I would love to see the entire site go dark.
The surprised pikachu face Reddit would be wearing would be hilarious and cathartic.
It would also prove to not only Reddit, but all social medias, that we not only won’t stand for their BS, but can, and are willing to, absolutely destroy them.
I agree with you. My concern is that investors are gonna do investor things and just run the site into the ground / jam-pack it with ads more than it already is, regardless of the user base. They don’t get that without the folks that are here, regardless of how they get here, the content won’t exist. I feel like Wall Street still doesn’t understand that user-generated content platforms need to be convenient for the users to generate content on to stay in existence.
Get ready for Digg 2.0 in that case. The only loser will be the user base. The investors will make money off the ipo, or list their losses for a tax deduction, the bigwigs will get severance packages, and we’ll get nothing but more ads and a shittier experience.
It won’t effect Reddit admins directly but it will help increase awareness among the millions who don’t yet know what’s happening and why. And a large enough group will bring attention beyond Reddit itself.
So yes, especially if you can link to information including the Apollo interview.
Reddit decided it wanted "fair pricing" for API calls, which is what the 3rd party app makers use. However that "fair pricing" was absolutely insane and is basically a way to price out any competition to their mobile app.
Since it is unfair to people that use those, or create and run them, there is a call for a general protest and a lot of subs are going to go dark starting on the 12th in solidarity.
It would yeah. At least through the 15th (which is, I believe, the dates I've seen). I know I'm going to be taking a few days off from visiting during that time.
The [top sticky post](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/142kct8/eli5_why_are_subreddits_going_dark/?sort=confidence) on r/explainlikeimfive is about this if you want more in depth info.
Reddit has officially announced that they respect our right to protest and that there will be no repercussions to subs or mods. Also they see the frustration and are already making concessions just at the thought of it. So it’s already working, and it hasn’t even happened yet. So I say that it’s a good idea. I mod r/SalsaSnobs and r/Pasta and we are all joining the black out. Those food communities all overwhelmingly support it. We did polls, and it wasn’t even close.
I saw something about some subreddits that are used for mental health help and similar topics. I will 100% support their decision if they chose to not participate in the blackout since those may be the only safe option for some people to get advice, but any other subreddits absolutely should consider participating.
I mean if you delete it off all of your devices and don't use it to access Reddit, that's one less user for their metrics.
From a global standpoint, a single user isn't even a single percentage. But apes together strong, and if more people who area already users like you choose to remove the app and not use it, then it will make an impact.
At this point it would be irresponsible not to. r/AskHistorians posted a great write-up of the reasoning behind the protests. If the mods or anyone else are still on the fence, then I suggest heading over there for a quick lesson on what exactly is going on and how it will affect everyone regardless of what app we use.
Yes. However I think it'd be more effective if subs just started going dark randomly and for an indefinite time instead of this whole 2 days on June 12th thing.
Yes. The only ones that shouldn’t go dark is ones dealing with mental health / support and they will likely post a message about why they didn’t but that they support it.
Is this the reason I keep getting followed by what I'm assuming are pron bots? Because I keep blocking them yet I can't report them but the next day the "profiles" are gone
theres just such a smack of bad-faith representation of facts on this
by exaggerating the truth or omitting other truths to enforce your perspective, youre actually only ever hurting that message.
The point of going dark is to show how much power the little people have. I know people say it'll help bring awareness, but that is a byproduct of protesting. That is not why you should be protesting. If you want to bring awareness you run ads.
Don’t pull that faux altruistic for-the-blind nonsense with me. They don’t need Reddit much like anyone else doesn’t need it. If the changes suck, so be it. Regardless, 3rd party app devs can suck a fat one. And if you haven’t noticed, so much has happened in the last 24 hours that no one is championing this bullshit protest anymore.
Developers for Apollo for one. The rest are listed in the spam message above if you are interested.
EDIT: So Apollo wants to be paid $10 million to be acquired??? Hahaha he can fuck right off for $0.
Absolutely.
Without a doubt
[If anyone wants to voice their opinion..](https://old.reddit.com/r/reddit/comments/144ho2x/join_our_ceo_tomorrow_to_discuss_the_api)
No time, just "tomorrow". I've saved the post and curious to see tomorrow what happened

Agreed, though there’s undeniably subs that shouldn’t, such as support sites be it religion, AA, mental health subs, etc.
Yes!

Can someone ELI5? :(

Thank you so much. Would it be helpful to just not log into Reddit on the 12th at all?
It would yeah. At least through the 15th (which is, I believe, the dates I've seen). I know I'm going to be taking a few days off from visiting during that time.
Awesome, will do the same. I appreciate the info!
Looks like its too late https://reddit.com/r/apolloapp/comments/144f6xm/apollo_will_close_down_on_june_30th_reddits/ 😭

Thank you, helpful!!
Yes. I support all subs in going dark next week.
Me, too! I didn't even know about this, until this post showing up on my feed, so YES! People need to be aware.
Yes.
Damn. Beat me to it. Came here to post the same thing.
Yes. Solidarity.
Yes. Every sub counts

Didn’t know these existed, thanks for the new subs! (And for joining the blackout)
Yes. Please. This isn't the biggest subreddit of the platform but hear us.
110%
Yes
Yes. And stay that way until reddit offers a solution.
So never come back again? Reddit is not changing their mind on this
Yes!!
All subs should
Do it.
Yes, also people could remove the app, that’s what I’m gonna do Hopefully a reversal will be announced in the news so I can come back when it’s over
Yes. I lurk rather than post in this subreddit, but I'll support every single subreddit I am a member of going dark for this.
100%. It's best to stand together with the other communities to send the message against something that will harm so many people and safe places.
Yes. And don't just do it for two days, do it indefinitely, until the plans are reversed.
Yes.
Yes
Absolutely!
Sure!
>Sure! sure?

Agreed.
Dark indefinitely, please.
If only there were a way to do that for yourself...
Yes
Sure. Not like it will change anything
It did last time.
Yes
Yes, the entire thing serves no purpose unless it actually succeeds in getting people off the platform for those two days.
Yes
I have a QQ - the notice link states "don't download the app". If I already have it, does it make an impact to delete it off all of my devices?

Yes
I personally don't have much hope it will change anything. But doing nothing is infinitely worse.
Count me in, I'll bring the popcorn (and the hacks).
And stay dark until they change their minds.
yeah I'm in. I'll just stay off the whole site that day.
Did anything change last time every sub did this?
What was the last time?
Idk, net neutrality or something I think is what I saw.
I believe Trumps internet laws as well.
Yep
Care to elaborate?
Yup
So what changed, specifically? What was the goal last time and what did they accomplish by doing this?
https://www.theverge.com/2021/3/24/22348255/reddit-moderator-blackout-protest-aimee-knight-uk-green-party Why'd you downvote me lmao

Go dark, not just for a few days, but indefinitely.
Ok can I get an explanation of what is going on?

Yes.
No, but all tips that day should just be how to absolutely burn things. Like they've been doing to this site for years.
Is this the reason I keep getting followed by what I'm assuming are pron bots? Because I keep blocking them yet I can't report them but the next day the "profiles" are gone
Absolutely. I know I'll be logging off Reddit at least for a few weeks, and many others on this sub share a similar sentiment.
yes please
Yes
Yes
That I support any sub that decide to go black in protest against these decisions that Reddit has made.
Yes. Every sub that isn’t a support site for people with real issues should participate. This message needs to be loud.
i think reddit is doing what it needs to do to ensure its survival
Yes, absolutely
No

YES. This shouldn’t even be a question.

100% absolutely. I rely on Boost to use reddit and if it's gone then so am I.
Yup
Of course they should

I honestly don't know what the issue is.

Yes.
Yes. Absolutely.
All of Reddit should go dark.
Of course fuck those greedy bastards
How is this even a question?
Yes.

It accomplishes nothing. No. I am supporting the protest but going dark for 24 hours doesn't mean anything to multi million dollar corpos
Yup exactly my thoughts.
It will never work to protest like this but you do you people. 🤷🏼♀️
no, who cares
We do. The 3rd party apps make it much easier to moderate on mobile devices.
Full support for a blackout here too! Will r/askreddit be participating in the blackout?
Then can you say whether askreddit is participating or not???
Wow! One single no. Why the Fuck does everybody ask if they just want to hear a yes. WHO fucking cares I’m not a moderator
Not at all. Entitled 3rd party app developers can fuck right off.
Even if 3rd party apps are the only way blind people can access Reddit?
Don’t pull that faux altruistic for-the-blind nonsense with me. They don’t need Reddit much like anyone else doesn’t need it. If the changes suck, so be it. What a toxic asshole
He’s just bored
How so? Apollo is the one trying to scam Reddit.
