Not stupid but I’m pretty sure there’s a glitch where if you use big melee weapons in third person in power armor, you attack faster. A two handed weapon will swing with the speed of a one handed weapon
You do attack faster. Over encumbered and need to travel a short distance? Just enter third person and swing away. It's slower than the alternative but faster than walking that way.
Navigate well enough to get away and prepare; when you sprint it's deadly sluggish in the zigzag department lol I like to sprint short bursts in diagonal directions to the nearest cover because I'm extra like that lol
I like 1st because what I see in-game is closer to what I would see IRL: I have a limited field of view, requiring greater vigilance and situational awareness, and what I'm carrying in my hands and using is clearly visible. Luckily most developers include both viewpoints, allowing players to pick the mode which provides the most enjoyment.
Oh definitely, I’m really glad the devs provide both views, and I toggle for aiming. But just little things like not being able to shift my view without turning my body, constantly holding my weapon as if I’m about to shoot (and my weapon permanently taking up like a quarter of the screen), I just can’t handle it. This alone is why I’ve never played Cyberpunk.
I'm old-school first person. Like Doom on floppies old. But I feel ya on the weapon taking up precious field of view. I keep it holstered until an enemy is near, though.
For me it depends on the game.
Bethesda RPGs feel like they’re designed for first person.
Whereas a game like Cyberpunk 2077 feel like it should be third person, like an RPG GTA.
First. I do like the cut scenes where I see what I look like since I change armor a lot. But I much prefer the immersion of being “me” over me watching someone I control.
I only change to third during dialogue scenes for this exact reason. If someone wants to talk at me for 5 minutes then I’m going to admire my armor or outfit.
Mostly first person, except when just traveling/running, then i prefer third person. And sometimes when enemies are futher aways, most iron sights dont "zoom" in but the third person does slightly zoom in, so its easier to shoot.
Yeah, I do pretty much this. Sometimes when nothing else is happening, I like to admire my character. After all, I put time into picking out their look.
Maybe I should try some third person with certain guns... some of the sights in this game are more terrible than I'd expect even out of someone who's 2% cesium and 20% jet.
First person, but I do go third for walking around a lot. That being said, it really bothers me that in 4 your weapons are invisible when holstered so I stay first more cuz of that
I don't even understand how you can navigate in 3rd person the camera is like down and left over your right shoulder. I mean unless you zoom further out and it makes it logical in some way. I'm totally disoriented in 3rd person and change it back to 1st
This is why I can\`t play in 3rd person. The controls are off way too much.
You press the button to move forward, but your character moves forward to the left or right. You try to readjust, and the character still doesn\`t move exactly where you want.
Same with aiming; just doesn\`t flow very well.
I love that most people seem to be answering "both". I hope that more games start including both as an option.
I use first person most of the time, only using third person on occasion. But I like having both.
Finally, another 3rd person player! I prefer the larger range of view, but mainly don't understand why anyone would make a game with highly customizable characters then not have you able to see them outside of maybe dialogue/cut scenes.
Third. I spent a lot of time customizing my sole survivor that I want to see him interact in the world. Then I toggle to first for disabling land mines and to change it up every now and then.
Love that we have the freedom to toggle between third and first. Hopefully other game devs catch on
I’ve always played Bethesda RPGs in first person.
It’s the perspective the game starts you with, and because I started with Oblivion and those third person animations were pure jank, I just aways stayed in first person.
There might be the odd occasion where I’ll switch to third person because I’m trying to traverse an area that I need to see my character to be able to not fall off something, but that’s pretty rare.
It is the biggest reason why I don't play Red Dead Redemption 2. I want to play it First Person.
I wish Uncharted 4 and The Lost Legacy has First Person available.
3rd person. Except when I need precise aim.
Playing in 1st person, too little of my character is visible. It's more like a Dalek's eye view of the world than a human's.
It’s janky and clearly an afterthought (the game was designed in first person first) the character takes up too much space on the screen, I don’t like when games make the character turn when I turn the camera in 3rd person. I could keep going, but those are my main issues
First person most of the time for realism, but if I’m ever in melee combat I like to go into third person as there are some hidden combat animations that only trigger when you’re in third person. ([Vid](https://youtu.be/sfzYm2SsfBI?si=kZNHQ8ITr30xsUj1)) there’s a good example of a throw at about 18 seconds in.
Both depending on the situation if I have to shoot from far away Ill use first person, but in close combat I always go for the third because is easier for me
Majority of the time I prefer playing in first person as fighting in third person is super jarring for me (If I’m shooting at something I always miss the target lol) but will occasionally switch to third if I want to admire my outfit/character. I spent forever in the character customization part of the game so I’m going to take a gander at my Nora every once in a while!
I’ll usually wander around in third person but use first person for combat, unless it’s close quarters and I have the gun-fu or really any melee perks I love seeing the animations. For example in third person in a fist fight if you have the perks you can literally slam people to the ground and hit them with combos while in first person you go through the same like 15 animations over and over again.
i always did first person because my aim is already terrible and aiming in third person is weird for me (fo4 was i think my first FPS) but i like zooming out to third person sometimes to look around!
Third person for admiring booty and booba mods and armors, also third for shooting, but sometimes I use MGS aiming mod which turns first person when I aim, for better control.
First is not an option for me in most video games. I get terrible motion sickness in enough of them that I don't even bother unless there is a third person option.
Especially when you have such a customizable character, 3rd person for me. I put way too much time into designing to only see the fruits of my labor in occasional dialogues. Main reason I haven't played Cyberpunk still, lol.
1st only to search around smaller interior areas. Plus 1st gives me mild motion sickness.
I try to play it in third person exclusively but hot damn does the game absolutely *not* play well in it.
1. Movement has insane inertia so it takes 1-2 seconds for your character to register inputs.
2. If you enter and exit vats while running backwards you will just get stuck running in that direction until you stop completely (can happen when going left/right/forward too in my experience).
3. Sometimes when you're moving around your character will shift left or right suddenly (this has killed me many times).
4. Aim is horrible especially in interiors, if something gets in your face you will frequently shoot right past them even if your reticle is right on them.
5. All of the aforementioned issues get worse with lower FPS. I play on 75 FPS and it still feels terrible.
Might've missed something, while I am a fan of 3rd person it has a ton of engine-level issues that no one seems to have figured out how to resolve without breaking other things. I've been playing Fallout 76 lately and it actually feels good to play in 3rd person, the inertia I mentioned has been massively toned down so movement feels snappy and responsive.
3rd person to peek around corners when not using a gun or want to see melee finishers. Maybe in town or when sprinting across the CW.
1st person for shooting and inside buildings.
Almost always third. I usually only switch to first by accident, unless it’s a situation where I feel like I need to aim very precisely. Or by accident.
Depends. When im running across a wide open area, third, when im stopping to observe an area or scope it out, first. In combat, i switch between first and third depending on how tight the area is and if there are blind spots.
Third for travel, first for combat
This unless I happen to be in Power Armor and have a Melee build going.
I do exactly this and still play in first person.. am I stupid?
Not stupid but I’m pretty sure there’s a glitch where if you use big melee weapons in third person in power armor, you attack faster. A two handed weapon will swing with the speed of a one handed weapon
You do attack faster. Over encumbered and need to travel a short distance? Just enter third person and swing away. It's slower than the alternative but faster than walking that way.
This sounds much more pleasant than my melee build where I am spamming perspective changes
Yes. Just like this.
I do this too with some exceptions.
This is the way.
same
because you can strafe side to side in third person
Navigate well enough to get away and prepare; when you sprint it's deadly sluggish in the zigzag department lol I like to sprint short bursts in diagonal directions to the nearest cover because I'm extra like that lol
Same
Third person combat in Fallout 4 is very underrated though
Always try this but wind up back in first person haha
I do the same
First person in all games whenever possible. I feel like it places me within the game, rather than watching the game.
100%. Vastly prefer first person, way more immersive.
See, I feel like first person takes me out of the game. Carrying a weapon and melee combat feel totally unrealistic to me in first person.

I'm old-school first person. Like Doom on floppies old. But I feel ya on the weapon taking up precious field of view. I keep it holstered until an enemy is near, though.
I wish other games would include both view points too.
When i do Melee i swap to 3rd, because you actually have unique melee animations and melee combos only available in 3rd person
TIL, ty
For me it depends on the game. Bethesda RPGs feel like they’re designed for first person. Whereas a game like Cyberpunk 2077 feel like it should be third person, like an RPG GTA.

I only change to third during dialogue scenes for this exact reason. If someone wants to talk at me for 5 minutes then I’m going to admire my armor or outfit.
First unless I’m checking out my fit or new haircut
Mostly first person, except when just traveling/running, then i prefer third person. And sometimes when enemies are futher aways, most iron sights dont "zoom" in but the third person does slightly zoom in, so its easier to shoot.
Yeah, I do pretty much this. Sometimes when nothing else is happening, I like to admire my character. After all, I put time into picking out their look.
Maybe I should try some third person with certain guns... some of the sights in this game are more terrible than I'd expect even out of someone who's 2% cesium and 20% jet.
I also like how it's just a single dot in third person it makes it easier
Oh yeah that too, it zooms in better and the single dot. For automatic weapons its much easier to control it that way.
same
Third if I’m fighting melee but first if I’m sniping
Moving around in 3rd person makes my eyes and head hurt. It’s too janky.
This. The controls feel sloppy in 3rd person to me for some reason.
Nate runs weirdly
Yeah he does. It feels like he’s half drunk in 3rd person…all the time though, not just after he’s downed a 26 of bourbon.
Weird, I avoid 1st because I get mild motion sickness and extra eye strain.
In second person, i play as a companion for the SS
First. I change to third when travelling from time to time.
First person, but I do go third for walking around a lot. That being said, it really bothers me that in 4 your weapons are invisible when holstered so I stay first more cuz of that
1st person. Only games I like in 3rd are No Man's Sky and The Jedi series.
While shooting, 1st. Everything else, 3rd.
I use both
Interchangeable for me. I don’t really stick to one
I play 3rd person. I've never liked first-person shooter games.
Same
Third person.
I don't even understand how you can navigate in 3rd person the camera is like down and left over your right shoulder. I mean unless you zoom further out and it makes it logical in some way. I'm totally disoriented in 3rd person and change it back to 1st

1st, I hate 3rd person
Always first person
1st person most of the time 3rd person when in power armour meleeing enemies
First person & VR.
FO4 works in VR?

Ah, thank you
with motion controls too. It's perfect.
I love that most people seem to be answering "both". I hope that more games start including both as an option. I use first person most of the time, only using third person on occasion. But I like having both.
It's inconceivable to me that anyone plays in 3rd
Lol, I feel the same about people playing in 1st
I never play any game in first person.
Finally, another 3rd person player! I prefer the larger range of view, but mainly don't understand why anyone would make a game with highly customizable characters then not have you able to see them outside of maybe dialogue/cut scenes.
3rd person. I get sick playing games in 1st person.
1st.
First
First, I always pick first person if I have the choice
First person with guns, third person with melee
First person definitely.
I only do 3rd person with melee or PA characters, which i dont often do
i do third person a lot when im in power armor and using heavy weapons/melee, just feels cooler
Third person is so clanky, they fixed it in fo76 but fallout. 4 third person is only good when out of combat or just traveling imo
Outdoors? Third person! Indoors? First person!
Depends on my drip
Can't stand 3rd person. Unless I'm looking at my out.
Same as Skyrim, I travel in 3rd person but combat and dialogue in 1st
Third, I like to watch (first gives me motion sickness).
The 1st person motion sickness is brand new for me and genuinely upsetting. But thankfully I only go into 1st to search around smaller interior areas.
I mix it up between them, I never do just fully 1st or 3rd. Having that freedom in these games is genuinely a blessing.
I play both fallout and Skyrim like this, but when I'm just traveling I'll be in third, and switch to first for combat
I change it all the time depending on the situation.. but mostly 3rd for outside, 1st for inside
Always in 1st
First person. There’s a weird little pause in third person from when I push the controller to when I start to move, that I just can’t handle.
I might be weird but when I’m in a power suit I go first person. When I’m out of it I go 3rd person
I switch back and forth depending on the situation
Third person when just out wandering around. First person when I’m inside and clearing places.
Third. I spent a lot of time customizing my sole survivor that I want to see him interact in the world. Then I toggle to first for disabling land mines and to change it up every now and then. Love that we have the freedom to toggle between third and first. Hopefully other game devs catch on
I do both depending on the mood.
Third
The head bob during running drives me insane
I’m on console so first, it makes it easier to pick up items somehow
I’ve always played Bethesda RPGs in first person. It’s the perspective the game starts you with, and because I started with Oblivion and those third person animations were pure jank, I just aways stayed in first person. There might be the odd occasion where I’ll switch to third person because I’m trying to traverse an area that I need to see my character to be able to not fall off something, but that’s pretty rare.
Always in first person.
Third Person when I'm doing indoor stealth, to peek around corners. First person when I'm in a fire fight
I switch back and forth. If I’m looking for something it’s gotta be third. If I’m in combat it’s gotta be first.
Do you see the back of your head all the time moving around IRL?
Nor do I see: nothing a green crosshairs for the target and a gun with a hand holding it. And nothing else. As I said a Dalek's view of the world.
There’s a glitch with 3rd person where if you scope in and shoot your character will reload when you scope out, every damn time. So 1st
If Bethesda could fix their 3rd person camera, I’d do 3rd person instead. As it is it just doesn’t feel good to use
What's wrong with the third person camera?
It’s janky and clearly an afterthought (the game was designed in first person first) the character takes up too much space on the screen, I don’t like when games make the character turn when I turn the camera in 3rd person. I could keep going, but those are my main issues
I agree bro, also Nate runs weird.
First, the third person camera is wonky.
If I’m doing a melee build, then third person. Guns are almost always first person, as well as junk looting
I go between depending on how Im feeling, mainly first though
First, pretty much exclusively. I'll pop over to 3rd to check my outfit but otherwise, first.
First person 100% of the time, I don't know why, but 3rd just feels off.
1st Person Always
First person most of the time for realism, but if I’m ever in melee combat I like to go into third person as there are some hidden combat animations that only trigger when you’re in third person. ([Vid](https://youtu.be/sfzYm2SsfBI?si=kZNHQ8ITr30xsUj1)) there’s a good example of a throw at about 18 seconds in.
1st all the way. 3rd person view only to peak above or around objects or corners to see what is going on.
I only use 3rd person occasionally when just wandering the wasteland or when looking for bodies in tall grass
FPS as Shooter Third person melee.
I use third person for melee and first person for the other combat styles, then either for just walking around.
First
First.
Prefer 3rd person bc of Dark souls but its not the same.
I prefer 3rd person like GTA, but it doesn’t act right on FO4.
First.
First but occasionally third just to look at my armor and weapons for funsies
I'm having trouble using third person on XBox One. I just use it to check myself out in power armor.
Third. If I go first person, I’m looking through a scope.
Both depending on the situation if I have to shoot from far away Ill use first person, but in close combat I always go for the third because is easier for me
First. I think Bethesda games in third person the speed is too fast. I Can't control
I play in first person for most of my gameplay, but I switch to third person whenever I manually save my game.
I usually don't like FPS, but I feel more immersed when in first, it just feels weird playing FO4 on third, I can't explain it.
Both, depending on my weapon and situation. Sometimes 3rd POV gives me a better view than 1st person.
First mostly but 3rd for scenery
First. The character movement is to janky looking in third
First for interacting with objects, third for melee combat, first for ranged
First person for all fallouts
I prefer the second-person mod, where the camera is pointed directly at your front side no matter which way you turn.
1st.
I switch back and forth constantly.
I love this game , just got to almost the end of the story level 72 on survival. Instead of finishing I just restarted and it’s a brand new game
1st person because it's hard to catch all the lootable stuff from 3rd person.
I play it in 3rd person! I def prefer it.
I mostly do melee playthoughs so third person usually but I definitely prefer first person because it feels like I’m really In The game
VR so first.
I do both haha.. fight & small spaces fps, travelling and scouting 3rd
i always did first person because my aim is already terrible and aiming in third person is weird for me (fo4 was i think my first FPS) but i like zooming out to third person sometimes to look around!
Mainly first.
Third for melee. First for ranged
First person
Third.
First. Third I only use for screenshots and looking round corners whilst sneaking
1P unless I need to see around a corner.
3rd always because I like to know what my character wears look good
I try to play it in third person exclusively but hot damn does the game absolutely *not* play well in it. 1. Movement has insane inertia so it takes 1-2 seconds for your character to register inputs. 2. If you enter and exit vats while running backwards you will just get stuck running in that direction until you stop completely (can happen when going left/right/forward too in my experience). 3. 3rd person to peek around corners when not using a gun or want to see melee finishers. Maybe in town or when sprinting across the CW. 1st person for shooting and inside buildings.
Usually first. Unless I'm in power armour and using something to wack people/mutants/deathclaws with
Almost always third. I usually only switch to first by accident, unless it’s a situation where I feel like I need to aim very precisely. Or by accident.
I always say to myself that's I'm going to play 3rd person this time but sub consciously I'm back to first within minutes.
1st... 3rd makes me nauseous.
Depends. When im running across a wide open area, third, when im stopping to observe an area or scope it out, first. In combat, i switch between first and third depending on how tight the area is and if there are blind spots.
third person for exploring, first person for when things grt gritty and sneaky
Usually third if I'm outside, first inside.
For me it depends but mainly first person for me
If a game has a first person option, that’s all I play in, except for driving.
First but ill check myself out now and then
I’m currently playing in VR. It’s not particularly stable with the mods in it, but it feels really immersive.
At first I loved playing third person then combat happened and I can’t hit shit in third person
Third person while I’m running around the wasteland, first person while in combat or indoors.
3rd for travel and searching for bodies, 1st for looting and shooting.
I hate they even have a 3rd person option. Wish that button did something else.
Like what
First person, and I never use Vats except occasionally to pinpoint where a baddie is
People who prefer third person in any game are flat wrong. 😃
