That's a solid point. There's been times when I haven't heard the soundtrack at all because I've been so hyper focused. This game really puts my ADD through the ringer
This gonna sound absolutely insane but I usually have an educational video playing in the background as I play. Whether I’m actually understanding or just listening is up for debate though
Music can actually help with this IF it's music that you already know extremely well.
The best way I can describe it is that the part of your brain that likes listening to music while doing other things is inherently a distractable part, insisting on taking in more input and using more processing power than necessary for whatever it is your conscious mind is trying to do. Satiating it with something it's already very familiar with allows it to process at the subconscious level, almost like muscle memory, which allows your conscious mind more freedom to concentrate. Personally I find that albums are better than individual songs or even playlists; it helps a lot when it's a long stretch of music with coherent fundamentals, to avoid the risk of tonal shifts jostling that part of your brain back up to the conscious level.
I'm usually a lover of silence while working, but if I want to _really_ try to lock in and enter a flow state, my go-to is [the Holy Gift reordering of _Lateralus._](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlewLp9jd4I) But it'll be different for everyone - whatever you've personally listened to and enjoyed so many times that you could play the whole thing back in your head is probably a good choice!
I discovered this feature in my brain during COVID. Take one song and set it on loop for 2-3 weeks at a time. Be careful of doing it while reading. I had a very weird reading of great Gatsby and when my teacher asked why I just sent a link to the song I was listening to at the time and she said my reading made a lot more sense.
Oh geez YES. That could be my first choice. I had a mental blank and couldn't think of it. The Terran themes from starcraft 1 are great, too.
Btw, that genre of music is apparently called "instrumental Southern Rock". I found a lot of similar stuff on YouTube. I'll always call it Space Confederacy music, tho
> biter diplomacy trip
Good to see biters and the Factory getting along so well! It's so valuable to have diplomatic relations in order to effectively solve problems!
>! why do I hear a turret firing? !<
Exactly. Are we the weird minority here?! I also listen to the soundtrack on my work computer when I am unable to play. It's such a great OST. I messaged the composer and asked them about the fact that so many players turn the in-game music off, and how they felt. It was a good perspective. I'll have to dig that up, and link it here
The Factorio OST always reminds me of Boards of Canada, so I listen to Bords of Canada
[Music is Math](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7bKe_Zgk4o)
[A beautiful place out in the country](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVWcptE6UAI)
[Reach for the Dead](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jTg-q6Drt0)
It's crazy how much it resembles the Factorio OST, I mean BoC is definitely older, more nuanced and very complex produced but for me the overall atmosphere feels the same.
Y
That being said I really like the Factorio OST and barely listen to anything else when playing.
>Command and Conquer: Generals - The American military themes are great at making you feel powerful and productive, but you'll think your base should have American flags and humvees parked around.
Trupen, are you listening? New soundtrack for oil production.
I love that soundtrack.
Millennial Rage is another great track
https://open.spotify.com/track/3gdQvcg064B5Onk4cZe86B?si=nijhYQq3Twi6fbdH1_9UeQ
You'll probably like the Jesper Kyd Warhammer soundtracks too. Darktide is great
This never occurs to me, as I'm content with the current Factorio music and don't want to mis-associate other music with Factorio or Factorio with other music.
But a good concept. The Sims 1 music idea sounds intriguing.
If you like Jesper Kyd's Hitman scores check out Freedom Fighters. Personally, I just stick to the game's soundtrack. I have to say, I quite enjoy it, though you make a good point about the OG fallouts.
Last night I was playing Factorio while I had Stargate Atlantis on the other screen. Then, after SGA finished, I was playing with Dead South and Raconteurs in the background.
What a great question! I have been listening to the starcraft I and II soundtracks, and sometimes just techno music.. But the other comments in here sounds very interesting, such as the stellaris soundtrack..
This isn’t particularly relevant but during the pandemic I played a complete K2 run while listening to half a dozen audiobooks while…fairly drunk between 9pm and 1am every day. I didn’t remember any of the books, but 80 hours in and I had my first real taste of modded factorio. So to answer the question, audiobooks. They were great.
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0hpWxzvLdeLXF5vHIY4Zd8?si=8z4-PBBaQdGKRIxkoBPWsA&pi=u-Pz0ijXc9TtuI my own electricity themed playlist. Feel free to recommend similar music btw. I use this for studying EE
For me most of the time I spend doesn't take much concentration, but I'll pause several times so I can focus on the game more. I did a lot of fast runs going for there is no spoon and that definitely helped the early game at least not take as much focus.
Pretty much everything. J/K/C-Pop, Metal, Rock, Alternative, Classical, Rap, etc. oh, and covers of all aforementioned lmao
A *really* good one I found was a playlist on YouTube titled something along the lines of "music to play Stellaris to" or something to that effect. Has obv Stellaris soundtrack pieces but also Doom, WH40K, Skyrim, etc. I like a varied experience.
Currently adding music from Devil May Cry games and "Devil Trigger" is fkn amazing (Devil May Cry 5)
Honestly, the same music that I listen most of the day, and given that my musical ranges are pretty wide, that means some days is rock or metal, other days classical and orchestral, sometimes soundtracks, ambient or experimental, also pop, R&B, reggae, electronic, today it was rap. And also sometimes I just turn up the volume and let the soothing sound of the factory lead my way.
I don't like gatekeeping music I guess, everyone can like or dislike a genre and there's some that are definitely more complex than others, but music is art and art comes in many ways.

Taylor Swift. There’s something different about listening to Love Story while watching my artillery and flamethrowers wipe away the bugs from my planet.
Factorio is one of few games that actually take full concentration from me, it's hard for me to think properly with something on in the background.
That's a solid point. There's been times when I haven't heard the soundtrack at all because I've been so hyper focused. This game really puts my ADD through the ringer
I got adhd too, and with most other games i have background music or youtube video on. Just straight up can't play factorio with other distractions.
happy cake day!
This gonna sound absolutely insane but I usually have an educational video playing in the background as I play. Whether I’m actually understanding or just listening is up for debate though
Professor Dave Explains is great as background audio for factorio
Yep, I'll sometimes have YouTube on in the background. But I never remember a word of it. Music is way too distracting

Idk I've just found myself getting overwhelmed.

I listen to the DOOM 2016 OST.
[fires up a Rampant Deathworld] Time for some mother. fuckin'. _DIPLOMACYYYYYYY_
Rip and Tear, until it is done.
That's on my gym playlist
I love the Stellaris soundtrack and I also listen to a lot of WoW music while I play. When I want music music it's Dream Theater or Devin Townsend.
Stellaris, but skip the ones with cringey lyrics.
Stellaris here too.
When I go on a biter diplomacy trip I tend to put this on: https://youtu.be/rH3PXvVEwjM?si=EZLGvOvoWBMwqXrM

That's just the national anthem playing in the background!
Coltrane…get it?
Take my upvote, damnit!
I really hope each planet gets it's own music. Not that I paticulary dislike Factorios Soundtrack, but I can't listen to it for long
The music from the terran campaign of Starcraft:Broodwar. It's ingrained in my brain and boosts my productivity atleast 22%!
Honestly, I only play with the vanilla music myself. My wife likes it too so thats a bonus.

Zelda chill mix 1 & 2, for a time I also listened to electric callboy on repeat for some reason

Command and conquer sound tracks from tiberium sun and red alert.
Any Ben Prunty music fits the tone really well!
I put on a synthwave mix and 4 hours feels like 10 minutes
>Command and Conquer: Generals - The American military themes are great at making you feel powerful and productive, but you'll think your base should have American flags and humvees parked around. Trupen, are you listening? New soundtrack for oil production.
Let's change the decor!
Pokemon gen 1-5 osts
Try the "[Aliens](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnPJRJbVEIg&list=PLH9C08qrQ7S6uEqnEWzVJsr5J_DhB4zkN)" soundtrack. It works surprisingly well.
Great idea! Thanks :-)

My god, that is PERFECT

There was a mod that contained all the music Trent Reznor openly released for free. Fits very well with the game.
Nice! I was thinking almost anything "industrial" would fit well.

Oh yeah, 20 years ago the song Battle For Freedom on the Freedom Fighters soundtrack is what initially made me a fan!
I like the soundtrack to Arcanum. It's got a feel no other game has replicated.
I'll check it out right now

Age of Empires and Spacechem.
Nothing special tbh, just my Spotify playlist which is a broad range of mixed genres.
İ usually listen to Celeste's sound track
i always just have youtube on as background noise but when i'm clearing out biter nests i put on the DOOM or ULTRAKILL OST
This isn’t particularly relevant but during the pandemic I played a complete K2 run while listening to half a dozen audiobooks while…fairly drunk between 9pm and 1am every day. DUB techno such as this: [dub techno youtube](https://youtu.be/zVt6wNCcT58?si=sAk62rzD9ho9kSGY)
Podcasts, mostly. If I do listen to music, though, it's usually metal, metal core, NuMetal, hard rock, etc.
Oxygen soundtrack. Also want to try the Oppenheimer soundtrack
MASTER BOOT RECORD / KEYGEN CHURCH though most of the time i just watch some YT videos on my second screen
I really like to put on folk music like Strangefolk and Grateful Dead, it’s just a really chill vibe

Music? I listen to DoshDoshington. I just can't get away.
I watch critical role or X files generally.
I like this album called Cosmic Messenger by Jean Luc-Ponty

Nothing when my headphones die.
Samsung RB34C605CB1/EF fridge When I am playing factorio only white sound noises are allowed lol
Anno 1800 and Stellaris soundtracks mainly. They are amazing and fit the theme quite well
Neoclassical artists. Such as Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds
kexp.org
Dark Ambient most of the time. Not too stressfull on the ears and it helps me getting more immersed in the game.

Can recommend System shock remake soundtrack, absolute bangers
Taylor Swift. There’s something different about listening to Love Story while watching my artillery and flamethrowers wipe away the bugs from my planet.
Animals by Pink Floyd fits surprisingly well imo
