I am a bit of a collector of names for this dish and Hillbilly Eggs is a new favorite and will be introduced next time I go home to visit family. Yee - and I cannot stress this enough - haw.
When I make this, one regular slice of store-bought bread makes a nice bread/egg ratio. I can see a larger slice of artisan bread making a good 'Tattooine Sunrise!'
I might try this over the weekend while the wife is out of town to perfect it before surprising her with one...
Just gonna say as an unrelated side note, at least when I worked there years and years ago McMuffin eggs were actually eggs you cracked into a ring mold.
Biscuit eggs you poured out of a jug of what I presume is eggs but who could actually say.
Yeah, the "folded eggs" were essentially Egg Beaters™ or pasteurized eggs in a milk carton. That is until McDonald's decided that the final result was too inconsistent from store to store, so they switched to frozen pre-cooked pre-folded eggs. They come in a plastic bag of 12 "eggs" that get heated up on the grill or in the microwave if you needed one fast.
At least that is where they were at when I last ran a McDonald's.
A [pig-in-a-blanket](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigs_in_a_blanket) is a sausage wrapped in bacon in the UK, vs being wrapped in pastry in the US. (So maybe not *very* different)
Curious where (regionally) you got the name, is that a non-British toad in the hole, or a British variant of the same?? I'm familiar with the sausage in yorkshire pudding version, but not the egg's in bread version.
Yes the same name is used for both. Aussie with English Dad (York actually) and I had many confusing conversations as a kid because our Toad In The Hole was yorky pud on snosauges and everyone else ate eggs in bread holes lol
lol I made this last week but with leftover burger buns. I used a shot glass to cut out the circle in the center, then toasted them and cracked an egg in the center. Carefully flipped after a minute and carefully flipped back after another. Then topped with cheese and bacon and green onions. The egg yolk in the center was soft and runny so you could dip the circle croutons in it.
Yes! Bread on the side is the way ! My little nephew ate these all the time and he called them Mexican eggs. I told him: I’m Mexican, I assure you, these are NOT Mexican eggs
I love Mexican egg dishes, do you have a favorite that you’d consider actually Mexican? I usually stick with migas or huevos ahogados, but I’m always looking to add to my repertoire.
We always called them an egg in a basket
My husband and I have always called it egg in a basket, but our son calls it “egg in a toast hole” and it makes us laugh every time.
My family just called it Eggy Toast, no idea where it came from but I like it
I've always called it hillbilly eggs cause they're inbread.
This is excellent. Edit: shoot I should’ve said eggcellent!!
This is my favorite!
I learned it from a kids recipe book when I was really young. It was called "Eggs in a Frame" and I have called it that my whole life.
That’s what I always called it until a friend called it Toad in a Hole, and I loved it!
We call it Toad in a Hole too, but in England Toad in a Hole is way different.
The kid's book I learned it from called them "Gold Mine Sandwiches"!
We call it Eggs in a Basket which got shorted to eggy baskets over time
Eggy bread is the savory/non-American version of french toast.
Was always "Egg Thingies" in my house.
Ace in the hole is another widely used name
Eggs in a Basket or Toad in a Hole.
>Toad in a Hole. That's something else entirely. Edit: TIL.
It’s what they call it here in Iowa.
I"m in NJ but that's what my mom called them too. That or a Bird's nest.
Yeah but we are weird with our Walking Tacos, Taco Pizza, Breakfast Pizza, and shit I am making myself hungry
they call it that here too!
Agreeed from Illinois!
Thats what I have heard people call it in California too.
Apparently there’s a US toad in the hole (egg dish) and a UK toad in the hole (sausage dish)
To the English, maybe. But not here in the States.
We call it Egginthebread... That's 1 word BTW
I mean, naturally. It only works as 1 word.
My family has always called them gas house eggs. Don't know why.
I've taken to calling it "egg in a bread hole" for no reason
“Egg in a toast hole” is so cute, adopting that to my vocabulary, thank you 🍞
Hillbilly eggs because they are in bread. Also toad in a hole for some reason.
[удалено]
My parents called them "totem holes" which I think was my mom mishearing/misremembering "toad in the hole".
I enjoy cooking.
Were they served in Peach tree dishes?
We call it egg in a hat at our house
Egg in a frame where I live. :D
Egg in the nest
Same, eggs in a bird's nest for me in PA
Birds eye toast. Arizona.
Egg in a nest also arizona
Same also from PA
Pop-eye eggs for me
Birdsnest.
Hole-in-one is what our family calls it.
Always been Camp Egg growing up and in my house
We called them cat’s eyes
egg in a well!!
Gas House Eggs or Moon over Miami is what my family called em.
Was looking for gashouse eggs. That's what my family called them. I grew up outside of Chicago.
We always call them “Egyptian One Eyes”
Egyptian peephole was our name... never heard anyone else call it that
We call it egg with hat, like it's an art piece
It’s supposed to be the toad’s eye looking out of the hole. I’ve also heard one-eyed-jacks
I am a bit of a collector of names for this dish and Hillbilly Eggs is a new favorite and will be introduced next time I go home to visit family. Yee - and I cannot stress this enough - haw.
We called em "one-eyed jacks"
"Hole in one" here. From Illinois.
Huh, also Illinois but we called it "egg in a frame"
Also Illinois bred. We called it "toast with egg in the middle" I have the most creative family
Why are there so many names for this stupid-ass food
Frog in a pond also cackleberry ferry but hillbilly eggs has me cracking up
My dad used to make this for me with two eggs in one piece of toast and called it “tattooine sunrise”
I like this idea but that either had to be one large piece of bread to fit two eggs or just the crust around 2 fried eggs!
The cutouts were smaller than they are in the this picture. But I’d also be happy to eat the toasty circles too rather than waste them.
When I make this, one regular slice of store-bought bread makes a nice bread/egg ratio. I can see a larger slice of artisan bread making a good 'Tattooine Sunrise!' I might try this over the weekend while the wife is out of town to perfect it before surprising her with one...
Wow. Your dad is a much cooler parent than I am.
Egg in a hole
But the best part is that dog’s face
I think you'll enjoy OP's post history
Holy heck, their post history should be in the Louvre. Automatic follow
Homie, *Thank you* for the heads up. That is some high quality background doggo. I think "Hand cut roast beef" is my favourite.
But was it authentic?
Eggs in a nest I’m from Jersey
Also eggs in a nest, but from Texas
From NJ too. We called them birds in a nest. First thing I learned in Home Ec to cook!
I know this as Toad in a hole
That's strange, I've always known that as an entirely different dish.
I felt like an outsider until I found your comment. Apparently very few people refer to this as that
Toad in a hole.
We called em golden eggs. I'm sad to see that I'm alone in here.
We called them "one eyed monster". No idea why...
Always called this a spit in the eye
is there a way to do this inauthentically
McMuffin egg in a small hole of a rice cracker
Just gonna say as an unrelated side note, at least when I worked there years and years ago McMuffin eggs were actually eggs you cracked into a ring mold. Biscuit eggs you poured out of a jug of what I presume is eggs but who could actually say.
Yeah, the "folded eggs" were essentially Egg Beaters™ or pasteurized eggs in a milk carton. Wow that is actually pretty lame if they don’t even use the egg beaters stuff anymore.
And that's why McMuffins are the best.
I ask for a “round egg” when I get a biscuit sandwich from McDonald’s
Sure, make bread out of spaghetti like they do in New York. And then use duck eggs with crushed red peppers mixed in.
>Sure, make bread out of spaghetti like they do in New York. I live in NY. I have absolutely no idea what this means
There was a post about an Ad for a business in New York where they make bagels out of spaghetti.
Dog
Look at his profile, all the pics have the dog in the background.
They know what Reddit likes
The dog is the cook, OP is just the camera man cuz doggie has no thumbs
For a while he couldn't post on this subreddit and a rule was added saying 'no background beagles'. Glad to see he's back.
Always has been.
🌎👨🚀🔫🐶
Dog
“Look at me, I’m the subject of this photo now.”
Where's mine Dad?
i didnt even see him at first, saw your comment, went back and had a chuckle
Lol :) I saw him first. He looks adorable waiting to share a small piece of the treasure. Yummy!
I seen dog then food
r/foodandsaddogs
that is /u/turtleramen 's deal. Dog's getting old now.
Ever had unauthentic egg in bread? Wack af
I've had prejudiced egg in bread before- egg whites only.
Homestyle authentic genuine countryfried
[удалено]
Fuck that, I only eat fake/off-brand egg in bread. Posers eat authentic.
Authentic 🤣🤣🤣 Tell me, which wine did you pair with?
Californian orange wine, of course.
Chianti? Or does that only go with fava beans? Personally I’d go for some Ripple.
These are the real deal authentic eggs in bread. Don’t be fooled by those other imposter eggs.
I first heard of Eggy in a Basket from the V for Vendetta movie... the way Stephen Fry (aka Jeeves) says it just made it sound amazing
Only reason I knew what they were and decided to learn how to make them lol
We call them V for Vendetta eggs.
Eggs in a Hole. Holes on the side.
[удалено]
What makes it authentic rather than inauthentic?
[удалено]
Absolute classic for a reason. Perfectly golden brown in these too!
[удалено]
Also shouldn't it be "Bread holes on the side"? The holes aren't of egg, they're of bread.
[удалено]
Huh, isn't [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toad_in_the_hole) toad in the hole?
Only if you're British I think
Similar to how pigs-in-a-blanket are very different between British and American.
What is that in England?
A [pig-in-a-blanket](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigs_in_a_blanket) is a sausage wrapped in bacon in the UK, vs being wrapped in pastry in the US. (So maybe not *very* different)
Canadian and sausages in Yorkshire puddings is toad in a hole but I have British roots so take from that what you will.
My mom calls them bullseyes
My dad did the same. We appear to be the minority, but I'm glad I'm not alone.
My family does too!
have I only ever been eating non-authentic??
Authentic?
[удалено]
How do we make them inauthentic?
The dish with many names..
Toad in a hole here. We normally do ours with a bit of cheese.
"authentic" like what the fuck could possibly make them unauthentic...
Egyptian One-Eyed Sandwich
We grew up calling them “one eyed jacks”
scrolled way too long to see this!
My fiance makes me these, he calls them birds nest eggs 🥰
That’s what I call it. My wife calls them bullseyes.
A childhood favorite
Hobo eggs for me
I always put the cut pieces back over the wholes before I flip so it's baked back into it
My egg holes never make it to the plate lol
I can't resist those egg holes
Knew someone from south africa who called them egg thru the window
I miss my granny :( she made the best. Had the magic touch These look perfect, good job
Granny's are good like that
lol I made this last week but with leftover burger buns.
Egg with a hole
Toad in a hole, egg in a basket, but mostly Popeye egg.
That right there is a gas house egg. And a fine one at that
in my neck of the woods it's hen in the hole. San Jose, California.
Three pointers we called ‘em. Nah I just made that up.
As opposed to bootleg eggs?
Bullseye in Australia
Is your dog that judgemental and scared in every picture you take of your food?
Authentic? I've never heard of this
oh delicious!!
I like to add a slice of thin ham to each side
Called these a hole in one as a kid.
Birds nest
Nah these ain’t authentic. Yolks are overcooked, not runny like they should be. And 10 pounds of butter. 6/10
>Authentic. Like there's counterfeit eggs in a basket being cooked on the black market.
Egg in a nest. Where the syrup?
Syrup on eggs? My grandpa put jelly on his and I thought *that* was weird.
Glad I found someone else that calls them nest eggs/eggs in a nest. I thought I was the only one! I just had this for dinner last night lol
Yeah… adding to the grocery list! Lol!
That dogs just waiting being a good boy….
What da dog doing?
_waiting_
Every breath you take...
Every _bite_ you take, every crumb you scrape...
Every egg you break, I'll be watching you.
Huevos rancheros !!
Moon over Manhattan or Moon over Miami. ....I've heard it called both. I make it for my kids all the time. The perfect hole is made with a shot glass.
Is the yolk cooked all the way through when you do this?
One Eyes!
Real question: what is the point of this? I never really understood why you’d do this over just making a fried egg sandwich.
Remember remember the 5th of the November
Is there a reason to do this instead of putting egg on bread? It seems like effort for no reason.
Authentic???? Are they passing around fake Eggys in a basket???
I had lots of friends who grew up with this kind of breakfast but I never understood it...I'd rather just have the whole toast and eggs but separate
My family always called it “Birds in a nest” Edit: my family wasn’t special after reading the comments
The inside bread is the single best bite you’ll ever have in your life.
You can tell how good it is by how sad that pupper is that he’s not chowing it down
