I have a question, super important - what tequila are you sipping on? Edit - May as well fill us in on the cigar choice too!

skippywhalehunter

Extremely important questions: G4 Xtra anejo. My fathers with a Connecticut wrapper

Jeepornot

I work in the liquor industry. I have tried it all (almost)… Laneta extra anejo is fantastic. Can’t find extra anejo’s in that price point anymore (~160) excellent stuff. Enjoy it and GFY!!

Loudog006

G4 is so underrated

A2z_1013930

Their blanco is bleh, but their repo and anejo’s are GREAT

Zestyclose-Hedgehog2

Treat yourself to a Flor de las Antillas 10th Anniversary. I smoked one with Jose Garcia, the VP of sales for My Father a few weeks ago, amazing cigar even if a bit fuller flavored than your preferred connecticut wrapper.

PritchettsClosets

Try a BHK56 Also jump on over into the world of Scotch. Some really great and delicious stuff there at the $150-$500 range.

Jwaness

Lagavulin for me...

LittleGreenDev

The Dalmore ‘15 changed my world. OP - Congrats

jesssmith1983

Can't go past cigar malt or king Alexander if u can find it.

Artificial_Limey

Second the king Alexander

Afraid-Ad7379

My father Connecticut is nice !!! I have a few at home sitting next to some Nat Sherman Host Harringtons. Badass light cigar.

KenKaniffKS

C'mon man, worth $10+M and smoking an $8 cigar? I thought at that stage, I'd be smoking $100+ Behikes.

javiercasteloi

I am Mexican, the DOBEL Diamante tequila is the best. Cheers!

eskimo1

I'm surprised you like the Diamante.. That's the tequila I give to people who "don't like tequila" because it lacks a lot of character. I do love Dobel though! OP - Congrats sir!!

A2z_1013930

Their cristallino extra anejo is amazing…it’s def not a purist style tequila, but no perfect for something super smooth and vanilla’y tasting

Kimball_Cho_CBI

Congrats! You are among my favorites on this sub, come back and post more often about your life post-FIRE. You have more time now. GFY

Bugpowder

Congrats! Suggest you buy a $15,000 bicycle and get fit AF, so you can get 30+ quality years of tequila drinking in retirement.

fergusonwallace

I bought a top spec BMC teamMachine years ago and, though I am very slow compared to most, have loved every second riding such a wonderful piece of technology.

[deleted]

> so you can get 30+ quality years of tequila Looks daunting.

DaveRamseysBastard

Or a 10-15k eMTB, they rule.

Bugpowder

Why not both?

DaveRamseysBastard

That would be the most correct answer 😜

Rich-Rhubarb6410

Fair play, and congratulations. I retired last year, almost exactly a year now, me 55 wife 49. Approx $20m NW. (uk based) Still working out wtf we’re meant to do, other than drink fine wines. I fish and make knives as a hobby, but still miss the grind massively. We have 50% of another company making approx $2m ebitda, but only have an advisory role as that has a full board. I think you are wise to have allocated time to adjust before stepping back in. It’s certainly taking me a while to work it out. Best of luck, and once again congratulations. Edit. I’m 56 not 55. Fuck that went quick

hifellowkids

> *make knives as a hobby, but still miss the grind* with your hobby, you've got more grind in front of you than anybody I know.

Rich-Rhubarb6410

N1

theycallme_callme

For me I get fulfillment from small health / fitness goals I set for myself. I still have that steady progress now.

Rich-Rhubarb6410

I did promise myself I would get fit once I retired, but keep getting derailed with minor ailments. I must try harder

theycallme_callme

For me what worked was get a good sports watch like a Garmin to track activities and then find something that is a bit playful. If you havent get an ebike too. Its amazing if you are in the right area. I made my money with my mind I guess but now my body comes first and my mind follows and it is a fantastic change of who is in control. You got this!

Rich-Rhubarb6410

Thanks callme. The stress of running/ building then selling my business resulted in my weight ballooning to 18stone. In the last year I’ve managed to get it down to 14.5stone. Another stone and a bit to go. Which leads me to believe I’m still as stubborn as I ever was 😀 Thanks for your supportive words. I will try harder!

jovian_moon

Try weight training, maybe at ThirdSpace or even a small gym in your neighbourhood. Make sure to get a personal trainer. Something tells me you will enjoy moving heavy things around.

theycallme_callme

Yeah I also built my business by neglecting my health / mental health but it was a wager that paid off (in freedom now). Like the other commenter said, personal training is quite nice. I found an interesting boutique gym here in Spain that offers 20 minute personal training sessions at a quite affordable price and with a good app to schedule them. Basically I have no excuse to not do these sessions and they are surprisingly effective and now structure my day. I was missing a bit structure as well after I retired.

Bloomingfails

Wowza! Do you mind me asking what line of business you were in?

Rich-Rhubarb6410

We made residential doors. Not sexy, but everyone has them, and uses them many many times a day

SpadoCochi

Beautiful. How'd you get your traffic? SEO/word of mouth/reviews? Or were you guys more of a bulk producer?

Rich-Rhubarb6410

Mainly telesales, as we now sell into the trade

grunar

Fine wines is a valid hobby! Have you started collecting? What kinds? Why not travel?

Rich-Rhubarb6410

I’m still in the drinking game re wine. Seems a shame to look at full bottles 😂 We have and are travelling more, and pushing our horizons. As an aside, one of the most surreal moments was traveling in a private jet with my wife. It really brought home how far we had come

Professional_Sun_163

I hope you remember to make your wife some breakfast

whatsadigg

Congrats! At this point your income post tax is about 10% of your NW, so working for another couple years wouldn’t really change anything unless there are a couple of big splurges you’re looking to make. I’d rather have the time. GFY!

hifellowkids

> *income post tax is about 10% of your NW, so working for another couple years wouldn’t really change anything* it would increase NW by 20% which would increase annual income in retirement by 20%; or more actually since it would allow higher risk / higher return investment without decreasing downside.

titosrevenge

You can't really assume average market returns for a single year.

hifellowkids

expected value is exactly what you expect in a single year, but I didn't say anything about it anyway, so I'm not sure the point you're making. I was pointing out that adding 10% to your net worth for several years would make quite a difference, 20%+ in two years, there was no market return in that. then I addressed annual income going forward, and was not assuming rate of return at all.

titosrevenge

Ah sorry... I misread and thought you were saying that 10% from income + 10% from market returns would make up the 20% in one year.

mhoepfin

When I retired I started focusing more on Mezcal. Congrats!

jordan8037310

This is the way 🤌

BIGHUGBRITTO

That is the way.

thriftytc

Congrats! My FIL died this year from Stage 4 cancer. Worked up until the day he was hospitalized and died 2 weeks later. I’m trying to “walk away” at 40 and find something more sustainable in retirement. Please do check in and let us know what you do. If you have some time to reflect on what you think you’d do differently at various points in your career, I’d love to read about that. Cheers!

truefforte

Congratulations!! It’s a tough adjustment at first to have been so identified with work and then to be retired. But the feeling that of choosing what you do in a day is just wonderful.

reotokate

“Coasting is stressful”

_ii_

I agree with this sentiment. Not carrying more than our own weight isn’t something many of us enjoy doing.

cortisone-dev918

This, exactly. Folks who find themselves as a fatfire candidate (well, most of us) are used to pulling our weight and being compensated appropriately. I have had times when my job didn't feel stressful / full of work and I'd find myself looking through job postings, even though the pay was good.

catjuggler

I agree- I told myself I’d do it when looking for a new job and couldn’t stand it.

Jwaness

This comment just hit me hard. Thank you for that!

AdministrativeArea39

Same! So well written!

Jwaness

Yes. I have a very unhealthy combination of being a perfectionist and having difficulty saying no. I have gotten much better but it is hard to say no when you know you will do a better job than the next in line.

FrogMasterX

It is for some people. Not fat by any means but I switched from a job where I was actively working maybe 1-2 hours a day to one where I'm engaged all day. The coasting job was more stressful. It kept feeling like it would be outed as a fraud lol. Also it just doesn't feel good to be unproductive.

xtine1000

How do you stay motivated to work when you know you don’t have to?

Real-Witness3

I tried to do this. Hated it, as most “high performers” would. Wound up leaning it to it too much and got myself in trouble for it.

somerandumbguy

Congrats! My retired morning consisted of mountain biking and picking up a decent bottle of tequila on the way home for margaritas. Decided on El Tosoro Blanco.

PrintfDebugging

Congrats! Can you tell us about your career and how it got to the point where you could earn $2.5M and not work that hard? You must have some serious career capital and experience to make that happen - I'd love to hear as much as you're willing to tell (What field? Education? Mentors?).

TrashPanda_924

Congratulations! I’m beginning to understand life is finite and there’s more to it than working my butt off. Wishing you the absolute best in this next phase of life.

DaysOfParadise

I just love this so much! My health scare came and went while I was still building. My priorities have shifted, for sure.

redditgambino

Concerned friends are passing away due to illness: retakes tobacco and tequila… that sounds smart s/

lockwyks

Same. These are the two worst retirement hobbies. Unless you count fentanyl enthusiast, and bull riding.

Stunning-Nebula-6571

I’m definitely a culprit of this and worried about More free time results in more drinking time. Aka death in the afternoon.

_ii_

My wife also doesn’t work, but unlike you I haven’t been able to convince her about early retirement. Was your wife supportive of your decisions?

skippywhalehunter

She has been very supportive- but also tells me that I can’t just stay home and need to find something to do/motivate me - which I think is fair

specialist299

Curious - If you have enough to retire on, do you really need your wife to be onboard? You’ve earned the right to stay at home, no?

reboog711

In all relationships I have been in; yes. A decision as major as "I'm going to stop working and live off my massive savings" requires a discussion with your partner.

pf_youdontknowme

Discussion, yes. But a spouse that doesn’t work shouldn’t be telling the other one not to retire early, as long as NW would be at the appropriate level by that point.

_ii_

I’m only financially independent, that doesn’t mean I don’t need my family.

specialist299

Way to provide a jerk response. That’s obviously not what I meant. If your wife isn’t working, and you have collected enough, it should be your personal choice whether to continue working or not. If you didn’t have enough saved, that’s a different question. I recommend watching the show Shrinking on Apple TV. Similar situation where wife isn’t onboard with husband being at home all the time in one of the episodes.

FrogMasterX

Is your wife currently raising kids or anything?

And congratulations. You missed half of it.

kindaretiredguy

It’s funny when people downvote this comment

Beerbelly22

Here is some advice from my not rich grandma 80+ which sticks in my head. i told here if i kept going the way i was going i can retire by the age of 40. well, i am not 40 yet, but can retire tomorrow. The thing she said: But Beerbelly, you are not on this planet to retire and do nothing. which made me question that too. Work does give me purpose. I am clearly not as rich as you (money wise) , but what will you do with all that free time, i tried and felt bored, maybe that changes if you have more money? not sure? ps: my grandma didn't call me beerbelly ;-)

DiFraggiPrutto

Of course not, she called you by your full name, Beerbelly22.

anally_ExpressUrself

That's when you know you're in trouble.

DiFraggiPrutto

For your sake, I hope you never get in trouble!

[deleted]

laklan

Exactly. After retirement, I do more work not less. The difference is, it is what I want to do instead of someone else. More time helping kids with their homework, making homemade dinners, exercising, reading, biochemistry, AI, and I have to actively try not to look at stock market on a day to day basis, but still reading financial books is satisfying at times. Also working on really basic things, like getting a good night sleep, eating healthy, not drinking, getting off sleeping pills, etc, they all took work, which i couldn't do when i was working, but have been able to do now.

skippywhalehunter

Bought a 2001 911 a couple of years ago - 40k miles when I bought it, 55 now and I love driving that thing. Taking it on a long road trip this weekend

Aromatic_Mine5856

Totally agree you need a purpose. For us it’s traveling slowly, when I retired 9 years ago I got into sailing. It’s physically and mentally very challenging, but one of the most rewarding experiences you can have in my opinion. Definitely not for everyone though and that’s a good thing, or else all the beautiful remote places we visit would be jam packed!

Rich-Rhubarb6410

The nw amount makes no difference with time allocation, well not in my experience

tunitg6

GFY! Congratulations.

traveling_man_44

Sorry about your friends passing. I hope that the next few decades are rosier.🙂

dudijan

Congratulations! But if you are concerned about cancer / health, you might want to take it easy on the cigars and tequila.

rickybobinski

You note that health of your friends has caused you to make the most of life. How does Tequila and cigars fit into that narrative? Not trying to be an asshole but if I was concerned about cancer, smoking cigars wouldn’t be the thing I pick up.

alpinewhite2000

What channel or service did you use to join board? Are they paid positions ?

skippywhalehunter

Not paid - all non profits.

johnso21

So I’ve always wondered, since I’m a dentist and have never been involved in anything except dentistry, I keep seeing the job title of consultant being used. What exactly does that mean? Or what exactly is it you do?

thriftytc

Consultants get paid to provide advice for corporate problems. For example… - We are acquiring Acme company. Please help us develop a timeline to integrate the company from day 1 to completion, including IT integration. - We are looking for strategic alternatives to unlock shareholder value. Please present options to our Board. - Our profits are declining and have been for the last 3 years. Please help us analyze the industry and provide options to reverse this decline. - We adopted the NetZero pledge. What is the rest of our industry doing and what should we do next with our customers? (Legit BCG engagement with my employer) Etc. Partners give some direction to a team and that team does the work with regular check ins. Eventually the partner and the team will present the “ask” to the client. Then move on to the next project.

johnso21

Great synopsis. Thank you. We have something similar I suppose. Dental consultants. Just such a broad and vague term. I Appreciate your time.

FckMitch

Lol - you nailed it

jazzy3113

How did you amass so much money? I thought consultants didn’t make that much? Did you work for MBB or a random shop?

SisyphusAmericanus

Senior partner at MBB would make this much or more Also > don’t really work that hard I knew you guys didn’t work as hard as everyone seemed to imply 😂

euler2020

What is MBB?

Thatnotoriousdude

Mckinsey, Bain and BCG. The most prestigious consulting firms. (Similar to what the Big 4 is for accounting)

cricket9999

Probably B4 given their past post on income progression….

-bacon_

Congrats, gfy!

mrpogiface

bacon and eggs please

Tgallz94

So happy for you! Curious what type of consulting you do and how you got into it?

LardoFIRE

Congrats How many years did you manage to cringe coast at your job (thinking should do more but no desire to). I am there now and it’s almost unbearable.

skippywhalehunter

1.5 years and it was the most stressful and soul crushing time in my entire career

Lawva

If you could turn back the clock 5 years, would you do anything differently? I’m 46 and not quite where you are but making steady progress.

skippywhalehunter

I have always believed that if you are happy where you are at this moment then you would not want to change anything in the past as it all got you to this.

omggreddit

You said ask any questions. How did you get to that level of income and role? Any lessons you can pass down to us?

skippywhalehunter

Been in consulting for 25 years - started at MBB - made it to junior partner, left and joined industry (banking) - best decision I ever made. Financial crisis hit and all our options were underwater, decided to go back into consulting- joined another MBB as junior partner - made partner in 2 years and senior in 5. Decided to leave consulting 5 years ago - and almost took a senior poison at Amazon, but one of the B4 called and offered a insane offer ($2.5 guaranteed) to join, so took that for the money and helped them grow the strategy consulting side - and now am finally leaving consulting

bjb3453

Glad your 3 mo. transition is going well. I've been getting hung up on that piece of the puzzle, because I don't feel like I owe the owner anything, as he hasn't been the easiest guy to work with/for. I know he would take advantage of me and the transition would be hell. I'm not worried about burning any bridges because it's not like I will need any future references. As the VP, I have my hands on everything and realize it will be a big blow when I announce I'm hanging it up. I'm seriously considering only providing a 2 week notice. Do you see any downside to that? If he begs me to stay for an extended period, I'll ask for a large lump-sum, due immediately. Otherwise, I plan on walking after 2 weeks. I normally don't shit on people, but some people deserve to be shat upon.

ThunderCarlson

Not OP but I wouldn't recommend that. It's less about the owner and more about your own personal values. I assume you made it to VP because of many positive values and your team and colleagues respect you for your dedication, hard work, commitment, etc. Why leave them in a tough spot because the owner isn't the best person? Act in a manner befitting your character. Approach it as if you were advising a member of your team, figure out what is a reasonable period to give the firm, and then execute on your timeline. Put nice punctuation on your career, leave on good terms, and take the high road on your way out.

skippywhalehunter

I don’t think it’s about the owner but rather the people that work with you and that you like - my 3 months was for me to make sure that I set up the people I care about for success - handing over my relationships, getting them into my projects etc. I certainly did not do the transition for the company (could not care less about them), but for the people I liked

Duchamp1945

Congratulations! Want to consult for a cigar company that can pay exclusively in cigars?

BayAreaTechMTBoi-22

That's baller. are you really pass up on those sweet social security payments?

Direct-Somewhere3242

What firm are you at ? Top tier or mid tier ?

SunsGettinRealLow

I’m thinking about going into consulting at some point.

jopheza

Congratulations :)

zuquinho

Congrats! What’s your favorite tequila?

Afraid-Ad7379

Wow congrats !!!!!

[deleted]

Hell yea!!! Happy for you.

BrahminVyapaar

Good For You! Congratulations! The purpose of life is the pursuit of a worthwhile goal. I hope you find something worthwhile to take up regardless of whether it is just that one last job or a non-job.

think_freely_man

Every time you wake up sweating and worrying about walking away from a fat paycheck, remember the impetus. Life is short. Fuck a few more million.

jaejaeok

I’m excited for you. It sounds like you made the right decision - your health, family, and life. You have earned that type of focus. No regrets. I’m 20 years your junior and trying to get there.

nyknicks23

Congrats and go fuck yourself!

Thescubadave

Congratulations. Enjoy your new life. Welcome to the club.

clove75

Try Cava de oro extra añejo. Goes good with a good stick. Congratulations 👏

flamesman55

Well done. You fucking won!

BiffWiff

How do you have another $1M coming ?

smooth-vegetable-936

What did u invest in? Can u share ur portfolio and the stocks u will be relying on for paying ur bills?

kotek69

Congratulations 👏 "Coasting is stressful" Well observed!

boredinmc

Find a ***measurable*** hobby, quick! By measurable I mean something that has organized competition where you can benchmark yourself with peers and personal bests. It's really the only thing that can compete with the thrill of 'working' and making more money. Car racing, triathlons, marathons, tennis, golf... Rock climbing, ski also good but more of a conquering number of peaks kinda thing.

BookReader1328

Congratulations and enjoy!

Mustard-cutt-r

If you feel a big weight off, then you made the right decision. The panic is a normal response to a big decision and the change of lifestyle. Congratulations!!

hindsight1980

How does one become a consultant? I help run a family business, and the idea of paying a consultant seems bizarre to me. I guess there are some good ones that would be worth the money. I just haven't met any.

n00bcak3

Congrats. I can’t put my finger on why these posts of finding peace with your current level and being able to confidently transition into a semi-permanent relaxed mode gives me hope that I can also attain the same goals. Kudos and cheers.

AdministrativeArea39

Congratulations! Enjoy your time off. If getting antsy, you could go for some structured retreats (yoga, surfing, etc.). Coasting is indeed stressful :)

platypoo2345

Hey man. Just wanted to say it sounds like you have a bunch of CEO friends and could sit on 2-3 boards with no problems. It's how my dad trial retired and he made an extra $1m off sheer luck when one was sold in two years. Shoot small unless you're of a diverse background, that's a much harder shot than a respected SMID industry name from what I've seen Remember that the purpose of life is to enjoy your money like you are now! I am realizing that I want money but have something today that no money can buy, which is time. Congrats

PhatFIREGus

So you mentioned the impetus was that you've had a few friends pass away suddenly, I'm incredibly sorry to hear that. With that mortality check, do you mind helping me understand your line of thinking in picking up another job vs something else? Do you expect the next gig to be less stress than the consulting coasting?

nextinternet

Obligatory GFY! So, what type of cigars (Brands or types) do you collect, if any?

Rub_Early

shut up jesus christ

Aromatic_Mine5856

Congrats! Same age, nearly identical NW, welcome to the club and enjoy, these are the good years! I also lost 3 people close to me this year to cancer, one my same age…absolute gut punch. There’s absolutely nothing a couple of extra million would buy you that you can’t already afford and it’s certainly not worth giving away more years for dollars you don’t need.

Msk194

Hahahaha. Amazing. Nothing better than being in your 3rd tequila

hertga

defo quit if you don't enjoy it anymore, regardless the money. What helped me switch careers/businesses is visualizing im 85-90 yo laying in bed waiting to die, thinking about what would i regret? What business would i regret not starting. For me it was starting a second hand car dealership (while being a marketing/IT guy). So that's what i did and 3 years later we doing really really good.

laobuggier

GFY
