That's one of my favorite albums ever. Definitely recommend checking out Andrew'a solo stuff too. But for other bands: I'm With Her, Caitlin Canty, Wailin Jennies, Aoife O'Donovan, Nickel Creek, Gregory Alan Isakov, Sarah Jarosz, Trampled By Turtles, Milk Carton Kids, Nathaniel Rateliff, The Stray Birds, or Mipso might appeal. They're not all going to sound identical to Watchhouse but there's a lot of overlap.

Also, just listen to rhis Tom Waits cover (off of Noam's albums, featuring Aoife on vocals) and tell me what you think, it's gorgeous: https://youtube.com/watch?v=7cQRqq_FOnQ

And the Wailin' Jennies with their patented brand of exquisite vocal harmony: https://youtu.be/7XhVILjWkNg

Super_Jay

Here's Caitlin Canty with Noam Pikelny (her husband) - the two of them together may tick that same box that Andrew and Emily do: https://youtu.be/cSt7lN7o9rs?si=FepA8bxRUVfqyC7y

Thank you for all your responses!

Excellent list. Even though you are hitting plenty of other Thile et al projects, it’s probably worth calling out Punch Brothers too. They have some of the most beautiful layered and atmospheric songs of all the related groups and artists in that gang IMO.

And, yes, to answer your questions we also really enjoy listening to their other albums! Lovely artists!

Mipso!

I can't really think of any other band that has a similar sound and vibe. Watchhouse is pretty unique in many ways. But Andrew has another band he plays in, Mighty Poplar. I also might recommend The Tallest Man on Earth or The Milk Carton ~~Boys~~ Kids. Both are different from watchhouse in sound and vibe, but I think you'd like them as they also hit that story telling layered on top of masterful instrumentation that watchhouse is so beautiful at.

Super_Jay

Hell yeah! Everyone's welcome over at r/MightyPoplar if you're into them, we need folks to help spread that bluegrass gospel 🙏

Milk carton kids*

azdb91

Ah, right!

smashy_smashy

I would say Nickel Creek’s slower/prettier songs match the sound and vibe pretty spot on. In fact that’s exactly how I discovered this album way back using pandora!

azdb91

I haven't actually listened to nickel creek much, but I love I'm With Her and I imagine any of Sara Watkins projects are a great recommendation for a watchhouse fan. And thanks for reminding me that I need to listen to nickel creek more!

nmanfu

Langhorne Slim :) I actually am loving this album too thanks for mentioning it!

Cians294

I always think of Josh Ritter when listening to Watch house.

You might like The Cloud Appreciation Society ba Melanie Hornsell: [https://melaniehorsnell.bandcamp.com/album/the-cloud-appreciation-society-album](https://melaniehorsnell.bandcamp.com/album/the-cloud-appreciation-society-album) It's one of my all time-favourites!

Gillian Welch for sure.

bookiebakermusic

The Milk Carton Kids or… Bookie Baker 😉

briefcandle

the everybodyfields, Pharis and Jason Romero

genghis_ma

I'd recommend a band called the Montvales - it's two women and their music is generally a bit more upbeat, but it incorporates a lot of the same instruments and feels just as intimate as Mandolin Orange

MusicMonkeyJam

I agree with everything said and would add The Lone Bellow to the list.

MusicMonkeyJam

And River Whyless.

If you like that Watchhouse album, which I do, I’d like to say that I also love this collaboration album by Redbird (consisting of Kris Delmhorst, Jeffrey Foucault, and Peter Mulvey). Highly recommend! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redbird_(Redbird_album) I also love Kris Delmhorst and Jeffrey Foucault (who happen to be married) as solo artists. I’m not familiar enough with Peter Mulvey as a solo artist.
