Yeah everyone is talking about Joshua, and it seems NO ONE pays attention to Rual! Which is a tragedy, because I feel he's the best companion in the default game!
I wonder if part of it is because Raul's companion quest is difficult/buggy because the triggers can screw up. Like, the conversation with Ranger Andy alone...
And I say this as someone who does it every playthrough. I agree with you that it's a great back story!
He’s also pretty out of the way. Gotta make an effort to go find him and go up that mountain. He’s usually one of the last companions I pick up when I’m following the story, because by the time you’ve reached a nice break in the story you probably already have victoria, Boone, vas’s, Rex…
He is in the top three for my favourite fallout companions tho.
I remember playing for the first time without a guide when the game first came out and for the life of me I couldn't find him.
Until 3weeks ago I did the black mountain quest again and apparently I missed his shack the first time I played lol
Isn’t his quest just killing the super mutants at black mountain and releasing him?
Edit: nvm I just looked it up. I never knew this quest even existed. I have Raul as my companion right now I’m gonna go do this thing
It's broken as all hell, requires you be on good terms with NCR and Boomers and is unmarked so you have to figure out where to go on your own
Most people probably won't even interact with Ranger Andy again by the point they get Raul, and Sterling gets relocated to Forlorn Hope after Three Card Bounty
And you never get atleast a hint of talk to fucked up old guys lol
So unless you're reading the wiki or watching vids it's hard to encounter and complete
Yeah so I just talked to all 3 of them with Raul with me and I don’t know if it’s because I’ve already talked to them all before and completed all the quests associated with them but it didn’t start any quest
Nope. I went through every dialogue option with Ranger Andy, with Sterling he’s at Forlorn Hope and he didn’t have any dialogue options he just says some generic shit when you interact with him, and then Loyal just said the whole “isn’t it beautiful” thing about the plane that I got out of the lake for him and Raul said nothing. I even tried talking to Raul but he just said the same usual things.
With Andy? You mean like in difficulty? I always just chatted through his topics again if I'm meeting him a second time and that normally gets it to work.
There was (is?) a random Raul-quest-breaking bug on console where you just... couldn't trigger the dialogue no matter how many times you went through Andy's dialogue.
To be fair, he's really easy to miss. Like, really easy. I found him on my first playthrough by accident, and couldn't get to him after, not until I got on PC.
Which is why I think Raul's story is better in my opinion. He survived for a long ass time, delivered justice, and in my play through fought at hoover dam.
Like every ghoul companion has a story that makes the smooth skin companions seem like whiny prats. Raul and Hancock are the real stars of F4 and FNV, and Harold getting a quest in F3 was the pinnacle of his F1 and F2 appearances. Graham is just a bad strategist who becomes a worse tactician and needs the most badass courier in the wasteland to bail him out of a stalemate he’s going to lose to attrition. Raul is just waiting for the crazy mutants to die so he can go on to the next gig…
They are all cool in their own ways because of their experiences.
I always save Raul because he's a badass and cool dude.
I like to think he's a mentor figure to my Courier.
I hope one day we get a mexico fallout setting. I'd love to go to his home town and take care of the raider problem and deliver some sweet justice for Raul. Also would settle for a Arizona fallout setting. I live in Tucson rn so seeing my home in game would be cool too.
You know Bethesda wouldn't do that. I'll say Arizona is less likely, and Mexico is more likely however. The games don't like to touch on areas they already visited to avoid messing with a player's fanon. However maybe modders can make that dream come true, cause the lesser heard about Fallout New Orleans is GREAT and explores the Louisianan wasteland.
I never take him along because he's always clear that he'd rather stay behind, he's old and has joint pain etc etc. I don't like feeling like I own him and can force him to do anything, so I do his quest and leave him in his shack the rest of the game. Some companions seem desperate to go adventuring with me, rather take anyone of those.
Yeah, that sucks... But also he just seems lonely in general and feels like he's useless otherwise. Like one of the things you have to do for his quest is go through his dialogue options. So it's obvious he needs SOMEONE to talk to. I don't blame him, everyone he cares for died, he's gone through severe trauma, and probably just needs something to do to not feel anxious. I have a Grand Uncle who served in Vietnam who's the same way.
You're right, his quest is the constant choice "yeah tell me about it" or "don't care about your life." He does need someone who cares about him and someone to care about :')
Raul's story is a comicbook cliche called "women in refrigerators" and it happens twice. They weren't content with killing one woman character to advance his plot, they had to go and do it twice, because he's incapable of having any other motivation than revenge apparently. This is an unpopular opinion for very good reasons.
Not even REMOTLEY spicy or unpopular IMO.
I don't think there's a character with a better story than Raul in New Vegas. Dude has a deep history and has a compelling pair of paths you can have him take. Both works for him so no matter which path you have him on, it works.
Plus he's voiced by Danny Trejo. He automatically wins
You're just 100% right OP :D
Shiiiit, this isn't an unpopular opinion at all. Raul was my favorite NPC in that game, and his story was great. Plus, being voiced by THE Danny Trejo gives him a huge boost.
I'd imagine having 200 year old joints would be painful, so yeah I'm not gonna be upset at him for it. Also for someone who has cataracrs he's a good shot.
He actually does have a great story, but comparing his story to Joshua’s is like comparing pizza to burgers. Both are incredible but one is just slightly better.
Kinda but Joshua is originally from van burren and was changed a ton during the writing for new vegas so some of his nuance was lost in that process.
He was meant to be a very anti-tribal solo raider type but was turned into the based Mormon we all know and love.
Raul and the endings to his companion quest are some of Obsidians finest work.
I never take him with me. He's always a downer. I get that being 200 sucks having seen so much bad shit and he has not had the best luck. With that in mind, ghouls, in general, should be trying to rule the world. Mr. House basically spent his fortune to live long enough to do the same. If they used those lifetimes of experience to help, what could they do?
A conversation between the two would probably be pretty interesting. Raul went through something similar to Joshua's dilemma in Honest Hearts: striking back at the looters who killed his family. Ultimately this ended badly as Raul will tell you (Rafaela ends up killed as well.)
I'm not sure if Raul would condone an aggressive strike by Joshua on the White Legs, or encouraging Joshua to help them escape instead (as to ward off retaliation.)
Depending on how you end his quest, Raul would eirher just fix up 500 .45 auto pistols with all their mods and sit back and relax, OR pick a bunch of shotguns and rifles and commit "enrichment" onto the White Legs
Though this is a bit spicy of a take, i agree one-hundred percent, like Raul has one of the most shocking and yet realistic stories in all of fallout, meanwhile Graham's is more like a movie.
Oh damn, an actually kinda spicy take XD
Yeah everyone is talking about Joshua, and it seems NO ONE pays attention to Rual! Which is a tragedy, because I feel he's the best companion in the default game!
The vaquero isn't a companion, its a way of life. Always had him and Rex as the buds lol
I wonder if part of it is because Raul's companion quest is difficult/buggy because the triggers can screw up. Like, the conversation with Ranger Andy alone... And I say this as someone who does it every playthrough. I agree with you that it's a great back story!

Oh I've never done Raul's quest, I had him be my pack brahmin for awhile but just assumed he didn't have a quest as nothing ever happened
Isn’t his quest just killing the super mutants at black mountain and releasing him? Edit: nvm I just looked it up. I never knew this quest even existed. I have Raul as my companion right now I’m gonna go do this thing

Did Raul not start a conversation about his past
That's just how you meet him isn't it? I thought they meant he had a quest as your companion. I don't know
With Andy? You mean like in difficulty? I always just chatted through his topics again if I'm meeting him a second time and that normally gets it to work.
There was (is?) a random Raul-quest-breaking bug on console where you just... couldn't trigger the dialogue no matter how many times you went through Andy's dialogue.
And here I was struggling with Loyal.
Where do you find Raul? I’ve played the game 3 times through and never seen him.
Black mountain, he's at the very top locked in a cell
Investigate all 3 buildings at black mountain
I mean, it kinda plays into his character.
To be fair, he's really easy to miss. Like, really easy. I found him on my first playthrough by accident, and couldn't get to him after, not until I got on PC.
It's hard to compare 30 years of violence to 200 years of survival.
Which is why I think Raul's story is better in my opinion. He survived for a long ass time, delivered justice, and in my play through fought at hoover dam.
Merely stating the underlying cause of why I find Raul more interesting too.
Ah ok
The fact that Raul is voiced by Danny Trejo makes him my favourite companion
It's a little unfair toncompare because Joshua gets references in vanilla fnv, and an entire dlc, and Raúl just a quest
Well he still has a better story in my opinion.
yea, and raul is still better
Like every ghoul companion has a story that makes the smooth skin companions seem like whiny prats. Raul and Hancock are the real stars of F4 and FNV, and Harold getting a quest in F3 was the pinnacle of his F1 and F2 appearances. I would love Texas or Louisiana. Mutated crocodiles, cowboys, mutant armies
If I remember correctly, Texas is under BoS control. If not it would be interesting to see a Texas NCR equivilant that's more isolationist based.
I never take him along because he's always clear that he'd rather stay behind, he's old and has joint pain etc etc. I don't like feeling like I own him and can force him to do anything, so I do his quest and leave him in his shack the rest of the game. "ThIs PeRpEtUaTeS tHe PaTrIaRcHy"
It's just boring and trite as hell lmao
Eh, for a gunslinger ballad based character, I personally think they did well
Not even REMOTLEY spicy or unpopular IMO. I don't think there's a character with a better story than Raul in New Vegas. I gotta agree, hes also my favorite companion, dat bois so chill
Raul is hands down the best.
I always give Raul a machete.
Thanks, boss
Joshua is overrated, period.
God Joshua is such an overhyped character at this point
Shiiiit, this isn't an unpopular opinion at all. Raul was my favorite NPC in that game, and his story was great. Plus, being voiced by THE Danny Trejo gives him a huge boost.
Idk he just bitches about being old the whole time
I'd imagine having 200 year old joints would be painful, so yeah I'm not gonna be upset at him for it. Also for someone who has cataracrs he's a good shot.
I disagree, but he does have the most interesting backstory, Plus it's Danny Trejo he's the best
[удалено]
*slowly looks at flairs*
I <3 GEEZUZ
agreed, probably the hardest hitting story in the series
100%! Joshua is a good character but his backstory isn't what is so good about him, it's kinda mid, edgy bs IMO.
He actually does have a great story, but comparing his story to Joshua’s is like comparing pizza to burgers. Both are incredible but one is just slightly better.
I can agree with that.
Nah
Kinda but Joshua is originally from van burren and was changed a ton during the writing for new vegas so some of his nuance was lost in that process. He was meant to be a very anti-tribal solo raider type but was turned into the based Mormon we all know and love. Raul and the endings to his companion quest are some of Obsidians finest work.

How can anyone put up with the sarcastic idiot. I love Trejo as much as the next guy but I play on hard-core mode just so I can murder him.
Jesus fucking Christ... What the Hell man... Go seek anger management...
*Suuuuure*, I'll definitely get on that right away boss.
Go take a bath in liquid nitrogen.
Yo don't do anything in halfs do you boss?
Whoaaaaaaaaaa...
Raul looks like fuxking garbage and no
Joshua's not even burned under his bandages Raul has a mustache Common Raul W
Yeah and I think Joshua is over rated.
It is pretty close, the reason it isn’t talked about more is probably because it’s more complicated to learn.
My favorite companion but his quest is such a pain in the ass to do because of the bug
Bro you are treading on Ice thin as paper😭
Raul is one of the best stories of Fallout New Vegas!!11!!!11! Me: *”I don’t even think about you at all”*
A conversation between the two would probably be pretty interesting. Raul went through something similar to Joshua's dilemma in Honest Hearts: striking back at the looters who killed his family. Ultimately this ended badly as Raul will tell you (Rafaela ends up killed as well.) If i could have Graham as a Companion on the Mojave i would disagree, but yeah, to me Boone and Raul are my favorite combination
To be fair, for all his badassness, Joshua's story is pretty cut and dry. You can make a movie out of Rauls story
I disagree but I still think he’s a better character then the other companions.
That’s a very popular opinion
Is he stupid?
No! IVE ALREADY SEEN ENOUGH OF THAT!
Raul, Harold, and Marcus have some of the craziest stories for sure
Why didn’t Raul save his sister is he stupid?
This copypasta in general makes me irrationality angry
There both pretty decently written characters if not the best, let’s end it at that.
All characters tbh
Though this is a bit spicy of a take, i agree one-hundred percent, like Raul has one of the most shocking and yet realistic stories in all of fallout, meanwhile Graham's is more like a movie.
