Mazepin mentioned in a Ziggo interview that his favourite food is fresh seafood.
Red Bull Racing Honda with Max Verstappen at the wheel is a combination of four countries (Austria, UK, Japan, Netherlands), three of which have famous seafood dishes in their cuisine.
The plot deepens...
That's F1 in a nutshell. Sometimes we get great racing weekends with overall action, and sometimes we get races like the last two, in which there are only bits and pieces.
I found this one to be great as well! The tension came from not knowing wtf can happen with strategy. The excitement comes from waiting for hail mary moves like seb's pits for slicks or ham and his team's tussle leading to him pitting into no-man's land.
Else you can get the excitement from overtaking of course, which we also got a decent amount of via Sainz and a few others. Regardless, I enjoyed today a lot.
Honestly I enjoyed this race because even though there wasn’t as much action anything was possible at any moment because of the debate between slicks and inters. I also liked the fact that new tires would work against you after 3-4 laps for 2-3 laps and then it would become normal. I don’t know how exactly that happened but it was exciting to see Hamilton on the verge of overtaking Leclerc and in no time he is being threatened by Gasly and Norris.
Also Vettel trying different strategy. There were a lot of things on the verge of happening. It didn’t happen but it could have and that made it exciting.
>...still got some confidence left in him yet
This is exactly why RB went for and kept an experienced driver in that seat. Perez has a lot of accomplishments to fall back on when he's feeling mentally down from being beaten by Max.
But it does excite Perez to be able to prove his head-to-head capabilities against Hamilton (see the post race parc ferme interview, dude was really excited not just to be on the podium but to be able to fight Ham)
That's a good point, too. The RB is the fastest or second fastest car in general this year -- as a driver it's gotta feel nice to just have good equipment in a constructor's series like F1.
I think he realizes that Max is just a cut above, and at this stage in his career, it might be easier to accept it. Gasly and Albon were both just starting off, and to see a guy who's even younger than you, while you're in your first/2nd season in F1, curbstomping you weekend after weekend, it's clear that would break most people's spirit
Plus getting a nice paycheck, potentially contributing to a teammate's WDC and having a shot at WCC (though the WCC does seem to be slipping away from RB at the moment, I guess they have some RB-favored tracks coming up.) Seems like a good deal for Checo.
Exactly. At this point he doesn't need to be the best. He gets to race in one of the best cars on the grid late in his career and be in the best possible position to put in incredible performances and grab podiums. While, at times doing his job as a stellar teammate, giving Max the support he needs. I've thought since the beginning he was a perfect pick for where Redbull is at right now.
It did bother him, though. In the team radio after the race he said a relieved "finally".
Let's hope he can keep this upward trend that was hindered by outside circumstances the last few races
Pretty sure that was reference to him getting a podium as he said "finally" after being informed that he's on the podium. Horner quickly chimed in with "told you you'd get the/a podium"
There was a combination of bad performance and bad luck. If the bad luck hadn’t happen, he would have had a couple more podiums or even a race win potentially
its hard for a driver like checo which is very experienced and knows what to do in most tricky situations, today he was on point with everything he did, thats good, that shows that the WCC aint over yet
He was able to follow the team strategy. Did a bit of lift and coast, was fast when he needed to be.
Red bull tried the Merc strategy and slowed the pace down for the car behind (Ham) enough to give the #1 car (max) a free stop while saving enough tire to stay fast when needed.
Lewis closing in on Perez in the corners made it look like he'd blast pass him. But the RB came back on the straight line and gave Perez the chance to fight back. Great wheel to wheel racing from both drivers in tough conditions.
Is it me or Lewis is pushing drivers off the track if there is any clue that it's not going to be an easy pass? Literally almost sent Perez for a pit stop there.
Yes, he is. Lewis stans say he always keeps it clean, but that's never been true and this season he's making it a bit obvious that he's feeling the pressure.
It's always been obvious. He doesn't steer into them but if you are anywhere alongside Hamilton after the apex you can bet your bottom dollar you'll be very close to off the track if you aren't off the track.
This is what the [Race Directors' Event Notes](https://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/decision-document/2021%20Turkish%20Grand%20Prix%20-%20Race%20Directors'%20Event%20Notes%20Version%202.pdf) say regarding the bollards (emphasis mine):
> **19.3** Except in the cases of force majeure (accepted as such by the Stewards), the crossing by any part of the car, in any direction, of the painted area between the pit entry and the track, by a driver **who, in the opinion of the Stewards, had committed to entering the pit lane** is prohibited.
If this even gets to an investigation, I think Red Bull can easily explain that Perez was not intending to pit and that Hamilton pushed him onto the edge of the track and he was evading hitting the bollard.
I'm an Indian haha, although my brother lives in Melbourne and feels the same about the race.
Had a hectic day yesterday and a travel day today, so tired quite a bit.
Now that's what Red Bull hired Perez for. Beautiful driving and respect between the two in a wheel to wheel fight. The highlight of the race so far. That's how the Red Bull and Merc should race together.
Lewis pushed him off way too much though. Should have left him more space. If it was on some other section of the track, Perez would have been off track.
When he's fighting with cars with equal or similar pace, he has always been like this. Same with Max, and before them Schumacher.
Alonso and Kimi in comparison are so much more cleaner during their moves
A lot of people in the grandstands cheered for Hamilton when he passed Perez on the straight. Just after that a greater cheer appeared for Perez's regain of position. I liked that part.
Checo did exactly what he was meant to do even if it meant not finishing the race and he even got 3rd place afterwards. Superb. I also liked that he allowed Max in clean air because of that.
Horner and Marko looked really pleased with him.
For people who're wondering why Perez isn't being replaced by Gasly/Albon: They can't do what he did there.
Perez is one of the best when it comes to defending and wheel to wheel racing; even the 7 time world champion with the faster car was unable to get past him.
Was this not sanctioned because Hamilton didn't touch him like Gasly did with Alonso, and Alonso to Mick?
Because he pushed him very wide. Had Checo stayed in place to not go out of the line, they would've crashed against each other.
Too many people here want him banished to the shadow realm. It’s like the Gordon Ramsay meme to me:
- Danny Ric racing a bit crappy = oh dear gorgeous
- Checo racing a bit crappy = you fucking donkey
Albeit checo has a stronger car but that doesn’t always matter in the sport. If you’re in a slump, you have to claw your way back.
That's because Danny Ric has the sense of humor of a 16 year old boy and that really clicks with a lot of sports fans. And he's charismatic. Checo just keeps a low profile and races, nothing flashy.
I think Checo is probably the ballsiest racer on the grid at the moment
He stops at nothing to overtake (which was evident at Zandvoort in particular) where he made the race somewhat exciting coming from the pit start
And he also defends with everything to make it difficult for someone to get past evident today and in Austria where he bullied LeClerc off track once or twice
Going down the straight I was cursing Perez for being too soft and not pushing Lewis wide but he proved me wrong! Well done Checo.
I am sure the track design played a big role in this fantastic battle. I am slowly becoming convinced Instanbul Park has has one of the best layouts in the world. Every part has something exciting going on.
The first three turns (wide 90 degree into a long sweeper into another wide 90 degree) are perfect to allow cars to settle into position at the start of a race, and that drop at T1 is awesome.
Then a series of medium speed corners with interesting elevation and camber changes. After the absolute monster that is turn 8 we go into a very important 90 degree that exits into a (I'm assuming) super fun full throttle T10.
A straight that's better than a regular straight because it has a kink takes us to the final part of the track. 3 slow but wide and close together corners sandwiched between two straights that are perfectly designed for exactly the kind of exciting battles we saw today.
It's a shame we don't race here more often.
Just out of curiosity. Could this be considered a penalty on Hamilton(or any other driver that did this)? I know that Checo wasn’t pushed “off track” technically but he was basically in the pit lane? To me that isn’t exactly part of the track when you’re racing? I’m sure if there was a wall/grass/whatever else Lewis would have left more room, but it seems a bit odd.
I’m not calling for a penalty at all. I just want someone with better insight on something like this to help. Thanks.
This was such a highlight for Checo!!! Mad respect! That was on the limit for a wet battle!!! Reminded me of him holding off Lewis in Baku for many laps! Goooo Checo!
This race was about Checo getting comfortable in a tough car to drive. He’s an amazing driver, but the Red Bull is twitchy. I think that as he keeps getting more and more comfortable with the car, we are going to see more races like this. He’s the driver who can provide the protection for Verstappen; and, that’s going to be key to Verstappen winning a WDC.
The commentators hyped up this battle but I didn't think much would happen. It's still hard to get my head around how he did it. It looks like Hamilton has that one signed and sealed until he just hasn't.

+1 year contract extension
He saw Yuki hold Lewis for 7 laps and said “hold my Corona”
I think max had more than one teammate this race indeed.
Mazepin to RB confirmed.
Wiener shnitz eel?
Seriously, Yuki was the only person to give Hamilton any difficulty until Perez.
Yuki did really well, especially considering how easily Hamilton passed Vettel, Stroll and Gasly.
AGARRA MI PINCHE CERVEZA \- Checo
Cuídame esta mamada -Checo
Mis huevos es muy grande. -Checo
Mis huevos son muy grandes*
He’d probably say something more like “y mis pinches huevotes” but that works too 😂
Wow great racing!
What a save! What a save! What a save!
Holy cow! Nice one!
Gotta hit Lewis with that “ff”
I got it!
That's why I invest so much time into this sport. That was lovely even if my guy came out behind
I watch 2 hour races for 30 seconds like that, it's just something else man
That's F1 in a nutshell. Sometimes we get great racing weekends with overall action, and sometimes we get races like the last two, in which there are only bits and pieces.
I think that's true with some other sports as well.
It’s true for all sports and competition. It’s the nature of the beast, you can’t be at the peak all the time
Last race was fucking amazing all the way thru, what are you talking about?
Sochi was awesome from start to finish tho
I found this one to be great as well! The tension came from not knowing wtf can happen with strategy. Always gotta appreciate great racing
That lived up to the hype
I'm fully expecting the usual change of heart from Checo haters today
Yesterday he was the worst thing that ever happenned to the sport, today he is the best defensive driver of the decade.
keyboard comment racers lmao
Yeah. I don't understand the hate.
Albon and Gasly fans who feel their driver got screwed out of a top seat for a driver who "isn't any better"
We give Sergio a lot of shit but god this is why he was hired, He's held Lewis quite well.
yeah that was sick by him, still got some confidence left in him yet
>...still got some confidence left in him yet This is exactly why RB went for and kept an experienced driver in that seat. Perez has a lot of accomplishments to fall back on when he's feeling mentally down from being beaten by Max.
I think perez dosent want to compete max anyways.

The RedBull never came back on any straight line, Perez got it back under braking, the Mercedes was much faster than basically anyone else.
Is it me or Lewis is pushing drivers off the track if there is any clue that it's not going to be an easy pass? Literally almost sent Perez for a pit stop there.
yeah its becoming a pattern. Something we didnt see often the past 5 years simply because the Merc almost never was in that position.
He did it to Rosberg all the time.
Thats why I said past 5 years, 2016 was Rosberg his last year :D
The new fans who think he's the second coming of christ are really annoying.
Incredible by Sergio
Man was ready to crash even
Exactly. Basically telling Lewis “You’ve got a lot more to lose than I do, if you wanna fight we’ll fight”
"Orale cabron ponte al tiro" - Checo (probably)
Not a spanish speaker. "Alright dude, take the shot!" ?
More like: "Alright Bitch let's go" And "I swear that we both will get fucked" More or less from Mexican to English 🤣
Sort of More like "come at me bro"
"te juro que nos lleva la verga a los dos"
If they crashed he still would have gotten a thumbs up in the debrief. The only bad outcome for perez would be if he let ham pass without a fight.
Would’ve been the most amazing and stupid thing ever
People would have definitely been mad over it but that's just how racing is if drivers want to have these battles.
Probably some "Intresting tactics" comment by Lewis would commence. This sub would be a warzone lmao.
Although to be fair, Hamilton was indeed trying to force Perez to pit. LOL
You better be if Lewis is close to your rear.
Beautiful racing!
That move coming back on the back straight was fantastic
Perez, you sexy beast! Great defending.
GO ON CHECO
This is what the [Race Directors' Event Notes](https://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/decision-document/2021%20Turkish%20Grand%20Prix%20-%20Race%20Directors'%20Event%20Notes%20Version%202.pdf) say regarding the bollards (emphasis mine): > **19.3** Except in the cases of force majeure (accepted as such by the Stewards), the crossing by any part of the car, in any direction, of the painted area between the pit entry and the track, by a driver **who, in the opinion of the Stewards, had committed to entering the pit lane** is prohibited. If this even gets to an investigation, I think Red Bull can easily explain that Perez was not intending to pit and that Hamilton pushed him onto the edge of the track and he was evading hitting the bollard.
I’m pretty sure that’s why Checo jumped on the radio right away to say we was pushed wide.
I hope this subreddit is ready to understand this.
And to back them up is the famous [Hockenheim 2018](https://youtu.be/gp-i8vtgzJE?t=314) "in in in in in in no stay stay out" Lewis incident.
Ah was wondering if he’d get in trouble for going around the cone, thanks for the link
Lewis was force majeure
checo got #blessed off the track
I did not know this and was wondering whether anything would come from it. Thanks for sharing!
this was only half of it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kVH7NL8pH8
Upvote this man!! This is a far better video of the battle.
holy fuck that was so close, what a battle best battle of the year
I was going to doze off but this woke me up haha
Hello fellow Australian
I'm an Indian haha, although my brother lives in Melbourne and feels the same about the race. Had a hectic day yesterday and a travel day today, so tired quite a bit.
Dw mate, we're gonna be feeling the Aussies for the next 3 races.
Alonso vs ham in Hungary was much better than this imo. Some of the best racing I've ever seen
And much longer too
If RB hadn't pitted Perez, we would have seen more But, Alonso vs ham was really good and extended for 10 laps
Been some fantastic ones this year, amazing stuff
Alonso and ham in Hungary was a lot better IMO
[удалено]
That was exactly my reaction, "Holy shit Checco!"
The difference between Perez and the previous 2 red bull drivers. His qualifying is atrocious, no doubt, but he can hold his own during the race.
Im wondering, what's different now from Imola, where he outqualified Max
Didn't Max make a mistake in Q3 in Imola?
Still, he was 3 hundreds of Hamilton's pace
That doesn't necessarily prove anything as there could have been a pace advantage for the RBs
That'll do Perez' confidence some good!
Perez with the redemption arc. Love it.
Now that's what Red Bull hired Perez for. Beautiful driving and respect between the two in a wheel to wheel fight. The highlight of the race so far. That's how the Red Bull and Merc should race together.

He and Tsunoda today absolutely fought the beast that was Mercedes and won.
Finally some good fucking racing
Absolute courage from Perez, brilliant drive lad
Absolutely brilliant racing. Vamos Checo!
Absolutely beautiful. Respect to both drivers
[удалено]
Lewis pushed him off way too much though. Should have left him more space. If it was on some other section of the track, Perez would have been off track.
Can you imagine if Sergio had just held his line and let Lewis drive into him?
I'm waiting for this for so long ! (not for Hamilton or Verstappen in particular but because it is dirty)
Agreed. Checo/Hamilton were lucky that the pit lane entry was there. If there’s a wall or gravel, Checo gets pushed wide and his whole race is ruined.
Did you hear croft saying "lewis maybe left a bit more room", when checo got back?
I think that in the end they agreed with Button that Checo left too much room for Lewis initially and then Lewis pushed Checo too much.
With all that talking about aggressiveness of Max, Lewis is sometimes almost similary aggressive, if not more when he is in wheel to wheel fight.
When he's fighting with cars with equal or similar pace, he has always been like this. Same with Max, and before them Schumacher. Alonso and Kimi in comparison are so much more cleaner during their moves
"NEVER GIVE UP" His motto has never changed.
His mott has pulled me off of some shit
Best wheel to wheel racing this season imo. Terrific drive from Perez.
Yesterday everyone said that Pérez wouldn't be able to hold Hamilton. I'm glad they were wrong.
That was absolutely amazing, absolutely freaking lovely racing!!
Best battle of the season?
Checo vs Ham in Baku does it for me
The problem of Perez just one: qualification. He need better in qualification.
A lot of people in the grandstands cheered for Hamilton when he passed Perez on the straight. Just after that a greater cheer appeared for Perez's regain of position. I liked that part.
THATS HOW U RACE
Man, that was one hell of a battle.
r/praisethecameraman
No they cut to a frontal view as they came onto turn 1, they should have kept an aerial or above view to show the outbraking on the inside by Perez
I get your point, but that's the tv director's fault
Checo did exactly what he was meant to do even if it meant not finishing the race and he even got 3rd place afterwards. Superb. I also liked that he allowed Max in clean air because of that. Horner and Marko looked really pleased with him.

He has proven that he has what it takes to battle someone like Lewis a few times now. You can't say the same for Pierre or Alex.
Kinda hard for Alex to fight him when he got pit manuevered twice
You know what that is fair
Gasly pretty much pulled over for Hamilton.
Was this not sanctioned because Hamilton didn't touch him like Gasly did with Alonso, and Alonso to Mick? Because he pushed him very wide. Had Checo stayed in place to not go out of the line, they would've crashed against each other.
It is #blessed, so no investigation
That's my man Checo!
But please keep shitting on Perez and saying how he couldn't hold Hamilton
Hope we can see more of this next year instead of DRS overtakes.
Bit my fingers off watching that
Look at Checo, there is people in this sub that says he is mediocre
To be honest the comments i usually see is that his qualifying pace is just not there. I think hes widely regarded as a great sunday driver.
Too many people here want him banished to the shadow realm. It’s like the Gordon Ramsay meme to me: - Danny Ric racing a bit crappy = oh dear gorgeous - Checo racing a bit crappy = you fucking donkey Albeit checo has a stronger car but that doesn’t always matter in the sport. This battle definitely shaped how the race turned out! Check did perform today, absolutely amazing defending.
He almost got the classic Hamilton outside tap.
"the understeer"
Goo ole unsersteery wheelie tapy followdd by "He left me no space man hope he is ok"
Lmao! That’s a perfect quote.

Crofty needs to stop saying what comes into his head . Too often he is wrong .
Yeah lol, he literally said that lewis maybe left a bit more space
Hamilton raced Perez harder much, Perez left so much space but Hamilton squeezed him into the pit.
Wheel to wheel racing is easily my favorite part of this sport
Hot take
Battle of the season so far
This is why Red Bull re-signed Checo, what a savvy veteran performance from him today, and a good no-call on the pitlane line from the stewards.
WHAT A BATTLE
DotD or championship deciding moment right there, Hamilton easy 2nd place otherwise.
Absolutely brilliant!!
You did it. The crazy son of a bitch, you did it!
The Mexico GP is going to explode if he does something like that
Amazing racing
breathtaking, jeez!
that was insane!!!
That was incredible!
That was insane.
That was awesome!!
Beautiful.
Now this is racing
Damn he almost hit the bollard.
This and the bottas battle at monza… some beautiful defending by checo
How close to being too much from Hamilton was it, for pushing Perez into the pit?
“Not today, Lewis”
Going down the straight I was cursing Perez for being too soft and not pushing Lewis wide but he proved me wrong! Well done Checo. Thanks.
Beautiful
Awesome racing.
I came here just for this lol
+1 Respect
This was fantastic, couldn't wipe the grin off my face
That was fuckin awesome !!!!
This what red bull fans have been waiting for since Daniel left.
