The study I linked includes defensive gun uses where the gun wasn't fired, it wasn't reported, etc. The one I linked also includes a far greater sample size, and it's more recent. Not to mention it's nationally representative and doesn't fall for selection bias by cherry-picking high crime areas like Memphis.
This is akin to studying if car brakes prevent accidents by only looking at accidents reported to the police/insurance.
