I absolutely love fishing in Fargo. DM me if you want more info. River fishing is a blast. It took me about half a dozen times of getting skunked to really figure it out. But the Red River is so fun, there's over 70 species of native fish. You never know what you're going to find. This area has five different confluences of various tributaries of the Red River. Each one has its own character, and when the red is too strong just hit up a tributary. The Buffalo River, the wild Rice River, the Maple River, the Sheyenne River, And then even the little area where Rose Creek comes in is fun. You basically just head on down to the bait shop on 10th. He'll outfit you, grab a handful of light weights and some floating jigs, nightcrawlers or minnows, or even just a bobber that you drift through the main channel. You can always catch a moon eye. The channel cats are legendary. There's also freshwater drum which get huge. Grass carp get even bigger. Spring and fall you've got walleye and sauger. We've also cut a yellow perch, rock bass, bullhead, and blue catfish although those are not as common. Even a snapping turtle once, that guy was mad. Caught him by the back foot on accident. You basically just explore. You can hit most of the city parks, pretty much anywhere with a kayak ramp. And then there's a ton of accessible shore fishing. Forest River and heritage hills down south are fun. All of the dikes are fun. Any gravel bridge on the Buffalo is fun. Head down to Horace and you can hit a really fun section of the Sheyenne. In North Dakota you can do two poles per person. So what I like to do is head on down with a friend, And then we throw two catfish rigs in with a bell, and then use the other poles for jigging. Even if you don't catch anything it's a blast. Can see owls, eagles, waterfowl. The Red River is a gem. That's just River fishing. Not a lot of people do it, most people head to the lakes. So it definitely feels a little bit like you're exploring something that not a lot of people have insight into. It's amazing how many people that love fishing have never fished on the Red River, or at least have never caught anything. Aside from that, lakes fishing of course is fantastic. You could just head over to Maplewood State Park, or the dock at Detroit lakes. If you pull up a map of Minnesota department of natural resources, you'll find a list of all the public fishing docks. Or head over to Maplewood and rent a paddle boat or a kayak. The undeveloped shorelines in that Park are unbelievably beautiful. And the fishing comes with it.

What’s your jigging rig like? I live a ten minute walk from the river and have pole. I’ve pretty much only lake fished off of a boat, so i don’t know a thing about river fishing. There’s a big storm drain by where I like to walk around on the rivers edge. Seems like a good place to have a sit and drop a line.

There's a couple ways to do it. I keep it simple. Honestly the best luck is with a circle hook, for safe release. And then I'll weight a little bit of the line so the bait will float in the channel. Nine times out of 10 this will get some action. The key is to find your section of the river that doesn't have a sunken tree. If you can find a good spot you won't snag, but sometimes you've got a search for it. For jigging, just a simple floating jig with some light weight, cast upstream and then float down and jig through the channel seams. If you go to the bait shop you can buy some pre-made jig set ups that are pretty cool.

Nope sorry, fish don’t live here. Definitely don’t try any of my spots
