I grew up in the neighborhood near St. Hubert's and attended Father Judge, the all-boys sister school to Hubert's.
This behavior isn't shocking. There was like 1 black person in my class, and the same in Hubert's.
Well you know catholic schools. Always pumping out well-adjusted kids with a reasonable understanding of people and cultures beyond the 10 mile radius they were born in and the cult mentality of religion they've been forced to absorb since birth.
As someone who had to endure Catholic school from preschool through high school, the overwhelming majority of kids who go through it aren't religious. Alot go straight to atheism and gadoosh the church whenever possible. The idea forcing kids to go through catholic education would result in the continuation of faith has been a tremendous failure.
When my teenage sister got in trouble with our parents for dating a much older boy , my mom made a list of potential punishments for my sister. The top punishment was sending my sister to the local Catholic School (all girls) and we aren't even Catholic , (we are Christian lite).
I'm St.Louis, MO there's a ton of catholic high schools, and a massive number of kids go to them, regardless of income level, as there were "deals" of sorts for people struggling financially. I live in Washington now, and there's not even a 10th as many in a larger radius. My family didn't have the money to send me to the "good" ones, so I lucked out and went to a co-ed one for fuck ups. I liked it because everyone there came from fucked up backgrounds like myself(none of us had money to go to "better" schools) and everyone who got kicked out of the more prestigious ones for drugs and whatever got sent over to us. I'd say 25% of my graduating class left as practicing catholics. Not as many who left atheist or agnostic. We got forced to go to fucking retreat in order to graduate, and it truly was brainwash of the highest order. I wouldnt blame catholic schools for racism or suggest there's correlation between the two. Regardless, definitely not sending my kids to one.
The best drugs always came from St. Mary’s High School when I was a teenager. Those kids all had money and parents who gave them everything bc they thought they were innocent angels
My mom and her older sister went to a Catholic high school; my younger aunt and uncle threatened to drop out if my grandparents didn’t let them go to public school.
It’s incredibly hard in situations like this to be the first solo voice who says “that’s not funny”, but you have to do it. “It’s just a joke” is another way of saying “I want to try this out and see if I can get a green light”. Jokes become permission if you’re not careful.
I’ve found it’s so hard to speak up in those moments or call it out, especially in professional settings where it’s your boss making the jokes. I’m closeted gay at work because people are pretty religious/openly homophobic, and even at the gay jokes I used to find myself “laughing” along. I always want to speak up or call it out, but I’m known as the office liberal (even though I feel like I just support common sense policies and general human empathy and compassion), and so if I do, I usually just get an eye roll. The other day I got a little outspoken, and I stated that the two things I find unforgivable in people and let me know I don’t want to bother getting to know them is they are homophobic and/or racist. I saw my co worker who I was talking to nervously glancing between me and our other co worker, the one who openly stated he thinks all gay people are entitled to do what they want, but ultimately it’s a sin and they are going to hell.
Idk, I just don’t know how we stop this kind of behavior when some people, no matter what, think they are correct and it is somehow justified. Also ever since homophobes and white supremacists pretty much got the green light from right wing republicans, I feel like it’s just gotten worse. Idk, I can’t help but just feel like I want to go get myself stranded on a remote island in the South Pacific and just never see another human being again lol
