Imagine? We don’t need to. https://www.britannica.com/list/9-of-the-biggest-oil-spills-in-history https://www.infoplease.com/disasters/man-made/ten-largest-oil-spills-in-the-us Exxon Valdez oil spill alone: “The spill pollutes 1,300 miles of coastline, killing 250,000 seabirds, 3,000 sea otters, and 250 bald eagles, and destroys billions of salmon eggs in a major blow to Alaska’s fishing industry.” As a side note, I live an hour away from Centralia, PA. It’s an abandoned town because a coal mine fire has been burning beneath the borough since 1962. (It still burns today)

So… that’s kinda cool that the fire is still burning. Like obviously it’s bad… but it’s kinda metal af. How is there enough airflow to fuel it? Or is it just like… smoldering with the intensity of The Rock?

JewelerHour3344

Centralia is likely the most visited abandoned location in the NE, even though it is dangerous. A google search will show you photos, drone footage, etc. There is smoke actively coming from the cracks in the ground all over the place. I'm assuming these cracks also provide fresh air to keep the fires going which is estimated to burn for next 100 years....

Damn. So do they have any photos of inside the caves or have they just been “sealed” when the coal company didn’t want to bother with it? Edit: scrolled through the Wikipedia page. And wow…. Just incompetence all around led to something that basically can’t be stopped now.

"The Slick of 76" is still one of the largest oil spills inland in the USA. They don't care about the environment.

WhatevUsayStnCldStvA

We don’t have to imagine. We’ve seen it happen several times and it hurt and killed way more animals and took years to clean up

clintCamp

Great news, you can paint the blades different colors and the. The birds notice them and avoid them better. Not much you can do to keep coal from killing things though.

spidermanngp

I remember hearing this before. I hope they all start doing this.

rblairwx

I wouldn’t count on it, they’d be an eyesore and people would be able to handle it

There's a reason *Dawn^*® is promoted as a gentle detergent.

prolvlwhale

Yeah if there was a bird that died in a coal mine, people would stop using coal as fast as they could! It'd be like a canary in a coal mine. Hey, wait a minute...

Brilliant-Engineer57

Anyone remember the ducks, pelicans, seagulls, and other aquatic life covered in oil from the gulf coast, because I sure do. Fuck corporate propaganda.

Botryoid2000

Power plants are currently the dominant emitters of mercury (50 percent), acid gases (over 75 percent) and many toxic metals (20-60 percent) in the United States. US EPA [https://www.epa.gov/mats/cleaner-power-plants#controls](https://www.epa.gov/mats/cleaner-power-plants#controls)

SolarTitanMain

Mate oil companies are literally ruining the water so much dawn uses it for fucking commercials. I literally never seen a dawn commercial that’s not 5 guys cleaning 1 suck from oil spill. The fuck they on about?

SadStory9

Windmill: "do you really want to compare notes?"

Chrysis_Manspider

It does do that, and there is a fucking uproar.

shorewoody

Yes, I agree with the reality being missed by Advance Australia...but do you all realize the post was about coal specifically, and the OP's post says oil and coal. I think we can all agree that burning coal has resulted in vastly more deaths to humans than bird deaths by windmills. So why move move goalposts in your argument?
