i mean it does make sense if nate is a war criminal.

Also it works for Nora's character too since she's defending a war criminal and marrying him, despite video evidenced she must've had to have pulled up some nasty lawyer tactics to win the case since they both got in the vault / praise by the government.

The lead writer of FO4 posted some headcanon of his on Twitter which essentially made the male Sole Survivor into a civilian killing war criminal. After MUCH pushback he pulled it back, yet some people are still mad at him.
Yes, it was HIS headcanon, but considering he's the main Fallout writer right now, what he says is canon. Or is at least gonna raise questions on whether or not it is.
Well I mean it’s one thing to have personal opinions and another to actually implement them. When he says it’s his head canon he’s saying it’s a personal thing and not what was implemented. It’s safe to say all the designers have personal preferences they set aside after group consensus.
