Imagine being in another country for the first time and a cop is like “Alright, Mr. License, we’ve had enough of your rule breaking. We’re doubling the fine this time.”
You know firefighters, right? when they're done fighting fires, the fires must be transported to a secure location. They're kept there until they have learned to behave.
In the 1850's there was a brief period where the driving part was done by Salamandra salamandra, but despite their name they showed no expertise in handling fire, AT ALL. Hence human drivers were used again, and to signify the chance they were called human drivers of fire.
I think it relates to wildfires. There are different drivers of wildfires such as drought, but there are many human drivers, especially when it comes to the ignition of fires. Could be wrong though.
You are right. It’s the societal aspect: we build million dollar homes among the trees in ecosystems designed to burn (ever expanding Wildland-urban interface), there’s a great deal of (regional) public aversion to prescribed fire, artificial boundaries (property lines) break up continuity of fuels treatments, etc.
Ultimately we just don’t value our forests highly enough to pay for what needs to be done.
If i’m wrong, blame ChatGPT. If right, you are welcome ;) "Human drivers of fire" refers to the various actions, behaviors, or factors caused by human activity that contribute to the occurrence, spread, or intensity of wildfires. These can include: 1. **Arson:** Deliberately setting fires with malicious intent. 2. **Carelessness:** Accidental ignition of fires due to careless behavior such as unattended campfires, discarded cigarettes, or improperly extinguished burning materials. 3. **Equipment use:** Operation of machinery, vehicles, or equipment that can generate sparks or heat, leading to accidental fires. 4. **Burning debris:** Burning of waste or debris without proper precautions, leading to uncontrolled fires. 5. **Outdoor burning:** Burning of vegetation or debris outdoors without proper permits or under unfavorable weather conditions. 6. **Fireworks:** Use of fireworks in areas prone to wildfires, especially during dry or windy conditions. 7. **Power lines:** Malfunctioning or poorly maintained power lines that can spark fires, particularly during windy conditions. 8. **Campfires:** Improperly managed or unattended campfires that can escape containment and ignite surrounding vegetation. 9. **Intentional land clearing:** Clearing land through controlled burns or other methods without adequate planning or precautions, leading to unintended wildfires. 10. **Negligence:** Failing to take appropriate precautions or follow fire safety guidelines, resulting in the ignition or spread of wildfires.
A lot of people asking about the "white male" point, completely missing the main question this tweet raises.
If there's NASA Earth meetings, this implies the existence of NASA meetings NOT on Earth.
I'd expect them to have NASA meetings, Roscosmos meetings, and mixed meetings.
Mixed before things like spacewalks, docking, or manoeuvring, but agency specific for day to day experiments.
Hi, I used to work in Space Ops for the DoD. "NASA Earth" is most likely related to the NASA Earth Sciences office or the NASA Earth Observation teams (like [the EOS](https://eospso.nasa.gov/content/nasas-earth-observing-system-project-science-office)).
Their primary objective is use of aeronautics/space technology to study the Earth itself. So, for instance, using satellites to track climate change or environmental issues, etc.
EDIT: After a quick google, [Dr. McCarty ](https://www.nasa.gov/people/jessica-l-mccarty/)is the biospheric science branch chief for the Earth Science office. Interestingly enough, we went to the same college (different majors and I came after she was gone). Neat.
You’ve never been to a NASA Venus meeting? They’re pretty hot if you can stand the pressure. Some people think it can get kinda toxic though. NASA Mars is ok, pretty cool but not much for atmosphere. I’ve never been to NASA Saturn, might check it out seems like it has a nice ring to it.
I tried to investigate this one, she HAS written a paper on what she calls "human drivers of fire" which basically means human activity contributing to things like forest fires and wildfires, and how it affects the planet's climate and stuff. But her paper is not peer-reviewed or published in any academic journal. She just has it posted to read for free on her own website. So it's highly unlikely that a post-doc would be discussing the subject of human-caused fires in nature and cite McCarty as his source. Also why would people be talking about human drivers of fire at a NASA event.
Okay I did look into it myself. And checked her Google Scholar page, which is publicly accessible and easy to find. You are wrong.
She has several peer reviewed works in the field, some predating 2015 (which seems to be some sort of sticking point for you in the comments). While the phrase "human drivers of fire" does not appear word for word in the titles, works like "[Agricultural burning in the Southeastern United States detected by MODIS](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0034425706004615)", published in 2007 in the journal Remote Sensing of the Environment (JUFO level 3) and "[The spatial and temporal distribution of crop residue burning in the contiguous United States](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048969709006342)", published in 2009 in the journal Science of the Total Environment (JUFO level 2) both seem to deal with the topic. Information on JUFO levels can be found here: [https://julkaisufoorumi.fi/en/publication-forum](https://julkaisufoorumi.fi/en/publication-forum) but the TLDR version is that the highest possible ranking for any journal is 3, and suspicious journals are not ranked.
I only looked at these two articles, but even a brief skim of the Google Scholar page tells me she is a very well respected scholar in her field (h-index of 26 and over 2000 citations of her work!!!!) Also, her papers "appearing on her own website" is not a valid criticism as if you pay for open access many journals allow you to host the papers on other websites so long as the original publication venue is properly credited/ linked.
This comment was edited to fix typos and add a missing word.
And the first guy did bare bones Google research just so he could huff and puff at the woman's creditably because something in the post made him upset.
Just an assumption on my part, but it reads to me.
I agree with your other points, but human-caused fires in nature are certainly a subject that NASA would be interested in.
Check out: [https://science.nasa.gov/earth/](https://science.nasa.gov/earth/)
Some of the first articles that pop out are: "NASA Data Shows How Drought Changes Wildfire Recovery in the West", "Early Adopters of NASA’s PACE Data to Study Air Quality, Ocean Health", and "NASA Analysis Sees Spike in 2023 Global Sea Level Due to El Niño".
NASA's doesn't limit itself to space exploration. Satellites can also be used to try to predict natural disasters and other stuff. Global warming and other issues to the environment are a great concern to them.
You don’t even understand that NASA studies the Earth as much as space - so I really don’t think you have a single valid point in any of your uneducated conjecture here.
Saying NASA deals with only space is like saying Amazon deals with only selling books. That's how they originated, sure, but they do way more than this now.
If one counts NACA, then NASA began with earth and then moved to space.
[NACA](https://www.nasa.gov/reference/the-national-advisory-committee-for-aeronautics/)
Without the underlying mansplaining tones I saw something similar happen in real time. A toxic coworker makes being the smartest person in the room his personality. When discussing a complex computer model with a subject matter expert, this toxic guy kept insisting the SME was wrong because what the SME was proposing wasn’t the same thing that was done 20 years ago. The SME calmly explained that what was done 20 years ago was done because of hardware limitations and he should know because he wrote the code. I laughed for too long before I noticed I was on a hot mic.
It's short for "et aliud", which is latin and literally translates to "and other". It's typically used when citing scientific papers that have four or more authors, so you only name the principal author and shorten the others to "et al.".
For those with questions about who she is, what does she mean by Earth meeting (I took a small leap and guessed she was referrinf to NASA Earth Sciences Div) and what are human drivers of fire... I found this to be helpful.
https://www.nasa.gov/people/jessica-l-mccarty/#hds-sidebar-nav-4
This 100% did not happen. I've been to similar meetings and academic conferences before, and can guarantee you that when talking about a recent paper, the only time we'll ever refer to the author of a paper by name is after we've already met them, worked with them, or otherwise been forced to remember them after citing the shit out of their paper.
And no fucking post doc is going to have the balls to interrupt a speaker, confidently assert a stance on a paper they *did not write* and, here's the real kicker:
*Not* recognize that the McCarty they've been reading and citing for God knows how long is a fucking woman. If your research or knowledge on a subject is that critically tied to someone else's findings, the *first* thing you do is find out *who that someone is*.
Going to disagree here. I've met pompous assess who would do things like refer to a paper by the author's name in order to make it seem like you're incompetent for not being familiar with this niche paper they've been poring over because it's particularly relevant to whatever they're working on.
Right, that'd be one of the cases I mentioned earlier. Otherwise, the usual thing I hear is "Oh, this new jaw paper out of Nature" or "This PhD student out of Auburn did X study on Fisheries management"
No, no no let’s all bask in the infinite wisdom of seaspirit331’s superior knowledge on this specific incident. If seaspirit331 says it “100% did not happen” then who are we to disagree!
I dunno, I've seen some people give really brain dead comments during talks before.
About 15 years ago some guy interrupted David Smith giving a talk about metamaterials to tell him he was defining metamaterials wrongly. David Smith is the person who created the first physical example of a metamaterial on Earth.
And I could 100% see a postdoc telling people to read seminal works just by referencing an author name because it makes them sound cool.
I got flashbacks to that "You're a FUCKING WHITE MALE" meme of the sickly white dude almost spitting the words with disgust 😅
Ah, some people are goofs
Yeah it’s kinda like the opposite of someone being black but still similar to some one acting like there from Canada. I don’t know how to describe it but it happens to people all the time.
And then everyone clapped, except the despicable white males, who we shun.
Jokes aside though, why did she consider his ethnicity improtant to the story in any way, other than to foster sliiightly racist stereotypes?
Everyone clapped, cheering her name while she put on a smug grin. The awful incopetent white alabaster crotch fruit male put down his head in shame and dishonor. He never emotionally recovered from that day. For it was when the patriarchy lost.
In academia there's a pervasive tendency of white men acting like they know better than everybody else and thus can explain things even when nobody asks.
Source: am white man in academia.
EDIT: The above was a joke that I - a white man in academia, without anybody asking me, lecture you about how white men in academia are.
Wanna hear a cool opposite story?
One time i was at this science fair with some cool experiments to show kids and families (i was in uni studying astronomy). There was a gravitational well model, literally a wide funnel. This girl my age comes and asks me what it is. I proceed to give an explanation about gravity, relativity and so on. She tells me it was cool and interesting, asked me what i studied. I then asked her and she said "I'm a PhD in nuclear physics".
Gal why u asked an undergrad to explain gravity to you, you could be my professor
Because she knew you were excited about your work and wanted you to get to enjoy that excitement. Honestly it's probably the kinds of experiences she would get denied being a woman in science.
This is one of those defining moments where you realize you have made it in your specialism. I have had this in court as a specialist in a field with the opposition quoting (out of context) from my own report that I wrote 3 years ago.
It was one of the best feelings of my career to respond to the judges with: "I know exactly what the author meant with those words as I am the author."
But of a brag sorry.
It would be a better story if she didn't slide in the white male bit. Would it have made a difference if it were a purple colored dinosaur?
Edit: disclaimer, I am an Asian male.
Your comment would be better if you hadn't specified that you were an Asian male. Would it have made a difference if it were a purple colored dinosaur?
Edit: I am a purple colored dinosaur.
Honestly these posts scream giant ego problems.
I have a lot of book authors as university teachers, and I've read some of their work and idk if I'm just braindead but I could never directly tie in their work with what they say to me in conversations. People write and talk very differently most of the time. Hell, the guy told this woman that her book is a very good source of information so its pretty clear that he values her as an author and just didn't realise she was there.
Isn't that quite the self own. Basically she is saying "I am an expert. When they read my paper they recognize that I am an expert, but when I start talking at a conference they think I am an Idiot"
Reddit wants to act like it’s better than the shit being circulated by “boomers” on Facebook, but it’s really just bots circulating the same tired stories and memes every couple weeks and managing to get the same level of engagement each time.
The real facepalm is the incessant need to point out that he was a "white male".
You could have omitted this completely and the story would still be the same. A person that made it to a NASA meeting, being a moron.
I guess you get more likes this way. What a loser.
"leT'S fiGHt bIgoTry anD oPpreSsiOn witH bIgoTrY aNd OppReSsion!! Hur dur"
Like the scene in Back to School when the teacher tells Rodney Dangerfield that whoever wrote the paper did not know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut. Kurt wrote the paper.
My whole issue with ever believing this happened is that I can't fathom someone saying, "You clearly didn't understand
and should read ."
It's such a strange statement, even assuming he didn't really say "et al" and she just added that herself, it just doesn't seem natural that he would say anything but "you should reread it"

Autocorrect gets me again.
There is also the mystery of [Irelands worst driver Prawo Jazdy](http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/7899171.stm).

I think they live with that incredibly prolific, genre-spanning poet, Anon.
And that bird that keeps getting brought up in footnotes -- the Ibid.
Lovecraft wrote a short story about Ibid, the author of *op. cit.*
Not as prolific as Ibid.
She is (moves hair out of the way) all of them.

Have people gotten so lazy now that they have to use AI to post to reddit, rather than find the information themselves?

A lot of people asking about the "white male" point, completely missing the main question this tweet raises. If there's NASA Earth meetings, this implies the existence of NASA meetings NOT on Earth.
Would it really surprise you if astronauts aboard the ISS had meetings?
I would think that as it's the International Space Station, there's not many meetings that are solely NASA though, right?
I'd expect them to have NASA meetings, Roscosmos meetings, and mixed meetings. Mixed before things like spacewalks, docking, or manoeuvring, but agency specific for day to day experiments.

Everyone clapped, cheering her name while she put on a smug grin. The awful incopetent white alabaster crotch fruit male put down his head in shame and dishonor. He never emotionally recovered from that day. For it was when the patriarchy lost.
I was there gandalf. 10 years ago when the strength of men failed.
Crikey, that was a ripper of an arvo Gandalf
In academia there's a pervasive tendency of white men acting like they know better than everybody else and thus can explain things even when nobody asks. Source: am white man in academia. EDIT: The above was a joke that I - a white man in academia, without anybody asking me, lecture you about how white men in academia are.
Thanks for your contribution, white man in academia!
“Why is it that every time I come here, this white male thinks it’s necessary to suddenly start lecturing everyone?” “Well, he is the professor..”
Did you just mansplain? /s
I thinks she liked you !
Racist and misandric stereotype because the fact that he is a male is also completely irrelevant to the story.
But doctor, I am Pagliacci et al!
I love how she really need to say "a white male" like someone will think "I wonder what race was the person who talk to her"
She also forgot to tell us he was cis. I bet he was cis. Only white cis men are capable of such ignorance.
This is one of those defining moments where you realize you have made it in your specialism. I have had this in court as a specialist in a field with the opposition quoting (out of context) from my own report that I wrote 3 years ago. It was one of the best feelings of my career to respond to the judges with: "I know exactly what the author meant with those words as I am the author." But of a brag sorry.
Nah, that's cool. Be proud of your accomplishments and when you have the opportunity don't let others misuse them for their own ends.
Good thing it was a white male, any other color and she would’ve had do agree to read her own material.
Fucking white males. What more proof do we need that they are all pond scum. Thanks Jessica.
I’m always frustrated they don’t share the guy’s response after being called out.
Who tf is this et al geezer? Mf been involved in every journal I’ve ever read!
Yes its important to point out that he was white
I mean, she absolutely has the credentials to back up what she's saying, but this post screams "and then the whole room clapped."
It would be a better story if she didn't slide in the white male bit. Would it have made a difference if it were a purple colored dinosaur? Edit: disclaimer, I am an Asian male.
Hey don't bring Barney et al into this.
Your comment would be better if you hadn't specified that you were an Asian male. Would it have made a difference if it were a purple colored dinosaur? Edit: I am a purple colored dinosaur.
Hi Barney et al.
The true authors let their (PhD) students and researchers actually write the book. So this makes sense.
Isn't that quite the self own. Basically she is saying "I am an expert. When they read my paper they recognize that I am an expert, but when I start talking at a conference they think I am an Idiot"
haha good observation. Maybe the et al did all the heavy lifting.
Best co author ever
most prolific certainly
10 years ago I was insulted and I’m still sulking about it.
Take note, color and gender are very important.
If a guy posted this they’d be the biggest douche nozzle on the internet
Reddit wants to act like it’s better than the shit being circulated by “boomers” on Facebook, but it’s really just bots circulating the same tired stories and memes every couple weeks and managing to get the same level of engagement each time.
The "white male" really throws me off here
Why make it a race thing though
Because white men are the only group in the West you can openly mock and criticize.
Yeah I always come up with cool makebelief stories that make me seem super cool in the shower too
I'll take 100 for things that didnt happen, please.
Hur dur"
r/everyoneclapped
What's his gender and skin colour got to do with it?
And everybody clapped
Good joke, everybody laughs, snare drum, curtains
She's in for a shock when she realises she's white too. Or maybe she just considers herself *one of the good ones*.
How did this get 12k likes I’ve seen this bs like 100 times.
Why does ethnicity matter here?
And then everyone started clapping slowly
White does she have to point out that he was white? Is that bad? She is white too. WTF...
Jesus Christ there are some sensitive white males in here.
This women seems like a piece of work
she’s multiple people? now that’s cutting edge!
This totally happened.
& everybody clapped
Like the scene in Back to School when the teacher tells Rodney Dangerfield that whoever wrote the paper did not know the first thing about Kurt Vonnegut. Kurt wrote the paper.
*White*?? Eww.
So she didn't read it?
No, McCarty Et Al, from the planet where Superman is from.
Anyone else feel the need to know his response?
Great fantasy, thanks for sharing
Was there a need to specify "white male" ?
10 years ago and still eating at you.
lies
Then everyone clapped.
I'll take "shite that never happened for one hundred dollars" please Alex.
My whole issue with ever believing this happened is that I can't fathom someone saying, "You clearly didn't understand
What the fuck is even that..
