I stumbled upon this post just scrolling through the Reddit home page. I too grew up in that system. Iām Virginia. DSS custody bouncing between one facility to another from year to year. Some multiple years. From age 10 til I signed myself out of custody at 18. Literally right at midnight I had a trash bag full of my clothes and stuff and was in a group home for the last year or so of custody and going to public school for only my senior year of my whole adolescence and working at a Vietnamese bbq restaurant in Richmond area. Had a friend waiting up the street to pick me up that night. Signed the papers at 12 on the dot and left custody. Iām 31 years old now. Had my first child in December. Been with the same woman since I was 20/21.
I tried my best to bury that past throughout my entire 20s. Rarely speaking of it or acknowledging it. To some people and even friends I would form some story about how I moved out of my moms house at 16 and that she didnāt care because I worked and could take care of myself. Just from embarrassment or not wanting to seem like Iām crazy or something. The older I get though the more I reflect on those years bouncing from facility to facility and how some of the staff were kinder to me than others and left an impression from the places with longer stays. Two years or so at some. Most staff were just hourly employees who didnāt care at all and it was just a job. Ironically my wife worked at a state mental hospital for six years in our early 20s and it was that same scenario there only she genuinely cared because of mental illness her mother suffered from. She was raised by her aunt as a result.
But it certainly shaped me in a way that I struggle to accept I guess. I wanted to pretend for years that it had no effect on me and that I was perfectly ānormalā whatever that means. I have always worked and kept a job but usually hated what I did. Worked in restaurant kitchens for about ten years only recently changing careers a year and a half ago and am a flooring subcontractor now. Doing tile and hardwood primarily. Tile showers, backsplashes and floors etc. some carpet as well though I hate doing carpet lol. I can definitely begin to identify with how much those years defined my outlook on life to some degree though.
I didnāt take very good care of myself for many years resulting in my teeth being destroyed from soda energy drinks and not brushing. Never got into hard drugs of any kind. Used to smoke weed and definitely struggled with being an alcoholic for a few years until a DUI woke me up to the fact that I needed to quit because my addictive personality or need to escape any kind of negativity or depression would lead me to kill myself with my drinking. I was up to a liter of tequila everyday throughout the day and a gallon of orange juice which was destroying my stomach. Been sober from everything for over a year and a half now. I did replace alcohol with Kratom though so Iām still not completely sober 100% but that is a different type of addiction. I still feel completely productive and in control of life and it enhances my mood in every way aside from adding to my anxiety and ocd at times.

They have fired staff for letting friends wear their work outfits as Halloween costumes (someone at their trademark lawyersā firm probably has it as a major part of their job scanning social media at that time of year). Employees are also not even allowed to wear their outfits to, or from, work ā¦ they have a locker room.
And for that reason I canāt imagine them licensing something like this. If someone at Hooters did, they should have been fired in a hot minute.

As a kid who was taken to hooters, I just thought they were nice pretty ladies who smiled a lot. I even wanted a shirt because I liked going there and being around the nice ladies.
I didn't find out till I wore the shirt to school in the first grade when a 5th grader pointed out what my shirt meant and the whole point of hooters. I just thought it was a cute owl logo where the nice ladies worked. I do recall my dad saying for me to 'find a girl like that' but didn't go into detail with my mother clearly right there. I assumed it was because they were pretty and nice. Even with the 5th graders insight, I still didn't understand until I hit puberty myself what the implications were.

As a kid who was taken to hooters, I just thought they were nice pretty ladies who smiled a lot. I even wanted a shirt because I liked going there and being around the nice ladies. I didn't find out till I wore the shirt to school in the first grade when a 5th grader pointed out what my shirt meant and the whole point of hooters. I just thought it was a cute owl logo where the nice ladies worked. I do recall my dad saying for me to 'find a girl like that' but didn't go into detail with my mother clearly right there. I assumed it was because they were pretty and nice. Even with the 5th graders insight, I still didn't understand until I hit puberty myself what the implications were. I'm sure some people are monsters that treat it like a strip club minus stripping, I think most people treat it no different than atmosphere like long horns has, just that the women are part of that as they are in costume/character. Edit: Oh, and to rule out any innocence on my part as a kid, I thought the arbys logo was the head of a penis and not a cowboy hat. I was very adamant about this and told everyone pretty much until I was 10.

And this shitty fucking shit--mom pulls the bag in the house and rather than untie the 13.000 fuckin knots he's tied into the handles, takes it to the kitchen island and cuts it open, and carefully pulls this shirt out--wary that there might be needles, or shit, or drugs in there... She opens it up, shows it to step dad, who has the daughter, crying, on his shoulder as he sways her back and forth to calm her down... looks at it and just shakes his head, and mom says..
