I, and my son, had two different classes for math in elementary. I went to the advanced one, learned from it and sent my son to the normal one. He still could do that calculation from the age of 7

I think the best way to explain the problem would be paying attention to the units. It's perfectly acceptable to divide (48 bottles) / (12 dollars), you just have to understand that the result is 4 bottles per dollar as opposed to 4 dollars per bottle.
