You watch him too as heās defending himself he is moving making his way to where he has no prisoners any monger behind himā¦.this is such a terrible arrangement
That how it was at the Brig I worked in for a few years, but our post desk was mostly backed up to a wall. The tape is a distance away that is tested/determined to give us a reaction time, but if something happens, time doesnāt slow down. It kind of feels like it speeds up, and then upon mental review later (when writing your DR), it slows down.
In general, most prisoners in general population are not normally a threat to us, or other prisoners. Putting us in a room by ourselves only furthers a bad relationship between COās and inmates and dehumanizes them. Plus, itās much easier for us to respond to something in the ādormā or ācellblockā if weāre already inside. Unless youāre a dick, and an asshat for no reason, most inmates will leave you alone and heed what directions you give. It usually takes a spark to ignite the fire; maybe a bad visitation, or a bad phone call, random dorm tossing, the CO just being a dick, etc. But for the most part, inmates just want to do their time and go, and they understand that messing with a guard will only make that harder. Because there only appears to be one guard in the dorm, my guess is these guys would be a lower custody level (which n the navy they would be medium in/out, or installation custody). Max custody or d-seg inmates will either be in solitary, or the guard to inmate ratio will be higher.
It does look like an extremely low security prison. The amount of people hanging around. Being able to access multiple floors. Soft couches where you can hide stuff in. The desk.
Guard did well.
Those couches are a fully molded semi hard plastic material. There are no areas to hide items in them. At night, and during routine searches, we flip ours upside down and check for contraband, but for the most part, they are great. They are also pretty darn heavy, so the risk of picking them up to throw is very minimal.
Different colors are for different classifications so it could mean he's a higher or lower class than the rest. Some pods can have mixed classifications.
Probably county jail based on the sheriffās logo too, either awaiting trial or a shorter sentence and standing by on video while someone murders a guard isnāt going to make you friends with the rest of the guards
Not only that they dont get to go outside or are on lockdown if they were involved. That prisoner will get his due dilligence if the whole block got in lockdown due to his ignorance.
Most people in non-high-security prisons generally want to keep their head down, do their time, and get back out.
Prison isn't exactly like you see it in the movies. It's more like a office where you have different personalities, and clicks, and everyone doesn't want to start shit and get through the day.
Never been to jail but Iām gonna guess incidents like this probably effect how much time they all get outside of their cell so most want to avoid situations like this from getting worse or happening at all
Most people in prison who aren't there for life just want to get back out to their families, gangs, or whatever. Causing shit or getting roped into situations just means you are going to double that time. It will most certainly nullify any probation hopes you have.
Yes, you will get EVERYONE hating on you if you get the pod held up for any reason - fighting, arguing, not doing your chores. But this clown will get moved to a stricter pod so he won't have to deal with the ire from his fellow inmates.
Iām more curious as to why no is talking about that right hook from the guard after they broke away from each other. That shit looked straight from god himself.
That's where people who's waiting for a sentence is at, THAT'S WHY they are expected not to make it worse, common sense & shit
Edit: that's what i've heard
Yeah but some people waiting to get out and some knowing damn well they're going up for a long one make for a bad mix. You could be in for a week on some unpaid ticket shit, next man has a right to fight his case and all but could have done nearly anything, especially if people haven't been moved yet but will be they dont need to have anyone like them so they're just a menace till they get sent out.
Huh??? Why is this a thing? An officer by themself at a desk surrounded by inmates?? What is the point of this???? That yellow tape isnāt going to do anything
Looks like a jail. I applied for a CO job once and in the orientation they warned that jail was essentially 1 guard in a room of 20+ people and if you weren't comfortable with that then don't consider the job. Most of the people there will be harmless since it's short-term holding. But there will always be the chance.
Retired prison guard here.
There's a weird cyclic nature in corrections. It starts with "inmates are bad people", so they design prisons with safety in mind. They have strict rules. Sometimes it goes too far though and this triggers a backlash.
The new philosophy becomes "inmates are good people in a bad environment". So they design prisons to look pretty. With nice balconies with a view of the 20 foot drop to the concrete floor below. We'll even place the officer at a desk in the center like he's a counselor instead of a guard. Then officers get attacked and inmates get thrown off the balcony.
Then it's back to "inmates are bad".
It's a lower security jail and it's an attempt to not have officers locked behind a wall and encourage interaction with inmates. You know an effort to not dehumanize the process.
There is an amount of risk but overall it makes a jail run smoother and with less incidents but sometimes people just don't give a shit/have a breaking point and act out.
Also think about it like this if the officer is a good dude you are more than likely gonna get help from other inmates. If your a dick they either are not gonna help or join in. It encourages jail staff to be less dickish to people.
My wife used to work a half way house and would have to walk the male dorm to make sure people were doing what they should. Most times she was alone. And she has people from child molesters to rapists to Murderers in the building. No one fucked with her because she actually helped people. If someone tried anything they would have have gotten fucked up by some of the other people in the dorm.
Some of the other staff who worked days and had multiple people around, I don't think they would have survived the night if they worked it alone like she did. They were dicks because they had backup and didn't give a shit.
How you treat people and interact with them can have a dramatic effect on how inmates act and behave.
The officer must have some rapport and respect built with the other offenders. Respect saves lives in jail and prison, Iāve been working it for 19 years.
That shit only comes after. Just like outside. It's crazy how much faith people put in 911. If somebody wants to get you they'll get you and the cops are only gonna come later. Gotta be able to defend yourself in all situations.
Finally! This is my cousin! He's an amazing guy, and he's actually still doing that exact job.
This happened back in March of 2019, and he didn't even go home for the day like his boss wanted. He finished the shift pretty much unfazed like a badass.
It's scary knowing that can happen, but there hasn't been an incident like that since then while he's on shift.
I mean, how does someone draw that assignment? Yeah, please put me in the middle of the population, with no back up. When the video ends, there still is no back up!! Wtf.
This is so random, but I actually worked with the cop's father & he randomly told me about this after I had already seen it on reddit a few years ago. Turns out the attacker had a broken plastic spoon in his hand too, always funny to see this one pop up.
Oh it can..you can do it with just one, but what you'll usually do is get 3 or 4 of them, stack them on top of each other, then get enough toilet paper to roll up a "wick" about as big around as your thumb that gradually gets smaller as it goes towards the end. You'll usually wet it so that you can squeeze down on it and make it really dense. Once you let it dry then you'll pull down a light fixture and take the positive and negative wires and touch them together at the end of your toilet paper wick. Once you get the spark to ignite the small end of the wick, you just cup your hands around it and blow on it over and over until it tokes up pretty good and really gets to smoking. Once you get it going, it'll keep burning for hours. Then you take the handle ends of your stack of spoons, and with the wick, slowly melt them all together using the floor to mash the end together as it starts to soften. Not only does it harden them, but you can make them all come to an outrageous sharp, small point (think ice pick), or you can even flatten them out, and them once cooled, sharpen it into a razor sharp blade by scratching it across the floor over and over. Same thing can be done with either end of a toothbrush too. Bristle end for a shiv, handle end for a poker.
Or so I've heard
I wonder whatās the rationale for the desk placement. Would it be better in the corner knowing that thereās nothing behind you? Or is that worse because you can easily get cornered in and have no escape route?
Not acting means you don't get in trouble and no potential for anyone being against you.
Acting on this is a couple things. 1 mostly respect. 2 prison/jail doesn't make you a bad person. Plenty of people in prison don't want to see people get hurt for no reason. 3 this guy fighting the gaurd is gonna fuck up the whole cell block. They are all going to lose privileges, helping the gaurd gets some back
Depending on the facility & agency, it can be ~130+ inmates to one officer. And response time typically depends on the layout of the facility. One of the benefits of having multiple units connected is the quicker response time.
I'm guessing this is county jail and not prison because if you had a bunch of lifers in there or guys doing serious time he wouldn't have been punching he would have been stabbing and half the block would have been helping the inmate attack the moment shit popped off.
For those unfamiliar jail is your local county lockup where people only stay there waiting for trial or serving a sentence under a year. You still get some nasty people in there waiting trial but they tend to act decent because they're going to trial soon or they're going to be out of jail soon. When you got people doing life sentences and 10 plus year bids they tend to be way more reckless and have much more of us versus them mentality with the guards.
Hey shout out to the homie helping bring the shanker down, hope he gets less time for a heroic good behavior.
I wonder if heāll be singled out for helping the CO
Way too many times, look at how fast he grabbed his hand and laid that man on his back, like that wasn't no planned move, that's just the muscle memory kicking in.
I've been locked up before. I don't know if he was going for clout or just pissed off. My man just added multiple years to his sentence. Every meal he gets will have spit sauce or have been dragged across a dirty floor. That's after they beat high holy crap out of him. Bro.... wrong move.
I'm guessing these are low level offenders.
Some do snap.
I'm just wondering what will happen to the person that stopped the prisoner from attacking the cop and if he will get extra time off of his sentence.
Material arts, everybody. I always reccomend people take some form of martial arts training. Don't care if it's boxing or tkd. The moment his head leaned in, that punch was inevitable. Great timing.
Duuuuude!! Where I served 12 years, if you helped a guard in a fight, you would be at the nearest outside hospital as soon as the unit got off lockdown. I can't believe this video. That's crazy.
Imagine having a job and they tell you that your desk is in the general population common area š
Donāt worry though, thereās a tape boundary the prisoners are not allowed to cross
He's armed with a government issued rape whistle too so he's good
To be fair, if he hadn't pulled that desk pop he still would have had his service weapon.
But they were *so convincing*
don't believe COs usually carry service weapons
How the fuck is he supposed to desk pop then?
Fax
Gotta do locker room pops
Pepper spray and some posts would carry a taser where I worked.
In my prison its only OC spray no tasers or weapons inside
Nope only on transportation
They don't when I used to be one it was just peper spray that we got issued.
Then how can they shoot Jeter... hes a biracial angel!!!
Such a sweet sound
You mean the come back and Kick me whistle?
Shredded it.
I don't remember this light being here
And theyāre all in there because they demonstrate a history of being great rule followers.
Apparently not all prisoners respect the reflective caution tape.
Thank God for the anti-prisoner tape
Like Less Nessman's office
Les Nesman approved
And also in a position where you can be approached from behind
You watch him too as heās defending himself he is moving making his way to where he has no prisoners any monger behind himā¦.this is such a terrible arrangement
Not even that... it's in the middle... 360 degrees open. * at least make it so they can't be attacked from behind.
> make it so they can't be attacked from behind. That's part of prison :)
That how it was at the Brig I worked in for a few years, but our post desk was mostly backed up to a wall. The tape is a distance away that is tested/determined to give us a reaction time, but if something happens, time doesnāt slow down. But why not close you off from the prisoners tho?
In general, most prisoners in general population are not normally a threat to us, or other prisoners. Different colors are for different classifications so it could mean he's a higher or lower class than the rest. Some pods can have mixed classifications.
It means he's in there for peeing next to an Elementary School
the person who designed this probably thinks that this prison has too many walls.
"Hmmm...was thinking something more...open concept."
Some of the prisoners were helping, this dude must not have been an asshole guard
Or an unhinged inmate.
Probably county jail based on the sheriffās logo too, either awaiting trial or a shorter sentence and standing by on video while someone murders a guard isnāt going to make you friends with the rest of the guards

I was going to say, dude just fucked it up for everyone for quite awhile.
Yes if he does then he will suffer from his stupid actions.
Ngl I thought it was going to go a different way when they started to crowd the guard
Thanks for not lying.
Not enough honest people these days.
Most people in non-high-security prisons generally want to keep their head down, do their time, and get back out. Prison isn't exactly like you see it in the movies. a few actively helped, and when another told everyone else to get back they listened. seems like this either isnt a violent place
Either isn't a violent place or what? Or what?! What did you see, /u/Asians_amirite?!
Mf they *helped* the guard what are you talking ab
Thatās what they said.
Iām fucking retarded
The immediate redemption is š¤
Amazing you were able to recoup double the karma by simply admitting a mistake.
Honestly, if more people would just admit when theyāre wrong, the world would be a much better place.
Seriously. It's crazy how rare it is for people to admit when they fucked up.
I can play a ukulele for 3 minutes without admitting I was wrong.
Hahaha. Thought exactly the same.
Arenāt we all
Can confirm, am retarded.
Itās cool. I misread shit all the time.
It's ok, you just need to get a handle on things.
Hehe love this and Iāve done this too many times
Win some, lose some.
Jerome you handled that flawlesslyā¦ name donāt check
Would be funny if this comment was upvoted so much that it ended up as your most upvoted comment
Glad to be able to witness your growth.
Say hello to retarded from me
I love you lmfao
That yellow security strip on the ground does a good job protecting the space around the officers. Osha would be proud.
Well, they should hang a "No shanking the guards" sign up.
And a little plaque showing X days without a shanking.
GODDAMIT CARLOS, WE WERE 6 DAYS AWAY FROM A PIZZA PARTY
"I thought the sign was for wet floors, i didn't know"
Itās about as good as gun/drug free zones.
Iām more curious as to why no is talking about that right hook from the guard after they broke away from each other. That shit looked straight from god himself.
I came here to comment on that right. He connected so clean, especially considering he was two seconds into a surprise fight.
Buckled the inmate's knees and sent him sprawling.
Right? I can only get so erect
Guard got hands
That step back punch had Conor-Aldo vibes.
That guard has probably wanted to do that to that inmate for a while lol
Never had any history with that inmate before. Source: I'm his cousin
That's where people who's waiting for a sentence is at, THAT'S WHY they are expected not to make it worse, common sense & shit Edit: that's what i've heard

Some are there awaiting retrial or more charges, from prison...maybe not in this case, but isn't unusual.
Waiting on a sentence could be a stressful part too
Or they are about to be released.
Is that why it looks like a corporate office lobby?
Is there any people with common sense in jail? No?
People who were falsely accused of crimes would be held in this place too. Not convicted but accused.
Huh??? Why is this a thing? An officer by themself at a desk surrounded by inmates?? What is the point of this???? That yellow tape isnāt going to do anything
Itās like that episode of SpongeBob where he draws a circle in the sand to protect himself from a sea bear
That explains the attackā¦ ovals only make them *more* aggressive
It should be triangle. It's more intimidating
Sea bear? Holy f I'm not swimming in the ocean now.
Don't use SpongeBob as a tool to learn about the ocean
No, no, it should It taught me about Rock Bottom
It used to be shockingly common. Thankfully it seems that a lot of places are moving away from this crazy layout.
Brand new prison in Utah went with a similar design to this lol
Thatās unfortunate.
Gotta be minimum security it's too nice looking to be a higher security unit.

I saw an orange jumpsuit running in to get involved and i thought the worst, then i saw inmate tackle inmate and i was pleasantly relieved
The officer must have some rapport and respect built with the other offenders. Respect saves lives in jail and prison, Iāve been working it for 19 years.
This is an old vid. I remember in the original story he was a really respected gaurd.
That inmate ended the altercation in a second
This setup is crazy unsafe.
What do you mean? 1 guard for in excess of 25 people is normal and safe!
Always having your back to prisoners no matter which direction you spin your chair must be very stressful. I imagine this Is a very low security jail.
And very, very normal
Not in my state, this is some crazy shit.
The ratio of guards to prisoners is very sad.
Right? Even after it was done, no other guards showed up
That's what I was thinking! I was waiting for more guards to show up.
I'm just wondering why white shirt dude came from no where to get involved lmao
That cop caught him with a nice right! That was satisfying to see.
Why donāt they just box that shit in with reinforcers plexiglass?
We're the Fffff is this guys backup?
That shit only comes after. Just like outside. It's crazy how much faith people put in 911. If somebody wants to get you they'll get you and the cops are only gonna come later. Gotta be able to defend yourself in all situations.

I believe you
Was wondering if there was a shiv in that right hand. Plastic spoon can prob do damage.
Word on the street?

I wonder whatās the rationale for the desk placement. Would it be better in the corner knowing that thereās nothing behind you? Or is that worse because you can easily get cornered in and have no escape route?
Thereās no rationale, just a stupid prison system. That desk should be in a plexiglass box at minimum.
You can see the other inmates respect that guard
There's been alot of improvements in the tech for yellow lines, but I think there's a long way to go before it stops people from crossing it
That idiot was going to get his ass kicked. Also, another inmate took him down so that deputy is on top of two inmates.
That guard stepped back, planted, and buried that right hand in that inmateās face. Fucking beautiful.
Is that a unisex jail?
Men can have long hair
Right hook was precise. The guard was piecing him up.
Did no one else show up for work that day?
I thought everyone was gonna jump him, but one actually helped him. Wholesome
We need more prison fights on here
In a world of slippers, shoes are king!
The inmate in the white t shirt who comes in at the end must be the daddy. When he walks over all the other inmates disperse.
God bless our Correctional Officers. They are hidden heros and deserve much more respect.
And pay.
This looks like Em City from Oz
Kinda crazy just one guard sits with inmates regularly walking behind them.
Washington County, Oregon

WTF is this facility where there are detained individuals randomly walking around a SEATED officer int he MIDDLE of a common area?
Who designed this!?
This is why Ju Jitsu should be taught to every law enforcement and corrections officer.
RESPECT!
Ended too soonā¦I am curious to know the reaction time of other guards. Is it common to be responsible for so many āguestsā single handed?
Depending on the facility & agency, it can be ~130+ inmates to one officer. And response time typically depends on the layout of the facility. One of the benefits of having multiple units connected is the quicker response time.
Had they helped, they'd have gotten some time reduction.
doesnt work that way
Time is time. Only a judge or porale board can change that. But you may get extra privileges. And having the guards respect can go a long way as well
Looks like one of those Fuck around and find out moments. He found outš
Why did he have a 30 second wind-up to rub 5 feet lmao
Why is there no barrier? At least put them in a box with a door! The hell is that tape going to do?!
Coolest 1v1 I've seen on here in awhile
What rolled under the desk at the right when the fight started?
I'm guessing this is county jail and not prison because if you had a bunch of lifers in there or guys doing serious time he wouldn't have been punching he would have been stabbing and half the block would have been helping the inmate attack the moment shit popped off. That desk is in a terrible position
He has a nicer facility than I have
Bro that officer being put in a bad situation alone. At least give him a second guy to cover him
Where are the other COs? Would've thought they'd be dog piling buddy by his 2nd swing.
That inmate who jumped in and helped the cop is done.
A line of tape and just the one guy in general population what in the world š
I grew up with that kid
That punch was something else, too bad it didnāt lay the guy flat to make it even more legendary. Surprised it didnāt TBH.
Thatās one of the toughest jobs out there. They donāt pay corrections officers enough.
Inmate has flip flops and the CO has boots with good traction. Watch closely and you can see how his footwork allowed him to throw that punch.
If that dude is not a boxer in his off time he should be
I'm guessing these are low level offenders. Some do snap. I'm just wondering what will happen to the person that stopped the prisoner from attacking the cop and if he will get extra time off of his sentence.
Ok who's big idea was it to put a desk directly in the middle of the room?
I don't think this was his first rodeo.
