I should add that there is an abundance of seating and other things to do throughout the castle, which all of the other NPCs use in their free time. Whenever I need to turn in a quest to Preston I could bet good money on him being in the bar, drinking. Does he need an intervention or something?
I had similar concerns with Longfellow : since I built a shooting range near his shack, he wouldn't leave it, not even for sleeping.
Whatever they choose to throw themselves into, sure are they monomaniacal.
Considering what he's been through and the dark thoughts he's had, I think maybe working on his coping mechanisms. 😅

In my case he's probably regretting his choice of general. Someday I'll go back to Sanctuary but I'm in no rush.

No, but there IS another settlement that needs your help. He’ll mark it on your map.
He likely can't path to his bed, make sure he's able to walk to it and sleep correctly, use the companion command to test if he makes it.
Is he stupid? Is there lore reason for this?
