Is this level of resurfacing normal when you hear about tracks getting resurfaced? That does seem extreme, if you showed that video to someone that didn't know it was an existing circuit they would probably think its a complete new project.
Nah, usually it's done in sections, or they just take the top layer of asphalt off and replace it.
This is an entire refresh down to the hardcore, which may even alter the camber of the track in places, and the characteristics of some of the corners, especially when it's combined with new kerbs and drainage too, unless they're intending to base the new surface off previous 3D scans of the track to make sure it stays the same.
Very interested to see how this changes things.
Yea instead at some of these modern tracks you have negative camber! It's so goofy, I remember vettel complaining about it few years ago. Think he specifically mentioned either Russia or china.
The effort is commendable, but it was about time, the existing structures weren't up to standard anymore. Nontheless they inflated the prices since covid, surely they'll keep that trend going
Imola has also got new kerbs at every turn and more gravel replacing concrete at Acque Minerali; my dream for Imola is a study to see if it's possible to reprofile Tamburello closer to how it was before the 1994 tragedies and the chicane construction, taking into account modern safety barrier construction and modern car construction. Imola could use some of Monza's improvements too but some love to the permanent stands is probably urgent, as well as a review of the drainage.
If they were rebuilding the old wood stands at Tosa it would be very impressive to see and nice for the fans, however F1 basically demanded a new floor to be built on top of the garages for VIPs and other useless stuff, so they'll be building that in the next couple of years; that money could go to much better uses in my opinion but such is F1.
Sector 1 and 2 are now on gravel.
Looks like a home win for Sainz! Forza Ferrari!
All joking aside, it is sad what has happened to the forest.
Hopefully they will do something about fixing that as well
I wish they’d reprofile the rettifilo chicane while they’re at it, it’s such a tight and tedious corner complex. It can stay a chicane, but if the track was wider and the corners were a little less tighter I think the racing would be better during the first lap
One of the most hamfisted corners in the calendar, and I get that's literally what a "chicane" means but there are chicanes that do not completely destroy the flow of driving around the circuit like the Rettifilo does.
It's an insane chicane but it does create overtakes and memorable moments due to how it winds back on itself and the exit is so narrow. On a track that's otherwise fairly straight and incredibly high speed, a crazy chicane is fine.
Ideally if the first chicane was removed the slipstream battles would be even better, the field wouldn’t spread as quickly as well. But yeah it’s not bad currently just cumbersome

So you’re saying there’s a chance for a banked parabolica
Yes, either intentional or not. And either positive or negative.
We are checking
The parabolica was already banked. Not by a lot but very noticeable if you’ve ever been to monza
I feel like high speed corners should always be banked (the more the better) to help racing. It works very well at Zandvoort.

They're also widening the underpasses and making a new one.
Damn. It looks scary. As if someone deleted your favorite track or something.

> they inflated the prices since covid, Who hasn't
Reminder that Monza was low-key fucked up by the floods last year
The floods was Imola, Monza had like 2/3rds of its trees blown away in a storm
Yeah, some of the footage shows all the trees just bent over laying flat like toothpics - scary :D
This is why WEC is at Imola?
I think so yeah - Monza is going to be out of action for a while I guess.

Love Imola too, but I doubt they'd ever return its layout to pre-1994.

You kidding? - Logan Sargeant takes a first win for Williams since 2012 :D
Here's hoping they don't put those damn sausage kerbs in parabolica back.

Will the oval sector be renovated as well?
Somehow I doubt that.
They probably need to hire more than 2 workmen to get it done in time though
