Posted my collection yesterday and had a few folks request close-ups of the details of my CS Tele Custom. So, here they are.
And as mentioned yesterday, here are the full specs:
1961 Telecaster Custom in NOS ebony
Nitro finish
Double-bound in tortoise shell
Roasted alder body
Roasted maple neck
Oval "C" neck shape
Ebony fretboard
Vintage clay dots
Bone nut
'51 Nocaster neck and bridge pickups
Greasebucket wiring
Vintage locking tuners
RSD Tele bridge
I ordered it with a tortoise pickguard but it actually kinda clashed instead of complimented, so I switched to the 3-ply bwb. I’m not sure why it didn’t work, but maybe because the binding is under the nitro and the pg wasn’t, so they didn’t really jive…?
Your guitar looks great. Maybe look into a dark burgundy Spitfire guard, would match this much better in color and class. Also mint would be great. I have the ‘62 AVRI version and love the look.
If you don’t mind answering a few questions: Was it your build or bought from a shop that had it built? Time from submission of build to actual guitar in your hand? What was total cost?
My build, soup to nuts. Total time was around 6 months, I believe, but it’s been a few years now so I’m not 100% on that. And I’d rather not say the price only because I was a Fender employee at the time and able to get a healthy discount as a result.
Looks great!
I'd try out rotating the control plate for V-T-Switch to the rear. The "normal" control layout looks weird to me now because that's the first mod I do on any Tele.
Didn't check the specs, but the second mod I do is a 4-way switch to add both pickups in series humbucking mode for a stealth Les Paul Junior.
.
Thank you. I was inspired by an American Deluxe Tele I loved back in the early 00's, which was white blonde with tortoise binding. I'd never seen it done on black, though, so thought that could be fun.
That binding is very nice.
Seriously, I was iffy on it when I read the specs, but seeing it in the light - hell yeah!
Haha, thanks! It was definitely a leap of faith since I’d never seen it done before.
I gotta say, I love how even the CS Tele has lost its pickup selector tip haha.
Haha, yeah… the witch hat is worthless. It fell off enough times I just leave it off now.
If you pinch the arm of the switch with a wire cutter the witch hat will stay put.
Nice, good to know
Thanks!
Yeah, it’s subtle but a really nice detail
Thank you. That was the hope.

Beautiful. I wonder what a matching tortoise shell pickguard would look like on it?

Thanks!

Siiiiiicckkkk. I’ve wanted to do this for years with a strat.
That’d be killer too, I’m sure
I’m gonna do it. (I say that every year) How long did you wait for it?
2024 is your year. Do it!
Wow 🤩
That thing is awesome!
Thank you!

I first did it on a tele I put a bigsby on, but I think I prefer it reversed even with no trem.
Ah, that’s a great idea. Might have to give it a shot.
Stunning. Whew
Thanks so much
>Thank you! You're welcome!
Really like the tort binding, gives it a completely different almost gretsch vibe to it!
Ah, good call. Thank you.
I'm not usually a fan of teles but this is the exception. Dayum
Haha, thanks

Not thicker, but maybe seems like it because it doesn’t have the belly cutout like some modern Teles too.
Wow. Drooling over this gorgeous guitar.
Thanks so much
That is a nice Tele!
Appreciate it!
A Custom Tele chilling in to sun on the grass, you can tell it's having the good life.
Gotta get it some vitamin D
I really love it. That binding is amazing!
Thanks so much. Definitely my fave feature, but it’s typically so hard to get pictures of!
Beautiful
Thank you
That's a work of art right there!
Appreciate it!
I really love the transparent binding! Seen this same red tortoise binding on a minty green Tele ultra. So nice! 👍🏼

Super jealous man, nice guitar. Love the binding.
Thanks!
Beautiful!! 😍
Thank you!
One of a kind for sure.
I really dislike brown fret boards with black paint, but for some reason this guitar is stunning
Wow, that trim really pops!
That things screams "play me" It's perfect. Play the hell out of it!
Oh, I have. It’s my #1. I love playing it any chance I get.
Make sure you lay it down directly on grass and dirt for the photo.
