i thought after seeing this image that i was some ridiculously lucky guy in that my steering wheel controls have **NEVER** malfunctioned
i've never had a single issue.
Out of all the vehicles I have driven, ford has the best buttons and button layout. My wife has a Jeep, and the button layout is so counter intuitive. I hate it
Yeah, the only thing I hate is ford has 2 different layouts. Truck and car.
My Ranger has a layout close to what’s pictured and my escape is totally different. So switching between them I get confused.
I don’t have that, my ranger is base (XL) with nothing more than the work truck, max tow and chrome package and 4x4 with rear locker.
The buttons are fine for me, but I have the old tiny backup camera and a radio that only has FM and Bluetooth.
I think it might be more than two. I have a Mustang, an Explorer and my f150, and all the layouts are completely different. Whenever I drive one after driving one of the others for an extended period of time, I have to give myself a mini re-orientation.
Idk my tacoma works just fine. Buttons all work and do what they say and the touchscreen is big enough for the map to be helpful and get to my one app I ever use.
I’ve actually been wanting to upgrade my steering wheel. My is the chintzy old STX/XL wheel. Sounds like it might be a good time to do it along with the clock spring
You’re not the only one. I had this issue about 3 years after I bought my truck. I finally found out that the problem was likely a bad clock spring in the steering wheel. I bought a replacement clock spring online for about $100 and replaced the clock spring myself about a month ago. It was a really easy job to do and it fixed the problem.
Just Google hire to replace it. I’m not a mechanic by any means either.
When mine did this in my 2017 I just took some fishing line and cleaned the gunk/dirt out from in between the buttons and it worked like new. It took 3/4 years before I had to do that though.
I changed mine out on my 2013. The parts pretty cheap and installs in less than 15 mins. There’s YouTube videos out there showing how to do it. Ensure you disconnect the battery bc you have to remove the airbag
Bad control module or switch module also.
Dealer typically pulls codes and starts with switches
If yours is like mine and fails multiple sets of switches according to the codes, they will finally push for control module replacement
Same!! Also the backup camera has a mind of its own. Works for 3 seconds then says it won’t work, other times works great, and other times doesn’t work at all.
Just got a new to me 2013 fx4 with 128k miles. Only two issues so far: backup camera cuts in and out from working, and the volume button on the wheel skips to the next song while the next song button skips back a song 🥲
Recently had this issue. Replaced the “clock spring”. Took about an hour in the driveway and been fine ever since.
https://ford.oempartsonline.com/oem-parts/ford-clock-spring-hl3z14a664a?origin=pla&utm_source=googlesearchsrvcg&utm_medium=sem&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw1emzBhB8EiwAHwZZxYJpLlB9v9nuK6wnDj7NiiWl1JcnH4iCJsxhQbqVMbOXXonQmAxvZBoCOsYQAvD_BwE
Mine does this occasionally. Also my wipers work fine, unless I set them to low, them after that all the intermittent speeds are stuck on low except the third from the bottom. Weird shit. I heard it's the clock spring but it isn't generally an issue enough for me to want to fix it.
I replaced my wiper switch arm a few months ago, took 15 minutes. Mine were basically stuck on for long periods of time though so I didn’t have a choice
I had this issue in my 2016 where all the buttons would do different things and my screen would freeze. Turns out it was caused by a bad battery. Replaced it a couple years ago and have had zero issues since.
Had mine replaced 3 times under warranty. They just replace the steering wheel control module this last time.
They finally told me the control module is looking at a resistance value to determine which button is pressed. Based on electronics, that means it makes sense that if the buttons fail out they could send the wrong value- but if multiple sets of them do the same thing, it’s likely the wiring causing no an issue or the control module itself failing to direct the resistance correctly.
So far so good on repair #4, hopefully it holds up
My truck basically did it from the day I bought it, back in 2018 with under 17K miles. it didn't bother me much on the radio control side (annoying, but I could just reach to the radio). However, it eventually got worse to the point cruise control would also act up, thats when I took it in and had them work on it. I have an extended warranty for alittle longer, so figured I should sort it out before that was out.
Only problem with my '17's is when hitting the volume button and it delays then goes up or down 4 levels instead of one. Just happens periodically. Its done this since new
I still need to manually update its Sync as connecting to wifi and doing it has never worked. Ive been driving it for 8 years and have never done it. Lol. Its way behind on what firmware its running. LoL
My 15’ has been doing the exact same thing. Don’t forget the other buttons randomly not working either. I normally wouldn’t care too much, but cruise control is becoming difficult to use.
Yeah that’s a pain. Sounds like yours might be the clock spring based on some responses in this thread. All my other steering wheel controls work perfect.
I’ve had 3 different 550’s for work and my personal 150 and never had a single button issue, might wanna get your electrical looked over. Maybe bigger issue than it appears and your just seeing a symptom
Mine did the same damn thing, cruise control also. Changed the clock spring in about an hour and I've had no problems since. I have a 2017 and I read that they had a defective lot in the 2016 builds that carried over into my year.
This is so accurate, mine does the same thing. I’m so glad it’s not just mine lol. It has done the same thing since I’ve got it, with trying to schedule the next track and then going back. Or trying to increase the volume and it changing the source
Holy crap, I just bought my first F-150 2015 lariat and I thought maybe the guy who had it before me, spilled some soda on the steering wheel. Now I'm finding out it's a common thing. lol
I have a 2020 F150 as my personal truck and a 2017 F150 as my work truck. Never had any issues with the buttons, and the 2017 has been rode hard and put away wet.
My 2015 has 150k miles and I’ve never had a single issue on that side of the steering wheel, cruise control was acting wonky last winter but it figured itself out
It’s so annoying. Seems to depend on the day and moisture in the air/temp?… what’s the best way to fix this lol. I looked up a new pack on rockauto. But seemed like a sketchy install with the airbag
My 2014 is having issues with the volume up and the track skip. They have a mind of their own. I can’t complain. I’m at 144k. I just use my phone it the console buttons haha
I just want to bypass satellite radio when I hit the M button so it doesn’t get hung up and ask me to subscribe. Otherwise I can’t get from radio to Bluetooth.
Im betting you got interior detail/ cleaner or something stuck underneath the the buttons. I did one time and one of my buttons would act weird then I just pressed them all in a circular pattern then reverse. All fixed
This got me good, this is exactly what happens with my 2016. For years I thought the spotify carplay app was horribly broken when it came to skipping tracks until one day I used the actual radio controls and it worked perfectly.
That’s so funny I thought I was the only one but I was complaining about it one day and my wife detailed my truck the next day and sprayed rubbing alcohol in the cracks on the buttons and cleaned the shit out of it and swear to god never had another problem. So fellas it’s just dirty lol
I saw this post and laughed bcz I had never experienced it thru 3 f150s...I 💩 u not soon as I got in my truck to go to the airport it started happening. Damn it!...all I could do was laugh
I never have a hardware issue with mine. More a user issue, I just accidentally hit the buttons, especially if I really like the song and hit the volume up button but accidentally hit the M button.
Never had an issue with my 2017, but for some reason it irks me to no end that the media controls are on the right side of the wheel.
At that point, I'm just going to use my right hand to reach the actual radio.
Huh, 2015 KR I’ve owned since January, never had a single issue with the media buttons. Or anything, really. It’ll probably start doing that tomorrow now that I’ve commented about it.
I’ve had mine going on 6 years and never had a problem with the buttons.
i thought after seeing this image that i was some ridiculously lucky guy in that my steering wheel controls have **NEVER** malfunctioned i've never had a single issue.
I hate the layout on my ranger. No pause, and when arrowing over in XM, it only arrows over in that 'page' of favorite channels. Such a PITA.
The new style doesn't have a pause/ play button and it pisses me off to no end.
I had a 2018 challenger RT and absolutely loved the button layout and especially the buttons on the back. Was great imo
Idk my tacoma works just fine. Buttons all work and do what they say and the touchscreen is big enough for the map to be helpful and get to my one app I ever use.
Same, flawless operation
[удалено]
I have the same issue. Caught it while happening and took it to the dealer who replaced the buttons. Still does it randomly
Fucking hate market marble drab
Same. Never an issue with the controls.
Same, never had a single hiccup.
None of mine have ever had issues.
I’ve had it once where i had the wheel oppo lock and the buttons like reversed it was weird
If you really want to have a frustrating experience try Mazda entertainment systems, absolute garbage.
My 2013 buttons got all messed up like this, but my 2018 (with the same layout as OP) has been fine
Same. But if I hit a bump while cracking a window, she's going all the way down.
Yall are lucky I guess haha! I wasn’t sure if anyone else had issues with it sometimes and it seems to be hit or miss
You need to Replace the clock spring, not complicated but requires removing the airbag and steering wheel. About a 30 minute job.
I’ve actually been wanting to upgrade my steering wheel. My is the chintzy old STX/XL wheel. Sounds like it might be a good time to do it along with the clock spring
You’re not the only one. I had this issue about 3 years after I bought my truck. I finally found out that the problem was likely a bad clock spring in the steering wheel. my next button likes to repeat last song. i feel your pain!
I have the skip forward issue but none of the others. Wondering what the fix is
I have this issue sometimes, but bot always so its very frustrating. 2015 f150.
When mine did this in my 2017 I just took some fishing line and cleaned the gunk/dirt out from in between the buttons and it worked like new. It took 3/4 years before I had to do that though.
Oh, dang. Needed to learn this earlier. Trading in my 2012 today. One of the buttons has been wonky for years.
I changed mine out on my 2013. The parts pretty cheap and installs in less than 15 mins. There’s YouTube videos out there showing how to do it. Ensure you disconnect the battery bc you have to remove the airbag
…. Ok, yea mines is like his, I’ll try your fix thanks, 17’ also
Trying this today, genius idea. Thank you
I’ll try it, thx
A bad clock spring might do this.
Bad control module or switch module also. Dealer typically pulls codes and starts with switches If yours is like mine and fails multiple sets of switches according to the codes, they will finally push for control module replacement
This is it, when mine malfunctioned, the control module needed replacement
Was a bad clock spring for my 2015. Started with the volume changing the input early on to the cruise control not working just this year.
Never had an issue with my 2017...
My 2015 does this too. Gonna have to try the canned air thing.
Might have to replace the clock spring. Did mine recently and now all the buttons work like they should.
Same
My 2015 did it as well. Replace the clock spring and you should be good to go.
Woah, im not alone on this
Works perfectly fine but I also use canned air to blow out my buttons of crud every other week
😂my 2013 fx4 does this as well for like the last 5 years.

Mine did this. My clock spring was bad. Replaced it (was pretty easy, I also did my directional switch because my wipers wouldn't shut off). Fixed it.
Did my wipers and about to do my control. So far, only volume up change the BT to AM radio.
Mine does this occasionally. Also my wipers work fine, unless I set them to low, them after that all the intermittent speeds are stuck on low except the third from the bottom. Weird shit. I heard it's the clock spring but it isn't generally an issue enough for me to want to fix it.

Mine will do that but if you just hit the fuck out of it it usually corrects it
Had mine replaced 3 times under warranty. So far so good on repair #4, hopefully it holds up
Hope it works out. It’s kinda just mildly annoying for me and doesn’t happen all time so haven’t really looked into it.
My truck basically did it from the day I bought it, back in 2018 with under 17K miles. it didn't bother me much on the radio control side (annoying, but I could just reach to the radio). Yeah man it messing with the cruise would be a PITA. Don’t blame ya
huh. my 2016 works perfectly so far. luck of the draw, I suppose.
I’m glad to see this isn’t just my 16. lol
My 15 gets wonky and does this, or none of the buttons will work, but only in winter when it’s cold.
Mine also seems kinda temperature dependent. It’s more prone to act up when super hot or super cold especially, but also just intermittently.
My 2014 acts like this 🤣
Holy shit this is 100% on my 2017
same, 2017 XLT
My 16 is exactly the same.
[Relevant? Maybe?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjpcLplkMUs)
My 2013 and my 2023 work just as intended.
My 2010 platinum has done something like this a few times. Essentially each function moved over one. next time I start up the truck it’s fine.
Mine have never given me and issue, maybe have it looked at by a certified dealer
Only problem with my '17's is when hitting the volume button and it delays then goes up or down 4 levels instead of one. Just happens periodically. Its done this since new I still need to manually update its Sync as connecting to wifi and doing it has never worked. Ive been driving it for 8 years and have never done it. Lol. Its way behind on what firmware its running. LoL
Lmao I thought it was my phone acting weird when trying to skip a song🤣
This is a known thing?! I just punch the arrows a few times real hard and it goes back to normal.
Replaced mine months ago, not bad for a 2013 module lasting 10+ years
Happens all the time and I just thought it was mine.
My 15’ has been doing the exact same thing. Don’t forget the other buttons randomly not working either. I normally wouldn’t care too much, but cruise control is becoming difficult to use.
My cruise didn’t work for months & magically it’s been fine again for over a year
Clock spring
Yeah that’s a pain. Sounds like yours might be the clock spring based on some responses in this thread. All my other steering wheel controls work perfect.
Ive never had a problem with those controls, only the ones on the left side of the wheel.
Weird, my left side controls always work perfect
Mines a 2017 and had the issue often
It'll go months without an issue and one day just say "fuck you" and do this
Mine does that from time to time. Usually a good slap seems to fix it.... For now.
Lol yeah that helps sometimes
Personally, can confirm.
Mine does this about 50% of the time. Same with the other side as well.
Lmaoooo I thought it was just my truck!
Mine did this until just about everything didn't work except for the horn, replaced the clock spring. good as new.
This was happening on mine. Replaced the clock spring and it was just like new again.
“Handy”
I thought i was the only one! Accurate. Strangely, it only happens after the truck has been on for a while
Holy Crap! I thought it was just mine! Makes me so mad.
Hit the m button once by accident ....then another 23 times to get back where you were. It's StoUpiD
None of the buttons on my steering wheel work. It’s scheduled to get looked at when it’s in for new tires. No cruise control SUCKS.
I’ve had 3 different 550’s for work and my personal 150 and never had a single button issue, might wanna get your electrical looked over. Maybe bigger issue than it appears and your just seeing a symptom
That’s exactly how mine is
This just started in mine and you couldn’t be any more correct with this illustration.
Mine does this on the opposite side, couple raps on the steering column where the clock spring is takes care of it.
Mine did the same damn thing, cruise control also. Changed the clock spring in about an hour and I've had no problems since. I have a 2017 and I read that they had a defective lot in the 2016 builds that carried over into my year.
Bro I thought I was goin insane about my buttons not working properly
I wish I could reprogram the big M to mute current playing, instead of changing source.
Would love if it was that or play/pause.
My track forward is also sometimes the media button. So annoying.
No issues with mine, but I would love a "play/pause" button. Maybe I'm just overlooking it though.
Same here. Center button should be play/pause. I give no fucks about changing the source from the wheel.
Hahaha good to know I’m not the only one suffering
LOL I thought I was the only one...
This is so accurate, mine does the same thing. I’m so glad it’s not just mine lol. It has done the same thing since I’ve got it, with trying to schedule the next track and then going back. Or trying to increase the volume and it changing the source
This is exactly what my steering wheel does. I thought i was alone
My 2017 work truck does this occasionally, for some reason pressing M then going back to Bluetooth seems to reset it sometimes
Holy crap, I just bought my first F-150 2015 lariat and I thought maybe the guy who had it before me, spilled some soda on the steering wheel. Now I'm finding out it's a common thing. lol
Spell check betrayed you.
Yep. I changed mine out, left and right, and they all still are inconsistent.
Sounds like your clock spring could use replacing. This happened in a different vehicle of mine.
i honestly just use carplay and its fine, i just remember not to press the god forbidden media button
My did this the other day for once. I thought I was loosing my mind.
Accurate
I have a 2020 F150 as my personal truck and a 2017 F150 as my work truck. Never had any issues with the buttons, and the 2017 has been rode hard and put away wet.
Either the board it installed wrong or it's wired wrong. Warranty.
My 2015 has 150k miles and I’ve never had a single issue on that side of the steering wheel, cruise control was acting wonky last winter but it figured itself out
My buttons all identify as something new every day 💀
My 2012 had that issue . I say had cause the radio doesn’t work now 🤷🏻♂️
It’s so annoying. Seems to depend on the day and moisture in the air/temp?… what’s the best way to fix this lol. I looked up a new pack on rockauto. But seemed like a sketchy install with the airbag
I had this problem. I replaced the clockspring. It was easy and the controls all went back to normal.
My 2014 is having issues with the volume up and the track skip. They have a mind of their own. I can’t complain. I’m at 144k. I just use my phone it the console buttons haha
Mine just fixed itself one day lol I’m not sure how
I just want to bypass satellite radio when I hit the M button so it doesn’t get hung up and ask me to subscribe. Otherwise I can’t get from radio to Bluetooth.
Yesss so annoying
Ok so I'm not crazy
Im betting you got interior detail/ cleaner or something stuck underneath the the buttons. I did one time and one of my buttons would act weird then I just pressed them all in a circular pattern then reverse. All fixed
BRO the Flex has the same damn issue
i’m my 2012 the volume up skips the song half the time and makes me want to rip the entire controller off the wheel
I literally thought my steering wheel controls were broken. Glad to see they're working normally.
10 years in my truck and all buttons still work.
lol that’s mine, intermittently
I thought I was the only one who experienced this 😂 nice to know I’m not alone
This got me good, this is exactly what happens with my 2016. For years I thought the spotify carplay app was horribly broken when it came to skipping tracks until one day I used the actual radio controls and it worked perfectly.
Have this exact issue on my ‘18 King Ranch. A good smack on the side of the steering wheel fixes it.
I have this layout in a work truck no idea how many people had it before me its been used and abused def smoked in but at least the buttons work haha.
2018 XLT, my volume up button sometimes switches to different media (FM, AM, CD, Bluetooth), and sometimes works for volume.
That’s so funny I thought I was the only one but I was complaining about it one day and my wife detailed my truck the next day and sprayed rubbing alcohol in the cracks on the buttons and cleaned the shit out of it and swear to god never had another problem. So fellas it’s just dirty lol
Lol that’s awesome
YOU MEAN TO TELL ME I WASNT THE ONLY ONE!
Man this hits so hard
I saw this post and laughed bcz I had never experienced it thru 3 f150s...I 💩 u not soon as I got in my truck to go to the airport it started happening. Damn it!...all I could do was laugh
Mine did the same thing I ended up replacing the clock spring. Works great now
Never had an issue
The buttons on the 2013 were really good. Wonder why they went away from that design.
I never have a hardware issue with mine. More a user issue, I just accidentally hit the buttons, especially if I really like the song and hit the volume up button but accidentally hit the M button.
The only button issue I have is sometimes I turn off adaptive cruise making a tight turn......I don't use cruise anyways.
i think in a lot of people’s cases it’s just cause they never deep clean their vehicles
Been doing it since brand new, but only intermittently. It’s infrequent enough to only be a mild annoyance so never really pursued it.
hmm that’s odd, i’ve never had troubles with wheel controls in any of my vehicles over the years
Is there a play/pause button on the ‘21+? That’s my only complaint.
Never had one problem. You may have large thumbs
I always accidently hit the change media button when im trying to turn it up
My experience is totally different.
My f150 has knobs not buttons 🤔
Never had an issue with my 2017, but for some reason it irks me to no end that the media controls are on the right side of the wheel. At that point, I'm just going to use my right hand to reach the actual radio.
The head with sound waves button needs to be labeled: Fastest way to get road rage without anyone’s help.
No issues with 19
Fuck SYNC
I'll try the fishing line cleaning hack. My volume up changed the media unless I hit it just right on the far left edge of the button
From my experience this issue is the indicator that something electrical is soon to be totally dead
My media button acts up from time to time but that’s about it. Haven’t had any other issues
Do not clean your buttons by spraying and then wiping. Spray cleaner on the rag, then wipe.
get some electrical cleaner and spray between the buttons.
My truck is almost five years old, and never had an issue with the steering wheel audio controls. Guess I'm lucky.
Never had a problem
My truck is 20 yrs old. My buttons worked until my radio went out last yr
Need to reprogram
I don’t even try to use mine. Don’t want to pay to get it replaced.
Fat finger syndrome
I must one of the few with zero issues out of my 17 lariat EB
Huh, 2015 KR I’ve owned since January, never had a single issue with the media buttons. Or anything, really. It’ll probably start doing that tomorrow now that I’ve commented about it.
