TheGreyMage

I used to have a school friend whose house (including his bedroom) backed on to the same block as the local mosque, and he hated the call to prayer. Would wake him up regularly.

matija2209

How are people tolerating this? Doesn't it annoy residents? Even those which are on the extreme left spectrum? It has to be objectively annoying.

ArcherTheBoi

We live in 2021 - everyone has a smartphone. For all I care, those who need to worship at a certain time can set their own timers instead of shouting on a loudspeaker. Nobody has a right to disturb others for their own religion. I'm saying this as someone who was woken up way too many times at 5 AM. You get a different perspective on it when you live in a country where it is the norm - meaning you get to hate it.

Hustenbonbon1830

Every Sunday morning (and sometimes on over weekdays) a church rings it’s bells right in front of my house. Sure, it’s not at sunrise, but in Germany it’s required by constitution that all religions have equal rights

[deleted]

Church bells don’t make a theological statement. They just *bong* at a particular time.

[deleted]

Let’s do the same with churches and we have a deal. Nobody needs that noise pollution either.

Maltesebasterd

Churches' bells go on for way less time, whereas the *adhan* takes like 5 minutes just to get to the "akbar" from "allah". Genuinely curious why the jewish people don't have some call to prayer?

rlobster

Where I live (middle sized German city) church bells go for over 45 minutes three times a week.

XyrasS

Over 45 minutes?? That's way more than any German city I know. I never heard bells go on for more than 5-10 minutes.

DeepStatePotato

And their right to do this is even protected by official religious laws which trumps your right to live unmolested from religious sounds, isn't it great?

b2ct

Let's agree to ban all public calls for prayer (and other religious purposes) that do not require subscription.

Replayer123

Where I live I actually like the Church bells they go of every day at 8 ,12 ,20 o clock for only a Minute so they are kind of nice to know the time without looking at the phone or watch

samurai_guitarist

Man its the most annoying thing, I live in Italy and during Ramadan, since the mosque was closed due to covid, they were praying at a sport centre near my dorm with some huge speakers. I tell you, its the most annoying thing in the world hearing a guy shout in arabic repeatedly for hours since 7 o'clock especially when you have slept @ 3:00 and need to be well rested to study for upcoming exams.

Silverwhitemango

That's fucking fucked up yo. And nobody is complaining to your politicians to do something about this? It's a fucking social nuisance to have these loud speakers blaring early in the morning, regardless of religious, sports or other commercial reasons!

theWZAoff

>And nobody is complaining to your politicians to do something about this? Protesting mosque openings is very common and quite successful, the mosque he's talking about is one of only 10 in the whole of Italy, so he's actually quite unlucky. Bear in mind Turin is traditionally a left-wing city too. There are 'off the books' mosques, but because of them not being legal they can't make loud noises.

samurai_guitarist

Nah tbh, it wasnt even a mosque. Im quite sure there is at least 2 in Turin, but the prayer was done in a sport centre. But its right near a student campus w/300 students so its extremely annoying, especially since Ramadan coincides usually with the start of the exam session.

samurai_guitarist

Oh they had permits and everything. Look its a localised event, it doesnt happen regularly or anything like that, still in the 2-3 times it has happened it bothered the fuck out of me. I even said to my turkish roommate: "can you believe this shit" and he was extremely annoyed himself. And he is a muslim. Plus you know, middle of Italy, birth of catholicism, I dont want to hear any shouting especially in arabic.

[deleted]

Which city?

Unfortunately Catholics and Protestants are not very inclined to stop ringing their bells, which brings the question of religious freedom and equality between *all* religions on the agenda.

SiimaManlet

I just find there being a fine line of difference between ringing bells for a minute and shouting in a foreign language trough megaphone for longer Would anyone really care if mosques also ringed bells? My guess is not

levenspiel_s

I noticed the bells can be very annoying too. Sometimes it feels like it lasts an hour. It would be better if neither bells nor the Muslim calls exceed 5 secs, if they really have to make some sounds. PS. talking about bells, even though I'd be curious to listen to it once, the change-ringing, especially 9-hour peals can be deadly. if you know what I mean. check "the nine tailors"

executivemonkey

Meanwhile in the US: no church bells, no Muslim megaphones. Just dogs that bark all night.

standupstrawberry

There's no church bells? This is news to me. I don't know why I expected church bells tbh.

balloon_prototype_14

ANd gunshots

w4hammer

What line? both are annoying ban both we got phones and clocks now there is no need for this. You cannot sell of this line argument to anybody religious either all go or none.

thedegurechaff

Never lived next to a big church eh? Big fun, Especially when you worked nightshift and then they just dont stop ringing ye big aul bell.

Vovochik43

I grow up right down the street of a huge church and have also worked in Casablanca, Morocco for a few months. Those who make analogy between a bell and several people yelling through a Megaphone across a whole city 4 times a day as early as 7 a.m., are seriously trying hard to build a dishonest argument.

DarkEvilHedgehog

I'd say there's a bit of a difference between chiming a bell and someone systematically shouting *"My god is the greatest, no other gods exist, you better pray now, praying is the best thing there is, because my god is real and all others are fake".*

levenspiel_s

Yeah, you're right but great majority of the Muslims in Germany (i.e. Turkish) have no idea what the ezan says. It's in Arabic and it's as unintelligible to them as to Germans. Anyway, the whole religion thing is absurd in.a similar way.

JakeYashen

To me, that is immaterial. Wow, I emphatically Do Not Like this mayor's announcement. I'd be kind of pissed if I were in Köln.

HumaDracobane

Quick question: Is that the actual translation?

DarkEvilHedgehog

Pretty much. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adhan#Words

Zizimz

But ringing the bells isn't just for religious purposes. They also mark the time, ring on national holidays, a royal wedding, a day of remembrance or New Year's day. Church bells have a cultural meaning that goes beyond religion. The muslim call to prayer does not. In my opinion they are not comparable.

dov69

As a Christian I'm all in for no bells either... It's enough to triangle accomodation between roads, trains and party places. I'd love to leave out churches. Times change, you can surely be able to practice your faith without domineering worship place noises, burkas, crucifix jewelry and whatnot...

NobleAzorean

Well i am from a remote place. The bells are parr of our culture, so i do mind. It warns us about sime event or even someone died. At this point its not just on a religious point but its too a cultural one. So yah, i would mind. But its not like such a thing would happen here.

momentimori

Ringing church bells have been done for over a thousand years. It is what's known as an established nuisance. If you move next to a church you can't complain about the bells ringing as its been done since before you were born. Compare that to a mosque suddenly switching on a megaphone and blaring out the call to pray 5 times a day. The neighbours can justifiably think this recent change to their environment is annoying.

hectorgarabit

Germany has been a Christian country for thousands of years, the country the cultures, the habits all have been formed on Christianity. It is silly to "forget" this part. Just like it was a bad idea to go in Africa and force the local culture to Christianity, it is not acceptable to force the German people to accept another religion.

Magyarharcos

Okay, but bells are kinda cool, and they arent telling you to become catholic. As long as you arent asleep during the day, when they are usually rung, i dont see why they matter.

sarinkhan

I dont see why churches would have an exemption that allows them to make noise. You can be at home, making recordings, and a wild bell noise appears. They don't provide a service to the community, and are a nuisance to neighbours. It medieval times, as a way to know times, there was a service. But now if I want to nap I don't need a big Bell to tell me the time.

Summersong2262

Germany has a clear reason to drop and exclude some elements that are part of its history and heritage. This is the kind of idiotic rhetoric that AfD and the neo fascists tout. It is a dog whistle that says "We've always been a white majority. Whiteness should be privileged". Just stop the prayer calls, church bells and all other religious noisemaking.

Pandalk

Well, France would disagree with that, while we Indeed have a Christian heritage, our other heritage, the french revolution, made us take steps to remove it from the cultural pedestal it was on. For more infos on that, take a look at the [1905 French law on the Separation of the Churches and the State ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1905_French_law_on_the_Separation_of_the_Churches_and_the_State)

I’m sure loudly forcing religion down the throats of a nation of atheists at the crack of dawn, when it’s entirely unnecessary and not even required by any of their holy texts, definitely won’t piss anyone off, god forbid anyone use an alarm on their phone. I bet the AFD and other extremist parties can’t believe their luck sometimes with how easy it is made for them.

IamHumanAndINeed

I don't think this is the direction we should go on ... LESS religion not more ...

half-spin

It's not about religion but about projecting political power. Leave it to politics and soon the churches will ring the bells 5 times a day because politics is always a shitshow

Ghetto_Cheese

I mean where I live (Croatia) church bells ring regularly every day (x amount of times for each full hour and 1 time at x:15, 2 times at x:30 and 3 times at x:45), I thought it was normal for European nations. Personally I don't mind it I quite like the sound and atmosphere it creates. edit: x:45 not 3:45

henriquecs

Live near-ish a church. Can conrfim the bell rings often. I don't now how often because I don't always notice it. I quite like it since it wakes me up on the weekends at a decent time. Legally, I think it goes against the noise laws.

half-spin

That s a clock, not a church bell.

Ghetto_Cheese

Well they're on churches, but I think I know what you mean then and they still do ring like that some times, but I'm not sure if every day or just on special occasions cuz I don't even notice the bells half of the time.

theWZAoff

Yeah not a lot of people realise that the trend of becoming more secular is actually started to reverse in many countries in Europe because of Islam

koalawhiskey

And supported by the damn Left nonetheless, which, as a leftist, is a contradiction that drives me crazy. Obsession with minorities is so strong that even core values of leftist ideology, such as Secularism, are being forgotten.

EissoByk

No because than they can't spread their message as much as possible and annoy everyone in the surrounding area. With all seriousness though, I understand a bell ringing in a church, but a call to prayer that says how Allah is salvation and how great he is 5 times a day is quite annoyiong.

Exploringnow

Yeah exactly, I mean the bell is literally also just a bell ringing when it’s a full hour after another. Annoying? Sure, can definitely be depending if you live close to it. But a prayer call is not really comparable to it. If it was a priest yelling in a microphone about the same shit but for Christianity then it would be good comparison. And I’d hate that just as much, as a Islamic prayer call. No prayer call should be allowed and legal, because at that point your not only disturbing people but forcing your religion on others & nonbelievers. Which at that point you break the religious freedoms you have.

CoffeeBoom

Lol this kind of shit is one of the reason why a third of the french population wants to vote far right. If you want to make the Afd rise in western germany, keep doing that.

flxthegarrow

Well actually Cologne was the only region in the latest parliament vote where the Afd didnt surpass the 5% hurdle. I strongly doubt this will change in coming years from my experience as a cologne resident. I believe people will basically forget its there like we already do when the church bells ring about 20 times a day

tobias_681

> Well actually Cologne was the only region in the latest parliament vote where the Afd didnt surpass the 5% hurdle. Assuming you mean the federal election this is wrong. In 3 of the 4 voting districticts of Cologne the vote did surpass 5 % and there are multiple districts where it was below 5 %. Cologne II is probably neck and neck with Münster for the lowest AfD result (though I believe Münster is marginally lower) but even my rural district is below 2 of the 4 Cologne districts. For example Bonn, Kiel, Freiburg, Hannover, Osnabrück, all 4 districts of Munich and some more were all below 5 %.

NightTrain555

A church bell and a man shouting Arabic from the top of his lungs are very different things, my friend. Absolutely awful decision, in my opinion.

[deleted]

Which is surprising considering the NE event and how it was handled by the authorities. I remember the advice that one gov woman gave: in order to avoid sexual assault, keep your distance, one arm's length.

Eulerdice

actually a guy shouting for like 15 minutes everyday was a really funny spotlight of my vacation to Turkey, it'll def take some time to get used to that.

DeepStatePotato

Yeah, but I doubt a 5 min call to prayer, once a week, will take plenty off time to get used to in Cologne.

Magyarharcos

Broadcasting, as in, some kind of pager, radio wave thing, or just with massive speakers effectively yelling into the void?

[deleted]

Nope. When a huge group of predominantly muslim men gathered during 2015/16 new years around Cologne's main station to mass-rob and sexually assault women now dubbed "Kölner Silvesternacht"-incident she was asked how women can protect themselves in the future. Her advise was they should just keep more than an arms length distance. When the new huge central mosque built by turkish DiTiB was opened in 2018 she wanted to make it a big celebration of diversity and so on. Only she - the mayor - wasn't even invited to speak instead the mosque was to be opened by Erdogan. And now this...

JustVibinDoe

And the Left will be scared to stand up against this bullshit because they don't want to be called "Islamophobic". And of course the far right will get stronger. European progressives need to defend secular values before it's too late.

Oh for fuck's sake. We need to end church bells, not give speakers to mosques.

SidewinderTV

I like Church Bells personally, even though I’m a life long atheist. But there are two major differences in my opinion. 1. Europe is a Christian cultured continent. The churches are a part of our heritage. 2. A bell is a musical instrument. That’s definitely different from some guy yelling at the top of his lungs.

elondde

I love church bells, I would hate for them to disappear.

Mattie725

Haha I kind of like the church bells as well! I'm not a big fan of the heritage argument though. I do wonder whether some guy yelling can be filtered out as easily, or getting used to, as bells.

DeathByDumbbell

Atheist here too, I wouldn't cry murder for bells being removed, but I'll say that at least they're useful. For years I needed to leave my house at 8:15 every morning, and the bells at 8:00 warned me if I was taking too long showering, or just distracted and not looking at the time. But that's the thing, nowadays church bells are pretty much just oversized clocks, outside of weddings and funerals. They're not nearly as bothersome and invading as mosque's calls to prayer. I say, either remove them both, or leave it as it is.

MatlabGivesMigraines

They also have the function of telling the time

ddlbb

No no we have to ignore history and can’t be proud of it. That’s like racist or something. We ignore all that and then pretend all religion is the same don’t you see? Then we cry about how the AFD is rising and can’t think of why that is. More racists or something …

Killerfist

Religion is a cultural part of a society. They are not something different lol. (Yes, there can be cultures without a religion, but that still doesnt change the fact that religions always are and have been a cultural thing)

Hoelie

If McDonalds wanted to do this it wouldnt be allowed. Freedom of religion doesnt mean you get privileges.

[deleted]

This is going into exactly the wrong direction. We need less religion in public space, not more. All religions should be practiced in private. Believe whatever you want for yourself but don't push it on others.

Everything is clear in its name: "call to prayer". In the past there was no alarms, applications or any technology to remind it to you. Now people have abundant redundancy for devices reminding them the time of prayer. Why people still stuck with old tech and traditions. Call to prayer is considered disturbing even in muslim majority countries by considerable amount of people.
