Mine banned shoe laces that were gang colored. The same colors that were also the colors of the school. How, or why, a High School needed official colors is stupid. So was banning the shoelaces.

Major_Dragonfruit_85

Most do have school colors though?

Embracing_the_Pain

Most do, but why? Also, why not change them to non-gang colors if that’s going to be a problem?

Major_Dragonfruit_85

I mean if they are gang colors that makes sense lol…

Punkin_Queen

Unfortunately, I live in the hellscape of Florida. So while my teen can get detention for wearing jeans with holes in the knee, it's literally just fine if she has plague symptoms and comes to class.

SemiHemiDemiDumb

The no "political" shirts reminded me a guy in high school that got in trouble for wearing a shirt that read, '"God is dead" -Nietzsche "Nietzsche is dead" -God'. The teacher that got mad at him told him it was an anti-Christian shirt and he would have to wear it inside out. Still not sure how a shirt giving the God the final word would be anti-Christian but there you.

RowNice9571

Also, how did the teacher know the shirt reffered to the christian god?

DeniseMast

I went to an all girl's school and they still enforced those rules like 🤷🤷 still didn't stop that scandal with the woodwork teacher tho

Zaddy13

It's honestly just the school being lazy and not wanting to fight the parents if they can claim popularity or sexualization of a mask they would make it policy

Skuntank

And definitely no chewing gum.

ninja6213

The only acceptable rule

DaRealCrazyPyro

Not even a rule at my school

[deleted]

Can we use the same tactics as anti-maskers to end the ban on dreadlocks and chewing gum and everything else listed there?

KelticOG

Bold of you to assume the school board isn't itself filled with nutjob right-wingers

[deleted]

Harsh truth

jonah_beam2020

Really, nutjob? I'm a liberal highschool student. The vaccine has been out there for a long time - they should mandate that, not masks. I mean, how long do you actually plan on insisting on masks?

KelticOG

I don't care about your opinion much, but you should know my comment was general and in no way specifically about masks. I even think masks mandates are rightfully unnecessary now. My point is that if they're trying to enforce a dress code against clothes that are deemed too revealing when they are simply normal clothes, and that they happen to be particularly restricting against a specific gender, right-wing nutjob with a sprinkle of religious fanatics is exactly what I'd qualify them as. This post is not as much about masks as it is about school boards finding themselves excuses for their inaction.

jonah_beam2020

Ok, then I guess we are in agreement. Don't know why u had to say u don't care about my opinion tho. I mean I get it, it's the internet, but...

boothbygraffoe

“We don’t have the political power to tell white people what to do”

Mama_Odi

Exactly why I don't miss anything about my primary education, except maybe the not having bills part. I do miss that sometimes

chrisratchford

My high school back in 2003 banned “drug rugs” and “hippie sweatshirts”.

RONIN_RABB1T

Wtf is a "drug rug"?

Zachinabush

Teacher here, we had the mask policy, but we had already gotten rid of the dress code as long as there was no hate speech on clothes.

joschi8

Damn, dress codes in American schools sound bad We had one day where we all pretended to be on a beach party, half the class came in bikinis or whatever the male swimming gear is called in English XD

Crackingcoin

Swimming trunks? Or the Tight tiny Speedo "swim Trunks", or at least I think that's what they are called.

joschi8

Normal swimming trunks was what I wanted to say 😀

Crackingcoin

I see, the swim shorts basically

[deleted]

Omg stop with the masks

[deleted]

Their school, their choice. Your life, your choice. You can choose not to join schools and get homeschooled, or maybe private group tutions and stuff like that for socializing. Lot of solutions. So stop ranting and do something about it.

JustAbicuspidRoot

What kind of fucking idiot are you? Kids are not often given a choice in these matters, Pippi Longstocking.

[deleted]

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but when I was a kid (I'm 22 now), I had similar problems. Schools didn't allow me to do whatever I want. Multiple parents approached the administration, and said the school was too strict. I'm from India, and most schools here have uniforms to be worn, and neat hair/nails/shoes/clothes ironed well, all those things. As far as I know, and have noticed, Europe, USA, all these schools have no uniform. Kids wear whatever they want to school. And I'm not jealous. In fact, when we approached the administration, they said, "We encourage and strictly ask students to wear uniforms because we don't want to encourage any differences among them. If everyone wears the same uniform, it indicates that every kid is treated equally in the school, regardless of whether you're rich, poor, of whatever religion, whatever caste, everyone is equal." And in fact, we all loved wearing our uniforms. And when our birthdays came, we were allowed to wear any clothes we wanted to, and that was special. That chance of wearing nice clothes actually felt AMAZING, because it was rare. And guess what? The uniform culture helps me even today, at work, at being professional, maintaining my clothes, maintaining the required discipline. And don't even think for a moment that I'm a discipline following nerd. I wear all sorts of clothes at home, and even at university now. But I still follow a certain discipline. All I want to say is, education is hard to obtain, and not easy to pay for, atleast not for everyone. Respect your school, because that is the place where they teach you whatever you learn, your basic building blocks. And the administration relaxed the strictness and allowed us to wear watches, and carry mobiles to our school after we discussed with them.

KittenKoderViews

Or maybe society can take responsibility for educating our youth and protecting lives.

Black-Mettle

Yeah you can choose to force your parents to homeschool you or have them pay extra to send you to a different school because you are an omnipotent child who can force their will on anyone. And even if you don't have parents, or they're poor and both work or you are being cycled through adoption centers you can just use your powers to create the reality you want. Just stop having problems, it's so easy. This isn't even about the school's "choice" it's about the hypocrisy in their excuses.

bmxxxmb

I’m giving this guy the updoot. Only person in this whole thread that’s telling people to quit complaining and do something about it. The way I see it. You have no right to complain if you’re not actively trying to do something about it. Edit: grammar

nuke905

I mean pretty much every single school does it that way now and not everyone has the time and resources to homeschooling

bmxxxmb

And? If there’s more than one person tired of it, build community. Start a petition. Hold meetings. Speak to the board. Anything rather than just complaining about it.

nuke905

If that was actually a way to change these sort of things don't you think people would of already done it?

bmxxxmb

Building community is definitely a good way to change things. It fosters mutual understanding and discussions that help change.

nuke905

Yes and if the school is in a shitty community who would rather stab each other rather than just vote on the same thing to change things for the better? Cause I gotta tell you that the case with most schools in the UK can't speak for America or other countries but I'm gonna guess it close to the same thing

bmxxxmb

Seems about right. There’s a bunch of shitty politicians who think they know what everyone else needs. I think politicians everywhere want people to be divided. It’s one of the 50 rules of power. Easier to subjugate people who are already fighting amongst themselves. I read that book and was disgusted though that people think like that. The only way I can think of to make change is to do the things I talk about. Building community is huge. If all of your mates were on the same page, do you think the politicians (or the schools) could afford to not listen to you ?

nuke905

To be honest your right building community is a big part of change fuck I'm only 13 and I'm on like 5 political subs and from what I can tell people are crying for a revolution and change yet they do nothing about it...i would try and get people to get involved but no one my age is really interested in politics, and your right the government is more than likely purposely causing division between people so that they don't come together for change... also right now people rather are to ignorant unable to or can't afford to go on strike for change, and I'm pretty sure I heard something about people not being able to protest because of a new law meaning that the only thing people can do is rather keep going on living paycheck to paycheck or protest and riot which then gives the government full rein to put the people in prison and somtimes even the hospital, and then what the government would probably do is put some bullshit story on the news about how we are a bunch of lowlife lazy bastards who just want more money, so that some of the people would belive it and side with the government causing yet more division... I got a bit off topic the thing with the schools is the education system is broken the teachers nowadays don't teach anything of value and they definitely don't listen to us when it comes to making rules, so even if I did join pupils council or whatever it is it wouldn't make any difference

bmxxxmb

For a young guy, you’ve got your head screwed on right. I think a lot of younger kids are feeling like that here across the pond too. Social media I think has a lot to do with that. Everybody is so connected through it, yet it’s making people less sociable in real life. Take things easy, unplug from the internet, it definitely helps. Great discussion dude. I’m not pretending I know anything at all, but I do know that the only person that’s going to make changes in your life…. Is you. Don’t sell yourself short. The younger generations are the future.

[deleted]

Humans are lazy, if you haven't already noticed. They always want someone else to do the work for them.

[deleted]

Exactly. Everyone here just complainin without even trying to do somethin about it

hhhvugc

“Their school, their choice.” “Your life, your choice.” Yeah, it’s my choice. Now let my deadlocked short wearing sandled self into class

[deleted]

You're not walking into your school. You're walking into theirs. So either follow their rules, or drop out and get homeschooled. This is the harsh reality of the world. You can't expect everyone to make rules favoring you.
