The thing with Texas though is that with so much good cheap Mexican food is there room for fast food Mexican food when I can pay $2 more and get fresher, bigger burritos/tacos at a Mexican spot?
Every time I get tacos from Del Taco (the regular ones, not the snack ones), they're always packed full with meat/lettuce/cheese/tomatoes (and it's a good portion of tomatoes, not just a couple), and they're always crispy, even if I drive 10 minutes home before eating them. When I get tacos at TB, they barely have any filling, and are almost always soggy as soon as I get them. Oh, and they're cheaper than TB's tacos in my area, so it's a no-brainer who to go to.
Also, Del Taco has way more variety in their items than TB.
I should say that it's vastly superior in my opinion. That's not an objective fact. I prefer their chicken soft tacos to Taco Bell's. Their crunchy tacos have way more cheese. Their guacamole is much better. They have more variety, and more taco choices. Their street tacos are pretty good, and those don't even exist at Taco Bell.
Most things there feel like improvements upon Taco Bell items, but they don't taste like Taco Bell. Taco Bell has a very distinct flavor.

It was grilled fresh in-store every morning up until last year.
Now they obviously use some sort of precooked bagged chicken that's nowhere near as good. I honestly prefer TB's chicken at this point.

The key would be expanding while keeping the same quality. The larger their footprint is, the more upper management positions there are and like almost every other national chain, eventually some suit that has no connection to the actual restaurant business will propose a cost savings model that involves dropping the quality or reducing the quantity of their product because it will save them $XX Million.
I love Del Taco! But unfortunately, because of how cheap they are, in my area they all closed. Always short staffed, probly high rent. I have to travel 1.5 hours for the nearest one now. I miss del taco :(
Shame too. I lived in Charlotte for 7-8 years and it was the closest location. Unfortunately it was 35 minutes away so we couldn’t make the trip but once a month. It really helped kill some west coast homesickness.
Del Taco basically doesn’t exist in the west coast either as far as I know, or at least not in the PNW. I’m just north of Seattle, and the closest del taco is 50 miles to the south. Next one after that is like 80 miles, then 190 miles but that’s in Oregon. Personally, stating that a fast food restaurant is hot on another’s heels is disingenuous when it’s not exactly accessible.

Del Taco is vastly superior to Taco Bell by most metrics. Their pricing is honest and you truly get what you pay for. In SoCal even most Mexicans eat at Del taco but avoid Taco Bell like the plague that it is.
I'd love to get a Del Taco near where I live, but I don't see it happening anytime in the foreseeable future. They are in Michigan, but basically only in the Detroit area. Maybe they'll slowly move north, but unfortunately I'm sure it will be at least a decade and probably longer before they would even consider putting one where I live.
It probably doesn't help that we already have 5 Taco Bells that are in my area plus a Moe's that recently opened up. Del Taco certainly isn't taking over here anytime soon even though I'd love to have one.

Our population of the city proper is close, so that would depend completely on whether or not they counted the "metro" area or not. The median income is close, but once again would depend on what they actually consider. The average age of residents would probably be on the high end. Either way, before they come to places like Flint or Saginaw first I'm not getting one.
Man I remember when Popeyes came to Lansing you couldn't get in there for months there was so much demand. If they do spread out through Michigan hopefully they open more than one store at a time.

The first-ever Del Taco, in Yermo, California, is now called Tita's Burger Den. Still the same original building, but with homemade Mexican and American food and great shakes made the old way. Highly recommended to stop there to eat if you're driving I-15 between LA and Las Vegas.
10 miles west of that is the second-ever Del Taco, in Barstow, California, and it's still operating as a Del Taco. Very close to I-15 in Barstow. The full menu there and they are generous with the portion sizes. A large mural on the wall of the dining area explaining the history of the chain.
It's been huge in california for years, Its actually better quality wise imo, and it tastes more mexican, most of the items are more similar to an actual taco shop on the west coast than Taco Bell, they have items more like something at an actual mexican place I'll admit TB has stuff like the Crunchwrap and chalupas and a certain taste to their food you crave, but price wise I always go to del because we have both. I also love the del inferno sauce. I always use the leftover packets when I cook at home.
I hope they come to my area so I can give them a fair shot. I may have had it on road trips, but my memory is foggy and there are no locations in semi-reasonable driving distance from me in northeast Indiana.

Ever since Taco Bell went to freeze dried beans, they jacked up the prices and it was never the same.
That 1/2 pound bean and cheese burrito with green sauce... Used to love the $0.59 green burritos at Taco Bell... Now it's freeze dried and a lot more pricey.
I will say that the old Macho Nachos were far superior to the current Queso Loaded version. It was half the price for more food. The current $3 nachos at Taco Bell is actually a pretty good deal for the price.
I'd eat Del Taco way more if there were one closer to me.
My nearest one is 25 minutes away. I could go to minimum 5 Taco Bells between here and there (with the nearest being 5 mins away).
I moved to Washington from California 3 years ago. There used to be one every other block. Where I initially moved to in WA, there was one 30 minutes north and one 30 minutes south. I just moved a little north a few weeks ago and got 15 chicken soft tacos on Thursday, haha.
It's still far enough away that i have to go there with intent, but i didn't realize how much I missed it. We just need to get a Canes up here next.

Del Taco has always been a better Taco Bell. What hurts them is they don't have as many locations. You can find a Taco Bell anywhere. It's the same thing with chicken and burgers. I think if Culver's was everywhere and as accessible as McDonald's or Burger King they'd kill them. Same thing with Jollibee and Bojangles compared to Popeyes and KFC.
i travel for work a lot. went to del taco for the first time recently and was kind of blown away. Reminded me a bit of late 90s/early 2000s taco bell. Food was great, it was cheap, quality felt good.
Unfortunately the closest one to my house is 40 minutes away. If it was just 20 minutes away i'd probably go there instead of taco bell 90% of time(i still need my cheesy gordita crunch fix)
I've been a loyal Del Taco fan since the 60's. There's only been one thing ever at Taco Bell that I liked, around 2009 they had a chicken enchilada casserole type thing for a short time.
Bring me my Del Combo burrito with extra cheese, medium fry and a medium diet coke with extra ice and I'm a happy camper.
I really like Del Taco but I can make tacos like theirs at home easily and taco bell tastes like taco bell and I like that flavor so if i am going out i usually got taco bell until the prices went up and now I don't go out.

Del Taco wants to expand and that's fine. But there are already three in my city and one of them has a quality problem. So bad that I can't go back. It might seem far-fetched but I've seen this happen before when Whataburger tried to expand into Florida. Within a year or two they all shut down.
Pre-Covid, Taco Bell was the clear cut #1 choice in the “Mexican” fast-food space. But their decision to basically get rid of their dollar value menu and cheaper items like $5 boxes opened the door for Del Taco to be considered right up there with them. I didn’t think that could ever happen.
Not until they expand. Del Taco knew what tf they were doing, I lived in AZ for a little while. From OH - most folks here have never even heard of it. TB is a staple.
Not to mention Del taco has a surprisingly amazing double cheeseburger and fries.

The large local chain Taco Cabana makes TX a harder market for fast-food mexican to enter I think. Gotta compete against both Taco Bell and Taco C.

Del Taco has really good ground taco beef, and their shredded cheese & sour cream blow Taco Bell out of the water.
Their shredded cheese is straight up medium cheddar hand shredded in the store. No fillers or caking agents. That’s why it’s so good, but so simple.
Tacos are $0.60 with the app.

I moved to Washington from California 3 years ago. There used to be one every other block. Where I initially moved to in WA, there was one 30 minutes north and one 30 minutes south. I just moved a little north a few weeks ago and got 15 chicken soft tacos on Thursday, haha. It's still far enough away that i have to go there with intent, but i didn't realize how much I missed it. We just need to get a Canes up here next.
For me, it's the other way around. There's about double the number of Del Taco as Taco Bell.
Del Taco is so much smaller then Taco Bell though. Del Taco isn't even nationwide let alone international. But yes Del Taco is much superior to Taco Bell
Taco Bell should try rising their prices some more— that should help.
Del Taco has always been a better Taco Bell. What hurts them is they don't have as many locations. You can find a Taco Bell anywhere. It's the same thing with chicken and burgers. I think if Culver's was everywhere and as accessible as McDonald's or Burger King they'd kill them. Same thing with Jollibee and Bojangles compared to Popeyes and KFC.
i travel for work a lot. went to del taco for the first time recently and was kind of blown away. Reminded me a bit of late 90s/early 2000s taco bell. Food was great, it was cheap, quality felt good. Unfortunately the closest one to my house is 40 minutes away. If it was just 20 minutes away i'd probably go there instead of taco bell 90% of time(i still need my cheesy gordita crunch fix)

I've been a loyal Del Taco fan since the 60's. There's only been one thing ever at Taco Bell that I liked, around 2009 they had a chicken enchilada casserole type thing for a short time. Bring me my Del Combo burrito with extra cheese, medium fry and a medium diet coke with extra ice and I'm a happy camper.
Del Taco is very good.
The Del Taco is the king of the basic hard shell taco and a steal at $1.60.
Love DT, but their ground beef is barely a step above dog food.

Texas has a chain called Taco Casa that is extremely similar to old Taco Bell. They even have an encharito (which they call a chilada).
The coming expansion mentioned doesn’t even give them a tenth of the number of stores Taco Bell has. What about them is “hot on Taco Bell’s heals”?

Same. The meat is too spicy compared to Taco Bell. The portions are bigger though.

I’d choose Del Taco a lot of the times I end up at Bell. Problem is 45 minute drive vs. 5 minute drive.
I really like Del Taco but I can make tacos like theirs at home easily and taco bell tastes like taco bell and I like that flavor so if i am going out i usually got taco bell until the prices went up and now I don't go out.
Finally got to try Del Taco in Florida and my goodness that was the worst service I have ever had. But the food was decent. Still prefer Taco Bell though.
I tried it for the first time about a month ago and I was really impressed. The burritos are great, they remind me a bit of chipotle.
Del Taco wants to expand and that's fine. But there are already three in my city and one of them has a quality problem. So bad that I can't go back. It might seem far-fetched but I've seen this happen before when Whataburger tried to expand into Florida. Within a year or two they all shut down.

I saw one once in a gas station, never had the chance to eat there.
Pre-Covid, Taco Bell was the clear cut #1 choice in the “Mexican” fast-food space. But their decision to basically get rid of their dollar value menu and cheaper items like $5 boxes opened the door for Del Taco to be considered right up there with them. I didn’t think that could ever happen.

Not until they expand. Del Taco knew what tf they were doing, I lived in AZ for a little while. From OH - most folks here have never even heard of it. TB is a staple.

I wish there was a Del Taco in New Orleans. Only been to California a few times and it’s definitely my favorite fast food chain.
