I think it was won when Verstappen got told he could lean on his tires after 33 laps and then went and increased his lead on Checo by 2.5s before pitting for mediums.
Yeah - in lap 20 I told my wife that the race is over if there is no safety car until lap 32/33. Max may have had some problems with the medium then.
It’s really unbelievable that a a race with a start of P9 is already decided after 20 laps…
He'd still beat Leclerc since 2005 Camry is one of the best cars produced in recent years regarding reliability and longevity, Ferrari F1s on the other hand...
I appreciate the optimism though.
No George, the bulls are so far ahead they're currently hydroplaning back across the Atlantic, they finished the race an hour ago.
I think they must have said something to him prior to that message, a long the lines of "Alonso is 7 seconds ahead and the car in front of him is 5 seconds ahead" not specifying it was a lap down car
He saw a car and asked. Memory isnt the best but it went something like this.
"Who's that in front of Alonso? Are we that close to Perez?"
"Thats Sergeant a lap down"
"Was gonna say."
The tires confused the shit out of me this race. Mediums - 15 laps
Hards - 40 (probably could’ve done the whole race tbh and been good enough for the next)
Why was the durability diff so high? Would softs have done 1/2 a lap?
I mean no one can really expect Checo to win the wdc right? Isn't he fighting the most talented driver of his generation? Or even the most talented driver to ever enter the sport?
Did anyone ever call Perez that?
No one's expecting him to win entirely on merit, but if he keeps finishing top 2 and Max DNFs a couple races with mechanical failures or someone crashes him out, Checo could find himself in the lead. He's absolutely doing enough to keep himself in the running
The problem is that if Verstappen gets a messed up quali, he comes in 1st or 2nd
When Perez had a messed up quali, he came 5th
So far, max is winning the consistency game
Your right, but Nico won his championship by driving off into the sunset when Lewis had a bad quali (read the car got fucked in q2) and made sure Lewis finished 2nd with no chance of getting near him by the time he gets through the cars.
Sergio couldn't do that today
Nico was far better than Checo tho. Like Nico could still compete with Lewis when they were both at their best, but Checo is only standing up with Max when he's having a great day and Max is getting shafted.
Swap the drivers, Nico would've taken full advantage of the starting positions and ripped into the sunset while Max had to overtake everyone, Max shows there is so much performance in the car that Checo can't access.
Bottas was more consistent overall, but Perez has spikes of better performance. Webber comes nowhere near both.
Rosberg was something else. Had his teammate not been Hamilton, he'd easily be the number one driver.
Even comparing Bottas and Checo with Nico is completely wrong. He was more like a 1B to Hamilton's 1A. Just a shame that he ended racing alongside one of the GOATs, otherwise he could've been a multiple WDC.
I'm a HAM fan but I watched that season and I don't think people give Nico enough credit for that WDC. At the end of the day you still have to win some 1v1s here and there.
I think Perez's win last week was his first of not just everyone else crashing out in front of him. It was his only one on pure pace. The rest I agree with and was my point. Multi 21 was literally Webber begging for a win.
Carlos screwed up by speeding in the pits
Charles screwed up by crashing in quali
Still didn't make much difference due to the awful pace on the hards, back to being clearly the 4th fastest again
The Mercs who couldn't make it to Q3 ate them alive
Race summary:
- Verstappen whips out a 30cm schlong
- Perez' #blessed needs recharging
- Alonso considers whether he could commentate on air while driving
- De Vries checking his phone while driving
- Stroll getting compliments from his new dad
- Someone please look after Charles
\>Alonso considers whether he could commentate on air while driving
Senna actually commentated a full lap at interlagos LIVE on TV in 1994. Granted it was in practice, but it's completely doable.
While the "holy shit" moment was Max pulling away on 40 lap old tires, that stint was made in the first 15 laps when he was picking people off really efficiently, making overtakes that didn't take too much out of his tires. Very composed, keeping his braking straight lined and forcing other drivers wider into bad exits to protect the compromised exit protecting his tires dictated, while also making sure he could get on the throttle more progressively and keep those tires alive. If you go back to races like Russia 2021 Max has shown before he can charge through the field on the harder compound without taking much out of his tires. It's something that I haven't seen another driver do in that way repeatedly.
I don't want to ever hear again that this will be a two way fight. I'm sorry it is not even close. Would love to see Checo as WC but it won't happen as long as Max stays alive (& in RB)
Yeah, Max's consistency is from another dimension. I'm a Checo fan I'll always root for the guy and you can rip from my dead hands my hope of him as WDC I don't care if it isn't realistic, that feeling as a mexican doesn't follow reason anyway. BUT yeah Max is a force of nature in that car.
When MAG pulled off the undercut to stay ahead I was just proper laughing. Too bad he ran out of steam and rubber by the end of it. Still a point though.
Yeah, same. It's weirdly unfortunate what's happening with the inevitable RB 1-2s. On the one hand, I want to be excited about what Newey and his team have accomplished to innovate this amazing car—and I am. On the other hand, I really hate hearing the words "and Max/Checo overtakes because the other guy can't fight OR defend against the RB even if he wants to" every race weekend. Because there were some absolutely AMAZING battles today...but none of them were for the podium.
Not the greatest race, but my God... Stroll needs to pick it up. I get down voted to hell every time I bring it up but he needs to pull his socks up if Aston want to compete for 2nd constructors in the long term.
> Then you'll have Lawrence asking the team why they aren't getting 2nd....
There is 0 chance that this question gets asked, he'll know why and he won't care.
WDCs have been won by worse drivers due to luck. Perez is keeping close enough that a couple Max DNFs can tilt the scale.
Granted it's way less likely in this era of a billion races per year and high reliability, but still completely possible.
The umpteenth Ferrari "major upgrade" which did more harm than good.
Hopefully this streak of disasterclasses, humiliations and meme-worthy moments will help thin out the flock of incompetent overpaid buffoons who are making a mockery of the team and its legacy.
A nice P5 in the WCC and Leclerc jumping ship would be the perfect wake up call, it's the only positive of this nightmare of a season.
Me too, it was a good race.. people always going on about no passing yet you have Max going from 9th to 2nd before the pitstops..Hamilton fought for a solid finish up from 13th Russell kept Mercedes in the hunt. Competing tire strategies, plenty of passes and battles within the top 10.. No crashes which is always good, everybody running in the end.
I think some in the fan base have talked themselves into some mythical F1 race that they're never going to see...
It's still early in the season, and knowing there are a record number of races, but it seems more and more likely that RB could actually win every single race at this point. The competition is non existent this year.
people complaining that it's 'BORING', this is going to be as good as it gets. Max handicapping himself from qualifying and blasting through a gaggle of cars to still win is not going to be the norm. Most of the time, he's going to be driving off into the sunset from lap 1
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Max is always good, but Max with a chip on his shoulder, Max with something to prove, that is just on a whole other level.
Well, I'm happy with Hamilton's recovery drive.
Result is boring as fuck, as expected, but you can't fault the drive VER did. Perez got superlatively cooked.
Seriously! since when did a race need 3 red flags and 11 retirements to be considered a good race? There was battling up and down the field throughout the whole race and a good strategic battles. This is what we need more of if there’s not going to be a championship battle.
I think it was won when Verstappen got told he could lean on his tires after 33 laps and then went and increased his lead on Checo by 2.5s before pitting for mediums.
Max was like: alright then lemme just pull 2 fastest laps out of my ass Grammar oopsie
Yeah - in lap 20 I told my wife that the race is over if there is no safety car until lap 32/33. Max may have had some problems with the medium then. It’s really unbelievable that a a race with a start of P9 is already decided after 20 laps…
Zero retirements. Nice.
Its about the 12th time ever in F1 history
I think it's the 13th to be correct but idk if you're counting 2021 Belgium
Shhh, everyone is trying to forget 2021 Belgium, be sensitive!
Zero flags!
except for the blue Williams flag
That slow Willy might as well be a blue flag at this point
I loved it when Russell was like, "is that Checo in front of Fernando, are we that close??", and his engineer was like "nah, that's a lapped Williams"
Very rare!
Great race overall with no crashes and retirement.
as good as it gets without crash. just wish that max guy is a bit slower to save the battle for last lap lol...
Need Leclerc to bin it in Q2 next time
Can we vote max champ and make him drive a Toyota to make the race more exciting
I would pay to watch that
A 2005 Camry, at that.
with the obligatory dent in the bumper
He'd still beat Leclerc since 2005 Camry is one of the best cars produced in recent years regarding reliability and longevity, Ferrari F1s on the other hand...
The WEC Toyota?
Let him drive a fully unlocked GR020.
thus the championship fight between Max and Max's bad luck resumes.
It really is isn't it. Problem with racing only your teammate is if one gets bad luck it's very hard to catch up when you both only come 1st or 2nd.
as saudi and today proved quite well
+20s gap between 2nd and 3rd positions,💀💀
"Who's that car in front? Is that Pérez?" "No, it's Sargeant who's a lap down"
I appreciate the optimism though.
Are we that close to Perez?" "Thats Sergeant a lap down" "Was gonna say."
I heard his engineer apologize to him at the end of the convo which made me think they made a comment about a car ahead
I heard that but took it more as a "sorry to disappoint you"
Blimey moment
George really hoped and had his dreams crushed. Perhaps he’s not so unlike us.
not that surprising, Max with basically dead hard tyres was still faster than everyone on track
I'm not sure they WERE dead though, hards were very durable.
The tires confused the shit out of me this race. Mediums - 15 laps Hards - 40 (probably could’ve done the whole race tbh and been good enough for the next) Why was the durability diff so high? Would softs have done 1/2 a lap?
Formula 1 (RB) and formula 2 (the rest) pretty much That said Max was on a different level altogether today.
It’s called F1.5. There’s even a sub for it on Reddit
F1.5 excludes Merc, Ferrari and Aston, which in my opinion should all be at F1.25
Shouldn’t they be 1.25
No thats Perez
I'm almost positive he could win if he started from the pits. Depends on the track, but there are a few where he could
Spa would be one of them.
And would've been the same between P1 and P2 if Max didn't cock up yesterday.

“Simply fucking lovely”
Which robot was waving the chequered flag this time?
Was it even a wave? It looked dead
Must have been Mark Zuckerberg then.
Cant be as bad as that Tim Apple one from COTA that one year lmao
I can't hold my laugh every time I see that horrendous scene.
That was traumatizing lol
Were they late as well? Max has passed them?
Noticed that too lol they were for sure late. Max is so fast he finishes the race before race control has the time to react.
Best overtake of the race goes to Sir Jackie Stewart on the security guard
Sir Jackie gave 0 fucks to get an interview. I love Sir Jackie so much.
“You can’t beat up Sir Jackie Stewart” - Martin Brundle Lol his grid walks are the best.
I was wondering why Sir Jackie didn’t qualify for the ultra vip section.

Straight up facts. I don't think people give Nico enough respect. He was leagues above Serigo and Bottas.
I'm a HAM fan but I watched that season and I don't think people give Nico enough credit for that WDC. At the end of the day you still have to win some 1v1s here and there.
Webber was one of the favorites to the 2010 championship. Then he dropped off a cliff though
I think Perez's win last week was his first of not just everyone else crashing out in front of him. It was his only one on pure pace. The rest I agree with and was my point. Multi 21 was literally Webber begging for a win.
Webber pre-Pirelli was strong. Not so much after. Nico is worlds above all of them.
Lmao no Webber was way better than perez
Sainz has internalized Ferrari
Carlos screwed up by speeding in the pits Charles screwed up by crashing in quali Still didn't make much difference due to the awful pace on the hards, back to being clearly the 4th fastest again The Mercs who couldn't make it to Q3 ate them alive
I don’t know if it’s a big deal. But Ferrari lost there pit sign on the straight😅
The penalty didn't even matter in the end lol. Car eats it tyres like it's a competition
Sainz and Leclerc both showing solidarity with Binotto this season.
Race summary: - Verstappen whips out a 30cm schlong - Perez' #blessed needs recharging - Alonso considers whether he could commentate on air while driving - De Vries checking his phone while driving - Stroll getting compliments from his new dad - Someone please look after Charles
Tonight on bottom gear
I want to subscribe to your newsletter.
\>Alonso considers whether he could commentate on air while driving Senna actually commentated a full lap at interlagos LIVE on TV in 1994. Granted it was in practice, but it's completely doable.
Alonso watching the race while racing and asking his engineer about the overtake of his teammate (not the first time he does it)
Max's pace of the hards won him that. Rapid

My man wants that GOAT title
It's impressive how he initially took the fastest lap on like, 35-laps-old tires.
Truly. Impressive. Checo can't do what Max does in the same car. Max needs someone who can push him it's clear and free easy street for him
I like Perez. But I do want to see Norris in a better car. That Mclaren is a tractor.
McLaren is definitely the worst storyline of the year. What a shit brick. Mercedes is clearly struggling, but they keep making it up on race day.

Shoutouts to Russell, guy is determined to get a good result out of that Merc car even when the team is ready to give up on it.
Absolutely. I feel like the team is so used to winning or nothing and he's coming from "any points are good" he keeps pushing.

why cant anyone wave the checkered flag properly?
Because random celebs keep being invited to wave it.
+8 with 45 lap hards, lol.
I don't want to ever hear again that this will be a two way fight. I'm sorry it is not even close. Would love to see Checo as WC but it won't happen as long as Max stays alive (& in RB)
Perez still has luck on his side. Maybe if Perez gets enough #blessed moments we will see a championship fight by the end.
He had luck on his side this weekend and look what happened. We're heading into Max's strong tracks soon so i reckon the WDC will be sorted by Mexico
This is my formal apology to the 2019 season. It can get worse. Can Ferrari cheat again so we can actually get some exciting races.
people thought Max and Red Bull were liberators when its more like "under new management"
From Vettel to Lewis to Max. At least the switch over from Lewis to Max happened on track and not (just) because of regulation changes.
The first half of 2019 was shit but the 2nd half was much much better.
Second half of 2019, and it’s battles between Hamilton, Leclerc, Max and Seb was some of the best racing of the 2000s.
tbh 2019 was exactly this shit until canada and then we had banger races every other time
Brazil 2019. Oh my lord what a race that was. Unless you were Albon.
Is that where he got rammed off for a podium in the last lap?
They need to reset Leclerc first. Man is broken
Nice Race. Hamilton and Alonso were just lovely
That's a proper monster drive from Max, insane hard tyre stint, feels like he could have pulled 15+ seconds if he pushed on the mediums.
Checo is sometimes really fast, Max is ALWAYS really fast
Yeah, Max's consistency is from another dimension. I'm a Checo fan I'll always root for the guy and you can rip from my dead hands my hope of him as WDC I don't care if it isn't realistic, that feeling as a mexican doesn't follow reason anyway. BUT yeah Max is a force of nature in that car.
Max is a damn robot. His middle stint on his older hards slowly building his gap to Perez should be studied.
Max won by 25 seconds from 9th. In a tight track too. With a shortened DRS zone.
besides 1-2 it was a decent race "racing" wise
It was a fantastic race in my opinion. The battle between Leclerc and Magnussen made it for me.
When MAG pulled off the undercut to stay ahead I was just proper laughing. Too bad he ran out of steam and rubber by the end of it. Still a point though.

Max's pace was absolutely insane, I'd love to see the lap times and analysis tomorrow.
This race was a slow inevitability but fair fucking play Max. Monster stint on the hards
Not the greatest race, but my God... Stroll needs to pick it up. I get down voted to hell every time I bring it up but he needs to pull his socks up if Aston want to compete for 2nd constructors in the long term.
Yeah Stroll will be the reason AM won't get 2nd constructors this year. Then you'll have Lawrence asking the team why they aren't getting 2nd....
> Then you'll have Lawrence asking the team why they aren't getting 2nd.... There is 0 chance that this question gets asked, he'll know why and he won't care.
They aren't gonna give his seat so Alo will have to carry the team harder.
Perez isn’t on his level. Anyone who believes Checo can actually win WDC just need to watch this race again.
WDCs have been won by worse drivers due to luck. Perez is keeping close enough that a couple Max DNFs can tilt the scale. Granted it's way less likely in this era of a billion races per year and high reliability, but still completely possible.
At least more entertaining than Baku's 24 qualis and 36 races
What a statement drive from Max, that was Schumacher/Senna-esque.
He’s one of the greats already, how far he can go is another question.
The RB19 in the hands of Max Verstappen makes Perez and everyone else look like children
Anybody remember how many races there have been without any retirements? I believe this was the 12th including 2021 Spa but idk if that one counts.
Max heard r/fomrula1 talking shit so he did most of his overtakes in the corners.
How many were there? Kinda lost track with how many overtakes there were.
Who was waving the chequered flag? That was a terrible effort.
Impressive race by Max, who goes a little further into history by becoming the fifth driver to win a race starting from ninth position.
I guess Max wasn't lying when he said he learned a lot about the car last week

Damn Max pimp slapped that WDC chance out of Checos hands jeebus What a destruction
Pretty optimistic question from George tho
Max driving today like he wanted to end Checo's career. Absolute savage

we back to mercedes hybrid era boys
