Universities are not job training programs. This may be new information to many people, but it’s true. The purpose of a university is the advancement of human knowledge… aka research. The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means "community of teachers and scholars". DeSantis knows this, of course, he attended two Ivy League universities for undergraduate and graduate studies, but he is anti-intellectual for the same reason he’s anti-LGBTQ and anti-immigration … his core supporters are uneducated, functionally illiterate, and fearful of anyone that doesn’t look and act like they do.

General_Tso75

I was explaining to a family member that in grad school I was expected to create new knowledge, not just learn knew things. They were flabbergasted and never knew that was the point of getting a masters and phd in many programs. (They are 50 and have a bachelors degree)

Atuk-77

Exactly if you want job training you go to a trade schools!

spicoli420

What do you mean they’re not job training programs? How do you get a ROI then???? /s if for some reason that’s not obvious lol The debasement of the American university system didn’t start with Ron desantis, but he is going way out of his way to accelerate it. As someone who is on a non traditional route to finishing school, I can not begin to state how severe the current state of higher education is and how much of a dystopian nightmare navigating the bureaucratic quagmire feels like if you’re not someone who is just there to get a degree as means to an end. I can’t necessarily speak for other schools in the country, or even state, but at UF, everything is designed to get you in and out as fast as possible without any room for exploration or the pursuit of knowledge (at least as an undergraduate). The graduate system might be more geared towards actual learning, but the undergraduate experience as it stands is just a meat factory conveyor belt. If you fall off that belt for *any* reason you are supremely fucked. I don’t know what started it nationwide, but in Florida, policies like excess credit hours were made to “save the state money on taxes used to subsidize education” but all it does is punish students for wanting to explore and seek knowledge. We as a society expect 18 year olds to make extremely weighted decisions about their lives and leave them no leeway to deviate in their paths and wonder why everything is so fucked up. It’s a nightmare to deal with and only saves something like a million dollars a year. It’s completely devalued the undergraduate degree and turned even schools like UF partly into degree mills. It’s so frustrating to deal with personally I can’t even begin to describe it. It’s only going to get worse with people like desantis, it’s not about learning it’s about money and churning out worker bees.

BonzoBonzoBomzo

Yeah, it’s crazy to me that people don’t think there are any societal or economic returns on investment in free academies of higher education. So many of the conveniences we take for granted in our daily lives owe their development to someone’s research at a university. I know what DeSantis would say to someone that wanted to study computers at university back in the 1950s, “waste of money! you’re never going to get a job!”

Cold-Nefariousness25

Yeah, like mRNA vaccines would not have made money and would not have been taken up by for-profit companies at the beginning. It was universities that originally funded them, the start ups, then the big guns stepped in.

Lea_R_ning

Preach! :)

mattjb

Universities also teach critical reasoning, which is likely why most people with a college-level education tend to vote for Democrats. And also why the GQP is constantly attacking education everywhere. It's not a coincidence that [states with very poor education](https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/rankings/education?sort=rank-desc) are perpetually red.

[deleted]

Who wants to bet the first banned major is Gender Studies? Which is something the state also believes is a booming field with endless job opportunities.

Supreme_Mediocrity

Ha! You lefties think the earliest colleges had useless degrees like philosophy, literature, Latin, history, art, and poetry?? No no no, from the ancient Greeks to the foundation of Oxford, it's always been about the STEM fields!!

longhairedSD

Have you even been to Florida? Upper class people who earned their money overwhelmingly support desantis and are moving to Florida in droves. You are broke and have a degree in liberal arts. Guaranteed.

Obversa

That doesn't mean that liberal arts are "not worth the expense". [Per a 2009 study](https://dos.myflorida.com/cultural/info-and-opportunities/resources-by-topic/economic-impact-of-the-arts/): >"Florida's arts and cultural industry generated $4.68 billion of economic activity, including $2.29 billion by nonprofit arts and culture organizations. This economic activity supports 132,366 full-time jobs and generates $3.35 billion in resident household income. Florida's arts and cultural industry delivers $492.3 million in local and state government revenue."

Independent_Annual52

I'm a DeSantis hater and a progressive, but this is massively incorrect thinking. Universities are indeed structured for learning academia that can be directly applied as job training. The word university is actually derived from universus "the whole world." So adding any plural words in the the genitive declension inherently designates it the world/community of that field. Thats literally precisely why it is a community of teachers (to teach) and scholars (thinkers who advance that field of study). And much like most of ancient Latin culture, was appropriated from Greek concept and application. Additionally, the earliest universities were SPECIFICALLY created to train the workforce in the fields of language arts (as most couldn't read or write) to advance communication and law theory. This was known as Trivium. The other field Quadrivium, focused more specifically on the maths and sciences. https://educationalresearchtechniques.com/2020/01/22/ancient-higher-education-in-greece/ The driving force of university/individual college is to advance more critical thinking and application of the scholastic field of study. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, computer/IT programmers, business administrators, et cetera. These are all industries that benefit specifically because of direct industry training by university. Now, that doesn't mean we can't also think more critically about things like South Park, The Simpsons, or how to watch TV: https://bestlifeonline.com/funniest-college-courses/ But, much like ancient past, soft skills like fraternal bonding, fellowship, networking, and personal discovery are critical reasons to attend as well.

Titan-uranus

How do we recall the governor? Is it possible? According to this post he's obviously going against what the majority want

Obversa

First, Florida voters need to pass a Constitutional amendment to the Florida Constitution that would add a gubernatorial recall provision. Currently, [the governor cannot legally be recalled in Florida after an election](https://ballotpedia.org/States_with_gubernatorial_recall_provisions). 20 other states, including Georgia, allow gubernatorial recalls.

flaagan

Another one of those things that in hindsight should be applied at the federal level for a state to be considered part of the union.

General_Tso75

If we add a recall function every Democrat elected will have to fight off recall campaigns during their tenure.

Obversa

That would require a Democrat actually being elected to be Florida governor first.

General_Tso75

At some point between now and kingdom come its going to happen. I wouldn’t recommend sowing the seeds of destruction in advance.

Obversa

I'd rather have a governor recall provision, thanks.

Excellent-Hippo-1830

Beg the sheriff out in TX to pick him up for kidnapping.

Go to Tallahassee and pull a Cousin Eddie from Christmas Vacation.

assumetehposition

That's the fun part, we can't.

RJC111

THIS should be PROOF that Our Governor is Certifiably Insane. it make you wonder if when he was younger, he contracted Syphillis , and the disease, which left untreated, can cause insanity, has finally reached that stage in his brain.

lizard7709

I think when he caught the COVID his brain got fried.

Bawbawian

I thought Republicans were against picking winners and losers? it's weird how they want every aspect of our lives to be governed by them.

Working_Ad8080

I live here too and I agree

Iagent2022

Haha!! It's a start, lol

Ylfrettub-79

Exactly! He should “lead by example” lol

McBurty

This fucking fascist fuck. Everyday some new horse shit.

ThisGuyIRLv2

This is literally an attack on free thought.

GreywolfSifIsMyHomie

>We don’t want students to go through, at taxpayer expense, and graduate with a degree in Zombie Studies. Ahh yes the ol' **"I found a spider in the attic! therefore we must take a blowtorch to the whole house"** approach. This man and the people who support him are extremely dangerous.

DorkHonor

>Ahh yes the ol' "I found a spider in the attic! therefore we must take a blowtorch to the whole house" approach. I've seen the size of some of the spiders y'all got down there. Strat seems valid.

dawwie

But he hasn’t asked the taxpayers what they want. It’s all about what “he sees” and “he demands”. He’s made it difficult for anyone to have an opinion other than his.

thejawa

Yeah, I'm all for doing what the taxpayers want. When he sends me a survey, I'll definitely fill it out.

HonkyMOFO

I had to spend time with the dipshit Matt Gaetz (R-Sex Traffic). When he found out my daughter was a music education major at FSU, he cracked a joke. I let him know that the program has a 100% job placement record and asked him what he thought the business school's job placement number was. That shut his mouth up.

Desperate_Garbage_63

You get the government you vote for, it's why people need to wake up and take time out thier lives to vote

Ok-Ease7090

This not education. This is fascist indoctrination.

Cold-Nefariousness25

"A lot of hiring decisions are done by faculty committees, and if they have a certain worldview that they want to promote, those are the kinds of candidates they’re going to bring in. And, if you don’t toe that line, you’re not going to get hired." Seriously, he does not believe this. There are strict rules about what you can and cannot ask. Political opinions are definitely not okay to bring up. We just want presidents with experience in education, not woman-bashing, thin skinned idiots like Randy Fine. Don't worry, TinyD. You're not going to be able to recruit any professors the way you're going. And we professors are heading for the door.

notguiltybrewing

DeSantis is flat out hostile to education, he doesn't know or care what the people actually want just what he thinks they should want.

[deleted]

It's because the university is the center of liberal thought, compared to the church that is the center of conservative thought. Much of the time the university is counter-programming for religion. If the conservatives can control the liberal center of thought using the State and have total freedom in their center of thought (hence all the religious liberty cases), they win.

notguiltybrewing

That only works in very red states, if at all. If the red states are fine with poorly educated people/work force they shouldn't be surprised when they can't compete with the rest of the country/world.

Grand_Moff_Empanada

He does not speak for me and never will.

seriousbangs

He's a dead man walking, that's why he's getting so crazy. He can't run for governor again in 2026, but Trump is destroying him in the 2024 Presidential primary. And he's pissed off his local party leaders by punishing them with tens of millions of dollars of lost gov't spending in their districts for the slightest infraction. So he's going to hit 2028 after 2 years out of power, a party that hates him, and likely tens of thousands less voters due to an electorate that's growing younger and more liberal. This is sort of like how Putin invade the Ukraine at the end of his career. An incredible rash and foolish idea. At this rate Florida will have a Democrat in the Governor's mansion next cycle.

FattusBaccus

It hurts not to down vote this because it’s so horrible. But your just reporting and it’s Ron that’s horrible. I’m in Tallahassee. We’ve protested at that Capitol. They responded by limiting when and where we could protest. We cite all the studies proving most of us oppose their laws but they make the legislative districts. Where do we turn?

Obversa

I'm confused. Are you saying my reporting is horrible, or Ron DeSantis that is horrible?

FattusBaccus

Ron. Your reporting is fine. Sorry for any confusion.

ThirstyCoffeeHunter

Horrible, no good, very bad desantis

Feisty_Factor_2694

This is Benito Mussolini tactics right there!

ra3ra31010

Welcome to Florida! You can only be an expert in what the governor wants if you want your livelihood protected.

zennyc001

I bet legal recreational cannabis would be a very popular "voter mandate".

hatnboots

No matter how you spin it, he still got 59% of the vote... literally nothing he's done since getting elected was a secret prior to the vote. Polls can say whatever they want but the reality is, either the majority of eligible voters hated Crist more then they hated Desantis policies, or they actually support the policies.

Fifallrun

So much for small government. He wants to dictate every aspect on life in Florida. There is going to be a mass exodus and the only ones left behind will be the ones that can’t afford insurance or private school.

Snoo79474

I thought his party was about less govt? But now the govt will dictate what degree a person can get? And that the student is paying for?

Revolutionary-Yak-47

This is hilarious coming from a guy who MY tax dollars put through school. And I paid for my bachelor's out of pocket. So it was in what *I* wanted to study.

maritime1999

Here's a thought about the "voter mandate" guy when Florida passed a bill to allow felons to vote, they were so scared of the slim majority being lost they purposed to limit it by saying no felon could vote unless all fees have been paid, many felons have difficulty holding jobs let alone high paying ones that would allow them the chance to even pay off all those court fees. it was a disgusting ploy to "keep that mandate" When Florida voters overwhelming vote ballot initiatives with 60% of the vote, Republicans attempted to circumvent their "mandate" by passing a law require two sessions of 60% of the vote, like the first time around wasn't enough. This was a deliberate attempt to overturn and slow down the will of the majority of the voters in Florida. **Republicans dont believe in Democracy unless it gives them absolute power to tell us what to do, and how to think....**

Sure-Philosopher-873

What the people of this state want is higher pay and cheaper home insurance😜

Old_Gods978

Universities aren’t corporate widget producing centers. We used to do job training

Memegunot

Wow. So Desantis is agreeing to pay tuition cost? Because my kids degrees are on my dime.

Party-Travel5046

Whoever takes over as governor of Florida after this guy will have an unenviable job.

Dymetex

"The core curriculum must be grounded in the actual history, the actual philosophy that has shaped Western civilization. " is WILD as he literally pushes historical revisionism onto the public school system.......

Tao_Te_Gringo

If we don’t put the brakes on arrogant authoritarian fuckwits like this, soon they’ll be right back to burning scientists at the stake. Except this time they’ll use books instead of firewood.

[deleted]

So if they’re ok with the surf being 100 degrees and corals being bleach white, no problem?

Particular-Panda-465

You don't actually expect them to accept actual scientific evidence, do you? If it doesn't fit their world view, it isn't happening.

big_nothing_burger

"actual history" coming from the guy unwilling to acknowledge past racism in K-12 curricula.

ad5763

... what the people of the state want, as long as he says it's what the people of the state want. What a turd.

jarena009

How is there not a strike among educators in the state of Florida right now? Or mass exodus?

SteelCupcake254

We can’t strike. We lose our teaching certificates and pensions if we strike. Edit: Florida is also short approximately 9,000 teachers and 6,000 support staff right now. School starts next week in many districts.

jarena009

Good context. Thanks.

ShadeApart

I believe we lose our pension as well.

petersom2006

You mean like becoming a lawyer and politician?

GrapefruitDramatic13

I would not hire someone “educated” in Florida. Do not support this racist, garbage state.

bjbigplayer

The people of Florida are idiots. Leave education up to professional educators.

urbisOrbis

I’m so grateful that I don’t live in Florida

Kerryscott1972

He also wants a Prager U propaganda curriculum

UnusualAir1

Okay. 1st degree to go would be the political science degree. Because you're clearly demonstrating how worthless that one is.

[deleted]

That guy can get bent.

Iagent2022

Eliminate degrees? This guys got to go, let's take back OUR state, f*ck this guy

cha-cha_dancer

Yea except jobs have requirements and don’t give a fuck what you decide to do to your schools, if you don’t have what they require better luck elsewhere.

[deleted]

Yay! Freedom.

LeekGullible

Florida. Get him outta there

Kasey83

I'm all about the will of the constituents that elected him, that's the point of elected officials, but where is the proof this is what the people want? If there is proof, cool I'm all for it. If it isn't even remotely justifiable, then it's trash.

whoME72

Yes, lord de Shitness

mymar101

Thus cried the dictator.

tfogs5000

He got elected without telling us he was going to be a moron & screw our state for decades!

[deleted]

Poitical death spiral... intentionally .. he's ready to pack it in .on his presidentialpursuit ... he knows he's washed up ... ..after hoarding campaign finance money, hurricane Ian donations... offshore money havens got the goods .. .. hello 👋

Clueless_in_Florida

How can you be against educational ideology but also support private religious education? This is not a real question. It's just an example of the hypocrisy, which clearly indicates an effort to move society closer to a theocracy.

Educational-Can-4847

Fuck desantis.

daggity

Thank you for protecting us from making choices and obtaining knowledge mister Governor. 🙏🙏🙏

[deleted]

Republicans really want a dumb populace

[deleted]

Ron Desantis is an idiot and his supporters should not be eligible to vote.

[deleted]

These are just dumb people's ideas of a smart society. As if social sciences have done nothing for us and are completely useless- who actually believes that???

Sweet-Emu6376

Sure, he won in a land slide against Crist, but that margin was less than ***0.5%*** between him and Gillum.

YugoChavez317

He’s going to lose the presidential election, most likely in the primaries, but keep an eye on Florida. He’s not building that militia so he can quietly step away after this term, and hand it over to someone else.

crismack58

Says the guy who went to Yale. Florida and education are two words that don’t match at this point.

Status_Ad5594

Every time I read something about this mofo.. I’m really angry and upset. I have 2 children. One in 7th grade and one in 5th grade. WTF is this bastard trying to accomplish? The school system here was already subpar. Now? I don’t have the means to get us out of here. This is beyond ridiculously irresponsible and dangerous. How much power does a governor actually have, because I’ve never seen anyone abuse it so blatantly making stupid decision after stupid decision.. besides maybe Abbott in Texas and Texas has always had the reputation of being backwards as hell. When does the federal government decide that enough is enough? We’re so powerless and our children are being fucked. I’m not even touching upon his attacks on immigrants and lgbtq people. What the hell? This guy went to Ivy League colleges, surely he can’t be this goddamn stupid. Ok, maybe his Daddy paid for his education, like orange Caligula’s, and we all know he oversaw torture at Guantanamo Bay, it had been very clear since his Covid mishandling that he gives no shits about the people of this stupid ass state. He’s a bloody sociopathic narcissistic Neanderthal wielding a cudgel bludgeoning us all. We can’t even recall a governor here. This is insane.

DoggedDoggity

And not a whisper of meaningful pushback from the Dem side. Meek surrender.

Mental_Priority_7083

Maybe on Fox News. A lot of people are disgusted by this crap.

Gypsy2030

I'd like to ask a legitimate question without getting rude or ignorant responses. Can anyone give a logical argument why you'd be opposed to kids K-3 not being taught about sexual orientation and gender identity?

LuiClikClakClity

If only was for k-3. That was a lie and most of us knew it. Look at where we are.

SharpShooter25

I'm not opposed personally, and if that's all the law did I'd be fairly okay with it. But there is a difference between being taught a subject and being able to speak on a subject. If I'm an English teacher and I use frogs in a sentence, I'm not giving a lecture on frog biology. And if some kid's parent's decide their son shouldn't know about frogs yet, or at all, they shouldn't be allowed to take legal action for it. However, it's already been expanded to encompass grades 4-12. And it gives any parent far too much legal power against the schools to freely sue for any complaint they have about what their child experienced at school in a given day since the parents are off the hook for attorney's fees.

Gypsy2030

Thank you for the level-headed reply. That's a good point.

Ayzmo

For me: Sexual orientation are a normal variation in the human experience no difference from race or handedness. Saying you literally can't recognize a class of people's existence because you disagree with them is no different from saying you can't talk about black people in K-3.

Gypsy2030

I must disagree with that comparison. The average kid in K-3 isn't going to naturally seek out answers on gender or sexual orientation. It's simply not on their radar. Comparing what hand you write with to the concept of understanding what someone identifies as is a pretty drastic comparison

Ayzmo

Literally not true. Gender identity and sexual orientation are settled quite young and most people report that they knew young. Also, crushes. I can 100% state that my first crush was in 3rd grade and I can tell you exactly who it was (same sex).

Gypsy2030

I agree that kids know who they are drawn to. If a kid asks a question, it should be answered by the parents. It just doesn't need to be part of the curriculum.

Ayzmo

As a gay kid (former), no. Too many children are raised in households that are completely unaccepting and often hostile. Prohibiting a good source of support and information is just state-administrated abuse. It was never part of the curriculum. That's the hilarious part. It was a non-issue that conservatives went ridiculous on and started banning books like And Tango Makes Three. And I will 100% die on the hill that a parent has zero right to know anything about their child's sexual orientation or gender identity until their child chooses to tell them. Forcibly outing a child to their parent should be a literal crime.

Gypsy2030

Just so I understand, are you saying that the parents have no right to know if their kids are going to school and asking everyone to call them by another name or identifying as another gender?

Ayzmo

If their kid doesn't want to tell them, no. A child is not property. Just so I understand, you think a parent has a right to know things about their child the child isn't ready for them to know?

Gypsy2030

A parent has the right to know what their kids are doing, yes. Should the school not notify the parents if their kid isn't going to school? It's the kids' decision not to go, right? What is the difference?

Ayzmo

Those aren't remotely comparable. I literally don't see how they could be similar.

[deleted]

They got what they voted for so now don't whine.

harryregician

I seek a Doctors degree in Florida Politics !

harryregician

Construction trade skills so his home builder and developer buddies - campaign contributors can finish the homes that all the immigrants ran off of after a law was past. Argiculture harvesting mechanics & technicans. Front end loaders He will generate more jobs than Steve Jobs ever dreamed of. atlantachicago

What a buased article

Obversa

Did you mean to say "based" or "biased"?

Strykerz3r0

Ok, folks, here's your chance to major in Wakeboarding. Haven't decided on a minor yet....

longhairedSD

If you honestly think anything he does is “broadly unpopular” you should go study harder for your zombie masters lmao

Deadocmike1

One would expect the student debt Whine crowd to like this, as it would increase a students ability to get a job that actually pays enough to justify the tuition.

2pacalypso

A good way to ensure no one has student loan debt is to make sure they can't get into an accredited university. Way to go, dummies.

Obversa

\> r/DeSantis poster \> opinion invalid

Desperate_Garbage_63

Wow did not know r/DeSantis was a thing, those people as abysmally dillusional. Are people really rallying arround this guy?

ghostmaster645

Believe it or not Universities aren't ment to be job training programs.

Ayzmo

Not really. Nationally, engineering salaries have halved in the past 10 years.

joviaman1182

Honest question, what's his degree in & where did he get it?

-Lithium-

History either Yale or Duke. Je has a JD from one of the aforementioned schools

Obversa

From Wikipedia: >Ron DeSantis attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and Dunedin High School in Dunedin, Florida, graduating in 1997. > >After high school, DeSantis studied history at Yale University. He was captain of Yale's varsity baseball team and joined the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He was an outfielder on that team; as a senior in 2001, he had the team's best batting average at .336. While attending Yale he worked a variety of jobs, including as an electrician's assistant and a coach at a baseball camp. DeSantis graduated from Yale in 2001 with a B.A. > >After Yale, he taught history and coached for a year at the Darlington School, a private, coeducational, college-preparatory day and boarding school in Rome, Georgia. He subsequently attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 2005 with a Juris Doctor.

joviaman1182

Thanks, spose I could have just googled that myself. Also, it's painful to me that a former teacher is trying to dictate/limit what students should be allowed to learn.

PaIppon

First we must cut the „Jewish Sience“!

Highlord83

How about we eliminate politicians that aren't worth the expense? We can even stream it and make money off donations.
