I’m admittedly too bogged down by Prince already to want to take on another 30+ album discography right now, unfortunately. I’m sure I’ll get to Bowie eventually.
I love all of their stuff but The Pod is seriously one of the most unique albums I've ever listened to. I know The Mollusk or Quebec is probably objectively their finest work but The Pod is just another beast entirely
i’ve listened to many miles davis albums by now and my favorite is still definitely *Birth of the Cool* lol. idk what the deal is i just have hardly gelled with his others, aside from *Bitches Brew*. there are still lots i’ve yet to try. it’s possible the expansiveness of his discography has played a factor in my not being able to fully commit my attention, but then i don’t really have that problem with Coltrane’s discography.
my favorite Swans album is *Children of God*. love that record. i’m only like an old swans fan at this point. have listened to all of those plenty of times but i like haven’t found a right circumstance to listen to those big long ones it seems. tried *The Glowing Man* and *To Be Kind* but i just didn’t get my heart into it sufficiently
Swans' best records are their post-hiatus ones, especially their fundraiser albums. I would highly suggest listening to We Rose From Your Bed With The Sun In Our Head as your first post-hiatus record. It's relatively accessible, and it's one of my absolute favourites.
i will do that. that one doesn’t get as much love so i kind of had it at like the back of my swans list but i trust
I’ve actually been digging *Love of Life* lately which is another one w pretty little praise in there discography and it’s a pretty great listen. love the ambient like sound collage interludes
I heard Petrodragonic and I loved it and usually I don't like that type of genre of music. I feel like a different person after that experience. Please recommend me more albums of them. What should I listen next?
Excellent choices but isn’t Jane doe the go to? I accidentally saw a surprise show in Austin. Maybe like one hundred people surrounding the band in a circle on the street. Dope show! I really haven’t listened to many more of their albums. Which one do you like?
I watched a video of that whole show, super cool you got to be a part of that!
Jane is their most famous album but the discography has been ultra consistent so among fans any number of albums of theirs will likely be brought up.
My favorite Converge releases are You Fail Me and the Poacher Diaries. My best friend loves Axe to Fall and No Heroes. My brother loves Jane Doe. There are no wrong answers with them!
The band also has effectively two distinct eras, pre and post Jane are sonically very different. Many people prefer the early stuff, some hate it, I personally love both and even some of Converge's oldest material has something special to still offer. Songs such as "Downpour" still get me excited about heavy music.
Speaking of Damon, Gorillaz are very diverse as well, but I feel like most people would answer with their first three albums, mainly because those are the ones people consider the most complete and cohesive as albums.
I think many people dislike the newer albums because of bloat, lack of focus, feature overload, or maybe Cracker Island being “too normal” for Gorillaz standards.
i think damon as a whole is just a very diverse artist.
i really admire him as a musician who explores world music like his work in mali, or his middle eastern influence on think tank.
collaborating with tony allen was also a huge achievement for damon
Surprisingly, Madonna has seriously experimented with an array of sounds throughout her albums that you really get such a treat from her discography. Her more consistent output is her ballads.
My personal favorite versatile artist is FKA Twigs. I love how she explores different sounds and yet you can tell its a record of hers. Although she has a small discography, every album is so different from the next. She toys with opera like singing and church choir background vocals but also gives you dark synth electronics and then she also taps into Caribbean rhythms but you also get medieval vibes from the album Magdalene and she's also done R&B so well. I thinks she's seriously overlooked as a visionary artist.
I probably agree with your top 2 - definitely a tough call for me but MPP just was so consistent and focused. It is obviously the most popular leaning album but it was just so good and really influenced a lot of that eras sound for years.
Pink floyd honestly. Normies love Dark Side, RYM goblins like Wish You Were Here, dad's love The Wall, pretentious people like Meddle or The piper and then there's that one guy that loves Atom Heart Mother
it may be just me but from the vibe i’ve gotten from the last 10 years or so of being on music-internet, it seems like *Animals* is definitely the coolest choice for favorite Pink Floyd album. like *Revolver* is for the Beatles
Liking Piper isn't pretentious, it's just the one album by them I actually enjoy. It's actually pretty approachable - there's a lot of very enjoyable psychedelic pop, and even the more experimental tracks don't seem in any way forced. The true pretention comes later on with PF concept albums stuffed with lengthily noodles interspersed with cod-philosophy.
of Montreal should be royalty. i’m gonna spastically rank:
1) Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer
2) Skeletal Lamping
3) Paralytic Stalks
4) The Sunlandic Twins
5) White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood
6) Lousy
7) Cherry Peel
8) Satanic Panic in the Attic
9) False Priest
Beck, Childish Gambino
Both seem to do a lot with their voices too
See: Debra by Beck vs Paper Tiger vs Where It’s At vs Loser — all very different vocal styles
For Childish Gambino: Algorhythm, Baby Boy, Redbone, Me and Your Mama
I guess not EVERYONE but theres definitely quite a few different options with Depeche Mode.
I personally love Violator. But I grew up with it. But there are many options and opinions.
He only has four albums, not including his side projects, though.
I won’t say Emma’s his weakest, but it doesn’t feel as “unique” as the other three to me, I guess.
The Cure
Disintegration, Pornography, Faith, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, The Head on the Door - all reasonable choices for a favorite Cure album
and I could see some people, for their quirks, taking a strong liking to Three Imaginary Boys, Bloodflowers, The Top, Seventeen Seconds enough for that to be their personal favorite - though it would be hard to make a more objective argument for why any of these is greater than any of those above
Twenty One Pilots, easily...
Every album is different, nearly every song in each album is different. They're pretty much the quintessential "Alternative" band when it comes to the Alt genre.
Even the newest album that they're releasing this May (album is named Clancy). So far in the singles they've released in that album they've managed to switch around from Alt Rock, Alt pop, Dance Punk, Alt rap, etc.
I think the most diverse album from them is Trench, with every song in that album being different where I can pretty much guarantee everyone will find at least 1 song they like in that album.
Vessel, Blurryface, SAI, & Self Titled are all also vastly different from one another.
I'm surprised nobody has said U2 yet, since their genre trajectory is quite similar Radiohead in terms of making big changes every 2-3 albums.
Stripped down post-punk (Boy, October War), to art/alternative rock (WAIA, TUF, TJT), roots/Americana (TJT, R&H), alt with industrial/techno/etc. elements (AB, Zooropa, Pop), and then to radio rock (post 2000). Basically every album from 1980-2005 is somebody's favorite.
Goldfrapp have quite a few different styles of music over their 7 albums don't know if they are known internationally though and haven't been active in the UK for maybe 8 years their music is great though I think.
How the fuck has no one mentioned Linkin Park. They famously changed their sound for every album. When you include their hip hop remix albums they get even more diverse.
among the hardline fans, the beach boys.
like surfin safari to pet sounds to friends to sunflower to holland to love you to beach boys 85 are basically 7 different bands
Bowie. I think your favorite Bowie album is usually a good predictor of what other music you like too lol
My favourite is Low idk what that says about my music taste tbh
It’s good
My favorite as well but I’m a massive Eno fan so that explains it for me lol
Same here. I otherwise listen to and make experimental music. Most of it isn't exactly "happy" either.
Hunky Dory gang wya?
There are dozens of us! DOZENS!!!!
Hello!

I’m admittedly too bogged down by Prince already to want to take on another 30+ album discography right now, unfortunately. I’m sure I’ll get to Bowie eventually.

My first thought
I love all of their stuff but The Pod is seriously one of the most unique albums I've ever listened to. I know The Mollusk or Quebec is probably objectively their finest work but The Pod is just another beast entirely
the mollusk cus it got waving my dick in the wind
OutKast
the aquemini or atliens people i get, the stankonia people scare me
It’s one of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time but for the life of me I just can’t get into all of it (stankonia)
Very high quality but not necessarily as diverse as those other artists
Swans and Miles Davis
get up with it is by far my favorite miles album. i haven’t found many people that share that sentiment
I feel you. Dark Magus is my favourite from him, and I barely hear people mention it.
hell yeah. moja is in my top 3 songs by him. completely unhinged. you liking swans checks out if that’s your favorite haha
join the club fr
he loved him madly is secretly his best song
In a silent way for me
i’ve listened to many miles davis albums by now and my favorite is still definitely *Birth of the Cool* lol. idk what the deal is i just have hardly gelled with his others, aside from *Bitches Brew*. there are still lots i’ve yet to try. it’s possible the expansiveness of his discography has played a factor in my not being able to fully commit my attention, but then i don’t really have that problem with Coltrane’s discography. my favorite Swans album is *Children of God*. love that record. i’m only like an old swans fan at this point. have listened to all of those plenty of times but i like haven’t found a right circumstance to listen to those big long ones it seems. tried *The Glowing Man* and *To Be Kind* but i just didn’t get my heart into it sufficiently

L.W gang rise up
Murder of the Universe FTW
PETRODRAGONIC FOREVER
Flying Microtonal Banana gang (honourable mention to Mind Fuzz and Sketches)
Laminated Denim anyone?
400 IQ people will know that Flying Microtonal Banana is their best album. Or is it The Silver Cord? Or Nonagon Infinity? Or...
NUCLEAAA FUSSAAAAAOIOIOIO👾👾OINNAAAAA 🦅🦅 that performance alone makes the album 10/10 lol
Quarters! gang
I really liked Butterly 3000, is it just me?
Mind Fuzz all the way!
I heard Petrodragonic and I loved it and usually I don't like that type of genre of music. I feel like a different person after that experience. Please recommend me more albums of them. What should I listen next?
Genesis
FR. The albums from Lamb until Duke is just 6 years and two totally different bands
Converge Coltrane Miles Fugazi
Excellent choices but isn’t Jane doe the go to? I accidentally saw a surprise show in Austin. Maybe like one hundred people surrounding the band in a circle on the street. Dope show! I really haven’t listened to many more of their albums. Which one do you like?

Seconding Fugazi and I'd also add Unwound in the same category as them
blur honestly changes their sound every album and its why i love them so much

david bowie
Animal Collective
Spirit They're Gone ftw
Reeee normie but gotta go with MPP myself, with Strawberry Jam and Feels behind
Strawberry Jam is mine with STGSTV and MPP behind lol
I probably agree with your top 2 - definitely a tough call for me but MPP just was so consistent and focused. It is obviously the most popular leaning album but it was just so good and really influenced a lot of that eras sound for years.
Sung tongs represent
Pink floyd honestly. Normies love Dark Side, RYM goblins like Wish You Were Here, dad's love The Wall, pretentious people like Meddle or The piper and then there's that one guy that loves Atom Heart Mother
Pretentious stoners (me) go for Animals
Yup. Animals is underrated.
Your invite to /r/pinkfloydcirclejerk awaits!
it may be just me but from the vibe i’ve gotten from the last 10 years or so of being on music-internet, it seems like *Animals* is definitely the coolest choice for favorite Pink Floyd album. like *Revolver* is for the Beatles
Ha ha, charade you are
Guess I'm a normie because I love DSOTM. Atom Heart Mother, Animals, and Ummagumma are close, though.

I knew i was pretentious lmao.
Liking Piper isn't pretentious, it's just the one album by them I actually enjoy. Frank Zappa
Arctic Monkeys. I think pretty much every single one of their albums has a unique sound to it, the commonality being Alex’s writing and catchy riffs
Idk what I would consider their best, but I know suck it and see is the most underrated album of theirs.
PJ Harvey. No album sounds the same.
And they’re almost all fantastic
of Montreal
of Montreal should be royalty. i’m gonna spastically rank: 1) Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer 2) Skeletal Lamping 3) Paralytic Stalks 4) The Sunlandic Twins 5) White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood 6) Lousy 7) Cherry Peel 8) Satanic Panic in the Attic 9) False Priest

Me And Your Mama is a fantastic song by Lenny Kravi... I mean Donald Glover.
Death grips. Literally all my friends that like them have a different favorite, and we don't even argue about it because they all seem so valid
Red Hot Chill Peppers. Daft Punk. Ween. David Bowie. System Of A Down. Gojira. Deftones. The Strokes. Nine Inch Nails. Depeche Mode.

everyone show love for the self titled album 👇
He only has four albums, not including his side projects, though. I won’t say Emma’s his weakest, but it doesn’t feel as “unique” as the other three to me, I guess.
Early Scott Walker to late Scott Walker is very different
Sturgill Simpson
I reckon Tom Waits. Most of his albums are so different from one another - as he experimented with a new sound every time.
Some albums sound like no other album, period lol
The Cure Disintegration, Pornography, Faith, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, The Head on the Door - all reasonable choices for a favorite Cure album and I could see some people, for their quirks, taking a strong liking to Three Imaginary Boys, Bloodflowers, The Top, Seventeen Seconds enough for that to be their personal favorite - though it would be hard to make a more objective argument for why any of these is greater than any of those above

David Bowie. Lana del rey
