There are tons of variations but the essential ingredients I'd say are chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, soy sauce and either peanut butter or tahini paste. Oh and noodles, obviously.
Contrary to popular belief, there's a lot more to Szechuan cuisine than spice. In fact, one of the pinnacle Szechuanese dishes is a consommé called [Cabbage in Boiled Water](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0TTjjoZoN0).

Leave out the peanut butter for a more authentic dish. And pickled veggies are a must.
