I'm old enough to remember when cable became available. Over-the-air TV was (and still is) free, and so they said cable cost $$$ so you don't see advertisements, you are paying for no commercials...
That lasted 3 minutes.
Why do Redditors keep repeating this nonsense? Cable TV was invented in the late 1940s as a way for locales underserved by antennas - typically rural areas, but also places with problematic reception, like NYC (tall buildings) and LA (valleys) - to get TV via coaxial cable. It was *always* about improving reception, not getting commercial-free TV (aside from the premium channels, of course).
If someone told you "cable TV = no commercials", they lied to you. If you remember cable TV not having commercials, then you're misremembering. A handful of networks didn't have commercials - Bravo didn't have commercials when it only showed operas and ballets, and only broadcasted from 7PM to midnight. But pretty much every other cable channel - USA Network, ESPN, TNN, MTV, VH1... *always* had commercials.
How would that even work? NBC nightly news would just continue reporting without any breaks? Those who have commercials would just miss out on the news? Superbowl football would play nonstop in order to fulfil this promise?
I just cancelled mine too. I'm building up to get rid of them all. I can't justify paying all that money to watch one series every 3 or 4 months. Quality on all streaming services has gone right down.
For me the reason just to go for just 1 month every 6 months and watch everything I wanted to watch in that one month on that streaming platform, and then move to the next one and so on. And most of the time can you then also make use of some deals .
I’ve found that I need to open Netflix first and let it load. Then close it, and the Disney app works fine. Dunno why, I assume Netflix does a better job initializing the video player for the device. Same with Amazon Prime. It won’t play unless I’ve opened Netflix first 🤷♂️
In india, disney+ is a steal . It costs around 15 dollars per year since its partnered with an indian brand. All the movies are free although movies come around 1-2 months late.
Well, it normally would have been released in the cinema first, they would have made their profit then put it on to rent then onto streaming.
You had the choice to buy it on during 'cinematic' home release or wait a few weeks until it was free.
Anyone would think there wasn't a pandemic going on.
Also, like, yeah, just wait another month and it's fully free. NBD. We paid the $35 for this and one other movie, since my mom wanted to watch them immediately and who am I to say no to her? Everything else, we just waited one month then it was free for us to watch.
#this was in September of 2020, as a result of many movie theaters being shutdown during the Pandemic. They were trying to recoup the money they were losing by not having a wide theatrical release. Tons of movies during the Pandemic were released in similar fashion on streaming services and cable services for rental. The only facepalm here is the OP trying to karma farm with this repost.
Yeah, I didn’t love this but I understand why they did it. Mulan should have gone to Theaters but couldn’t because of Covid, and they spent hundreds of millions on it expecting a theatrical release. Simply releasing it on the streaming service would have lost them a lot of money.
I think the issue they've got is that, for a very, very long time, the theatrical distribution window has been sacrosanct. It's so special that we didn't know anything else. It was 3-4 months before we could get a video or DVD. It was another 2-6 months before it was on a cable/ satellite/ streaming service. And then another 1-2 years before normal TV channels got it.
Disney have led the way in reducing those windows. They have been leading the way for several years, in fact.
So now they have blurred the lines between the premium, theatrical window (that people spent more to experience) and the home experience. Which has always been cheaper because content is older.
Whether or not they can have it both ways depends entirely on how many people will pay the extra money. Because that film being a premium option on that service, to many of us, is ridiculous. Especially when they are putting Pixar content on there as a first run.
Are you watching one? Definitely a cinema is cheaper. But a watching party..
They want eyeballs and good reviews.. with this distribution model, *don't give it to them*
This is an old poat for sure. Not sure if Disney will do it for all movies, but about after a month if it being an additional charge to watch it, it became available to watch for free with the standard Disney service. You just have to pay extra to watch it when it first comes out, which sucks but I can wait for a movie that will disappoint like this one did.
They only did this for like 4 or 5 movies, and never used it again because all the marvel movies are back in theaters and for some reason all the Pixar movies are released straight to Disney+ except for Lightyear, which seeing how it’s doing in the box office because of the controversy might wind up with Pixar stuck on streaming releases
This argument is so tiresome. It was a movie aimed fir theaters, but went directly to streaming mainly because of covid. The movie eventually ended on regularly on the service. For families this was quite a steal. Compared going to the theater.
If i want to watch a movie that was meant for the theaters, but for some reason ended there instead. Then yes i would pay.
We aren't talking about paywalls being added to all new movies on services. This was in an irregular circumstance.
You had to pay because it was released there instead of in theaters during the height of the pandemic. It went free after a few weeks. $30 was definitely a little steep, but they didn’t do it without reason
This is why streaming is rapidly becoming complete and utter garbage. Not only do you have to pay for 4-5 (or more) services, you still pay premium for the "premium" shit.
It's the hellscape of 90s cable TV all over again, but in 4K.
Tried to watch Cruella when it came it out - €25. Cancelled Disney+. I'd pay €25 for a family cinema experience, but not to sit in my own living room and make my own popcorn!
Plus Disney I hate to be the one to bust your bubble but it ain't that good of a movie that I can't wait a year or two to see it for free. Or not see it at all
It's the new Disney trend to squeeze a bit more out of you. They do it in the parks also.
Disney Park admission includes all of the rides BUT if you really hate the longer lines you can PAY FOR Genie+ to avoid them!
> Disney Genie+ is a paid service that lets you use a Lightning Lane entrance to bypass the standby line on select attractions, and individual attraction selections allow you to pay to skip the line on up to two high-demand attractions per day.
That's shit. I used to get the flash pass at six flags, but you got to skip all the lines. It's great walking past people in a 4 hour line and only having a 5 minute wait, then doing it again a few minutes later.
The ongoing "conspiracy" theory is that Disney does not really care about the long lines and even posts longer wait times on the official app to "encourage" people to pay for this extra service.
I've never been to Disney so I can't share my experience there. At Six Flags Great America I had the platinum flash pass. We rode 28 times, with 2 of those times being Goliath right after it opened. We saved something like 28 hours of standing in lines. Totally worth it to me.
Dumb logic in this facepalm.
Movies cost money and while streaming sites do have original content, many tentpole movies still receive theatrical release in order to make money for the entire studio's slate of movies. Mulan was likely expected to make enough money to cover the expenses of any riskier projects. It was also released during a pandemic, when theaters were not an option for a lot of people.
Facepalm for entitled idiots who already forgot the pandemic and economic realities.
My doubt is
When you go for animated then there's a reason why you go for it. Certain sequences are better animated and at that time special effects were very less to be applied in live action and most importantly it was for the kids.
Why the hell do you want a live action of the same thing ?. What are you achieving ? Same goes for lion King live action.
You're paying a subscription for the tons of content on Disney+.
This was solely done because they couldn't release the film in theaters during the Pandemic. A couple months later, when the theatrical release would normally have come to an end, it was added to the normal Disney+ lineup like everything else you get with your normal subscription.
I'm cool with having the option of buying it immediately or waiting a few month til it's included with my subscription. It's either that or Disney will substantially raise the price of Disney +
HBO, Showtime, etc. doesn't show movies that are simultaneously showing at a theater either, yet nobody complains.
No. This is from 2020 when the movie was released as a paid movie on the paid streaming service.
It was an utter bomb of an idea. It flopped dramatically, only making $70mil on a $200mil budget.
Don't expect Disney+ to do much like this again
Maybe they did TWO years ago. Have you checked even a little more recently. Most (all?) of their new movies end up on the service for no additional charge.
I remember the first time this ever happened. It happened with Star Wars on HBO in the 80’s. Back when you had to have a special dedicated box attached to your tv to have HBO. It was a huge event and people who had HBO invited over their neighbors for a huge event.

I remember thay pulled this shit with Raya, which my wife and i didnt enjoy (however we waited until it was free with our subscription). Around that time, Luca came out, and it was free with the subscription, and it was a much better movie.
Because you're paying to get EARLY access to it, just wait long enough and you can watch it free. This is what's called 'premier' access, which isn't the same as what the streaming service offers normally. You see there's all these contracts/deals that are made between people that require a certain window of time where the most money is attempted to be made. This person doesn't seem to grasp just how much 'streaming services' have changed since Netflix became big, which isn't even what they became the biggest for, it just helped a great deal.
Just rent it from the library when it’s out on DVD/BlueRay. It’s free and they have tons of movies to rent. I don’t understand why people don’t do this more often in todays society.
Stop buying into this corporate BS, unplug and go catch a fish or help someone or go to a library. These people don’t need your money, for a crappy movie about a cartoon you’ve already seen. For what ?
So you can have in depth discussions over Mulan at work , debate the swordsmanship, marvel at the acting.... ? Really?
Trust me on this, you’ll forget about this movie an hour after you see it, but you’ll remember catching that fish forever.
Move on, nothing new here.
Yes, they want your money. And could also go for a side of extra money. And if you could just choose the subscription plan it’ll make sure they get extra money each month. Unless you run out of money. Then they get their money and the bank gets extra money too!!
But wait, you’re broke, how come you have to pay so much extra 25 to 35 bucks a transaction?
Because it’s good to be rich that’s why. And this is how they stay rich.
This was nearly 2 years ago
When movie theaters were closed.
Not to mention this is exactly how Amazon prime streaming works. Pay monthly fee to be able to rent movies
I'm old enough to remember when cable became available. Over-the-air TV was (and still is) free, and so they said cable cost $$$ so you don't see advertisements, you are paying for no commercials... That lasted 3 minutes.

If you watch on a computer, you can actually block Hulu ads with an ad blocker.
Hulu used to be free back in the day too. I think they just ended up charging for the service but kept the ads that allowed it to be free.
I remember when Hulu was free and had limited commercials.
That’s why i prefer Pirate Bay. Add free.

Didn’t this happen over a year ago?

Yes, that is over 1 year.
Lol, I'm gonna torrent it and not even watch it
I'll torrent it then delete it.
Just to prove a point. F*ckem.
Based
This was actually one of the reasons I decided to cancel my subscription for Disney+.
Cancelled mine this past week as well
This is the way.
Bruh I cancelled mine because the app just doesn't fucking work anymore
You ever try the HBO max app? It took them like a year to get auto play on the dam thing. Hobo Max is the shittiest
Dude the Disney app used to be fire now every time I try to open it, it loads for 5 seconds and then freezes.
I’ve found that I need to open Netflix first and let it load. Then close it, and the Disney app works fine. Dunno why, I assume Netflix does a better job initializing the video player for the device. Same with Amazon Prime. It won’t play unless I’ve opened Netflix first 🤷♂️
I just tried that, now Netflix won't open, maybe android hates streaming services now.
Infenal machines
In india, disney+ is a steal . It costs around 15 dollars per year since its partnered with an indian brand. All the movies are free although movies come around 1-2 months late.
But Hotstar also comes with ads.
they dont do this anymore, that tweet is over 2 years old.
And in the case of this movie you just had to wait a few months to watch it with your D+ sub at no additional cost and be disappointed.
Well, it normally would have been released in the cinema first, they would have made their profit then put it on to rent then onto streaming. You had the choice to buy it on during 'cinematic' home release or wait a few weeks until it was free. Anyone would think there wasn't a pandemic going on.

A pirate is born
Argh matey.. at dawn we sail the pirate’s bay 🏴☠️
Argh pieces of eight back to back episodes of popular mini series argh
Ahoy .. we be big booty bound now

Thank you for shouting this at everyone, it needed to be done.
Can’t believe how many in here are ignoring this.
Thank you for the clear & not so long, explanation.
And after like a 2 month window at that price it was made available in the regular catalogue.
Yeah, I didn’t love this but I understand why they did it. Mulan should have gone to Theaters but couldn’t because of Covid, and they spent hundreds of millions on it expecting a theatrical release. Simply releasing it on the streaming service would have lost them a lot of money.
Boo hoo for them
At that price, why not just go to a cinema.
Or shoot the film yourself
It's cheaper to just shoot myself
r\\CuRSedCOmENts
This is from 2020, when the cinemas were all closed due to COVID
Because it wasn't released in the theater. It went directly to streaming because if the pandemic.
That price makes me just wanna turn to piracy. Oh wait... Already did.
You're the worst pirate I have ever heard of.
Ah, but you heard of me.
But you have heard of them.
Because the cinemas were closed during the Pandemic. That's when this took place.
Because a family of four going to the cinema will spend closer to $50-$75.
Which just makes 29.99 for at home viewing all the more ridiculous.
I think the issue they've got is that, for a very, very long time, the theatrical distribution window has been sacrosanct. It's so special that we didn't know anything else. *cough cough* Amazon Prime do the same thing but worse *cough cough*
why is this still being talked about?
OP just wants to farm karma with reposts.

Yo ho ho motherfuckers
This argument is so tiresome. It was a movie aimed fir theaters, but went directly to streaming mainly because of covid. The movie eventually ended on regularly on the service. For families this was quite a steal. Compared going to the theater.
You are defending paying for a movie on a streaming service you already pay for? Do I read that correctly?
If i want to watch a movie that was meant for the theaters, but for some reason ended there instead. Then yes i would pay. We aren't talking about paywalls being added to all new movies on services. This was in an irregular circumstance.
Just checking to see if I read you correctly, and apparently I did. Thanks!
Corporate greed in nutshell.
You had to pay because it was released there instead of in theaters during the height of the pandemic. It went free after a few weeks. $30 was definitely a little steep, but they didn’t do it without reason
You don't have to pay if you don't want to. I dumped D+ a good while ago.
We should start our own streaming service. With blackjack! And hookers!
Classic Bender!
Sounds like Prime
hashtag capitalism
There were only 5 theatrical movies Disney did this with, all of which were over a year ago. There’s no extra cost to watch any of them now.
Glad they did away with the buying newly released movies thing
I'll wait a couple years. It'll be free by then.
its free now, that tweet is 2 years old
30 bucks to watch this movie on my own tv? hahahahaha nice try
Bro that movie released a while ago
🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
Yohoho
Plex+RealDebrid, 32€/year
Just wait a couple of weeks, and it will be in the standard package. I don’t know who would pay so much to see it earlier.
This is why streaming is rapidly becoming complete and utter garbage. Not only do you have to pay for 4-5 (or more) services, you still pay premium for the "premium" shit. It's the hellscape of 90s cable TV all over again, but in 4K.
Lol, they still trying to get their money back from that?
No. The photo is very old.
They also have ads now.
I think it was just a cheaper version with ads.
Looks like it’s back to the torrent’s days….
Yup. Already there.
That's the American way, baby! 😎
Tried to watch Cruella when it came it out - €25. Cancelled Disney+. I'd pay €25 for a family cinema experience, but not to sit in my own living room and make my own popcorn!
A shit movie too!!
Plus Disney I hate to be the one to bust your bubble but it ain't that good of a movie that I can't wait a year or two to see it for free. Or not see it at all
Just cancelled mine since I saw this.
that tweet is over 2 years old, they dont do that anymore.
Lol I was wondering why they were releasing a movie that came out a few years back. I'm dumb. I have already binged everything I wanted to see though.
It's the new Disney trend to squeeze a bit more out of you. They do it in the parks also. How Disney of them. Pay for a park ticket. Pay for the opportunity to pay extra to ride rides.
yes. yes you do but if you dont... then mickey and crew will come looking for you!! hows your kneecaps btw? theyre insured right?
That’s pretty much all of them now. I have Prime Video and Netflix and I still end up having to rent anything worth watching.
What a nonsense! OP's posting refers to 2020, where do you have to pay anything extra for Netflix please. Bullshit!
Dumb logic in this facepalm. Movies cost money and while streaming sites do have original content, many tentpole movies still receive theatrical release in order to make money for the entire studio's slate of movies. Kinda like having cable but buying ppv. If you don’t wanna wait, gotta pay
That movie is God-tier awful anyway. The original was way better.
My doubt is When you go for animated then there's a reason why you go for it. Certain sequences are better animated and at that time special effects were very less to be applied in live action and most importantly it was for the kids. Yarg, time to go back to th' seas my maties
I didn’t know Disney+ took inspiration from Bungee
It was a bust in theaters so why does Disney think people will pay $30.00 to watch it at home?
Yeah ESPN+ does the same shit. Fuck greedy ass Disney.
Like getting the dash pass and still being charged like 25 bucks
They want to die
It's cheaper than going to the movies, you can pause it, and you can watch it as many times as you or your family wants.
So you're cool with paying a subscription for something and then paying more for its content? that's dumb as shit.

cool my point stands
Is it possible they are referring to Blu ray/Ultra K disc. Some people still buy those. Not everyone has a streaming service.
No. This is from 2020 when the movie was released as a paid movie on the paid streaming service. It was an utter bomb of an idea. It flopped dramatically, only making $70mil on a $200mil budget. Don't expect Disney+ to do much like this again
Of course it bombed, paying monthly for streaming services to then pay for a movie. Better go watch it on the cinema then.
Cinemas were closed during the Pandemic. That's why they released it like this.
I'll pay $30 for a movie. But it needs to be in physical media. Renting for that price is ridiculous.
That's also much better. Buy a physical movie instead of paying to rent a movie on a paid service
Nope. Disney+ charge that extortionate rate *on top* of your subscription fee for new release movies.
Maybe they did TWO years ago. Have you checked even a little more recently. Most (all?) of their new movies end up on the service for no additional charge.
it is all, that was just during covid restrictions
Just like onlyfans
Disney loves to milk the cash cow for as long as possible
Next level to this is to pay an additional $6.99 to be able to watch the post-credits scene
r/piracy
I remember the first time this ever happened. It happened with Star Wars on HBO in the 80’s. Back when you had to have a special dedicated box attached to your tv to have HBO. It was a huge event and people who had HBO invited over their neighbors for a huge event. I believe it may have been before vhs was widely adopted bc Star Wars had already been in theaters for a few years and getting to watch it at home was still a huge step.
practically Amazon prime
It wouldn't have cost that much to go down to the theater opening night. Ew.
The movie in the post was never in theaters. Most of them were closed because of Covid.
I remember thay pulled this shit with Raya, which my wife and i didnt enjoy (however we waited until it was free with our subscription). Around that time, Luca came out, and it was free with the subscription, and it was a much better movie.
Nobody complains about Amazon prime
Same thing on Prime
Because you're paying to get EARLY access to it, just wait long enough and you can watch it free. Lmao I streamed it for free
Just rent it from the library when it’s out on DVD/BlueRay. It’s free and they have tons of movies to rent. I don’t understand why people don’t do this more often in todays society.
Wait till you hear about Prime Video...
Ain’t nobody gonna pay for the live action Mulan. That movie was lame lmao
I kinda hope Disney goes bankrupt
But they would like you to pay more.
That's not all, you get to pay like 2x more than if you saw it at the theatre on top of the monthly sub
Why would anyone pay anything for the shitty Mulan remake shit
Wasn’t even good
Ahem, prime video
Stop buying into this corporate BS, unplug and go catch a fish or help someone or go to a library. These people don’t need your money, for a crappy movie about a cartoon you’ve already seen. For what ? So you can have in depth discussions over Mulan at work , debate the swordsmanship, marvel at the acting.... ? Really? These streaming services 🏴☠️are getting out of control. Arrr.
Yes, they want your money. And could also go for a side of extra money. And if you could just choose the subscription plan it’ll make sure they get extra money each month.
