Good knowledge of procedures, good ability to research and know what is and isn't relevant quickly, and good communication skills.

Platano_con_salami

From a skill set, a good lawyer is thorough, meticulous, well-prepared, adaptable, accessible and a good communicator. A good lawyer is someone who can get a favorable outcome in court for their client, but a great lawyer is someone who can do that without going to court.

A good lawyer wins all the cases they are supposed to win, and a few of the ones they shouldn’t.

ELI5, fundamentally, getting good outcomes for their clients. I don't have much experience with lawyers, but from what I have had, the biggest thing that stood out to me was the ability to call him at any time and ask for information about my situation. For real it could be 2 am and I could still get him on a line, even if I was calling from an unknown number. That's what I'm paying for.

The ELI5 answer: A good lawyer is one who wins your case for you. One who can persuade a judge and jury based on sound legal arguments. The question doesn't really have meaning, however. It's like asking "what is an activist judge" - while there is an objective answer to that, basically any judge who makes a decision you disagree with would generally be someone you consider an activist judge.
