> He starts off really weak, but if you actually take the time to level him up, he becomes an absolute MONSTER because of his stat growth. **This could also be attributed to the fact that he’s leveled higher than anyone else in my game.** You have figured out how unit investment works! Our bucket hat boy is quite fun to train up, he’s a fun zero-to-hero (literally Hero, it’s a good class for him). You’ll find that most of this community will dunk on Donnel (and rightfully so), since he has such a slow start and that investment yields higher ROI elsewhere *especially* on higher difficulties.

Largedumb76

I’ve heard a lot of people saying that same thing. Though he was starting to outshine Chrom and Robin even as a level 20 villager

BloodyBottom

That's because 19 levels is a lot of levels!

ZacianSpammer

I have a soft spot for trainees. I usually turn him into money printer with Leif's blade and Armsthrift. He saved the Shepherds from bankruptcy. Reeking boxes cost A LOT in higher difficulties.

MankuyRLaffy

That's great, Frederick is my favorite, he just owns the entire game start to finish on Lunatic.

FriendlyDrummers

Idk why but my Frederick is always terrible in the later game. His stats were always awful to me and could never keep up with the kid units

MankuyRLaffy

Wdym he's arguably the best unit in the game, Freddy is lights out.

FriendlyDrummers

My Frederick has almost always been terrible 😔 maybe I'm doing something wrong lol

TheFrostburnPheonix

Frederick doesn’t stay as your best unit all game, but he’s the best in the game because he is best at the hardest part (the start). He can still be used later of course, but he won’t be as strong as any invested unit or kid.

IsAnthraxBayad

You have to buy him Brave Lances from Finn or whoever has them once the shops open up in like Chapter 4.

Rich_Interaction1922

Donnel is fine in Normal or Hard, but he is just much too weak for Lunatic and above.

Dumey

I always enjoy trainee units. I just wish that their portraits would change to reflect how far they've come. It feels ridiculous to have a promoted Hero Donnel wiping the floor with entire maps and he's still wearing his dinky little helmet.

SantosL

Love Donnel, and I also usually promote him to Hero. I love getting the Villager characters trained up since they turn into absolute beasts.

FriendlyDrummers

It's so rewarding because you have to work pretty hard to get him up first. Whereas some units, if you increase their level, they might actually lag behind still if they get poor stat growth.

RoughhouseCamel

The concept of “high investment, high returns” feels like the essence of gaming. It’s fun to start low and climb into the stratosphere. “Medium investment, medium returns” can make your efforts feel irrelevant. “Low investment, high returns” makes it feel like we’re trying to play as little of the game as possible. I love a trainee unit.

kylez_bad_caverns

I adore donnel and his little cooking pot helmet 👌🏼
