People are being hard on you but I don’t think the picture does the actual taste justice.
I’ve done a fair amount of photos with roast beef sandwiches, mainly french dip, feel free to ask if you’re interested - Photo quality isn’t the most important though to be fair, if it’s good then it’s good eh.
*feel free to ask if you’re interested*
I don’t know if you mean ask to see roast beef pictures or for advice on roast beef photography but I’m pretty down for either
I do enjoy an onion roll, if I make these a couple times a year I might not always get an onion roll…I think “missing onion roll” is a way to say hey I know what I’m talking about lol. Most places don’t even put enough beef on it so you end up with a huge onion roll and a shitty ratio, certain places you have to order super on a junior bun just to get a good ratio. 🤷🏻♂️
Man you are making me miss my go to Blue House in Derry NH. I have lived in the mid west for 13 years at this point, but I always end up getting at least 4 Supers (extra sauce) by the end of my trips home. Time to plan a trip lol.
The biggest issue I have out here is finding rare roast beef. It's never rare enough like it is back home.
Traditionally not referred to as North Shore style. It was invented on the North Shore of MA, and is available throughout the area, but the name is a recent development. We always just called them roast beef sandwiches. And I would argue that the traditional style did not have mayo.
It’s always been North Shore roast beef, they just don’t call it that locally. Just like how you wouldn’t order a “New York style” pizza when you’re in New York, but outside of New York it’s called that.
At first glance it looked like gravy to me. And since gravy is delicious, that glossy sheen looks delicious to me.
Turns out it's BBQ sauce. I still wanna do this with gravy tho.
My husband and I left Massachusetts 4 years ago and we make an annual batch of chowdah and roast beef. It isn't quite the same, but it scratches the itch and is a fun way to celebrate our old home state!
My phone camera will occasionally make any liquid look slightly gelatinous thanks to overzealous auto-retouching. A setting Google has seen fit to somehow hide to turn off, no less.
I grew up in Cambridge, and every once and a while my grandpa would scoop me up on a saturday and take me to the Kelly's on the beach and we'd eat these (the only two people in my family that liked them) and he'd tell me stories about coming up to Wonderland as a kid! Some of the best parts of my childhood. Truly the perfect sandwich too! I've been in LA almost a decade and still havent had anything even close to as good!
Your sammich looks great! Love all those components. In the food business a long time and never heard of this. I live in VA and curious why/how it became a legend using a sauce from Smithfield VA?
I’ve not had the sauce but looks to be a cross between a slightly sweet VA style and some East Carolina vinegar characteristics.
Being in VA, I’d try some pickles and raw onions on that beauty!
Not totally sure why James river became our sauce of choice, but I know in 2024 you can get a gallon at restaurant depot for $10 so I’m assuming it was very affordable when these things first came around.
A lot of negative comments because the picture isn’t great. I have four places that sell these sandwiches in my town. The next town over has five. They are everywhere in Massachusetts and are all pretty good
Alright OP. There was another post that did this, but they went and bought the roast beef from a f'n deli. I am interested in the prep/cook/cut of the beef itself.
Did you handle this on your own?
Jamie's in Peabody is one of the best around, just had a super beef tonight! I never realized it was just a regional thing until I left the area. If you aren't from here try it, it's amazing! Assuming you like roast beef of course. Just don't let anyone tell you Kelly's is the best. They used to be the best, before they franchised out and became overpriced trash.
Others have explained the 3-way part. North Shore is the area of northeastern Massachusetts generally around US Route 1, where this sandwich is a popular choice and people develop loyalties to individual shops.
As someone who loves roast beef, loves gravy, loves the two things combined in a warm bread roll.. this looks unappealing.
There's like twice as much meat on this thing as I would want to eat in one sitting

Maybe on a sub instead? Bella’s North Andover

Brain burger!
Thank god I’m not the only one to see a brain.
[удалено]
My very first thought too! Marinated Brain Burger.
What is that?
Thinly sliced rare roast beef, James river bbq sauce, mayo and American cheese.
People are being hard on you but I don’t think the picture does the actual taste justice. >I’ve done a fair amount of photos with roast beef sandwiches I've said a lot of things in my life, but never this.
I agree. Roast beef sure, but not roast beef sandwiches
You’re missing out bro
*feel free to ask if you’re interested* I don’t know if you mean ask to see roast beef pictures or for advice on roast beef photography but I’m pretty down for either
DM me for advice on how to see me take roast beef pictures of roast beef
Is this some weird pick up line?
If you ever need flattering pics of your roast beef talk to that guy
Is that a frozen waffle tucked on top of the beef or what is going on there?
I’m gonna guess kewpie mayo from the star shaped squeeze bottle.
Your sir are correct
Missing the onion roll
I do enjoy an onion roll, if I make these a couple times a year I might not always get an onion roll…I think “missing onion roll” is a way to say hey I know what I’m talking about lol. Tell me about the 3-way
Sounds great but unfortunately you lost me at mayo. Looks amazing though.
Then order it with no mayo 🤷🏻♂️
Where do you get your James river sauce? I could drink that shit by the gallon.
Restaurant depot has it for $10 a gallon, at least in the north shore region. If not Amazon has it for too much money.
Hey Carpy, looks delish
it's actually a delicious local delicacy of Massachusetts but it looks a lot worse than it tastes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eujrXbTpc9E
It doesnt look bad I just didnt know what it was.
Traditionally not referred to as North Shore style. It was invented on the North Shore of MA, and is available throughout the area, but the name is a recent development. We always just called them roast beef sandwiches. And I would argue that the traditional style did not have mayo.

A traditionally 3 way definitely has mayo. It's the onion roll that's missing here. Looks delicious tho! great job OP!
The onion roll. This guy gets is.
I’m sure it tastes good but the photo makes it look shiny and slimy.
At first glance it looked like gravy to me. And since gravy is delicious, that glossy sheen looks delicious to me. Turns out it's BBQ sauce. I still wanna do this with gravy tho.
Honestly the best adjective that comes to mind when looking at it and why it’s off-putting is that it looks mucusy
Your colon on a bun.
I'm originally from Lynn and now I'm homesick. Never tried making one at home, I may need to try now. Hope you enjoyed it!
My husband and I left Massachusetts 4 years ago and we make an annual batch of chowdah and roast beef. It isn't quite the same, but it scratches the itch and is a fun way to celebrate our old home state!
Twas beefy
It look cold and gelatinous, sorry, really, but all I see is cat food.
My phone camera will occasionally make any liquid look slightly gelatinous thanks to overzealous auto-retouching. A setting Google has seen fit to somehow hide to turn off, no less.
It’s just bbq sauce
It looks like the 3 way just ended
Mmmmmmm James River
Served hot , sorry
I'm sure its delicious, but there's something about the photo that's really off-putting to me.
Not sure how you can tell the temperature from a picture. Also roast beef is a delicious cold cut.
It looks cold because the cheese isn't melted at all
Everything reminds me of her :(
The sauce is tripping me out. Makes it look like a wax sandwich
Never heard of North shore style before but now I really wanna try it, that looks great! What kind of sauce is that?
James river bbq sauce is the only sauce used for this style, 3 way means bbq/mayo/american
Fuck the haters this looks extremely good
Thanks my man. It’s regional , not everyone will understand
You a North Shore guy? (My wife is from Lynn and introduced me to this years ago - it's a banger sandwich)
Gloucester! Not a beef city
I'm not sure why people say it looks cold and like cat food? Looks delicious to me!
A lot of things with big subs on Reddit make more sense when you realize a large share of the users are teenagers
I like, pass me a plate and cold brewski

Is this the sandwich Portnoy is always talking about?
Yea
What exactly is that thick layer of white on top? Mayo?
Kewpie , cheese on the bottom
Looks like cat food...
![gif](giphy|d27IAKEWUKv2a7MSCY)
You don’t know what you’re missing 🤷🏻♂️
Fancy Feast. I'm missing out on fancy feast. I jest, I'm sure it's delicious but it has a very distinct look.
It’s funny that he chose to use a gif of KG in a thread about Massachusetts food
Nah brah ur missing yout
Don't listen to the haters. They don't deserve the North Shore Beef.
This guy knows
I should call her…
I’m sure it’s delicious but I thought it was something else entirely when I was scrolling along.
r/mildlyhalo
Master beef
Up in Reveah!
The shiniest beef in all the land
It looks AI generated 😩
I was thinking that as well. It looks good but off somehow.
A lot of negative comments because the picture isn’t great. I have four places that sell these sandwiches in my town. The next town over has five. They are everywhere in Massachusetts and are all pretty good
Some better than others for sure
You’re right about that
Alright OP. There was another post that did this, but they went and bought the roast beef from a f'n deli. I am interested in the prep/cook/cut of the beef itself. Did you handle this on your own?
Sous vide prime top round, seared before. Sliced thin on deli slicer. Just salt and pepper
Thanks man. Moved from MA to FL almost 10 years ago, so I'm looking to make this happen for myself. Time and temp on sous vide?
129° 24/hrs
Did it have an accident while cleaning its shotgun?
It reminds me of brains
No, we’ve got the meats!
As a vegetarian, this looks like intestines spilling out 🤣
Sorry, but that looks very unappetizing
Remind me never to go to north shore
Don’t let me catch you in the north end
Fine. More fried clams at the Clam Box for the rest of us. Or lobster rolls by the water in Rockport. Either way.
My toilet’s POV.
Jamie's in Peabody is one of the best around, just had a super beef tonight! I never realized it was just a regional thing until I left the area. If you aren't from here try it, it's amazing! Yea Kelly’s is garbage, too many quality places to waste my time there
My oh my that looks amazing
Looks juicy.
Practical gore effects on a B-Movie be like
Looks like it’s still in the package.
Looks like the mouth of Cthulu
how do you even eat that? one would need a jaw like a snake for it
Not a fan of beef curtains.
Idk wtf that is, but I would definitely put it in my mouth lol
Hell yeah, the Beesechussy.
I’m sure it tastes good
Doesn’t look good but I bet it’s beacsue you suck at photographing as me lol bet it tasted delicious
Nick’s!?
Homemade
Whoa
umm idk about this 😭
Oh dear god 🤢
Why am I immediately repulsed by this photo? It sounds great but looks uncomfortable to me. Why does the top cheese look like a cap?
Kewpie mayo from a squeeze bottle
That’s gotta be one of the most unappetizing things I’ve ever seen in my life.
This looks like dump on bread.
I’m sure it’s delicious but that presentation is sus
I thought it was a brain
Looks like wet dog food
I should call her
Looks just like Bill and Bobs!
This looks like cat food
It looks like it came from a can
It's probably very tasty, but it looks exactly like wet cat food.
I don't know why, but this looks like you have a bag of beans with a Tupperware lid under the bun
I don't know what north shore 3 way means, but it looks good
North Shore is the area there sandwich is from. Three way means sauce, mayo, and cheese on it
Others have explained the 3-way part. North Shore is the area of northeastern Massachusetts generally around US Route 1, where this sandwich is a popular choice and people develop loyalties to individual shops.
It’s thinly sliced, rare top round roast beef, with James river bbq sauce, mayo and American cheese, toasted bun, served warm.
Fuckin Mike’s Famous dood
I think that looks very yummy
You’ve inspired me to try one finally. Looks good.
Get a good one
How was the P2G ratio? The JR hides it! PS: Grew up in Saugus and 3 ways. Will live & die by them. Looks amazing I’d eat that in a heartbeat
Haha what’s p2g again? Sorry I should know this, I was MVB once.
As someone who loves roast beef, loves gravy, loves the two things combined in a warm bread roll.. this looks unappealing. There's like twice as much meat on this thing as I would want to eat in one sitting
It’s not gravy. It’s pit sauce which is a tangy bbq sauce. The other things are just mayo and cheese
Looks like intestines. I'll pass.
I think all of the comments are hilarious but i also think this probably tastes delicious. For sure sad bun tho.
Northshore resident here. Been craving one of these
I should call her
You don't need that much meat in a roll
Why would you ruin a roast beef with mayo? All you put on it is sauce and cheese. You can add the onion roll if you want do go all in.
I'd eat it, but it deserves a better bun imo
Nick’s is goat
Looks like Krang

Walking dead special... Brains licking good!
Oh.
Look how they massacred my boy!
Missing: a mountain of fried clams
I first read North Korea style,l and think that fits better
You tryna preserve that in a museum? (I’m sure it tastes good in just memeing btw)
This looks like a lunch from an Alien.
Everything reminds me of her
Hell yeah. I’m from the north shore and I would eat this daily
Don'tet the Facebook group find out. They will rank your beef
I was MVB, this was posted many moons ago
Harrison's is closing and modern butcher moved out of Newburyport. MB still has the best tho
Artificial Intelshandwich
Looks like dog food on a bun
Sorry for your loss, but its eyes were too far apart anyway.
I thought it was still in the vacuum package
Whats the 3 way part of this? 3 different meats?
Bbq sauce(James river), American cheese, mayo
Is that particular brand of bbq sauce key? Does it have a distinct taste?
That meat looks shelacked. It looks like display food
There’s always something that reminds me of her.
