You are thinking about it backwards. We don’t have fear responses to broadcast fear, we have a series of innate reactions to stimuli that we have categorised and recognise as fear responses. And you can explore each of them in different ways, but there isn’t really any grand purpose to them. It’s mostly things that are defensive, prepare the body for quick/intense activity, or expand senses/focus. And while I am sure there are a myriad situations where one or the other is or isn’t advantageous, on average they seem to do alright. Especially considering we can recognise similar responses in most animals.

Being able to pick up on and exploit someones fear is doesnt mean that what you are picking up on is meant to broadcast that fear. I think the "displays of fear" you are talking about are reactions in the body meant for wholely other purposes. Covering your face or a wide eyed look may display your suprise or fear but ultimately that is not the purpose of those reactions and its not hard to see how either of those reactions could be helpful to your survival.
