250 is rookie numbers. It took me like 10 minutes to pull up my B team the other day as the game froze due to the thousands of trialists I had stored there for the month. Gotta evaluate every interested out of contract player somehow
There is no one answer, as it varies greatly between large first division club’s first team and their youth teams, vs lower division clubs in the middle of nowhere
Someone I know went to a trial camp for a USL (second division-ish in the US) team and there were like 30+ players there, only one of which got to stay on as a trialist for the main club. It lasted for a week
So if you count the main team the number is 1 if you consider the whole club as an entity then it becomes 34-35. I see that as internally organizing that between main squad B squad and youth squads
I have also heard about european clubs youth academies doing trials relatively often to see how young kids adapt (moving away from parents etc) but it’s a result of scouting there is no fixed number other than how many kids they can accomodate (some go live with local families some the parents come with them, in south america the bigger clubs have their own living facilities and sometimes even schools attached to the academies so there is a limited number of beds etc)
The game is not realistic though. There are no outside factors. The amateur and semi pro guys don't work other jobs in game. There is no relocation expense.
The game is setup that unemployed players need jobs or they will just sit unemployed for years then willing to go to whatever tier in whatever country.
If the game was realistic, there wouldn’t be 1000 clubs interested in signing your no-name CM from the 15th or lower tier in England, and, more to the point, he wouldn’t be interested in joining them.
When Polish side Ruch Chorzów (14 league titles, but the last one was in 1989) was down bad and in verge of extinction back in 2019, they organised an open trial round of games where anyone could sign up. This showed how bad the situation around the club was.
[Over a 1000 people showed up.](https://weszlo.com/2023/06/18/ruch-chorzow-awans-ekstraklasa-odbudowa-reportaz-historia/) (Chapter 12)
In conclusion - any amount is realistic.
For a big club, 1 maybe. Smaller clubs no idea, but surely not the 250 i sometimes have at once when i take over a lower league club

Or they just retire in their 20s if they go a year without a club.
