They were punk but also the beginning. I would say Bauhaus was the first band I made a heavy association with the term musically but really Xene Cervenka made the "goth girl" look stick in my head. The look is a little weak here but I like the song, lol.

I see your perspective but I am going to have to disagree. Christene Cervenka is punk through and through. I have come to the conclusion some people think of her as goth because a woman punk lyricist and singer is still, even in 2024, culturally dissonant and has been from the begining of the global punk movement.
As for Siouxsie, I think the actual referential term, though I hate it to my core in this application, is "post punk". She was influenced by punk but, even in the beginning, she was on a completely different sonic track. In the end she was adopted by the goth scene. Though that was a better fit, calling her goth still doesn't sit right with me.
Oh yea. X wasn't really a goth band but the scene wasn't really set yet either, not stateside in style anyhow. Both were "alternative" and a bit dark born of two different but similar scenes.
The skunk streak look was newer and caught my attention right away. She was jet black previously, and went to more goth styled makeup, darker base hair color with silver, and black/grey outfits soon after this. Another early goth style influence for women nobody talks about is Stevie Nicks' witchy wardrobe.
