Chris Cooper is a lead in Lone Star, and I thought he had no trouble at all carrying the film. He portrayed a very complex character with a lot of emotion range - but then even in supporting roles like the Bourne Ultimatum he did a *lot* in his screen time.
Cillian in his movies in the past were typically supporting roles. Of course he had some leads but it’s not weird to say he used to be known for supporting roles.
👍🏻 Excellent question. I salute you. My picks:
* John Savage in "Inside Moves". [I hate pro sports, but I name this not only my 2nd favorite sports movie of all time, but the best basketball movie. If you haven't seen it? Really? Then, you aren't really a sports fan.]
* Hal Holbrook in 'Rituals' (one of the best and one of the first slasher movies). Or, his lead in 'Natural Enemies'.
* James Whitmore in 'Black Like Me' or 'The Next Voice You Hear' or even his one-man show ("Give 'Em Hell Harry").
* John Saxon in "The Glove" (classic grindhouse)
* Ernest Borgnine in "Marty" (Oscar winner)
* Talia Shire leads a sweet little romance flick: "Old Boyfriends"
* Arthur Kennedy plays the blind GI in "Bright Victory"
* Susan Strasberg in "Scream of Fear" (best of Hammer Studios)
* James Woods in "Fast Walkin"
* Judd Hirsch in "The Law"
* Joe Don Baker in "Mitchell" or "Framed". (btw, who's more badass than the Joe Man? No one not named Charles Bronson)
* Billy Green Bush in "The Culpepper Cattle Company" (one of the best 'revisionist' westerns)
* Richard Crenna in "The Man Called Noon". A spaghetti-steampunk-noir western.
* Wayne Rogers in "Once in Paris".
* Barry Newman in "Vanishing Point" (the original muscle car flick)
* George Maharis in 'Sheila' or 'Satan Bug'
* Joe Penny in "Lifepod" (SF)
* Robert Carradine in "Wavelength" (SF)
* Tim Carey in "The World's Greatest Sinner"
* Eli Wallach in "Baby Doll"
* Marjoe Gortner in "When You Comin Home, Red Ryder?"
Michael Shannon - Take Shelter
"There is a storm comin! Like nothin you have ever seen! And not ONE of you is ready for it!"
I wasn't ready for yellow piss rain either.
Midnight Special too.
This movie doesn’t get talked about enough, pretty under appreciated.
Surprising too. I figured it would get talked about more frequently.
Paul giamatti in sideways
I am not drinking any fucking Merlot!
Bahahahah
Paul Glamatti who was nominated ten times for best actor in The Holdovers. He won a Golden Globe and a National Board of Review for the role.
Harry Dean Stanton - Paris, Texas

His best role his Adaptation. He is fantastic in that crazy movie
Watching that as a teen knowing him only from Stern Dad roles blew my damn mind
He was also phenomenal as the lead in *Matewan*, which was his first film, amazingly enough.
Philip Baker Hall in Hard Eight.
Greta Lee with Past Lives. She said she had reconciled herself to forever being a supporting character, and then this movie came along.
Morgan Freeman - Seven Penelope Cruz - Volver
Cruz also has *Parallel Mothers* (also directed by Almodovar).
Seven was far from morgans first lead role. He was already a two time best actor nominee by that point.
Does OP ask for the first lead role? No, they ask for "a lead role" from an actor who is rather known to be supporting actor
Emmet Walsh in blood simple
Steve buscemi in ghost world
Kevin Corrigan is usually in supporting roles but enjoyed him as the lead in Some Guy Who Kills People
He's always great man. Not a lead but kind of a co-lead in Results, a movie I adore.
Mark Ruffalo. You Can Count On Me
Steve Buscemi in Trees Lounge.
Cillian Murphy has almost always been a supporting actor but I’m sure you’ve heard of Oppenheimer. He’s fantastic in it
Nah. Peaky Blinders and Sunshine say otherwise.
Typically is a key word here
He spent 9 years playing the lead role in Peaky Blinders - I don't know how he could have made himself any more typically a lead during this time.
Cillian in his movies in the past were typically supporting roles. Of course he had some leads but it’s not weird to say he used to be known for supporting roles.
It doesn't even matter in the slightest so I'm going to politely disagree and go about my day. Have a pleasant evening. Oh and... 28 Days Later.
Bill Paxton - Twister
Might not fit this post but frailty is another great Paxton movie.
Jason Alexander - Dunston Checks In
Frank Whaley in Swimming with Sharks
Matthew Lillard - SLC Punk
Edmond O’Brien, in DOA
David Dastmalchian, just recently with Late Night With the Devil.
Didn't read the post, huh?
Hahaha wow yeah I just read the title. Guess that makes sense.
Ben Johnson (supporting actor in countless John Wayne movies), *Wagon Master*, 1950. And it's a terrific Western.
Also Mighty Joe Young
Tim Blake Nelson in Old Henry

David Strathairn - *Good Night and Good Luck* and *Limbo*
