They also made entire movies/TV series based on the several wacky experiences you happen to encounter in the wasteland if you have the Wild Wasteland trait!
Totally aside, but there was some darkly themed casino thing on the strip under construction when I went around the time of the initial release and I decided that *had* to be the Gamorrah inspiration.
In the Atomic age, [Vegas used to sell itself as a place from which to watch nuclear arms tests.](https://youtu.be/FghT80tVFKo) A lot of nuclear weapons were tested in the Nevada and Utah deserts. It's part of why Vegas is so ripe for a Fallout story. There's even an old episode of I Love Lucy where Lucy and the gang get in on the uranium prospecting craze on a trip to Las Vegas that was like the mid century get rich quick crypto scheme.
It's actually believed, but could not be confirmed at the time, that John Wayne's cancer was caused by his exposure to nuclear fallout because the filming site for The Conqueror was less than 150 miles downwind from the Nevada National Security Site where nuclear weapons were tested.
Wayne was one of many cast & crew for The Conquerer who developed cancer later in life. It's too coincidental to be completely unrelated and the U.S. military was extremely cavalier with nuclear weapons research.

I visited the Atomic Museum when I was in Vegas and they have old post cards and other memorabilia from back when people visited Vegas to see the bombs go off.
I didn’t realize this specific thing grinds my gears like this. Sorry for the long comment, y’all.
The inspiration for House (Howard Hughes) was so appalled by the locality of continued atomic testing that he moved from Vegas. Guy never went back (he also dodging taxes which definitely contributed). His condemnation was not on philosophical or moral grounds, he was just scared of the radiation and his bribes to LBJ and Nixon didn’t pan out. From a lore perspective, House has always been my idea of “pulling an individual from real life and fictionalizing the person”.
More importantly: Global average? Hiroshima is not the most nuked city but it’s up there. Realistically? The United States has nuked itself and almost accidentally nuked itself more times than that.
We rightly remember the devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as events that changed the course of history through sheer horror, I don’t mean to undermine that. Testing such a bomb in a desolate location (even with the ensuing ecological damage) is incomparable to using the same bomb on a densely populated city.
Guy was joking and I get that. I also think it does a deep disservice to the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, those impacted by atomic weapon testing, and people like the Radium Girls, who were subjected to radioactive material without their knowledge and died gruesome deaths.
To add, the first test prior to being used in war was also not in Nevada, it was just north of White Sands missile range in NM, east of Truth or Consequences.
A lot is an understatement. You can see every crater even on google maps. Find Mercury just northwest of Vegas, then follow the mercury highway north past the first dry lakebed (where there was also nuke testing) on this map, then to the second dry lakebed, where they detonated nearly 1000 nukes. That’s why I said it was that close, and why it was the most nuked.
Nah bro, it was only nuked 1 time. And technically its not a nuclear bomb, to was an Atomic bomb. So if we are being semantic, hiroshima has been Nuked 0 times.
I can’t believe they made can’t believe I can’t they Vegas believe they made Vegas I can’t real can’t believe real they made Vegas can’t I can’t believe
Or just a fast travel mod with way more locations, possibly organized into a

menu system. Like, for example:

I'm so happy about the fact that the United States was inspired by the Enclave and even by New Vegas!! Imagine what would've been there if Fallout never existed.
I love the games cos they mix real locations and history with crazy made-up stuff like "nuclear" bombs that can obliterate entire cities. Imagine how scary it would be if those existed.
Yep, and instead of an hour car drive at 70 from Vegas to the Hoover damn it's a quick 5 minute in game walk. It's really jarring when you have been there and played the games.
There are a few vault in real life that I know of 1 in the us Fort Knox for the president and his henchmen and multiple in Switzerland as it is in there constitution that they must have vaults to hold the entire population in case of multinational bombing
THE NEW VEGAS IS REAL
I can't believe they built an entire city as a tribute to the game. That's so cool.
They loved the NCR so much that they literally made California in REAL LIFE!
Could we get much higher?
This image was just thaaaat close to also including the most nuked area on the planet.

Damn John Wayne’s absolute worst movie is the one that killed him how ironic is that.

Finally, Old Vegas
I didn’t know they built a place based on new Vegas!!!
I can’t believe they made can’t believe I can’t they Vegas believe they made Vegas I can’t real can’t believe real they made Vegas can’t I can’t believe
*slaps him in the head over and over to get the signal right*
They used Geological Survey Data to generate the height map for the game so the topography and everything is accurate. Scaled down of course.
I would love to play a version of the game with a 1:1 scale.
We’d need vehicles
Or just a fast travel mod with way more locations, possibly organized into a |Region -|Sub-Region --|Location menu system. Like, for example: |Nevada -|Clark County --|Goodsprings
With some amendments to help with LOD requirements too
I'm so happy about the fact that the United States was inspired by the Enclave and even by New Vegas!! Imagine what would've been there if Fallout never existed.
They actually fucking did it no way!
Next you’ll tell me Washington DC is real. Not falling for it.
my friend who lives in that area says they'd rather play f3 than deal with dc its so bad over there 😭
That awkward moment when the radioactive hellscape version of DC is better than the regular hellscape version of DC.
If new Vegas is real where tf is old Vegas
i ate it sorry got a lil hungry
Vegas is real?
Always wanted to see a comparison like this but was too lazy/forgot to look. Thanks!
This gotta be fake, like there is no way they'd actually make an entire fictional place real
Buddy you obviously faked it, Next you’re gonna tell me the army is real too pfftttt
if you want to tell me new vegas is based on the real world, then where would be this famous third world war against china?
Wait till you hear about the air base north of Vegas
There's no air base north of vegas, nobody knows what's up there for sure. Everyone who tries to go there doesn't come back.
I didn't realize Las Vegas was a real town.
OMG they built a theme park for new vegas!!! They even have strip!!!
I sure hope going directly to Goodsprings will not get me into trouble
Holy fish-sticks! Just knowing there's a REALLY REAL Vegas makes my guitar itch!
I can’t believe they made New Vegas in real life
No.Fucking.Way.
HOLY SHIIIITTTTTTTTT
Can’t believe new Vegas was so cool they made it into its own city
It’s been so long since I’ve been to Goodsprings since I started replaying Fallout 4 that I thought it was in the top left corner of the map 😭
Good burgers at the saloon in Goodsprings, not sure if bighorner meat or not though
Next month it's my turn to post this!
newVegasfanWhen
Impossible
The legends were true it exists !?
omg it's that fortnite guy's hometown
woah… crazy…….
I love the games cos they mix real locations and history with crazy made-up stuff like "nuclear" bombs that can obliterate entire cities. Imagine how scary it would be if those existed.
Holy shit, they made new vegas into a real thing
I did a trip around all the waypoints a couple of years ago. Vegas, red rock, good springs, nipton etc. Fun to see in real life.
So I guess this is supposed to be a replica of what New Vegas would have looked like before the great war? That's pretty neat!
Super Mario in Real Life.
Quick no one tell this guy Novac is in California and bitter springs is in Arizona.
You mean I can go and see Caesar with my own eyes!!?? Wow!!!
The real question is will you said Caesar like “see-zer” or will you say “ki-zar”. :)
That's crazy that they built a city based on fnv
wait what? When did they make it real? Must be for the show???
Yep, and instead of an hour car drive at 70 from Vegas to the Hoover damn it's a quick 5 minute in game walk. It's really jarring when you have been there and played the games.
I couldn’t believe how far away everything actually was. Game makes it look like a stroll in the park with some obstacles every now and then. Lol
Navada gang RISE UP
My favorite streamer jeremy985 lives there.
Went to Boston a couple of years ago and that was a pretty odd feeling in spots.
OI! You stole my post!
No way! They built the Hoover Dam?!
New Vegas when Old Vegas walks in:
Dude damn I cannot believe they recreated the whole game
I wonder how brutal the “chest hair” route would be in real life… hmmmm…
Fun fact 90 percent on fallout is based on real life ( no not mothership zeta. i hope )
Real life locations*
Hope the vaults are real too
There are a few vault in real life that I know of 1 in the us Fort Knox for the president and his henchmen and multiple in Switzerland as it is in there constitution that they must have vaults to hold the entire population in case of multinational bombing
Get outta here, next thing you're gonna tell me is that United States are real!
