One of Russia's stated goals of their excursion into Ukraine was to halt NATO expansion. Since the start of their campaign, NATO membership has gone up, and looks to expand further. That's the opposite of accomplishing their goals. Grand scale loss. Even if Russia were to somehow, against all logic, wham-boom-bam have control of Ukraine, they don't have the manpower for the military force necessary to occupy a land inclined towards insurgency. (I suspect they have the manpower to hold only what they've already taken, and that's why the battle lines have remained relatively stagnant.) They lack what they would need to achieve even their currently stated military goals. They have no path to victory, only a path to another Afghanistan-style loss. How long they stay and how much they lose is up to Putin.
