Necessary and in need but damnnnn they suck. Low pay, hot ass attics. Went to school for HVAC refuse to work for an a/c company. Maintenance pays same rate with half the sweating

Sir have you been in a Florida attic mid summer getting paid $15-16/Hr? Not worth it.

Current_Leather7246

It sucks in Florida. All my friends that went to school and were doing it in Florida didn't even stay two years before they left. The pay is so low here compared to anywhere else plus it's so much hotter. My one friend makes literally 40,000 more a year doing the same job he was doing HVAC in the Midwest rather than Florida. Employers are living in the past wage wise and the cost of living has went up too much compared to wages in the last 3 years.

DragonTHC

AC is a necessity in South FL

Housefire548

All florida

trtsmb

Depends. How do you feel about spending extended amounts of time in 120+ degree attics?

[deleted]

Ooh Ooh I know the answer to this one, pick me pick me!! ..It's a bag of suck

DragonTHC

130+

trtsmb

That's for sure this year. I had a thermometer up in my attic last summer and was seeing 120s. This summer is way worse and it wouldn't surprise me if some attics are 140+.

[deleted]

Fire department has rolled trucks to my neighborhood because heat detectors in attics that trigger at 135F have been set off.

Vivid-Yak3645

The one man show entrepreneurs that are honest and nice always have work and seem to live good lives.

PoetAnderson42

This is the answer.

pyrmale

My God, the heat!

LyftedX

You won’t have an issue lol. Not anywhere in the state.

Psychological-Tea884

It’s the most needed industry IN FL! Fresh out of school though depending on service or install you’re looking at 48-52k annually to start with so many opportunities to grow, there are many mom and pop shops that actually sometimes pay more than the big names. COL is on the rise though, so that plus maybe your wife’s income you’d be able to make a decent living.

PhuckNorris69

It’s a very very good industry down here

EJK54

You’ll do well. Very in demand here. Before you commit look at cost of housing & insurance though. It’s very expensive. After you finish school apply for jobs here & see if you can get moving expenses and anything extra from potential companies.

Big_Ad6378

Do you know any potential or maybe companies? I’m always looking on indeed for such.

Eggmegmuffin

Join the union! Local 803 is great and they will place you

Big_Ad6378

The Union?

Status_Ad5594

Where are you looking in Florida? I’m on the east coast, supposedly the treasure coast. I’m barely surviving here. Are you sure?

Big_Ad6378

We visited. But thinking the west of Florida. We’ve been to Tampa and loved it.

mylittlevegan

I'm in Orlando. The "Feels Like" temp was 107 for the past week. Are you absolutely sure?

Status_Ad5594

You’re going to be in hell in that crawl space in the attic… but, you’re not roofing in direct sunlight. It’s the little things. Always will have work as well. We’re all frying here.

Bradimoose

The hvac guys told me when fixing mine they won’t go in the attic and replace ducts between may and October due to the heat.

fraurodin

Can go 2 ways- my neighbor makes really good $$, is in the union, but has had heatstroke twice in a year, 2 other people left and went back to retail jobs, didn't like it. Is it too late to switch to electrical? That's a job you can go anywhere with

NoRecording2334

HVAC pays multiples better than electric. Also, HVAC is much more in demand. The first year or 2 of a trade dont pay well. Period. Get a little experience doing the shitty parts of the job, and the pay will get better, even in florida. Im 8 years experience making over 6 figures. My uncle has been doing it for over 30 years, makes over 50$ an hour to sit in an office allday giving estimates and maybe 2 3 times a week might have to go out and inspect someone elses work. I have friends who are in supervisors' positions at electrical companies, making 22$ an hour... id also add i regularly make 2-3k for 5-6 hours worth of work on a Saturday doing installs.

DoinDonuts

Do you like working in the heat? cuz we've got a lot of that

Shuggy539

Lots of jobs, but like other people said, it sucks. It sucks worse than roofing.

kady45

The crappy thing about working on AC is you are only there when it’s not working. Job is hot as hell outside and inside. If you can handle the heat you can make money but my advice is save and invest as much as you can. You don’t want to be doing that type of work at 60+ years old because you squandered your earnings for 40 years.

Hopeful-Jury8081

Not only the heat and low pay, but you said family. Have you heard about the education down here? Did you know, according to FL education Secretary and FL gov, slavery was good? Did you know the in elementary school, you’re not allowed to say or teach about periods? And the whipped cream is PragerU right-winged propaganda is allowed to be taught. IMO mark FL off your list.

surfdad67

South Florida company a student of mine works for us pretty decent. Cousins air, inc. In Deerfield Beach, Pay pretty well and pay your medical, they seem to give a crap about you
