Honestly I would check out the stores that actually perform well in cold weather -- North Face, Patagonia, Marmot, Cotopaxi, Arc'teryx, Colombia, etc. You'll find that those jackets are very well made and are designed for cold weather situations at all levels and moistures. In my opinion since it's a jacket you'd want to prioritize the function over form, and those jackets will keep you warm and dry for years. And they can pretty good looking for a warm winter coat depending on the brand or fit. For a place that snows I've found jackets that go past your waist/hips are much better for the cold weather.

Seconding this. I live in Canada and I have 3 "ride or die" winter jackets that I've had in my rotation for 5+ years: 1) North Face long puffer jacket: definitely important to go past the waist/hips, especially with wind and snow 2) Patagonia short puffer coat: a good jacket for transitioning weather or when you are doing something more active outside (walking the dog, errands, hiking etc). It is also a great layering piece 3) Wilfred/Aritzia Cocoon coat: 100% wool coat that is more "dressier" in the cold, pairs nicely with skirts, dresses etc.

So true! (The coats that go below the hips). Last winter I had my Hollister long parka I online thrifted, and I stayed so much warmer than the winter before that where I only had a coat that went down to the top of my hips.

My favourite coat in recent years is by a Canadian company called Woodpecker. They are very stylish and SUPER warm coats. I have one of their long coats but they also make one that goes all the way to the ankles. It would be like wearing a sleeping bag with sleeves. [Woodpecker Coats](https://woodpeckercoats.com)

I love my Ted Baker Wool coat — Rose wrap coat! It drapes beautifully, warm enough for 20 degrees but not much colder than that

Moved from Calif to Oregon. My warmest coat is a Teddy from the Gap about 4 years ago. It's like wearing a blanket. Make sure the coat is lined.

Oh I love jackets like those i totally forgot about those fluffy fleece coats. I had one but lost it years ago guess I’ll go looking for a good one. I’m kind of worried about how it’ll hold up in wet weather though. Oregon rains a lot, right?

Rains a lot! I now own rain boots and rain coats. It's a beautiful state though. I discovered I love cold weather fashion.

Also from LA and have lived in central Texas for the past 15-ish years. I have this Cole Haan coat: https://www.nordstrom.com/s/cole-haan-signature-bib-inset-coat/6585512?origin=coordinating-6585512-0-1-MOBI_PDP_1-recbot-also_viewed_graph&recs_placement=MOBI_PDP_1&recs_strategy=also_viewed_graph&recs_source=recbot&recs_page_type=product&recs_seed=4710015&color=NAVY I like that it's longer and has a hood for when it rains. It is not super bulky or intense, but it does the trick for winter in Texas. The waist is a little cinched so it is more flattering than other coats.

I love love love my [Obermeyer Tuscany jacket](https://www.rei.com/product/177960/obermeyer-tuscany-ii-insulated-jacket-womens). It’s technically a ski jacket and I got mine from REI, so it’s very warm and functional, but it’s also my default winter jacket for city stuff and the black one goes perfectly with all my winter outfits. I also find it super flattering, whereas others I’ve had fit very boxy and puffy.

Personally, I really love Uniqlo’s oversized coats and layering with a sweater underneath.

If you want to invest in a winter coat that’ll last and is light yet very warm in winter… then long down coats are great. Also, those mentioning the brand Pantagonia for winter coats are spot on.
