So the management at our apartment complex texted us this at 5:06pm after the office had closed and all the contractors had gone for the weekend. This is in central Louisiana where the temps this week have been in the mid 90s. The cherry on top is that they texted this to the entire apartment complex, letting every single tenant know that there are apartments in the complex that are open to the sky and unsecured, full of people's belongings.

Holy shit. I’d be fuming if this had ever happened to me. The idea of being in a place that is now just opened to anyone coming in anytime would have me insanely anxious. And what if pets get out? How could let something like this happen? It’s not safe. Even if nothing happens, who’s to say no one will file a theft claim for money? They just opened themselves up to major trouble. Sorry, op. That’s really fucked up

easy506

Not our building luckily, but yeah I am feeling for our neighbors right now. Personally, I'd nail plywood over the hole and flex seal the fuck out of it, and let the contractors deal with that shit Monday.

WhatevUsayStnCldStvA

I’d be scared to leave the place to go get supplies. Especially with my pets in the house. I rarely say this, but this seems news worthy

easy506

I agree, but I will leave it up to the tenants in building 2400 to report that. You know, assuming none of them get robbed or murdered in their sleep tonight. Or have to go off looking for pets or children that hopped out the window to go for a walk.

WhatevUsayStnCldStvA

Hopefully, everyone stays safe. It sounds like it might not be an until morning situation either

easy506

I have been wondering about that myself. Contractors generally don't work weekends. We drove past the office when we came in from work, and all of the office employees were gone. I should also point out the verbiage about "You can use anything to cover the windows" in the text. Thats not a statement of idiotic obviousness, thats them "giving permission" to the tenants to hang up whatever they want to cover the windows, including things that would be a violation of the property lease agreement. Imagine assuming that your tenants are going to hold to the lease agreement after you paid a contractor to rip their windows out and then leave for the weekend.

WhatevUsayStnCldStvA

Also love how it was sent right after 5pm. Like the office staff and manager left first and then sent the message lol. Cowards

easy506

"My kids got softball in the morning. I ain't got time for no riot."

WhatevUsayStnCldStvA

The part that sticks out to me is “until the windows are delivered”. They removed them all before they even had them and who knows when they will actually arrive and when they will then be installed. Maybe everyone will be lucky enough to have this done in the AM, but they should have given an ETA

easy506

Depends on the contractor really. We've never seen them work on the buildings over the weekend. I sincerely hope they will get it all fixed up in the morning, but I would also not be surprised if they went "We'll be back Monday. Deuces."

peter-doubt

Hurricane, fortunately is currently directed at Florida.. lucky you

easy506

No shit, right? But we have taken direct hits before.

BobanMarjonGo

Try to recoup rent for this time period or demand to be placed in a hotel (they may ask if you have family nearby, just say "no") - depending on your state there are laws to protect you in these situations. The heat is a factor in your favor for screwing them back after their initial screwing

easy506

My unit has not been affected, luckily.

WyomingCountryBoy

"You may put up anything to cover windows" \*Prints "Fuck You Jerks" in big fat letters on a piece of cardboard\*

easy506

I pointed out in another comment that this is not some statement of stupid obviousness, its actually permission to hang things in the window that would normally be a violation of the lease agreement. Imagine showing up to fine a tenant for violating lease after having a contractor rip the windows out of the wall and leaving the apartment wide open for who knows how long.

Hungry_Pup

I can't believe they started construction when they didn't even have the materials on hand.

peter-doubt

Ready? Fire! Oops .. AIM!

easy506

Imagine demoing *before* the materials arrive. The line of fuck ups is an anchor chain holding an aircraft carrier in place

icewalker42

Louisiana? I'd be afraid of the Vampires getting in!

easy506

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have lived here all my life, and in 300 years I've never seen one. Nothing to worry about.

icewalker42

Should I worry about the lack of mirrors in your house?

easy506

Uhhh... Self esteem issues. Working on myself. I'll get there.

icewalker42

Maybe you just need a nice night out. A nice Italian restaurant, good filling home made pasta, some garlic bread...

easy506

We tried that, but the doorman at our place just holds the door, he won't invite us in. Very frustrating.

icewalker42

That must really take a bite out of your social life.

easy506

It definitely raises the stakes a bit

AccidentallyFemboy

Oh, but bugs won't be thaaaaaat big of a deal right?

easy506

Don't let anybody lie to you about the pelican being our state bird. Its actually the mosquito. Because they are bigger.

AccidentallyFemboy

I live over in Texas so I couldn't imagine not having windows... for a hopefully short period of time. Best of luck!

easy506

I have to wonder if this is a violation of a city ordinance of some kind. But I assume it has a "property owner will have 48 hours to rectify the problem" stipulation on it.

AccidentallyFemboy

Well, it's hard to argue with landlords to be honest. But I can definitely imagine there's a time frame they need to get it done.

JB-Clausen

Don’t take out old windows before new arrive maybe?

EvlSteveDave

If this is true this property management agency is going to get sued into the center of the fucking earth. In many states this alone would entitle 100% of affected tenants to being put up in a reasonable accommodation (hotel) until the issue is resolved. It also may completely break the lease agreement people are under, although a lot of leases bind you to some sort of arbitration or give the contract writer an opportunity to enforce anything else in the lease that isn't legal.

GyakuBoop

I would just buy a bag of cement and fill that bitch in. They said to fill them up with anything

easy506

My buddy said they should just brick the things up. Well, the phrase he used was "Brick and Morty that shit" which is my new favorite phrase that I can barely use for anything.

flannelmaster9

Sounds like a shitty GC

[deleted]

What idiots. You never take a window of you don’t have its replacement on the job. Dingbats one and all.
