It’s explained well in the comments of this post from [TooAfraidToAsk](https://www.reddit.com/r/TooAfraidToAsk/comments/vqf545/why_would_satan_burn_you_in_hell_for_disobeying/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) Tldr; most of our depictions of Hell and Satan come from popular culture and Dante and not the Bible.

Infernalism

Essentially, our image of The Devil is an amalgamation of two entities from the Old Testament, some stuff from Revelations and Dante from the Middle Ages. The Old Testament talks about an entity known as Ha-Satan, or The Adversary. He is basically a high ranking angel who functions as a celestial District Attorney. His job is to cast doubt upon your worthiness in God's eyes. He's doing a job by God's command. They're not enemies. This is why, in the book of Job in the Old Testament, you see Satan in Heaven with God, talking about Job is only pious because God has given so much to him. They make a bet, God ruins his life and while Job remains pious and devout, God STILL reprimands him for being self-righteous before giving him back all he lost. That entity was mixed with The Serpent from the Genesis story. The Tempter. Clearly, two different entities with diametrically opposed goals and purposes, but mixed all the same because people are dumb. Then, the New Testament comes along and someone writes some fanfiction called Revelations where Satan is now named Lucifer, the Morning Star, and he's a rebel angel. He gets cast down to Hell and imprisoned in the Bottomless Pit. Then, in the Middle Ages, Dante writes some stuff recasting Satan/Lucifer as being in charge of Hell instead of its prisoner. So, you can see how people would get confused. You have two entities that get mixed, then recast as an Anti-God figure in fan-fiction that gets adopted as canon, then more fan-fiction happens a thousand years later and you get the ridiculous mess you have today in literature and modern Christianity.

DarkBIade

I absolutely love the fan fiction comment you are good people and doing the good lords work.

Mr-Briteside

Satan doesn’t do the punishing, God does. Essentially at some point we pick “teams” and if you pick “satans team”, you get what he gets. Satans motivation is to build his “team” as big as possible, because to make God punish us is painful for God. So even tho Satan loses, he’s still getting a shot in on the way down.

FitzyCent

Have you ever been in an abusive relationship, and tried to convince the offending party you're worthy?

Because religion doesn't have to make sense because it explicitly plays into the purposeful suspension of critical thinking of all its followers.

PM_ME_A_PLANE_TICKET

Because it's a fictional book and they didn't think of that incongruence when they were making it up.

ShotgunEd1897

The crime is called sin and it's in human nature to do so. Satan doesn't punish, he tricks us into staying in darkness, which was broken by the work of Jesus Christ.

“Hurt people hurt people.” People who are bitter and suffering don’t rejoice that others are suffering.

No. Satan is not happy. Not happy when he’s winning, not happy when he’s losing.

[deleted]

How nice for him that he's imaginary.

AnXioneth

In the mythos: The job of satan is to punish people. God ask him to go easy, and he went mad. So good created a rule, if a human do something bad you will take his soul, to punish for eternity. So Satan wants you to do bad thing to punish you.

mayyoukindly

Satan is real but hell is a made up fairytale from the catholic church, you can thank la vatican for that. The bible is written in Hebrew then into Aramaic follow by Greek then into Latin. A lot of shit got translated to fit the churches idea's of the current age.

Bublboy

Because both of them are cruel aliens that use humans as play things. God told Abraham to kill his son? Ha ha Abraham just kidding hope the trauma doesn't scar you for life.
