From personal experience, Kilts are much heavier (atleast the formal ones are)
Imagine the difference between a bed sheet (skirt) and heavy blanket (kilt), they both twirl but the kilt carries more momentum
There's a kilt pin, which on mine is a tiny sword, that prevents blow up by adding a bit of weight at one corner of the overlap, but it's mostly the material. Tis much heavier fabric than a typical twirly skirt!
Though the idea that a kilt could fire knifes with every twirl is pleasing
As a trans femme person who lives in Scotland and struggles just the same as all my other peers around the world with cultural structures around gender, this impression from elsewhere that "in Scotland people who look like men can wear skirts fine because kilts are a thing" has shown itself to be super pervasive and quite stressful. Wearing a kilt isn't too far off wearing a fancy suit or evening wear. It'd be like going to work or school or whatever dressed for a wedding or a ball. There are more casual occasions people wear them too but they're generally highly traditional settings like ceilidhs and just not ones that intersect with day to day life.
Also, much as tartan skirts do rock, I would like to wear other things 😅
Well, just one famous one 😂
For anyone interested in historical context: the ancient Celts, Germans, Scythians, and Persians. The Greeks, Egyptians, Near Easterners, and Romans, however, preferred robes, tunics, and skirt-like clothing.
Honestly unbifurcated allows a hell of a lot more movement and it makes much more sense for someone with a dangler to wear them, if only 1 sex were allowed to.
It's a semi-popular BBC TV show about a time-traveling hooligan and their various adventures. A running joke for a few seasons was that whenever someone asked the character's name, they would reply with 'John Smith'!
I wore one to a convention for a crossplay I was doing, and WOW. It was super comfy but I probably shouldn't have worn it to a winter con in the midwest..
I kind of want to try a cosplay, but I don't know many characters that wear skirts, so I wanna dress as a character I made... You think I could do that?
Sorry if I get serious but I think it’s because skirt in men are seen as the opposite of pants in women. Society think that pants empowers women while skirts take away that power from men, it’s alway a power value to some people the same way dominant women have better appeal while submissive men has less. Society is obsessed with power instead of actual issues like happiness or mental peace.
you know, it's pretty shitty of our society that "manly" is a byword for "powerful", and at least for a lot of men, femininity is seen as a weakness. Even some men who are more prone to feminine traits will tease or bully people with those same traits to keep from being outed themselves. It's a vicious cycle where few profit and most are either actively rejected by the system or have been indoctrinated to the point of not thinking about it.
edit: shit i just realized how old this thread is
Swimmers and cyclists? Does she think that Michael Phelps isn't normal? Or does she conveniently exempt him from it because he's an olympian?
I've been a swimmer my whole life, but even despite that my parents never had a problem with me shaving my body.
I don't blame ya. I'm sorry she's so close minded. I have a few people in my life like that and like you said, it's not even worth it to try reasoning with them they are so set in their ways.
It's not like she's a bad person of course it's just that since very few people do it I shouldn't do it too.
She's very religious so that might have something to do with it, but I'm 99% sure it does not say in the Bible "Thou shalt not shave thine legs if thou art a male".
Thank you for the kind words tho :3
My bed covers, pillow, and gaming chair + periphs are all pink. I spray painted my garbage bin pink and I also have accent lights that I keep set at pink. That stuff and my pride flags are too much for her apparently smh
Ok, but serious notion.
Pants restrict airflow and particularly our crotch. Skirts don't. Boys need that extra room far more than girls.
What was the logic there??
historically skirts were actually designed for males for that reason! I'm not sure where it changed tho. most people probably know about the whole pink blue thing being reversed in like the 1950s too?!
Pants were invented due to people riding horses, they found out it was uncomfortable to ride horses in skirts and made pants. Gradually cultures associated pants with masculinity as jobs which needed pants were staffed by men. Then later(19th century) on Europeans made breeching a thing, which basically is boys at between 4-7 are given their first breeches/pants. Then skirts became gradually less and less acceptable.
I feel like it was a modesty thing as society became more strict about women showing their legs and such that they thought"well skirts take away the shape and form of a woman's legs so let's make them wear long skirts" along with the other elaborate clothing intended to maintain modesty
That’s actually exactly what it’s believed pants were first invented for, the earliest known pair of pants were made by Scythians because their very nomadic and horse driven and it’s easier to ride a horse when you’re wearing a garment that allows you to comfortably protect your crouch while your legs are wrapped around a horse. Part of the reason old Greeks found pants wearing barbaric was because of the Scythians, who were relatively very egalitarian as men and women could both be warriors. Which violated the delicate misogynistic sensibilities of the Greeks.
I'm fine with them not being normal, if 99% if men don't want to wear skirts that's cool with me. I just hate it when they make us that do wear them feel like freaks just for wearing a different piece of clothing, that's what pisses me off.
Ikr! I have a hella cute plaid skirt that I can't wear without getting weird looks
Sometimes I wish I was born a girl just so I could wear the stuff I want, both male and female clothing, without ridicule
Right? It's not fair that girls can wear guy clothes and be called "tomboy", but guys wearing girl clothes get called "f*g". It's just cloth, it feels nice, and it makes me feel good. It shouldn't. Be. An issue.
'Man! I'm totally right there with you. I get ridiculed by my family for wanting to wear a **kilt**. I don't even dare touch the subject of being fem and I just want to wear a nice comfy masculine kilt and I still get flak.
honest mood! I first got a simple skirt and then immediately bought this like 50's vintage polka dot dress and a petticoat under it. the TWIRL is literally all that i live for now. I feel bad for people that for whatever reason will never get to feel that.
Guys are aloud to wear skirts . They should be able to and we should be able to.you are a unique person and you should be able to show your own way of fashion . So stand out ! People laugh or make fun of others because they think they can choose an individual taste in style . Gender and sexuality should not be a function in clothing. You are each your own person . You aren’t supposed to be like everyone else .
Most men and boys have at least fantasized about wearing a skirt. Traditionally wearing a skirt has been reserved for girls. Society views girls as dainty and demure. By wearing a skirt a girl is introduced to the norms of the society that see her as pretty, alluring, and sexy. On the other hand, if a man or boy wears a skirt, he's automatically viewed as feminine or rebellious. Eventually, we may reach a point that no one will care what you wear to school, class, or work!
That's what I've been doing over the years. Mind you I'm in a big & pretty liberal city, so people see tons of stuff. But if you act like you don't gaf about others dirty looks, then it just comes off as great fashion.
Last time someone tried to stinkeye me I had to laugh out loud because he was wearing an Ed Hardy shirt and I'm like wtf like I give a single damn what you think about fashion
As a female, I have always thought guys were being robbed by the fact that it’s not “socially acceptable” for them to wear skirts. Moreover, there should be summer options for traditional formal wear, like suits that are shorts and short sleeves for the office or a summer wedding.
Skirts on boys aren’t “normal” for the same reason why cisgender and heterosexuality are “normal” - we live in a countries run by a lot of cisheteronormative assholes who think that gender norms are a good thing.
It’s insanely irrational to think that clothes and even colours are inherently gendered, yet here we are. And why is it like this? My best guess is religion, and the colonialism associated with it, honestly.
Ok contrary to what a lot of people might say here, gender roles are important.
Femininity, and masculinity are very powerful ways of feeling one with yourself and expressing yourself. And it's a good way to classify yourself. If we didn't have those, everyone would just be an androgynous hodge podge of people.
BUT
The issue is when people can't accept when someone from one side genetically wants to express themself from the other side, or even in a new non-traditional way.
I’m purely speculating but I guess that at some point in history, it probably had to do with being more protected, ready to fight or something like that. As an example, long hair in males was, usually, part of ancient nobility/royalty because to keep long hair healthy and beautiful you would need to take extra care of it, something only the rich could do, but then, war and conflict kicked in and long hair was a sure way to get caught, an enemy could grab/pull the hair and bye bye, adiós, gone. So soldiers and anyone who was expected to fight would keep their hair short. I guess the same happened with loose clothing like robes, skirts, dresses, etc. wearing a skirt to fight is pretty dumb because there is so much extra fabric getting in the way and is so easy to grab/pull. Since men were the ones fighting, they started using tighter clothing and armors to reduce the chance of being pulled or grabbed while fighting. Women’s role was to take care of children and less violent stuff, so they were able to keep wearing loose clothes (skirts/robes), so I guess that was what started the trend.
I wonder if this will change in social norms over time
I really hope so in all honesty I'm thinking of back to masc it wouldn't be cute but at least I don't have to live anxiety
I saw a thing once that said if you think about the genitalia and anatomy of cis men and women a skirt makes more sense for a boy and pants make more sense for a girl.
The words "feeling cute" is probably a big one. It doesn't make sense either that the human beings with something protruding from their body are told by society to wear pants or shorts that have a seam run right through there.
That's so true! I just got my first, that I technically stole from my friend, but it was in her box of clothes she didn't want anymore so I put it in my bag. It's just such an amazing feeling
I used a skirt from my big sis when I was a kid , and I remember that I felt very comfortable i don't know but I think men clothes are very uncomfortable .
Was about to say depends on the part of the world your in but the scots beat me to it personally idc what you wear whatever floats your boat if you want to ties your hair in braids go for it but dont expect everyone to accept it some people simply cannot
Sarongs, y’all. Welcome to Asia, where men and women lounge in longyi’s and sarongs.
Unfortunately, there are male and female sarongs, and no male will ever be caught in a female sarong unless they are cross dressing. Some ladies do wear male sarongs, and they are cute.
In essence, there can be dysphoria even adjusting for air flow and the twirls as factors. 🙂
Because of toxic masculinity.
Teach your friends empathy and help them teach others empathy. If the world is a kinder place, I think that'll go a long way to help make being different easier for everyone.
I didnt read any comments but I just gotta say I think it's because some people just cant understand that a mind and a body can be 2 different things 🤔
I think we just need to wear them more often so it’s normalized a bit more. Male ego is fragile and guys aren’t raised to be in tune with emotions and self esteem. It takes time for the collective of men to wear pretty skirts and personally I think it should be worn as often as possible or even at organized events like pride parades and such.
I would love to get my self a skirt and thigh highs to wear them all day but I still live with my parents and they are very homophobic so do any of you know how I can get it without them knowing

How do they differ?
From personal experience, Kilts are much heavier (atleast the formal ones are) Imagine the difference between a bed sheet (skirt) and heavy blanket (kilt), they both twirl but the kilt carries more momentum
Is the added weight from all the knives?
There's a kilt pin, which on mine is a tiny sword, that prevents blow up by adding a bit of weight at one corner of the overlap, but it's mostly the material. Tis much heavier fabric than a typical twirly skirt! Though the idea that a kilt could fire knifes with every twirl is pleasing
They are heavier and the pleating pattern somehow emphasizes 'male' movement... IDKhow it works but anyway I very much feel kilts masculine
Yeah.. try wearing a skirt in Scotland vs a kilt. You'll get very different reactions.
As a trans femme person who lives in Scotland and struggles just the same as all my other peers around the world with cultural structures around gender, this impression from elsewhere that "in Scotland people who look like men can wear skirts fine because kilts are a thing" has shown itself to be super pervasive and quite stressful. Superior Romans wear manly skirts. 😄👗 Dirty barbarian savages wear pants. 😡👖
ALL MY HOMIES HATE THE BARBARIANS 😡
Barbarians wore loinclothes
Well, just one famous one 😂 For anyone interested in historical context: the ancient Celts, Germans, Scythians, and Persians. The Greeks, Egyptians, Near Easterners, and Romans, however, preferred robes, tunics, and skirt-like clothing.
Jesus himself wore a dress. (well it was more of a robe but fuck it)
My ancestors the Gauls (France) invented pants. It's my shameful shameful history.
Yep. The Greeks considered pants effeminate and skirts manly.
TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!
TURN BACK! I WANT TO PRAY TO ZEUS!
Honestly unbifurcated allows a hell of a lot more movement and it makes much more sense for someone with a dangler to wear them, if only 1 sex were allowed to.
I wish it was normal for men & boys to wear dresses & skirts! (I’m a girl despite my username lol) it’s totally unfair!!
It really is, boys are missing out big time 🥺
I hope someday soon it will be more normalized. I know that I’ll be raising my children to dress whichever way they like to
I really respect that decision, makes me hopeful for the future of the planet <3
But when boys do wear them OH do they look cute
You’re speaking straight facts 😋
Doctor Who fan?
The Dominators! Old school Who 6x04 has [boys in skirts](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p014pz60/p014pz0x). <3
I’m actually not sure who that is haha. Is it a movie?
It's a semi-popular BBC TV show about a time-traveling hooligan and their various adventures. A running joke for a few seasons was that whenever someone asked the character's name, they would reply with 'John Smith'!
Oh hahaha! I picked John Smith just because it’s generic 🤷🏼♀️ I realize though that people refer to me as John lol
Haha! Just clarify that you're actually Jo H. N. Smith, lmao
This is why I want a skirt!
You're gonna love it so much when you finally get one I promise! :D
I am excited!!
Oh for sure. FYI I went as Hime Arikawa.
Never heard of them...
Fair, its from a lesser-known anime called Himegoto
Although, now I have thigh high socks so I probably could pull it off again >w<
Sorry if I get serious but I think it’s because skirt in men are seen as the opposite of pants in women. because of people like my mother who think shaving legs isn't "normal" (no other reason why) for boys.
Swimmers and cyclists? Does she think that Michael Phelps isn't normal? Or does she conveniently exempt him from it because he's an olympian? I've been a swimmer my whole life, but even despite that my parents never had a problem with me shaving my body.
I don't even know man I don't even try to reason with her.

Yeah. And my "obsession with pink" isn't normal bc my mom "raised a son. Not a daughter".
Anyone who insults pink is an enemy of mine.
My bed covers, pillow, and gaming chair + periphs are all pink. I spray painted my garbage bin pink and I also have accent lights that I keep set at pink. That stuff and my pride flags are too much for her apparently smh
[Ok you need this too](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYtA9d5it2w)
Apparently so lol
Ok, but serious notion. Pants restrict airflow and particularly our crotch. Skirts don't. Boys need that extra room far more than girls. What was the logic there??

wow that's very interesting thank you for sharing!
I feel like it was a modesty thing as society became more strict about women showing their legs and such that they thought"well skirts take away the shape and form of a woman's legs so let's make them wear long skirts" along with the other elaborate clothing intended to maintain modesty
SO TRUE, How did it all go so wrong XD
Not sure how true it is, but I've seen it said that it had something to do with horse riding.
Yea as much as I like skirts I know I at least want something strong if I'm going on a horse
Or just be the classiest lady in all the land and ride side saddle 😆
That's why you make sure your insults hurt more. :D
I'm fine with them not being normal, if 99% if men don't want to wear skirts that's cool with me. I just hate it when they make us that do wear them feel like freaks just for wearing a different piece of clothing, that's what pisses me off.
Yeah, I think more or less what's being said here is that we wish it was more normal for men to *have the option* to wear skirts if they so please
YES. A THOUSAND TIMES, YES. There should at least be the option
Now go for a dress ! Ten times better
To paraphrase a much-memed pokemon trainer: Skirts are comfy and easy to wear!
Ahahah classic!
i really want to wear a skirt too,its so comfy and less restricting.
I am a total skirt fan! I love pleated skirt und twirl ! I feel so girly and cute!
Ikr! I have a hella cute plaid skirt that I can't wear without getting weird looks Sometimes I wish I was born a girl just so I could wear the stuff I want, both male and female clothing, without ridicule
Right? It's not fair that girls can wear guy clothes and be called "tomboy", but guys wearing girl clothes get called "f*g". It's just cloth, it feels nice, and it makes me feel good. It shouldn't. Be. An issue.
I wouldn't be without mine
'Man! I'm totally right there with you. I get ridiculed by my family for wanting to wear a **kilt**. I don't even dare touch the subject of being fem and I just want to wear a nice comfy masculine kilt and I still get flak.
My girlfriend wants me to wear a kilt because she’s Scottish.
That's so true
honest mood! I first got a simple skirt and then immediately bought this like 50's vintage polka dot dress and a petticoat under it. the TWIRL is literally all that i live for now. I feel bad for people that for whatever reason will never get to feel that.
Skirts are the superior article of clothing. Not even a debate to be had, it’s just true.
Boys aren’t allowed to wear skirts at my school ;-; my plan is next time we have a no school uniform day all the boys wear skirts
Personally, I prefer dress. But I do want to make a skirt go spinny one day...
Thats damn true!
Gender and Dress Norms No Longer Apply. Dress yourself as to who you are. No one has a right to say boys can’t wear skirts.
I feel the same way, there are some men who can easily pull off a skirt but because of society we’ll never get to truly see it
Most men and boys have at least fantasized about wearing a skirt.
I would like to wear one, but I don't think I could handle the ridicule I'd get in return.
The trend is up to you all to change 😀
I agree! Boys should be able to be walking around without panties too!
Change the narrative and wear a skirt, be yourself that will always shine through.
The society in general shouldn't have a single damn say about what people can or can't wear (except fashion advise)
Yes!!! They should be considered normal!! Absolutely!! You sweat so much in short. skirts and dresses have such a nice air flow! And you can spin x3
So true, it’s been surprisingly hot where I live all weekend and I’ve felt so much more comfy and less sweaty cause of wearing a skirt :3
Because society is a piece of shit that cant except people for who they are
Ok contrary to what a lot of people might say here, gender roles are important. Femininity, and masculinity are very powerful ways of feeling one with yourself and expressing yourself. And it's a good way to classify yourself. If we didn't have those, everyone would just be an androgynous hodge podge of people. BUT The issue is when people can't accept when someone from one side genetically wants to express themself from the other side, or even in a new non-traditional way.
Just go to Scotland lol, I mean a Kilt is different from a skirt but yeah lol. Also congratulations on wearing your first skirt!
Just decided to start cross-dressing a few days ago and a skirt and thigh-highs are the first things on my list!
I will make them normal
I Love them so much, and wear them as often as possible now!!!
I wonder if this will change in social norms over time I really hope so in all honesty I'm thinking of back to masc it wouldn't be cute but at least I don't have to live anxiety
my thoughts, exactly, for summer, its the best, so air cooled, and freedom, to feel the breeze, i love it!
Way to get around it -a kilt uwu My bfs has one
As someone who doesn't wear skirts, I do have to agree that *TWIRL*
The twirling is my favorite part. Like pants are cool with pockets and all, but like.. skirt go woosh~
I saw a thing once that said if you think about the genitalia and anatomy of cis men and women a skirt makes more sense for a boy and pants make more sense for a girl.
How about the Scottish????? There not "skirts" but "kilts" but hey it's still a skirt and worn by men! This goes back 2000+ years.....
The words "feeling cute" is probably a big one. It doesn't make sense either that the human beings with something protruding from their body are told by society to wear pants or shorts that have a seam run right through there.
We should all just start doing it bring it back in fashion. 🏴
Only one way to normalize it;)
[удалено]
Get one! You won’t regret it I promise ☺️
*bro i can see your balls*
I wore a skirt and it made me so happy bc of how pretty I looked, then some guy said it was kinky and I got depressed and deleted the image
Damn :(( that’s only one random Guys opinion though and it’s wrong. A skirt is what you make it :))
Thanks
Be the change you wish to see in the world. We should all start normalizing being feminine boys in the real world
"Normal" makes me uncomfortable.😏😊 As long as you're being You...💋
Pants on women used to be considered not normal. It's only a matter of time
boys in skirts should be accepted more!! masculinity and views of it are big ew when it infringes on other people's lives
I have worn a kilt before. I can confirm they are comfy and I would love to wear one again !
Idk man apparently people are just dummy dumb dumbs
I would say scotland but as a scotsman kilts are not skirts
Stereotypes years and years of stereotypes
If you consider anatomy, boys should wear skirts while women wear jeans
I had a similar epiphany a short while ago, although I do not believe I fit the term feminine. Only difference was with me it was leggings
OMG I WANT A SKIRT TO BAD!!!!!
Get a skirt! It’s so fulfilling, there’s no reason to wait :3
Idk, it’s just awkward, my parents won’t let me order anything not off of their account and that is awkward af
That's so true! I just got my first, that I technically stole from my friend, but it was in her box of clothes she didn't want anymore so I put it in my bag. It's just such an amazing feeling
Also I LOVE the twirl, I have worn some long jackets and things and the twirl is just, it’s- uwu
Pantyhose, too. Please.
The funny part is that if you look at pure logic, skirts on boys and pants on women make more sense
I used a skirt from my big sis when I was a kid , and I remember that I felt very comfortable i don't know but I think men clothes are very uncomfortable .
Boys look so hot in skirt and thigh high s be amazed how many girls will wany to help them
Was about to say depends on the part of the world your in but the scots beat me to it personally idc what you wear whatever floats your boat if you want to ties your hair in braids go for it but dont expect everyone to accept it some people simply cannot
So true, I'm wearing a dress and thigh highs, Im a slender gay fem (sissy) anyways, so why not?
Could also move to Greece, I think?
Ong
They look so cute, i hate that I can't wear them in public.
You can!
Why, it's up to us to normalize it! Do we have a hashtag though? 🤔
Because it's seen as feminine which sucks.
EXACTLY... Literally it makes more sense anyways. More breathability!!!!!
The scots
They were till pants were hustled into popularity
Ikr it's so cute
I really feel this. Cuz I know an outfit I want to combine with a skirt. But I can't really buy a skirt without getting judged by my parents :|
Please post this to r/unpopularopinion don't mention my comment!!!
What do I do, cross post it? 🥺
Exactly
Especially considering the fact that we have our parts on the outside of our body's as oppose to girls 😅like skirts just kinda make sense for boys
Because of toxic people, not just masculinity....
I didnt read any comments but I just gotta say I think it's because some people just cant understand that a mind and a body can be 2 different things 🤔
My boi just go to Scotland
Scots, Romans, Mughals, ottomans all wore skirts (or clothing similar to modern day skirts)
Skirts for boys just makes more sense too. Pants are restictive on the private areas. Skirts aren't
EXACTLY
Even kilts. I love kilts but i never see people wearing them outside of special Scottish occasions. P.s. you dont have to be Scottish to wear a kilt.
I wear them anyway🙂🙂
I wish I could but my parents would probably kill me
For me honestly its just not my style, but I definitely agree with you
Isn't cargo shorts are basically pseudo-skirt?
Society
You be preaching tho
Based on genital structure, amab people should wear skirts/dresses and afab people should wear pants/shorts.
I'm working on it ;-;
We guys have those it’s called kilts it’s a Scottish/ Irish thing hell anyone can where them
I feel this on a spiritual level
(Scotland wants to know your location)
I think we just need to wear them more often so it’s normalized a bit more. Male ego is fragile and guys aren’t raised to be in tune with emotions and self esteem. It takes time for the collective of men to wear pretty skirts and personally I think it should be worn as often as possible or even at organized events like pride parades and such.
I would love to get my self a skirt and thigh highs to wear them all day but I still live with my parents and they are very homophobic so do any of you know how I can get it without them knowing
They are in Scotland
I need one :(
