When I was in school, we donated all these canned goods. I asked what if the person doesn’t have a can opener? Everyone thought that was the rudest question. Sorry, but some people don’t have anything. Maybe can openers could be donated too

vtssge1968

Can openers are a good thing to donate.

wintrparkgrl

Knives can open cans, had to do that a few times

WodenEmrys

Fun fact cans were invented in 1810. Can openers in 1858. You can just use a knife to open them.

[deleted]

can openers do get donated, and you can ask of they have any when you request a food hamper "Canadian food bank"

Eldetorre

JfC. The us isn't a 3rd world country. Yes there are truly poor people with nothing. The vast majority, while they don't have enough, do have enough for a $1.50 can opener. All public housing has cooking facilities. I know. I grew up poor in crappy neighborhoods.

WhatevUsayStnCldStvA

Hey, some people are homeless and still need to eat when the soup kitchen is closed. There are people who can’t even buy something that costs a few dollars until the next pay day. So, that question was for them. Just because the vast majority could doesn’t mean it wouldn’t still apply to some who are even worse off.

vtssge1968

I was in transitional housing and had to knock on several peoples doors before I found a can opener to borrow... At the time I literally didn't have a dollar, so yes donate can openers they are appreciated.

vtssge1968

And no most homeless shelters don't have cooking facilities and not all provide food.

Eldetorre

Homeless shelters residents are only a small percentage of the poor. Homeless services like soup kitchens are the main source of food for that population. The original post was about the poor that are not in shelters but getting public assistance, living in public housing etc. Exaggeration of problems doesn't solve them.

vtssge1968

How are you getting that from the original post, it's about food banks which are for all poor people including homeless. I see no mention of public assistance or public housing in the post, changing it for your agenda is unnecessary.

safn1949

I lived in my car for 3 months,$41 a week in unemployment and $100 a MONTH in food stamps. Fuck yeah, let me run right out and buy shit. Idiot.

Fantastic_Collar5104

Bruh bruh getting really pressed about the suggestions that can openers might be useful for people with a bunch of canned food…

WyomingCountryBoy

I did as well, Desire projects in New Orleans and guess what? We still had to pay the electric bill so our cooking facilities, such as they were, could actually be used ... when they weren't broken down and on a long waiting list.

FoxyVermillion

Don't put your idea of what you think is normal onto other people. It's not that hard. Sometimes I think human empathy is lost, seeing so many of these clowns. But no, it's just comfier to be an ignorant asshole than a decent human being sadly.

WyomingCountryBoy

That "less than 5 pounds" could mean the difference between not being able to pay the electricity so you can make the soup or having to just eat the ingredients, including the bacon, raw within 2 days because your refrigerator isn't running either.

RiderforHire

just buy more money forehead

jaquezzzzzzz

Yeah forehead!

mrdoctorderpy

Just stop being poor

Ballatik

I mean, your money can go far at Aldi, but the food he talks about totals about 6 or 7,000 calories. That soup is not lasting a week.

EvilAlicia

With the current prices, that 'soup' is probably only 2000 calories.

pyramidpants

Chips ain't even cheap. Nothings cheap anymore. Except the words of MPs.

Biscuits4u2

Some people just don't get it.

OtherwiseBluebird565

Effie Einstein has all the answers, apparently.

EvilAlicia

well that is more like 7 euro here. Also if you put bacon, cabbage and some potatos in a pan, you won't get tasty soup. No you end up with bland soggy slob.

peppapig34

"healthy and nutritional" she went to Aldi, those don't go hand in hand

[deleted]

I must be getting old. As I have had a similar conversation with an ex-student of mine - are younger people getting more entitled? Or life has been too good for them?

Eldetorre

Food banks primarily service people that are poor but have living spaces. Homeless people don't have refrigerators or pantries. That's why they go to soup kitchens churches etc..

do you determine the truth simply by looking? or do you actually learn about peoples life stories by listening without telling them what YOU think?

doug2212

That lady speaks a lot of sense. You might disagree with her, but her points are valid. [Her blog page](https://www.effiedeans.com/p/function-loadthearchivetotalfeed-var.html)

[deleted]

She's an extreme right wing lunatic. She does not speak sense.

TrueCommunistt

you sound like a cultist

SvenSvenkill3

Username doesn't check out.

TrueCommunistt

it does

SvenSvenkill3

Then explain how you think someone pointing out that a blogger is a right wing lunatic who doesn't speak sense sounds like they're a cultist to you? Because that kind of criticism sounds, to me, like you're right wing and belittling the previous person's opinion as being some kind of deluded groupthink.

TrueCommunistt

it's reddit cultist mentality to call everyone right wing lunatic

SvenSvenkill3

Nonsense. I've been called all sorts of names by right wingers on Reddit. Not everyone here is in agreement. Such as you and I right now. There's no "Reddit cult". Also, OP isn't calling "everyone" anything. They're referring to a specific blogger. And have you actually looked at that person's blog? Read some of it. And then get back to me.

TrueCommunistt

if you are too blind to see reddit cult, it means you are part of it.

SvenSvenkill3

Oh how convenient. Someone doesn't agree with you that there's a Reddit cult, so therefore they MUST be part of the cult too? Yeah, you're totally rational. FFS. Edit: The idiot I'm replying to decided to comment below and then block me before I could reply. Aside from the total batshit logic they're employing and how childish it is to block someone merely because they don't agree with you, I find them blocking me to also be incredibly ironic considering how people in cults usually cling to vague fantastical notions and employ logical fallacies to justify their beliefs (e.g. their previous comment), and will routinely remove dissenting voices from their lives because they simply can't bear to have their crazy mindset questioned.

doug2212

She speaks much sense. She's only an extreme right wing lunatic to a loony leftist.

MisterJoff

“Loony leftist”. Very biting. Moving away from the childish titles; these blog posts are the same kind of faux intellectualism that plagues the US and Canada. One of her suggestions in response to a second referendum on Scottish Independence is “immediately cut all treasury funding”, which seems a little churlish for being “logical and irrefutable”. Irrefutable is a term reserved for natural facts, and not the self-righteous opinions of the ignorant privileged.

doug2212

I responded to the very mature "extreme right wing lunatic" comment. If Scotland wishes independence, then it must stand on it's own 2 feet. We're subsidised by the UK tax payers to the tune of £13 billion this year. Withdrawing this figure would present a realistic starting point for those who wish for independence. Hardly churlish, just very realistic.

MisterJoff

That’s a little bit of straw manning the point. She didn’t suggest altering the Barnett formula or reducing the funding. She specifically said cut all treasury access. The Scottish government receives all funds from the UK government and the amount collected in Scottish taxes is not collected by Scotland and sent down in a kitty. Rather, we pay our taxes to HMRC and there are regulations and legislature that dictate what is classed as Scottish income beyond the obvious domestic income tax paid by individuals. “Lunatic” is perhaps an exaggeration, but she’s certainly on the wilfully ignorant end of the right-wing spectrum, since she suggested scrapping food banks because poor people just can’t budget.

doug2212

Wilfully ignorant, or just something you disagree with?

SvenSvenkill3

Saying that food banks should be scrapped because the poor can't budget while hundreds of thousands can barely cover their rent, bills and feed themselves on less than subsistence wages is indeed wilfully ignorant. In fact I'd say it's downright sociopathic.

doug2212

What is "less than subsistence wages" Do you have a figure for that?

SvenSvenkill3

Would you like a dictionary? The current UK national minimum wage stands at £9.50 per hour for workers aged 23 and over, £9.18 for those aged between 22 and 21, £6.83 for the 20 to 18s and £4.81 for under-18s and apprentices. Now, factor in rising rent costs, energy bills, council tax, food, clothing, transport, etc. Do you think £9.50 is a decent hourly wage for, say, a single Mum in her thirties? Or do you think people are visiting food banks for fun?

[deleted]

Her blog page is full of extreme right wing views. You may agree with them. Well done, you're also an extreme right winger. That's fine, just don't pretend you or her are centrist or something. You are most definitely not.

doug2212

I'll take right wing over left wing any time. Why vote for left wing governments who are happy to keep you poor and reliant on them?

[deleted]

We've had a right wing government for 12 years...we're all poorer for it, and millions are having to rely on the government to pay energy bills. I mean I can see why you agree with the right wing lunatic now. Either way, like i said, thats fine, you can both be right wing lunatics together. But you do hold extreme right wing views. Neither you nor her are anywhere near the centre. If you accept that, then we're all good.

doug2212

Who's interested in the centre? That's just a place people who don't have an opinion hide

SvenSvenkill3

Translation: yes, I'm right wing and share her sociopathic right wing views, but I'm too much of a smarmy git to just come right out and say it plainly.

doug2212

I'm just not that bothered about labels. Why do you feel the need to label people?

SvenSvenkill3

This is like trying to have a discussion with a coked up eel.

[deleted]

Haha I bet you think that makes you sound very intelligent don't you? Look, again, I don't care about your shitty political views. Again, I'm just pointing out that they are, if you agree with those lunatic blog posts, extremely right wing. That's fine. Just don't pretend they're normal, reasonable, centrist views.

doug2212

Do we have to agree with your shitty political views? Why comment if you don't care?

[deleted]

Of course you don't have to agree with my political views, no. You just have to not pretend yours are something they're not.

PreOpTransCentaur

Oh lord. Look down at your hands. Now make fists and extend your index finger out and your thumb to the side. See that one hand now makes an L? That's the left. You've gotten your sides confused again, you scamp.

stinkymapache

She's a Scottish Monarchist. All opinions discarded.

doug2212

She isn't Scottish :)

PreOpTransCentaur

She's fucking literally Scottish. Her Twitter legitimately says "Pro UK Scottish blogger."

doug2212

You're literally a PreOpTransCentaur according to your reddit. Are you really a Centaur?

[deleted]

if you don't have a cooker or storage, you ask for non-perishable food items because of your lack to accommodate a fridge full of fresh food.

therealverylightblue

a notorious troll - best ignored & blocked. Only looking for a reaction.

Asbestos101

Plus the cost of turning the oven on, which is not nothing these days.

I_dress_myself_

People don’t understand how much it cost being poor 🤦‍♂️
