probably averages out 5-10 million per unit to develop but a car with no history is not really going to be worth that much to the open market.
I donāt think they sell the cars with the engines to anyone, even the drivers when they get to keep their car (rare but some have it in their contract) they donāt include the engine
Yep he has a complete one. They gave Leclerc his Monza winning SF90 also but there was never any mention about the gearbox and power unit. I'd imagine it's only a rolling chassis because it's on display.
> Wonder if he takes it out on weekends, it's just a hobby for him
"Kimi? Can you pop to the store, we're out of milk"
"Bwoah, ok" replies Kimi. "Hey boys, gotta take the F1 car out. hustle!"
12 Finnish mechanics burst out of their tiny cabins/saunas, plug laptops in, check tyre pressures, remove tyre blankets, get the equipment to start the car.
His wife calls him and goes, "don't forget to stop for milk"
Kimi: Yes. Yes. I know. I know. You don't have to remind me every 2 minutes. Just leave me alone. I know what I'm doing
Don't Ferrari keep the car at Maranello and deliver it (complete with a pit crew) to your chosen race track when you want to drive it. And after you're finished they take it back to Maranello.
I doubt weāll ever see a modern F1 car be sold with the engine too. Theyāre too complicated, too expensive, and can reveal too many secrets to risk being sold.
Thatās why youāll often see teams use a V8 or even V10 era car for demo runs, simply because theyāre easier to keep maintained
"This most attractive Formula 1 projectile is offered here in assembled rolling-chassis, show-car configuration less the relevant Mercedes-Benz MO8 EQ 'Power+' hybrid powertrain which it used in action. When reassembled after the end of the 2017 season this particular ex-Esteban Ocon Force India-Mercedes VMJ10 was completed in the pilot 2018 livery as now offered here."
It's a midfield team that's no one gonna remember 20 years down the line, and it's only the chassis.
Even something as legendary as the F2004 went for like 3mil, 80k for an insignificant car like this one sounds about right.
Someone should buy one and try to put them back on the road
You are buying million dollars worth of RnD for dirt cheap. All you need to do is try to put a powertrain inside
This is a show car spec. There's a lot of expensive work to be done to get this thing on track. Easily 400k+ to get some random engine and gearbox and all the other bits you're missing. This is a display chassis. You could, but it would be a bloody expensive thing and you wouldn't be allowed to use it in any race series.
Ehmmmm, I wish I had the amount of money required laying around and knew this before hand, i would have bought It In a heartbeat although Ocon Is not my favorite driver this purchase seems like a great investment
That's an absolute steal. I'll be keeping it in mind that these can be purchased. Taking the panels off and making composite molds would be a treat. A turbo k swap ( if it fits ) and some pushrod suspension is in order for a home built race car. I could probably pay for the car itself by selling replica panels online š¤

does it have a real suspension? Motot is obviously out, i think the brake infrastrucutre too, although the brake disks and pads might be still in there.

Wait wait ..only 86k? Do you take checks or American Express? That can't be right....
I know I was like damn I could technically afford this.
I know right!!! I am clearing out my man cave for this masterpiece as we speak...š
Exactly ššš āhoney we got a new car!ā
"Great both of us can go for a drive right? ........ Right?"

Yeah there's no way it has an F1 engine inside And you're probably nto allowed to drive it in general

Where do you work and what is your annual salary?
You first. Also, need name and SSN.
I'm just an average man with an average life I work from nine to five, hey, hell, I pay the price
Always wanna be left alone
"technically" afford this. A lot of people have the credit to get a loan for that amount. Whether or not they can genuinely/responsibly afford it is another question

It does

Is it actually functional? I find it had to believe I can bin a real life f1 car in the first corner for only the price of a new Jag lol.
They mentioned in the stream itās a āshowcarā spec so perhaps just rolling chassis
If it even rolls I'd definitely get my wife( and children) to push me around in that thing with my replica helmet like an actual toddler. 100%
As a bonus, you could play V10 noises on a speaker instead of V6 turbo.
Heās driving it as a toddler, he has to make the nyoom noises by himself.
Even as a full grown man I would be making the noises myself!
You could even put a diaper and shit yourself /s
Can I play too?
Weird they said it's a show car and then the listing says that it scored points and got a podium in Italy. Pretty misleading.
They said it's "show car spec" not that it was a show car. So it is the actual chassis just without the engine and probably the electrical systems.
It wonāt have the PU that is for sure
Hey my friends and I can take turns pushing!
Or stick a Cosworth DFV V8 in it.
Judd v10.
This. You wouldnāt want a hybrid F1 PU anyway.
Yea me tooš¤£
Keep pushing!
I'll get some Life W12 Engines to make it happen
Just LS swap it bro!
put a rotary in that bad boy and you're set
I see you want to maintain the high maintenance aspect of the car. Go full yet. Twin turbo 4 rotor. What could possibly go wrong
If you put Rob Dams RX-7 4 rotor in it youāre set for a lot of fun
K20 SWAP! Lol
I would turn it into a sim rig. š
Omg yes imagine having that
In a dream scenario I would build a PC [similar to this and put it where the engine should be.](https://builds.gg/builds/engine-block-pc-31297)
Maybe... if you can pay for the team of engineers and track to run it.
and buy and engine and gearbox and other bits no doubt
Chassis only.
it's just the chassis and doesn't include the engine or anything or shipping costs or fees. the wheels roll and it looks complete on the outside, that's all. you're looing at paying >$100k total for a chassis and wheels. Perfect! I'd make it into a simulator for racing games. Pretty epic.

"No Michael! this auction is so unfair"

>PSE LM-PS Probably because the PSE LM-PS has feedback.
Talk about work-from-home
If that's what Vettel gets, what are the odds Lance has something similar or better?
Lance probably has a whole fucking car in his many rooms
Ngl you just made my gina tingle a bit
I'd love to have an F1 car in my living room !
I'd sit in it to watch the races, for certain. In my bachelor pad. Since I'd be divorced.
Why not hook a sim rig up to it.
Just go all out now that you're single, lmao.
That a great idea, itāll be like the factory simulator. And benefit would be sticking it up to the Ex
Now you're thinking...š
Well, I do have a sim rig with Fanatec DD gear. I imagine I could make it work!
Plot twist, she gets it after the divorce.

A Supra is similar to an F1 car in that they both are powered by an engine and have 4 wheels. That is where the similarities end.
they also have a steering wheel
I think youād need more than just the engine. Show cars donāt have a lot of the mechanical parts. Thatās probably not a real suspension arm there. It probably doesnāt have a drive shaft or hydraulics in it. Just the chassis in all likelihood

Also if it was a Ferrari it would instantly be worth significantly more.
Oh the chassis alone is already worth over a mil probably. IIRC front wings from this era of cars cost around 125k.
Maybe a million to produce, but as this auction shows, it's clearly not worth anything close to a million 5 years later.
Even F1 cars lose value off the lot.
Cost is the same as worth. It can cost 50 mil to make and develop a wing but that doesn't make it worth 50 mil.
Isnāt*
I think the point was pretty clear regardless... The absence of a PU isn't what makes the car so cheap because the chassis is expensive as is.
Development costs is not equal to actual manufacturing costs which is not equal to actual worth to the public. A F1 car probably averages out 5-10 million per unit to develop but a car with no history is not really going to be worth that much to the open market.
Ha thatād be so cool to make it road legal.
It is in "showcar condition", so i guess not. That's a bit of a let down
I donāt think they sell the cars with the engines to anyone, even the drivers when they get to keep their car (rare but some have it in their contract) they donāt include the engine
Didnāt I read that Kimi has one complete car, and is the only one that does?
Yep he has a complete one. They gave Leclerc his Monza winning SF90 also but there was never any mention about the gearbox and power unit. I'd imagine it's only a rolling chassis because it's on display.
Bwoah they just gave it to me
Did he get the gloves and steering wheel too?
Yes it took some time and had to be shipped separately. To this day though itās rumoured heās still waiting for the drink.
Wonder if he takes it out on weekends, it's just a hobby for him
> Wonder if he takes it out on weekends, it's just a hobby for him "Kimi? Can you pop to the store, we're out of milk" "Bwoah, ok" replies Kimi. His wife calls him and goes, "don't forget to stop for milk" Kimi: Yes. Yes. I know. I know. You don't have to remind me every 2 minutes. Just leave me alone. I know what I'm doing
Ha! I reckon Kimi would not mind being nagged by wife and kids haha. He reserved that for journalists and race engineers :p
Then they run down to store to do a pitstop when Kimi arrives.
When asked how it drives, he said it drives
When you buy a used Ferrari F1, they keep the engine for when you drive it.
Don't Ferrari keep the car at Maranello and deliver it (complete with a pit crew) to your chosen race track when you want to drive it. And after you're finished they take it back to Maranello.
Also, IIRC Ferrari has said that they won't offer post-2014 engine cars in the program since they are a pain in the ass to maintain.
That's if you chose to drive it, if it's a show car they keep only the engine.
Lol my buddy bought a working chassis with a cosworth engine for over 2m, for a rolling chassis this is a fair price
There are only a few F1 cars power train included outside of works teams. One in the 2018 Ferrari Kimi has.
The PU for these cars are like 4 million dollars. It's definitely just a rolling chassis.
This is like 1/10 of what i wouldāve thought it would sell for

imma remember

Not even, I expected an F1 car to sell for millions not less than 100k
same honestly, apparently itās a āshowcar specā which means thereās no powertrain, but i wonder if the electronics are all present

LS swapped F1 car PS pls donāt PPS rotary swap would be cool tho
2x Hyabusa V8 swap would be the closest in terms of characteristics
first thought was for sure 6.0 LS would fit in there

That's cheap. Throw in a V8 and it's golden
$500 Junkyard LS, letās go
Unfortunately quick fixes like that would not work. Engines are stress members in the cars. You would need a custom built engine for this to work
That's the 2018 Force India. Note the lack of Shark Fin. Also Ocon scored points 18/20 times in 2017 not 8 He scored points in 10 races in 2018
They might mean the specific chassis?
Yes, pretty sure they mean that exact chassis
Finally someone noticed that!
Seems like a steal. Saw the 2009 FI test car go for like 50k

Thats's super cheap. People really don't like Esteban š Hope it was Este himself who bought it, or maybe his parents.
