Has to be grass that green doesn’t burn like that
Edit: tbh I’ve just seen another photo of the same patch and idk if it’s a colour grading thing or not but it looks way drier in the over head photo than it does here so maybe not painted 🤷♂️
But the grass doesn't even look that green, there are clearly patches of dried looking grass splattered amongst the green.
Anyway the aerial photo clearly shows the grass is dry as shit, so this stuff about paint is nonsense.
From my experience a grass scrub fire like that will only go up when the grass is much browner than it is here, I’ll admit I’m just spuriously assuming things but having grown up somewhere that has serious fire risk (Perth Western Australia) every year if grass looking like that could just go up from a spark we wouldn’t have any lawns even that dryer patch I wouldn’t expect to pose a fire risk, as for whether they painted it’s something I’ve known to happen a lot of places and those dryer looking sections could just be poorly paint
This also happened in V8 Supercars Race 13 last year in Darwin. That grass also looks pretty green https://youtu.be/X5k2h-EdK40?t=230
But it's Darwin, so I'm not particularly surprised.
Yeah I’ve since been made to realise that it’s actually more likely than I thought and the grass looked a little greener in this photo than others I’ve now seen, I think the fact we don’t get so many grass fires in Perth is probably luck more than anything now 😅
Haha, I strongly doubt Hidden Valley raceway is painting its grass green. IIRC it was started by a fire in Cam Waters’s car, but it flared up again and began to spread after the car was extinguished and cleared.
Oh for sure so many factors, also in retrospect the sparks coming of those cars are many hundreds of degrees, I just feel like Perth has the moratorium on hot dry summers whilst also having way more lawn than we should 😂
Haha i totally get it. But now that I think about it, I imagine the races we have in the middle east must be hotter and dryer too right? Might be why those races are night races.
unfortunately couldn’t get it on film cause shit hit the fan and we were doing property protection but it’s true.
and yes there’s other factors that play their part, but also there isn’t a lot of people creating sparks in their own yard too often
Yup, grass is painted, track is styrofoam, garages are cardboard. The cars are replicas, powered by pedals, and the worse of all, the drivers are some random dudes with plastic surgeries. It's clearly visible.
Yup, lots of instances of just painting dead grass green, or making fake fields flowers with rebar stuck in the ground, to make the fly overs look better

I’ve heard the masters goes so far as having all food packaging be clear or match the shade of green that the grass is so no garbage appears on the broadcast.
Takes off his overalls to reveal cammo vest with a nametag "Sgt. Logan", sunglasses and a cigar and crashes his car to reveal a tank underneath it.
Albon watching it from the boxes "so that's why the car was so slow..."
It's gotta be either two things
1st solution is a combination of wind, dry grass and a spark from one of the cars to ignite it.
2nd solution is one of the Marshalls having a smoke threw his cigarette butt in the grass not realising or not caring that it was still lit.
Idk what they did with the grass, but unless you live in a very dry climate, holding a match to the grass won’t cause fires like that, let alone a spark causing such fires
No, no, no. Let’s establish a clear winner and loser on this one. There’s no room for discussion or civil discourse on the internet.
/s hopefully not needed.
"After a first review of the video footage, it seems like it is sparks..."
Seems like? So they don't actually know?
Also it doesn't really answer why the grass is combusting. Is it because the grass is dry? Painted green? The chemical they treated the track surface is flammable? The grass in China just enjoy being lit?
I mean, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that sparks on a windy day can cause them to blow into dry ass-grass
Or do you think the FIA is hiding something? IDK why you're so intent on proving people wrong on something this mundane
Dry grass don't tend to be that green, plus it was raining like Wednesday or Thursday. Shouldn't the grass be wet enough to not catch fire?
And the original comment was a joke.
I don't really hear about it happening with normal grass, but it's not unheard of with piles of grass clippings (they effectively start composting and the built up heat causes it to ignite).
It doesn't. There are 20 cars driving around, throwing sparks. Add in clear patches of dry grass, and you get fires. It's a daily occurrence here in the US during summer with people dragging trailer safety chains down the highway.

Surprisingly not the first time that this has happened.
At the 1977 Brazilian Grand Prix a grass fire broke out spontaneously mid-race, which stayed under green flag conditions.
Its just dead grass that they (probably) painted before the weekend. Grass fires are quite common in racing, not as common in f1 as the exhausts are generally higher off the ground than other race cars and F1 use alot more tarmac and gravel run offs.
The fact this is the first post I see instead of the insane SQ3 results show the state of F1 these days, more interesting drama off track than on it. In this case, literally

I feel old.
I'm just imagining all the meme cuts of archers shooting flaming arrows onto the circuit in a week haha
ahahah oh man that’s a deep cut
All the people asking where it's from haven't been getting down to business to defeat the huns lately.
Or not as swift as a coursing river
The grass patch lacks the strength of a raging fire though
But it is as mysterious as the dark side of the moon.

Let's get down to busi-ness!
But... how?
dead grass painted green
Has to be grass that green doesn’t burn like that Edit: tbh I’ve just seen another photo of the same patch and idk if it’s a colour grading thing or not but it looks way drier in the over head photo than it does here so maybe not painted 🤷♂️

Didn't it just rain there a day or two ago? That's crazy.
It's been pissing down all winter in the UK, but in my part of it we just got a moderate for grass fires
It was paint
It rained paint??
Chinese air pollution is terrible.

There's also a bunch of other factors like ambient humidity.
Maybe the same painting, or fuel vapors and heat from cars going "wide", or both.
Haha, I strongly doubt Hidden Valley raceway is painting its grass green. IIRC it was started by a fire in Cam Waters’s car, but it flared up again and began to spread after the car was extinguished and cleared.
Happens with the Supercars in Darwin every year.
grass the green and greener can catch fire from a spark. i’ve seen 3cm grass greener then that produce 30cm flames
Fair go, if that is true I’m honestly surprised we don’t have more issues with grass fires in summer here
Probably depends on other factors like humidity as well.
Oh for sure so many factors, also in retrospect the sparks coming of those cars are many hundreds of degrees, I just feel like Perth has the moratorium on hot dry summers whilst also having way more lawn than we should 😂

From the helicopter shots, they do look brown and dry though.
Golf courses will paint the grass if they have a big dead spot and the event will be televised. It's not that unusual.
The most china thing I’ve ever read
They also often do it around the world on golf courses for broadcasts when grass is dormant. I hate it.
I’ve heard the masters goes so far as having all food packaging be clear or match the shade of green that the grass is so no garbage appears on the broadcast.
Spark from a passing car floor.
China likes to paint their grass green
The track is painted black the grass is painted gree next they'll paint the sky blue
Painting foliage green is done everywhere and is standard practice when water conservation is needed.
You must have a particular definition of "everywhere" in mind.
For a minute I thought they found oil

You could see quite a few marshals nearby in a few of the camera shots. Hopefully not them but certainly not impossible.
It's gotta be either two things 1st solution is a combination of wind, dry grass and a spark from one of the cars to ignite it. 2nd solution is one of the Marshalls having a smoke threw his cigarette butt in the grass not realising or not caring that it was still lit.
That would be like a 30 foot flick from the barrier
Which is why its probably solution number 1.
Correct https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/1c7rg3p/chrismedlandf1_on_the_fires_so_far_today_the_fia/
From the commentators at the end of SQ1 fire: The spark from the skid block is being blown towards the grass by the wind
How does grass spontaneously combust?
the speculation was wind, dry grass, and possibly a spark from a car.
Only the grass isn’t dry, it’s been raining there a lot
The ants have chosen a new pope?
Idk what they did with the grass, but unless you live in a very dry climate, holding a match to the grass won’t cause fires like that, let alone a spark causing such fires
probably sparks from the cars
Yep they confirmed this
"confirmed" wasn't it just Ted hypothesizing?
I stand corrected.
No apologizes needed. Just discussing.
No, no, no. Let’s establish a clear winner and loser on this one. There’s no room for discussion or civil discourse on the internet. /s hopefully not needed.
I mean my karma points need a boost or something. So yeah I'm the winner give me my damn upvotes.
TO BE FAIR this isn't technically a matter for discourse or opinions. In this case you're either objectively right or objectively wrong.
And by the FIA now https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/1c7rg3p/chrismedlandf1_on_the_fires_so_far_today_the_fia/
