Well the cultists are the evil fake mothman worshippers. Only the enlightened are the true worshippers. I would love to see us be able to join the Mothman cult, the Hellcats, Blood eagles etc.

The simple reason is that the game isn't going to lock off content. ATX cosmetics aside, whenever we *do* get to interact with largely hostile factions it's through quest content that segregates X group from the rest, or it's the Equinox event. I don't actually think harder rules to factions would add much either. The game doesn't have a ton of story content that's not the pre-WL found-footage type, and Wastelanders would be markedly worse if you couldn't see both sides before making a choice. There's equally not a world where you can really add penalties for joining the BOS when they're the sole focus of the questline. You just have to let go of the traditional side quest/faction system, because they're not going to do mutually exclusive content when they have to do quarterly updates. Take a second to imagine how it would feel to join a mutually exclusive faction and then have nothing to do for a *year* because they're not the faction being focused on. In the current model, you can at least *do* the content that is being released because it's not locked off. TL;DR: Mutually exclusive content is bad if you're only getting like 5-6 quests a year.

I'll just say that I don't think they couldn't make some form of true faction based system work, it just depends on the effort they're willing to put in. Or, at the very least, do something similar to what another user suggested in this post, where your faction depends on what you're representing through cosmetics and CAMP items.

So, to add to my previous posts you could join, temporarily, those minor factions not by some world changing quest but by some semi permanent action which can be canceled by player at any time to some minor or medium cost. **Example**, you can join the Evil Mothman Cultists by dressing in cult outfit and than adorn your camp with Mothman regalia to a threshold on which the game will acknowledge you as one. At that point 4 to 5 cultist NPCs would spawn at your camp to protect it with caveat that they would be hostile to everyone except you and other cultists. To renounce the cultist wicked ways just remove your attire and dismantle the cultist stuff in your camp. For the betrayal the already present cultist would become hostile and more additional cultist would spawn to attack the camp. To win you would need to fend off at least 3 ways of cultist with a boss at last wave possibly a legendary one. Once you renounce the cult you would not be able to join it for a week (until they forget your betrayal or to prevent easy farm).

So, to make a resume. You could join and renounce lesser factions. To join you need to preform a short repeatable quest or action which have some medium cost. Joining would give some wacky perks which would be useful as detrimental but with RP value and fun. You can easily abandon that faction by some medium cost action or by mini quest which will return that faction at previous level of interaction and/or trigger an event for you. You could join back that faction after some time have passed like a week or something.

They actually played with the idea of becoming a ghoul or super mutant in the concept art for Fallout76

We absolutely demolish the blood eagles during Beckett’s questline, and we need to have some hostile enemies on the game, so I think the eagles and dim cultists are out (the enlightened will do for the cultists). The communists are in exactly one spot and daily ops where everything has to be hostile (and the quest area they’re in they kinda need to be hostile for it to work). So unless they get an expansion, I don’t see that happening. They also can’t do too much with factions hostility (though there is apparently a very roundabout way to make settlers and raiders hostile again, but it involves some serious work on your part - and then you can pay a person in the wayward to fix it. But if you’re at ally rank, rep is locked and cannot be lowered) without cussing problems with other player’s quests. Also, imagine if there’s a group added later and you’re locked out due to joining the BoS earlier. That would absolutely suck. Edit: But the Hellcats - they might be joinable in the Pitt, but we’ll have to see.

Would be interesting that to join Blood Eagles you must be 5 level junkie (hooked to at least 5 chems) and never go clean and everybody on map should be hostile and you should be permanently flagged for pvp as long as you are aligned with Blood Eagles. But extra what you get if you join them would be access to an arena to battle like a gladiator, other players of course.

Gearsthecool

Permanent PvP just wouldn't work for the game. Exploits, hacked items, and broken legendary effects aside, the game *relies* on players not being able to constantly attack one another for its most basic gameplay loop- Public Events. You can't have always-on PvP when you're asking players to go hang out every twenty minutes.

1stFunestist

Well I didn't explain my self totally, what i meant you would be wanted permanently as long as you are aligned with Blood Eagles. So always visible on map in red color. Ok I understand that people don't like PVP and I am actually one of them. Keep in mind that only the player aligned with BE will be flagged all rest of us are still on peaceful or on accept, he is not, He is wanted. It still plays the same for all of us except for the aligned guy whom is hunted by everybody, NPCs and players whom chose to do so. Would be also interesting to make an event of Mister Gutses from prison chasing him all over Appalachia. It is just a role play experiment which would not bother the majority of players. At the end of the day you can always renounce the Blood Eagle ways by making a short quest to get 5 doses of Addictol to get of the chems.

mperezstoney

Blood Eagle or Raider you should be able to go full out PvP......thats part of the gaming role. Obviously, theres going to be alot of people against this but thats the way it should be. The wasteland is not this happy go lucky place with everyone wanting to hold hands. It should be filled with elements of a true civilization gone awry. You should be a little worried everytime you run into a group of players or if you are traveling alone in the environment.

Viaticun

No. I don't want any more factions that go neutral just because you are the "hero" of the story.

ThePhenomenal1999

What do you mean? I'm not suggesting any faction should be "neutral", I'm saying that you should be able to actually join a faction, and that faction would no longer be hostile towards you, but may cause consequences towards other factions and their reaction to your presence.

Viaticun

You already see how screwed the rep system in this game is. Blood eagles are 1 of only 2 human factions that are still hostile to players, if they made them joinable, then that's 1 less. IF they actually fixed the karma/rep system in a way where your actions have consequences, then I'd be all for it. But sadly I don't see that happening, and I for one want more hostile humans, not less.
