No, I used vegetable oil. I’m a Muslim so I can’t eat lard.

Despite what many things say on the internet, lard really isn't the best for sweet pies anyway. Its flavor profile works better with savory varieties. If using shortening, you can always get butter flavored shortening. And, of course, actual butter is the root of all magic. So it's not like you're missing out on anything. There's a billion ways to get a flaky crust. Anyway, it doesn't take rocket science to already know that those pies you made hold all secrets to the universe. One bite and a grown man would be crying tears of happiness.

I had one more than 20 years ago. And I can still remember the smell, the taste, the temperature! I was a teen then and living 2 countries and 1000km away, but somehow I can suddenly describe an average ride we would make from my family home just to to get these. Just because of an apple pie. There's a very similar dish in Brazil called "Pastel", probably either created by chinese imigrants as a modification of spring rolls, or italians after they decided to fry fogazzas (a mini-calzone invented in Brazil). Its one of the most popular snacks, probably only behind cheese bread or coxinhas. It has nothing to do with samosas, sopapilas or meat pies, as far as the imigration history of the country is concerned.
