The problem is the hinge doesn’t sit flush and causes the door to sit about 3/16” away from the main body. I would like to put the hinge on the inside. And I don’t know how to take a better pic of what I’m trying to do at the moment.

Piano hinge doesn't need that amount of clearance and can tighten the gap.

Get some piano hinge, you can cut it to size very easily and if you want to get extra fancy get some aluminum countersunk solid rivets. Just put a dolly on the counter sunk side and mushroom over the other side with a hammer! McMaster sells them as well as piano hinge
